President’s Pen

It is indeed a privilege to write a message as the President of Toastmasters Abu Dhabi Chapter Club which has a long, proud history in the toastmaster’s fraternity in United Arab Emirates. It holds a high place not only being the oldest club in the region but being in forefront providing profound encouragement in the areas of public speaking and leadership development. Through positive encouragement, the vitally important listening, thinking, and understanding skills are fostered which will contribute to all members becoming better speakers. I am committed to this path of positive encouragement and I believe with the help of our highly motivated members, we will continue to scale greater heights. I would like to extend my sincere appreciation, to our former President MTM Sujatha and her team of executive officers. Also, it will be unfair if I forget to appreciate our senior toastmasters who are keeping the spirit high for more than a decade and they are the strength of our club. Without their continued enthusiasm and dedication, Abu Dhabi Chapter would not be in the strong position it is today. Thanks to their efforts, Abu Dhabi Chapter has achieved the President's Distinguished Club for a decade in a row. This year, we will continue along the same path by growing our membership, actively promoting the toastmaster's program of public speaking and leadership skills and en-deavor to make every meeting a fun filled, entertaining and educational experience. Our challenge is not achieving President’s Distinguished Club but empowering more and more people with communication & leadership skills. That is our vision. Join with me as we embark on another incredible year’s journey at Abu Dhabi Chapter!

Let us “Aspire, Achieve, Ascend!” and work together to improve ourselves and each other.

Editor’s Column

Glorious Past, Great Leaders and Great Toastmasters

That’s how I would summarize our club. The laurels our club has received over the years

make me feel proud but also elevate my responsibility. As I enter my fifth year in Toast-

mastering, my role as VP-PR for the year 2011-12 has thrown many challenges in front of

me. Our club’s success lies in my hands. My success lies in your hands.

Small drops make an ocean. Every member’s contribution is vital. We are treated to some

of the best speeches in each of our meetings. It is my wish as your Vice President-Public

Relations to treat you to an interesting newsletter in each and every issue.

So, fellow toastmasters, make a pledge that each one of you will contribute to “Speaking

Up” in whatever way you can, be it an article, thoughts or any suggestions or feedback.

I am ready to embrace your contributions and share it in my edition.

This edition was possible with the contributions from several Toastmasters either by way

of articles or through their suggestions. This involvement from our Senior Toastmasters

makes me feel proud to be a member of Abu Dhabi chapter.

I am sure all of you will enjoy reading the first issue of “Speaking up” as much as I enjoyed

creating it.

Speak up for Speaking up!!!

Enjoy reading

24th YOUTH LEADERSHIP PROGRAM

Abu Dhabi Chapter conducted its 24th Youth Leadership for the children of the members of IDEA

(Innovative Centre for Education and Aptitude-a voluntary organization for enhancing children‟s

aptitude based values and skills, and providing them career focused development programs). The

YLP programme was conducted by our Immediate Past President MTM Sujatha Parthasarathy from

July 13th to July 29th.

The final session was a contest session attended by the Managing Committee members of IDEA and

several of our Toastmasters. It showcased the participant‟s public speaking skills learnt through the

YLP sessions. Parents and the participants were in great praise for the YLP programme conducted

by our chapter, particularly to MTM Sujatha who conducted the sessions in a most interesting

manner.

Kudos to MTM Sujatha. Another feather in her cap!

ISSUE 1 SPEAKING UP JUL ~ SEP 2011

The most important asset we all possess is none

other than our own mind.

But how many of us have invested enough time,

effort and money into developing this powerful

asset?

Like most things in life, it is something possessed

by everyone, but utilized by few. We all look to

the outside to find the secrets to success, wealth

and happiness, and neglect the power within

ourselves.

