Our Academic ProgramsSt Leonard’s College offers both the VCE and International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) as pathways to tertiary education.

The VCE is a flexible course with English the only compulsory subject. This allows students to tailor the course to meet their interests and future goals by either specialising in one particular subject area or choosing subjects from a range of disciplines.

The IBDP seeks breadth and breadth, with students required to take subjects from areas such as Science, Mathematics and Humanities, as well as at least one foreign language. In addition, all students complete three core subjects, which allows them to undertake creative, active and service-oriented activities. In an increasingly connected world, school leavers no longer compete just with peers from other Victorian and Australian schools, but with students globally. In recognition of the IBDP’s academic rigour, many of the world’s leading universities offer advanced standing or credit to IBDP graduates.

A study by the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) in the UK examined the characteristics and trends of around 6,500 IBDP students, compared to A-level and other student groups with similar qualifications, at tertiary education institutions. The study showed that IBDP students are more likely to enrol in a top 20 institution, receive honours degrees or awards, continue on to further studies, and be employed in graduate level positions and higher paid occupations (HESA 2011).

St Leonard’s College introduced the IBDP in 1982. With over 35 years of experience and an excellent ongoing relationship with the International Baccalaureate Organisation, our IBDP students are provided with the best support and tuition available.

University DestinationsOf the 2017 graduates who applied through VTAC, 99.3% received a first round offer.

Monash University was the most popular destination for our VCE and IBDP graduates, with 36% offered a place in a course at Monash University. Many students also gained places at The Melbourne University (24%) and RMIT University (14%).

The most popular courses were Commerce (26%), Science (18%), Arts (12%) and Design (10%). Some of our students will study at interstate and overseas universities, with graduates receiving offers from universities in New South Wales, Western Australia, South Australia, Queensland and internationally.
