Letter From the EditorHello Gorgeous,

My hopes for all of you beautiful ladies is that you get everything you need from my magazine. XO is a magazine for you to keep for years to come and maybe even pass down to your daughters. I want it to instill confidence in this strong generation of women, something that I feel is lacking in our society.

With the wave of feminism that is taking our nation by storm, some can be thrown off or scared away. XO is a medium for you to get all of the facts straight, and feel and look good while doing it!

I am focusing more on the life of a college student because I believe that this is a highly im-portant time in your life. This is when you become who you will be for the rest of your life. This is when you decide what you want to do with your life. And, this is when you meet the strong people that will carry you through your toughest times. I want everyone to have an enjoyable experience in college, and hopefully you can get help through this magazine.

As a college student myself, I wanted XO to help and aspire women who are in the same posi-tion I am in. I want to provide healthy, easy meals to women living on a budget. I want us to look good while we are stressing out about classes. I want us to be informed on what is going on in the world. All of these things together in one magazine is what makes XO so unique.

Use XO as a stress reliever. Use it as a fun activity to do with your best friends. Talk about it. Share it around. Spread the happiness!

XO, Kayla Corbin

A home away from home: The transition from home to college life

Moving from your everyday home life to a new and scary place can be overwhelming at first. Shippensburg University communication/journal-ism students Jessica Malick, 20, and Jessica Richardson, 20, have had more than two years of dealing with this transition.

The college juniors reside in an off campus apartment together with one other roommate.

Moving onOnce you move out of your parent’s

home, you are thrown into a life of freedom and independence. Malick remembers the transition being hard, but better than she had expected.

“It was hard because it was my first time being away from home for a long amount of time, and I missed my fami-ly and dogs a lot,” she said.

Richardson added, “I grew up where family was the most important thing to you, so going from being with them almost everyday to living on my

own was difficult.”Making your apartment feel like

home is a very easy way to give your-self the right kind of vibes and moti-vation. Malick and Richardson both suggested hanging pictures up on the walls of your apartment. For Richard-

son, hanging photographs of her family and dog gave her motiva-tion throughout the school year. Bringing personal photographs to college can help transform a bare, cold feeling apartment into something personal.

Don’t let yourself be the person who stares at the blank white walls, searching for something more. Make sure you bring special, little items to your apartment or dorm that remind you how you have gotten this far.

Get involvedMeeting new people and get-

ting involved is a really import-ant aspect of college life both of the students shed light on. “Even though it’s really hard, you have to put yourself out there and push yourself out of your comfort zone,” Malick said.

Some students will have an easier transition than others.

“Find something you like to do, be-cause keeping yourself busy will help make the transition easier,” Richard-son said. It is better for you to go out and explore new, exciting opportu-nities than regret it later on after you graduate. College is a time for you not only to find yourself, but find people who could stand along with you for years to come.

Richardson suggested getting involved through clubs and organiza-tions that you are interested in. Both Malick and Richardson are involved with the school newspaper, The Slate, and the sorority Alpha Phi. Malick is also a member of PRSSA. Although it may seem like you have a lot on your plate, they both agree that it is better to keep yourself busy and active than just lie around wondering “what if.”

Malick is thankful she found her sorority, because it helped her meet a lot of people. Not only did she become close with sisters in her sorority, but she met a lot of people through Greek life in general.

Joining a sorority is a really good and easy way to meet new people who are interested in the same things you Richardson and her dog, JD.

are. Malick urges students to check out Greek life, even if you are unsure if it is for you. You never know what could be waiting for you.

It is easy to surround yourself with the wrong kind of people as you start your college career. “If you surround yourself with the wrong people, it can bring you down,” Richardson said. If you find organizations and clubs that you are interested in, you are more likely to find your crowd.

“Even though it’s re-ally hard, you have to put yourself out there and push yourself out of your comfort zone,”

-Jessica Malick

Richardson also mentions that surrounding yourself with the wrong people can damage how much you grow in your college experience. Malick mentions how less stressful her college experience has been because she has good friends around her that she is able to talk to about pretty much everything. It is important to remem-ber that you are not alone at your time at college. Malick has realized people understand what you are going through.

Decorating your new homeMalick and Richardson stressed

how important it is, for them espe-cially, to make sure you bring photo-graphs of people from home who are close to you. Richardson uses these photographs as good memories to look back on when she is feeling down, and also sees them as motivation to push herself through a bad week.

Hanging photographs is an easy way to brighten up a blank wall. With photographs, you have unlimited pos-sibilities. Malick has her photographs set up as a collage. Richardson, on the other hand, has photographs hanging in multiple shots. Photographs can really personalize a bedroom, and it is something to highly consider when thinking of how to decorate your room at college.

It also helps Malick feel like she

is home by decorating seasonally. For exam-ple, for the fall season, the apartment is full of gourds, pumpkins, candy corn lights, and other small decorations. She looks forward to chang-ing decorations as the seasons pass.

Decorating your apartment with your roommates can also help you bond. In their case, on the first night in their new apartment, they stayed up decorating can-vases and first initials to make it more personal.

