PREFACE

The Office of Institutional Research and Assessment is pleased to present the 2019-2020 edition of the Academic Data Reference Book (ADRB). The current edition joins 49 previous issues to form a continuum of information about academic aspects of American University. In 1971, the ADRB was described as an ‘experimental’ first edition, and the goal of current publication follows the tradition established 49 years ago. It evolves along in providing the community with reliable and useful information related to these 6 sections: student enrollment, admission, retention and graduation rates, degrees conferred, course enrollment, and faculty.

The web version of the ADRB, which includes consecutive historical editions, can be accessed from the OIRA website. Please check this site occasionally for any updates or revisions to this report.

DEFINITIONS

Abroad at AU

Accelerator

Census Date

Cohort/Entering Cohort

Program for students from other countries who want to study at AU for a limited period, usually a year or a semester. Abroad at AU students are nondegree.

AU partnered with Shorelight Education to welcome the International Accelerator Program starting in Fall 2016. This program consists of Undergraduate Accelerator (pre-bachelor’s) and Master’s Accelerator (pre-master’s) designed for international students, combining English-language support and some for-credit courses which are transferable to an AU degree-seeking program upon successful completion of program requirements. Some students enroll in a noncredit Pre-Sessional English program prior to commencing an AU Accelerator program.

The day on which AU takes a snapshot of student data to ensure consistent reporting for each semester. The fall and spring census dates are historically at the end of the fifth week of classes for those semesters; this changed in Fall 2019 to the end of the sixth week of classes. The summer census date is July 15. All admission and enrollment reporting in the ADRB is as of the census date.

A group of students who are new students at the same level in the same term. Cohorts are used for reporting graduation and retention rates. AU offers the following cohort-based living-learning communities for four-year AU bachelor’s degree students: AU Honors, Frederick Douglass Distinguished Scholars, Community-Based Research Scholars, and University College. Cohort-based three-year bachelor’s degree programs offered at AU include Global Scholars, Politics, Policy and Law Scholars, and Public Health Scholars. Three additional cohorts reported here are the self-identified first generation college students, invite-only Summer Transition Enrichment Program (STEP) participants, and Pell grant recipients.

Collegiate

Degrees Conferred

First Generation

Full-Time

Launched in Fall 2017, American Collegiate (formerly American Access) is another AU-Shorelight Education partnership program designed for international students. Its nondegree design combines English-language support and some for-credit courses which are transferable to a bachelor’s degree program at a partner or affiliated university (including AU, if desired) upon successful completion of program requirements.

The number of degrees (or certificates) granted to students upon completion of their program’s requirements, which may exceed the number of students who graduated because students may earn more than one degree (or certificate).

First generation status is based upon responses to admissions application questions regarding parents' education. First generation students are students who self-report that no parent has post-secondary education experience.

Student status that is derived by student term credit hours: undergraduate degree-seeking, nondegree, and certificate students and law students taking 12 or more credit hours; graduate degree-seeking, nondegree and certificate students taking 9 or more credit hours during fall and spring semesters, and 4 or more credit hours during summer sessions. (Full-time is 4 credit hours for graduate students as of summer 2013.)

An alternative method to headcount for counting student enrollment by which the number of full-time students plus the total student credit hours of part-time students is divided by the minimum number of credits to be considered a full-time student at the same academic level. Thus, students attending full-time or part-time are weighted. (Note: This calculation changed in 2009 so care should be taken when making historical comparisons.)

An AU employee hired full-time in a faculty position. Full-time faculty can fall into one of several categories including teaching, administrative, library, and research depending upon their primary responsibilities as defined in their contract.

Law

Full-time faculty where the majority percentage of their time is to be devoted to teaching, with smaller percentages for scholarly research and service.

Students in a cohort as of census of their entering term who have graduated as of a specified number of years.

A method of counting student enrollment by which each individual student is counted. Students attending full-time or part-time are counted in the same way. Unless otherwise specified, headcount is unduplicated (meaning each individual student is counted once in their first major).

International includes students with non-U.S. citizenship who are not permanent residents.

Includes all students in the Washington College of Law, including JD, LLM, SJD, nondegree, and certificate (unless otherwise specified).

This refers to an enrolled student’s degree level based on their academic program. Students may be classified at the broadest levels of undergraduate (UG) and graduate (GR) or they may be organized more specifically as Bachelor’s, Master’s, Doctoral, Law, Nondegree and Certificate UG, or Nondegree and Certificate GR. The most detailed classification further delineates the levels by online or MM and lists each of the law degrees by name (Juris Doctor, Master of Laws, Master of Legal Studies, and Doctor of Juridical Science).

One of three enrollment options for graduate students not enrolled in credit course work but utilizing university services which allows graduate students to maintain their enrollment. (The other options are Continuing Enrollment and Doctoral Dissertation enrollment.)

AU’s business intelligence system used to access official AU data.

Nondegree

Online Course

Part-Time

Students enrolled in regular university courses who have not been admitted to a degree program. Unless otherwise noted, excludes law.

A course in which instruction is delivered exclusively via web-based interface rather than face-to-face.

Student status that is derived by student term credit hours: undergraduate degree-seeking, nondegree and certificate students and law students taking fewer than 12 credit hours; graduate degree-seeking, nondegree, and certificate students taking fewer than 9 credit hours during fall and spring semesters, and less than 4 credit hours during summer sessions (as of summer 2013).

Students in a cohort as of census of their entering term who are still enrolled at census at a later term.

Percent of an entering cohort, defined at census, who are enrolled in a subsequent term at census.

This is a student’s affiliation based on their primary program of enrollment or a faculty member’s affiliation based on their contract. AU houses eight schools/colleges: College of Arts & Sciences (CAS), Kogod School of Business (KSB), School of International Service (SIS), School of Communication (SOC), School of Education (SOE), School of Public Affairs (SPA), School of Professional & Extended Studies (SPExS), and Washington College of Law (WCL). Students affiliated with a nondegree or non-credit program rather than an AU school/college are categorized under Accelerator & Collegiate Programs or Study Abroad (Non-AU). The School of Education separated from the College of Arts & Sciences as of July 2019, forming a standalone school.

Transfer Student

Program allowing non-AU students to study abroad through an AU-sponsored program.

Full-time faculty who are not tenured nor on tenure track.

A student admitted to AU who is transferring credits into their AU program. If the transfer credits are from another institution, the student is an external transfer; otherwise, the student is an internal transfer based on transfer credits from AU.

AU’s 4-term programs, also referred to as the "T-Terms," involve select Kogod School of Business, School of International Service, and Washington College of Law online graduate programs. T-Term time periods encompass January-March for T1, April-June for T2, July-September for T3, and October-December for T4. The first T-Term at AU was 2019T2. The ADRB reports on T1, T3, and T4 beginning with 2019T3.
