Ensuring arts programs are a vital part of our schools feels like a personal mission for the Acadiana Center for the Arts and the Lafayette Parish School System. Since its conception, the Primary Academic Creative Experiences (PACE) program has become an extraordinary vehicle for delivering this goal and gift to students of Lafayette Parish. Thirteen years ago, Burnell Lemoine (then Deputy Superintendent of Instructional Services in the Lafayette Parish School System) recognized the value of arts integration in teaching and learning and took decisive action. He approached LPSS staff member Sandy LaBry and Acadiana Center for the Arts (then Acadiana Arts Council) Education Director Renee Roberts with the idea of building an artists-in-residence program for students in schools receiving Title I funds. “The PACE program is something that I am very pleased to have initiated in collaboration with the Acadiana Arts Council as a way to bring Teaching Artists into our schools to work with young children on a continuous basis, rather than for a single experience,” said Lemoine. All visual and performing art forms introduced are foundational and sequential in presentation. The Teaching Artists deliver developmentally appropriate art instruction to their young students. Classroom teachers also play an active role in the arts-integrated lessons, particularly in the planning, evolving the program into a true collaboration between the Teaching Artist and the classroom teacher.

“It was a challenge to convince some administrators to include all students in the grade levels served, not just the talented or academically gifted ones,” Lemoine divulged. With Lemoine’s dedication of school system funding and collaborative planning between LPSS and the Acadiana Center for the Arts, PACE was born. Through PACE, students K-3 Title I schools have the opportunity to learn from the collaborative efforts of Teaching Artists, educators and administrators. In truth, it has become an invaluable asset for keeping art relevant to our children. By simultaneously learning about the arts and making connections to language, math, science and social studies through the arts, students are developing their minds more fully and experiencing the world more broadly through PACE. The PACE Program has also helped to spark many initiatives like the Pelicans on Parade Project. While a beautifully sculptured pelican became the mascot for the PACE Program, various local artists created a unique persona for each of the 80 birds, and with their purchase, the community returned funds to arts programming for Lafayette Parish public schools. To help teachers and teaching artists continue their learning, LPSS also facilitates connections with the Kennedy Center, the Lincoln Center Institute, the Smithsonian Associates and the Leonard Bernstein Center through Artful Learning. These relationships are strategic to keeping both teachers and students informed and engaged. The most recent AcA/LPSS collaboration is something that lets the community experience the incredible artwork that school children create — the annual Student Arts Expo. Through this event, parents enjoy student performances and visual arts exhibitions from various Lafayette Parish schools. The event has become an amazing instrument for developing arts education advocates by showcasing student artwork at one Downtown festival. With this program, arts education has become a natural part of our tradition of collaboration in setting the pace for a future of remarkable leaders. “I think we must never stop showing the community how our students are progressing in the arts and how with continued resources, we could expand our offerings and professional development,” Lemoine adds of the future. “One of my hopes for the children in Lafayette Parish is that they will grow up and be able to base their actions in support of the arts on their own art backgrounds. They will be the ones to demand that the arts remain strong in our schools.”

Song Circle: Community Singing for EveryoneA sing-a-long session for the fun of singing with other voices. We’ll draw songs from a variety musical styles: folk, old-time, traditional ballads, chants, classic country, gospel, blues and pop, some in multiple languages.

Song Circle: Same Songs, Different SoundsWe’ll learn and compare English and French versions of the same traditional ballads.

Song Circle: Favorite Jam SongsDon’t just sit and listen anymore - learn to sing standard, favorite jam songs with special guest Joel Breaux.

Lyrics for all sessions will be provided. Singing is call and response, in unison and with harmonies. These workshops are for all levels of singing experience, including those who were told never to sing! Song Circles are supported in part by a Decentralized Arts Funding grant.