The human mind can be described as the

faculty of thinking, reasoning, and applying

knowledge. James Allen in his book “As A Man

Thinketh” compares the human mind to a

garden. He says, “A man‟s mind may be likened

to a garden, which may be intelligently culti-

vated or allowed to run wild . If no useful seeds

are put into it, then an abundance of useless

weed-seeds will fall and will produce weeds.

Mahatma Gandhi is a man who is greatly

admired and who left an indelible footprint on this

earth. He realized the power that he possessed in

his mind. “You can chain me, you can torture

me, you can even destroy this body, but you will

never imprison my mind.” were his words of

wisdom.

If you plant positive thoughts, you will reap

positive results. Plant negative thoughts and you

will reap negative results. Like the gardener who

takes tender care of his garden, slowly weeding

out the unwanted plants and caring for the

desired plants, you must get rid of the negative

thoughts and replace them with positive ones.

The first step, is to be able to recognize negative

thoughts. Any thinking that is connected with

lack of effort, failure, sickness, etc., is negative.

So don‟t think along those lines. When you see

someone driving an expensive car, do you think

to yourself that you would never be able to own

such a car? Don‟t! Instead, replace it with the

thought that it is totally possible for you to own

that car.

Go to the showroom and touch it. Feel it. If you

can, get inside it. Do everything you can to bring

it within reach of your mind. You will be amazed

at the power such simple exercises can have.

Try to associate with other great minds.

Remember the saying “Show me your friends

and I will show you your future”. The company

you keep says a lot about who you are and how

you think.

If you do not have company worth keeping do

not worry. In the current age of internet, books,

music and movies, you can have access to the

greatest minds that ever lived.

Reading in particular has great potential to

provide positive thoughts to your mind. Read

inspiring, uplifting and motivational books that

will slowly but surely help you to create a

beautiful garden in your mind.

2011 International Speech Contest Winners

It's the World Series of public speaking, the Olympics of Oratory, the final bout for the heavyweight

title of "World Champion of Public Speaking." It's the Toastmasters International Speech Contest!

Each year, this speech contest culminates at Toastmasters International's four-day International

Convention, held in August. A panel of experienced Toastmasters judges evaluate nine contestants

from different parts of the world, all of whom have advanced to the finals following a year-long

process of elimination, using club, area, district and semifinal competitions. Criteria used in judging

include speech content, organization, voice quality and gestures.

The title of 2011 World Champion of Public Speaking was awarded to Jock Elliott from Bongaree,

Queensland, Australia. Second and third place winners were, respectively, Kwong Yue Yang of

Guangzhou, Guangdong, China and Scott Pritchard of Henderson, Nevada, United States.

The Champion Speaker - Jock Elliott

In a speech underscoring the value of close connections with

family and friends, Jock Elliott, a Toastmaster from Bongaree,

Queensland, Australia, won the final round of the Toastmasters World

Championship of Public Speaking on 20th August 2011.

Elliott, along with eight other final contestants, reached the

championship round after several eliminating rounds that began six

months ago with 30,000 participants from 116 countries."We often

don't look after the people who really matter in our lives the way we

need to," Elliott said. His speech resonated with a capacity crowd of

nearly 2,000 listeners from around the world who attended the

contest held at the Bally's Las Vegas Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas,

Nevada.

The core message of his winning speech was about maintaining relationships with, "the friends of my

blood which is about family, friends of my time which is about the people I've grown up with and

shared experiences with, and friends of my heart, who have shared my life emotionally."

A veteran competitor, Elliott joined Toastmasters 36 years ago and competed in nearly 380

Toastmasters speech contests before reaching his lifelong goal of earning the title of World

Champion of Public Speaking. In his acceptance speech, he said, “Thank you for more than a

lifetime of challenge, opportunity and friendship. " A six-time World Champion finalist, Elliott said if he

had won this award five or 20 years ago, "I might have been a richer speaker but not a better

speaker."

A speech coach by trade, Elliott offers the following advice: "A good speech is like a good book or

a good song. It's memorable and creates an emotional connection."

