The legacy of opera is just as much about taking in the performance of the patrons as it is about watching the opera itself. Our design concept came from the desire to peel apart and modernize the traditional layers of the opera, beginning with the core of the auditorium. The balconies wrap the auditorium exterior, allowing the viewer to view out and be seen from the street. To see and be seen, patrons could spend intermission in the lobby atrium dissected with bridges to get to either side. Finally, the outermost layer, the restaurant, has a prime location for patrons to dine while viewing the river and the activities within the opera house.

The goal with this project was to create a master plan for two distinct parks that lie along a fault line within the urban fabric of Kansas City, separating the pedestrian from north to south in the downtown area. Washington Square Park and the Rail Park aim to unite a city divided by topography, rail lines, and built structure by capitalizing on strong visual connections along Walnut Street.

Washington Square Park an ideal location for a prominent urban park, situated between some of the most popular civic areas in the city: Union Station, Crown Center, and Liberty Memorial at Penn Valley Park. In the new master plan, the design is based on desired circulation routes, with the goal of making the park a major transportation hub for down-town. Hierarchy is created based on how people should move through the site, including the proposed streetcar, MAX bus line, Park & Ride, Bikeshare Programs, and the Amtrak connection to Union Station.

Our proposal for a new Rail Park is currently a string of vacant parking lots lining the rail road at the lowest point of downtown. The Rail Park aims to create an urban oasis within the city, incorporating sustainable water management techniques while preserving the industrial nature of the area. As the park is linear, a boardwalk would coincide with new development, to encourage active lifestyles and to take advantage of the unique perspec-tive of the city, as it is seen from below.

Our plan for the re-design of the green and civic spaces of Kansas City, Missouri developed into a three-part layered system.ANCHOR PARKSIconic parks that embody the identity of Kansas City. These parks have permanence and po-tential to connect the city to its place through its history, topography and natural features. They primarily serve the city but can also function as neighborhood parks or the region as a whole.CORRIDORSLinear green and public space for multi-modal transportation to connect the districts of Kansas City. They are developed based on both ideas of leisure and efficiency.INFILL PARKSCivic and green spaces that infill between Anchor Parks and Corridors that are intended for spontaneous pedestrian exploration. The distribution is based on a modified 5-minute walk-ing distance in the city. They work together to define each district and to create a network of sustainable infrastructure spaces.

In Fort Worth, Texas, the Trinity River is a significant aspect of the downtown area, though its per-sistent flooding have left a large gap in the fabric of downtown. The city is developing the area into an amenity, by re-routing some of the water and developing the area with a lively mix of housing and entertainment functions. Our work was to give the city a vision of buildings for the design.

My chosen site will be on what is likely the most prominent urban corner of the area, wedged be-tween two major streets and the canal to the south. This lead me to create a scheme that addressed this by utilizing two geometric shapes: for the commercial side, a polygon for the lower two floors, and, above, an L-shaped residential volume that wrapped around the commercial, while opening out to the south and west. The strong L gives street presence, while framing an inviting, yet secluded courtyard for the residents. It allows fresh air, sunlight, vegetation growth, and views to the canal and downtown.

This design-build project could be no larger than a shipping container, and the inspira-tion came from development in the Kansas City West Bottoms and the history of the area, home to the city stockyards. Our goal was to dissect the container into three parts, making an adaptable, social, and promotional facility, able to be adjusted to the local business owners designs.

The richness of the Kansas City West Bottoms allowed us to take design cues from local buildings and culture. For the inner frame, osage orange wood would be used and the cladding would consist of a per-forated zinc layer fastened to the wood. The zinc would be recycled material, and its natural patina would react to any outside influences, from weather to human touch. For the perforations, the pattern was an abstraction of the stockyards, formed by groupings of brick cutouts.

Work ExperienceKansas City Design CenterKansas City, Missouri - August 2011 to May 2012 In the creation of our three-part vision plan for the public spaces of downtown Kansas City, I created and developed the concept for the nontraditional, infrastructural park to alleviate water overflow issues. Parks & Recreation have chosen to take the Rail Park into further investigation this semester. Selected as the graphics editor to formalize our vision plan with Parks & Recreation in a project book. Organized and oversaw the presentation diagrams for two of the three teams and pushed the group to develop the concept further - leading the team to a better understanding of the project as a whole.

University of Kansas Bursars Office - Student AssistantLawrence, Kansas - June 2008 to January 2011 Both over the phone and at events such as Student Orientation, I was able to present the policies and practices of the university. Finding solutions to students questions, I was able to educate students and parents to reach an understanding of how billing worked and why. Maintained a 20 hour work schedule in addition to successful completion of Masters of Architecture credits, learning to manage time in order to complete my projects to the standard I desired.