Choosing an apartment Although most incom-

ing freshmen are re-quired to live on campus their first year, it is im-portant to explore other options. Malick and Richardson vocalize how living off campus in an apartment is not only so much different, but easier.

“You have a lot more freedom in an apartment,” Malick said. For her, having a full kitchen, living room, and, in her case, her own bedroom and bathroom makes living in an apartment feel more like home. With a full kitchen, it is a lot easier to cook meals and bake desserts. You can eat healthier, and have a lot more options than you would as opposed to living on campus.

Malick likes that she is not re-stricted to stuff on campus. Living off campus, you are more part of the town your college is in. You’re closer to the grocery store, restaurants, and any other little shop that might be walking distance.

Richardson likes how much more freedom there is when you are living off campus in an apartment. She said she feels like she gets the chance to make it more of her own home and personalize it, because a lot of the rules and regulations in the residence halls restrict a lot of decorations like Christmas lights, candles, or even command strips.

“It is more of your own place, and you don’t have to worry about (a res-ident’s assistant) or someone coming in to do inspections,” Richardson said. You do not feel as bombarded and heavily watched. She sees living in an apartment as more of a setting that you will be in once you are out of col-lege. By dealing with rent, a landlord, and all other things that go into an apartment, you are preparing yourself for yet another transition in life.

Having their own place lets both of them feel more like an adult. By having somewhere to cook, relax, and personalize the walls, it has become their home away from home.

It is normal to miss home. You have spent almost your entire life up until this transition in this familiar envi-ronment, and no matter where you go, home will always be with you, accord-ing to Richardson. It is a huge step in life and does not have to be handled alone. Malick and Richardson found each other in their college life and are thankful for each other. Once you find those special people you can share everything with, they will start to feel like family

Both stress the importance of getting involved.

FOOD

Quick and healthy meals on a college budget

Breakfast

Start by melting the three tbsp. of butter into a pan on me-dium heat. Crack three eggs into a bowl and whisk them. Pour the whisked eggs into the pan, tipping the pan to make sure the eggs cover the bottom of it. When the underside is slight-ly browned, add in the crumbled feta and spinach. Fold the omelet in half and cook until the inside is cooked. Slide the omelet onto a plate and enjoy!

Spinach and Feta Omelette($6)

If you’ve ever experienced a normal week at college, you will know that it includes stressing over school work and not much of anything else. Sometimes we forget the importance of taking a break, relaxing and eating a meal or two because we feel as if there is not enough time.

Mallory Aleman, a culinary student at the Pennsylvania School of Culinary Arts, stresses the significance of eating three meals a day. “Our bodies run on food and water. If we do not provide it with ample meals throughout the day, it will not matter how much studying for an exam we do – we’ll forget the answers due to the lack of energy we have.”

Being a student herself, Mallory has found ways to balance school and eat healthy on her limited college budget. She was happy to share a few of her go-to meals, which she swears by if someone wants to eat healthy yet still have plenty of time to do school work.

Dinner

Lunch

Fried Zucchini Spaghetti($12)

Broccoli and Feta Pasta Salad ($11)

Ingredients: 1 lb. small zucchini ¼ c. flour

½ c. and 2 tbsp. olive oil ¾ lb. spaghetti

1 c. shredded parmesan cheese ½ c. torn basil leaves

and lemon wedges (for serving)

dressing- ¼ tsp. salt ½ c. buttermilk

¼ c. mayonnaise1 clove garlic (minced)1 tbsp. dried oregano,1 tbsp. distilled vinegar

pasta- 8 oz. whole wheat pasta

2 c. chopped broccoli 1 ¾ c. halved cherry to-

matoes1 15 oz. can chickpeas

(rinsed) and ½ c. crumbled feta

This is a great recipe that incorporates ingredients from breakfast to save money. You’ll first want to make the dress-ing, which is simple. Start by mashing the garlic is a medium mixing bowl, making it into a chunky paste. Add in the but-termilk, mayonnaise, oregano and vinegar. Whisk the ingredi-ents until they are combined and refrigerate while you make the pasta. Depending on what type of whole wheat pasta you chose, the cooking directions may be different. Cook the pasta in a large boiling pot of water according to what is on the packaging. When cooked, drain and transport to a large mixing bowl and let it cool down. Add the broccoli, toma-toes, chickpeas and crumbled feta and toss. Add the dress-ing to your liking and serve!

In a medium mixing bowl, toss the zucchini and flour to-gether. In a large skillet, heat half of the olive old until it is simmering. Add half of the zucchini and fry until browned and crisp (about 3-4 minutes). Transfer the fried zucchini to a paper towel and repeat with the remaining olive oil and zuc-chini. In a large pot of boiling water, cook the spaghetti pasta until al dente. Drain the pasta, but reserve ½ c. of the water. Return the pasta to the pot and toss with the 1 c. cheese and basil leaves. Add the reserved water in a little at a time, tossing well to coat. Move the pasta to a bowl and top with the fried zucchini. Serve with lemon wedges and additional cheese, if desired.
