Welcome to the Traverse Theatre's Spring Season 2014We begin a new year and a new season on a tide of goodwill following the success of last year’s 50th anniversary celebrations. It was wonderful to see how much the Traverse means to so many of you at home and abroad.
Having honoured the past we now renew our determination to usher in the next 50 years of ground-breaking creativity, opportunity and inspiration. The essence of the Traverse ethos remains a pioneering spirit and a lust for creative adventure; a place where new talent and work begins its journey.
With over 27 productions, and two international festivals (manipulate and Imaginate), to look forward to this Spring from the most exciting companies working nationwide, as well as a host of workshops, post-show discussions and festivals, there will be plenty of opportunities for you to get involved.
This March two of our award-winning Breakfast Plays, A Respectable Widow Takes to Vulgarity and Clean, return to our stage before they transfer to New York. Directed by Traverse Artistic Director, Orla O’Loughlin these 5-star productions wowed audiences and critics alike at last year’s festival with their sense of fun and lyrical dexterity.
We’re also delighted to welcome the return of the beloved A Play, A Pie and A Pint series in April. This season, the five-week series will take up residence in Traverse 2 for a mix of both afternoon and evening performances. Pies and pints are still on the menu alongside the best new drama and comedy.
Respected worldwide as a crucible for new writing and artistic talent, the Traverse continues its dedication to supporting and showcasing the most exciting new voices from Scotland and beyond. Keep an eye out for our Supporting New Talent button throughout the brochure to get a sense of the emerging artists being nurtured here year-round.
We have curated a pre-eminent programme of world-class drama, music and dance for you to enjoy throughout the building this season. Come, get involved and tell us what you think.

Yama/Kingdom (Double Bill)
SCOTTiSH dANCE THEATRE
28 February – 1 MarchScottish Dance Theatre presents two compelling works from international choreographers performed by the company’s exceptional dancers. Expect passion, energy and boundary-pushing dance.
Yama by Damien JaletDamien Jalet has been responsible for some of the most revered productions of the last 10 years, including Babel (Laurence Olivier Award 2011) and work with Akram Khan, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and a radical re-staging of Bolero with Marina Abramovic at the Paris Opera. In a UK first, Jalet works with revered Whitney- exhibited visual artist Jim Hodges to create Yama. This performance created with the dancers of Scottish dance theatre takes as its starting point the mythology associated with mountains and is a mysterious yet visceral metaphor of collective ascension. Costume Design: Jean Paul Lespagnard. Lighting Design: Emma Jones. Music: Winter Family.
Kingdom by Jorge CrecisSpanish choreographer Jorge Crecis presents his risk-taking, playful Kingdom. This piece isn’t about a journey, it is a journey. Starting with 52 bamboo sticks, 120 ropes, the company of 10 dancers are challenged to become a group and to effectively transform the raw materials into a 6 metre human shelter. Inspired by Crecis's participation in the Madrid Occupy movement, Kingdom is brutal, delicate and political. Costume design: Carys Hobbs. Lighting Design: Emma Jones. Music: The Artist.

Shushi was a programme so anarchic in its time that adults and children alike watched it in their millions. Until one fatal transmission where the female presenter was pushed over the edge, an obsessive fan resorted to desperate measures, and Phil Collins was locked in his dressing room.
Inspired by legendary Saturday morning shows such as Tiswas and Going Live, Never Try This At Home re-unites the remaining survivors of an infamous TV show, Shushi, and throws the spotlight on those presenters who are soon to realise the insidious side of fame. “It would be a great reform in politics if wisdom could be made to spread as easily and rapidly as folly”
A month after stating “we will stop the top-down reorganisation of the NHS that has got in the way of patient care”, the government launched the biggest top-down reorganisation the service had seen in its 65-year history.
With characteristic wit, tenderness and surrealism, Stella Feehily’s new play explores one family’s journey through the digestive system of the NHS and asks: what is the prognosis for this much-loved, fiercely-debated institution?

Set against the backdrop of the tainted blood products scandal affecting thousands of haemophiliacs worldwide, Factor 9 is a visceral horror story of human survival and a cry for justice in the face of a medical industrial nightmare.
From the brutal Arkansas penal system to the isolated voices of survivors in Scotland, this searing piece uses a bold theatricality, reaching into the roots of the tragedy and the outbreak of the AIDS epidemic in America.
Using testimony, transcripts, articles, reports and documentary evidence, two actors present a multi-media performance dominated by that vital fluid, blood, exploring everyday human experience and how lives were changed forever.

“You are the centre of your little world and I am of mine. Now and again we meet for tea, we're two of a kind. This is our universe, cups of tea. We have a beautiful cosmos, you and me.” Ivor Cutler
The Beautiful Cosmos of Ivor Cutler is a musical and visual journey based on the songs, stories and poems of one of Scotland’s most iconic exiles.
A Jewish, Scottish, Londoner, Ivor Cutler was a wholehearted eccentric whose music and words range from the whimsical to the disturbing; had he been born in Russia he'd perhaps be a Daniil Kharms or a Gogol. Here, Mr Cutler stands alone.
The Beautiful Cosmos of Ivor Cutler weaves together the music, prose, poetry and biography of Ivor Cutler to tell the story of a remarkable life, from birth, through boyhood, to old age, and death.

THE ARCHES PRESENTS PlATFORM 18 AWARd WiNNER
1 – 3 MayPlatform 18 Award 2014 Winner Rob Jones and Michael John O’Neill, Enormous Yes
... the king caused tak ane dumb woman, and pat hir in Inchkeith and gave hir two bairnes with hir...
In 1493 a young King James IV of Scotland ordered that two infants be left on the island of Inchkeith in the Firth of Forth to be reared by a mute woman. He hoped to uncover humanity’s original language; the words Adam shared with his God.
What James did became known as The Forbidden Experiment. In 2009 Rob Jones and Michael John O’Neill issued a Freedom of Information request for data on the British Army’s activities on Inchkeith during the Second World War. The pair wanted to know about the MoD’s interest in language deprivation, and about the forbidden thoughts that became forbidden acts once again on that lonely island in the Firth of Forth. It’s taken some time, but Rob and Michael have found something. Something they think you should know.
Each year, The Arches Platform 18 Award aims to supportScotland’s most exciting theatre makers and offer them theunique opportunity to stage a funded production at The Arches(Glasgow) as part of their Behaviour festival, followed by arun at the Traverse Theatre.

In 2011, UK graffiti artist Banksy spray painted ‘This Looks A Bit Like An Elephant’ on the side of an old water tank in Los Angeles. The disused tank was home to a man called Tachowa Covington who, in his seven years there, had furnished it with carpets, a stove and even CCTV. The tank instantly became a work of art and was taken away to be sold. Suddenly, Tachowa was homeless again...
Starring Gary Beadle - best known as Eastenders’ Paul Trueman,Tom Wainwright’s sell-out play is about creating somethingfrom nothing and then having it taken away, in the name of art. It will be followed by a screening of Something From Nothing, documentary-maker Hal Samples’ short film about Tachowa, edited from material gathered over seven years.

Casino and Queenie used to be hedge fund managers. Before the financial crisis of 2008, that is. Now, in an inspired - or desperate - career move, they’ve turned to performance art to share their stories of how to make (and lose) billions from the economic downturn.
Playing with £10,000 in real pound coins, Casino and Queenie challenge you to play a series of high stake games that demonstrate how the world’s economic system came to the brink of collapse.
MONEY the Game Show takes a playful and politically sharp look at the roots of the 2008 financial crisis and its on-going impact in 2014.
