The parts of the crest either represent national symbols or elements of a unique Namibian landscape and culture. The colours have been selected to represent the national spectrum, as influenced by the heritage from the Namibian flag:

1. The Atom is one of the most basic recognisable symbols of science. Positioned under the sun it symbolises science and technology as the foundations of illumination at the University.

2. The Arch is the threshold of knowledge. It is the gateway to the future and encourages a thirst for knowledge and discovery. Namibia becomes the threshold for new development - entering a new era.

3. The Ribbon is derived from the diverse traditional cultures of Namibian dress, amongst the Damara, Herero, Himba and Owambo groups; it is a extension of the red band representing people. It is a symbol of achievement and prestige, and recognises traditional cultures of pageantry. The ribbon epitomises flexibility and adaptiveness by which NUST exemplifies and enables its students to achieve higher knowledge.

4. The Sun represents the outcome of scientific and technological innovation and enlightenment. Education is a form of discovery, energy and life that this symbol should highlight through its embodiment of the sun.

5. The Shield is the symbol of learning institutions (traditional) - signaling tradition, strength and readiness.

6. The Red Band represents the people and also blood, which gives life. People are the lifeblood of the University and country. It refers to their heroism and their determination to build a future of equal opportunity for all. The position of the red band represents ‘crossing over the threshold’.

About the Guest SpeakerMrs Monica GeingosFirst Lady of the Republic of Namibia

Biography

Before assuming the First Lady role in 2015, Mrs Monica Geingos was a co-shareholder and Managing Director of Namibia’s largest private equity fund for over a decade. During this time, she served on the Boards of large public and private sector companies as either Chairperson or Deputy Chair. Due to her extensive corporate experience, she was a long-standing member of high-level policy advisory Boards such as the President’s Economic Advisory Council, the governing Party’s Think Tank, and the National Council of the Namibia Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Through the One Economy Foundation, she has initiated numerous programmes that focus on sustainably lifting vulnerable populations out of poverty traps.

Mrs Geingos’ role as a UNAIDS Special Advocate for Young Women and Adolescent Girls is a perfect fit for the One Economy Foundation’s #BeFree Movement. This youth-driven programme facilitates a non-judgemental platform for youth to discuss their challenges while assisting them to access information and appropriate services. She is currently the Patron of the Shack Dwellers Federation of Namibia and the Chairperson of the Board of the Urban Poor Fund International. She further serves as a Director of the Oxford African Studies Centre International Advisory Board and is a member of the Concordia Leadership Council.

Mrs Geingos holds two legal degrees, B. Juris and an LLB from the University of Namibia.
