Executive Summary
The Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) Sophomore Success Program is designed to
aid students as they continue to transition into their second academic year. EOP offers
intrusive advising and career exploration related services. Sophomore year can be an
exciting time of reflection, learning about oneself, getting involved on campus, and
exploring major and career possibilities. The Sophomore Success Program offers a wide
range of services specifically catered to Sophomore/Second Year Sacramento State
Students.
During fall 2016, one hundred and seventy two students were identified as EOP sophomore
students. These students accessed Sophomore Success services by either individual
advising, group advising, learning community, or the bridge program.
EOP sophomore students attended advising at a rate of 99% for the fall and spring
semesters in the 2016-2017 academic year. Undeclared sophomore students met with an
EOP Graduate Advisor at an advising rate of 100%.
EOP sophomore students also increased knowledge on career exploration individually with
91% of students strongly agree/agree that they were able to explore their major outside
the classroom that summer.
In academics, EOP Sophomore Bridge students have 100% passing rates for English 20.
Students who participated in the EOP Sophomore Learning Community passed English 20
at a 96% passing rate.
Finally, EOP Sophomore Learning Community is a dynamic program. Ninety five percent of
students strongly agree/agree that they learned valuable and resourceful information.

Mission Statement
The Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) is designed to serve California residents from low-income households who demonstrate the motivation and potential to earn a baccalaureate degree. Through a collection of services and programs, EOP strives to ensure that every student realizes their goals of a college education through the creation of a family atmosphere and community of support. The overall mission of the program is shaped by the delivery of specialized program components, which include the EOP First Year Experience and a continuing student services component called the “ARISE Project.” By providing academic, personal and professional assistance, EOP scholars are able to advance their goals of a college education through service connections that promote involvement and success in the campus milieu.

Demographic Information
There were 172 students in the Fall semester who participated in the EOP Sophomore
Success Program. Of these students, 40 identified as Asian, 18 as Black or African American,
93 as Hispanic or Latino, one as Native Hawaiian, 8 as two or more races, 10 as White, one
as Decline to State, and one student had missing demographic data. There were 122 female
participants and 50 male participants.

Program Outcomes
This academic year, the Vice President of the Division of Student Affairs decided to align
department goals with the university’s goals, Student Affairs Divisional Goals, and
Baccalaureate Learning Outcomes. The structure of this section will include the goals, the
strategies to achieve those goals, and the outcomes.
Program Goal 1: Sophomore EOP students will attend advising.
University Strategic Goal: Enhance student learning and success
Student Affairs Divisional Goal: Increase graduation rates and decrease time to degree
Baccalaureate Learning Goal: N/A
Standard of achievement: 95% of students will attend advising.
EOP Sophomore Success provides academic advising to their student population during
both fall and spring semesters of the academic year. The following data shows the findings
on whether Sophomore Success met its standard of achievement of 95% of students
attending advising.
In fall 2016, 172 students participated in the Sophomore Success Program. Out of the 172,
170 students met with an EOP Counselor/ Graduate Student Advisor for a one on one
appointment. A total of 99% of EOP Sophomore Success students completed their advising
requirement.
In the spring semester of 2017, there were 160 students who participated in the
Sophomore Success Program. Out of the 160 students who participated, 138 students
attended a Sophomore Success Group Advising workshop, 20 students participated in a one
on one advising session with an EOP Counselor/Graduate Student Advisor and two
students did not complete their advising requirement. A total of 99% of Sophomore
Success students completed their advising requirement.

Our findings based on the data provided by the EOP Sophomore Success Program
determine that EOP Sophomore Success was able to meet their standard of performance
rate of 95% in advising participation.

Standard of achievement: 90% of students will increase knowledge on career
exploration or academic planning.
Students who participated in the Sophomore Success Group Advising in the spring
semester took a post-survey measuring increase in knowledge after the group advising
session. There was no pre-survey.
One of the questions on the survey asked if student was “now fully aware of Sac State G.E.
and Graduation Requirements that need to be fulfilled towards my degree completion”. The
breakdown goes as follows:

Ninety seven percent of students strongly agree/agree that they are now fully aware of Sac
State G.E. and Graduation Requirements that need to be fulfilled towards their degree
completion. Two percent of students strongly disagree/disagree that they were fully aware
of Sac State G.E. and Graduation Requirements. One percent of students were not
sure/neutral.

Students who participated in the Sophomore Bridge Program took a pre and post survey
assessment. One of the questions asked students to rate their eagerness of career and major
exploration on a 5-point Likert scale. The following are the findings of that survey:

In the pre-survey, a total of 91% of students strongly agree/agree to being eager to explore
their majors and careers in and outside of the classroom. In the post-survey, a total of 91%
of students strongly agree/agree that they, in fact, did explore their major and careers in
and outside the classroom. Ninety-one percent still surpasses the standard of achievement
threshold of 90%.

Students who participated in the Sophomore Bridge Program were allowed the
opportunity to take English 20 during the summer bridge period. One hundred percent of
Sophomore Bridge students passed English 20.
Program Goal 5: EOP Graduate Advisors will provide career related services to EOP
undeclared sophomore students.

Standard of achievement: At least 75% of students will be seen by EOP Graduate

In the fall 2016, there were 18 undeclared sophomore students who participated in the
EOP Sophomore Success program. All 18 students met with an EOP Graduate Advisor. It
met and surpassed the standard of achievement of 75%.

The EOP Sophomore Learning Community consisted of two courses: English 20 (A-F
grading scale) and ALS 199 (Credit or No Credit Scale). Passing is a C- or better.

Data shows that 96% of students passed the English 20 course within the Learning
Community and 92% of students passed the ALS 199 course.