Decentralized Arts FundingGrant Workshops

Decentralized Arts Funding (DAF) is an arts grants program, funded by the Louisiana Division of the Arts and administered by the Acadiana Center for the Arts for Region 4. DAF funds arts and cultural projects for non-profit arts organizations, non-profit organizations, social service organizations, schools, colleges and government agencies. The grant application deadline is Friday, June 15, 2012 for the grant period of October 1, 2012 to September 30, 2013. The connections between the traditional music of Francophone Canada and Louisiana are undeniable but largely unexplored. This show will take us on that journey, led by world-class performers on both sides of the line. De Temps Antan are at the pinnacle of Quebecois music, featuring virtuoso fiddler André Brunet, along with stellar guitarist and musical scholar Eric Beaudry and master accordionist Pierre-Luc DuPuis. They will collaborate with top Louisiana artists David Greely, Anna Laura Edmiston and Cedric Watson.

The Louisiana Crossroads film and TV pilot is a project that seeks to bring the area’s award-winning music series to TVs across the nation

This hour-long feature film highlights some of Louisiana’s greats including D.L. Menard, filmed on location at his home in Erath; Irma Thomas, filmed during her performance at the ACA in June; Sonny Landreth, filmed both at ACA and the Festival International de Louisiane; and Allen Toussaint, with Preservation Hall Jazz Band, filmed at Preservation Hall in New Orleans. The original concept has been expanded to include the stories behind the music through interviews with the artists and a further exploration of how Louisiana music creates a “crossroads” to other music cultures. The TV pilot was funded by the state Department of Culture, Recreation & Tourism, Lafayette Economic Development Authority and Acadiana Center for the Arts.

Acting Up’s rendition of the Shakespeare classic. Mid-month the great Texas Bard Steve Earle makes a two-

night stop with Louisiana Crossroads, and later in the month Blues star and Grammy winner Keb’ Mo’ joins

forces with Louisiana’s own blues rocker Anders Osborne. Closing out January is a spectacular set of school-

and evening performances by IMAGO, combining elements of theater and dance with amazing costumes and

lighting – spiced up with a wicked sense of humor.

Louisiana Crossroads pays homage to the legacy of Little Walter, inventor of the amplified blues harmonica

and born to a French-Creole family in Marksville, Louisiana. On stage Chicago blues-legend James Cotton will

help us remember one of our State’s music greats. Our Jazz Series continues with Jazz Club atmosphere and

Hot Club of Detroit playing Django-style tunes. Special events feature a Harpsichord performance of Bach’s

famed Goldberg Variations as well as a CD release recital of South American repertoire by AcA executive director

Dr. Gerd Wuestemann. Our All-Star series continues with an evening of homegrown All-Stars: Wayne Toups,

Steve Riley and Wilson Savoy perform traditional tunes and new composition, backed by some very special

guests. This show brings three generations of the finest in Cajun music together.

Call the AcA Box office at 233-7060, let our friendly Box Office attendants help you find your favorite seats and receive discounts, then purchase with a credit card over the phone.

Visit the AcA Box Office in person, find your favorite seats, receive discounts and pay with cash, check or credit card.

Either way - we’ll be happy to hold your tickets at Will Call or Mail them to you in advance.

AcA’s James D. Moncus Theater features an innovative, modular floor and seating system. In addition to our standard seating chart, select performances may feature:

Gulf Brew is AcA’s biggest fundraiser of the year and one of the biggest in Acadiana! The best of beer and food from the Gulf Coast region makes for a great way to pass a Saturday evening while helping preserve the arts in Acadiana. Huge white tents blanket Parc International with more than adequate air conditioning and over 120 craft and specialty beers inside.

But! This being a festival in Southwest Louisiana, beer isn’t all you get. Enjoy live music, an on-site beer brewing demonstration and play all of your favorite beer games!

AcA’s Creativity @ the Center summer art camps offer creative, challenging and meaningful hands-on experiences for children. The limited group sizes provide opportunities for up-close and personal attention for each child. We believe in an approach to teaching and learning that employs stimulating ideas like self-inquiry and self-expression. Although the activities are learning-based, they are also designed for lots of summer fun!