“Try not to become a man of success but a man of value.”

ALBERT EINSTEIN

“Continuous effort – not strength or intelligence – is the key to unlocking our potential.”

Winston Churchill

The role of Toastmaster of the Evening (TME) is

one of the more challenging roles, because

there is lots to plan and lots to do at the actual

meeting. The success of any meeting depends

on the time, efforts and creativity of the TME.

Here are a few tips to enable you to

successfully conduct your role.

Prior to the Meeting

Our meetings are conducted every fortnight.

Two weeks before the meeting contact our VP

Education for the draft agenda. Send an email

to all the role players informing them of their

upcoming roles and get their commitment.

Call the prepared speech speakers and

secure their confirmation. The commitment of

prepared speech speakers is very important.

Call the role players who did not respond to

your email and get their commitment. If role

players are not available contact the

VP Education for alternate role players. All this

should be completed at least 10 days before

the meeting.

Check with the VP Education if there is a

theme for the evening. If not, choose a theme

and convey it to all the role players. Ask the

role players for the word of the evening,

thought of the evening, Table Topics Master to

prepare in accordance with the theme. To

introduce each speaker/role player, send an

email to them asking them to answer a few of

your questions related to the theme. Contact

them if you do not get a response.

Also, review "How to Introduce a Speaker" in

your Competent Communication Manual.

7-10 days before the meeting contact the

speakers and get their speech titles, manual

name, project number, speech time. Ask them to

coordinate with the Sergeant-at-arms, if they

require an LCD projector or any special item

available at the meeting hall.

Prepare your script from day one. As and when

you get information from role players update

your script. This will be a dynamic document until

the meeting day.

ISSUE 1 SPEAKING UP JUL ~ SEP 2011

“ If you cannot do great things, do small things in a great way.”

Napoleon Hill

Plan a few remarks which can be used to

bridge the gaps between program segments.

You may never use them, but you should be

prepared to avoid possibly awkward periods of

silence.

Prepare the meeting agenda from day one.

Keep updating it as and when the role players

change.

On the meeting day

Print out copies of the agenda late in the

afternoon, as you can expect many last minute

substitution and changes. Arrive at meeting hall

at least 45 minutes early (1 hour early if you

have to arrange the hall to suit your theme).

Distribute the agendas and check if all role

players have arrived. If not, request the

available Toastmasters to take up the roles.

During the Meeting

After the President introduces you, take control

of the lectern. Make a brief opening address

and introduce the theme. If there are guests,

briefly explain the purpose of each session.

Always lead the applause after introducing the

Speakers, the Table Topic Master and the

General Evaluator.

Remain standing near the lectern after their

introduction and greet them with a

handshake. Once the speaker has acknowl-

edged you and assumed control of the

meeting, be seated.

For each speaker:

- Give your prepared introduction

- Greet the speaker

- Thank the speaker on completion of the

speech

You may give short comments after each

speaker speaks. A good TME is able to

ad-lib, make use of what the speaker just

said and weave it into your comments.

Time management is very important. Keep

track of time to ensure that each session is

progressing as per the timing on the agenda.

If not, cut on your material and also signal

the table topic master when to wrap up.

Finally, return control of the meeting to the

President for his/her closing address.

Remember, performing as the TME is an

excellent way to practice many valuable

skills you have learnt in Toastmasters.

“It is hard to fail, but it is worse never to have tried to succeed.”

Theodore Roosevelt

We intend to bring the insights of some our Toastmasters. In this issue the toastmaster featured is our

immediate past President MTM Sujatha Parthasarathy

Who am I?

I am a go-getter. And since my parents thought it would be weird to call me "go-getter", they named

me Sujatha.

Describe yourself in a single sentence.

A very positive person who is always smiling and I LOVE LIFE!

Which speaker in history do you admire the most?

Dr Martin Luther King. Simply for the force of his voice and the passion in his messages.

What does being a Toastmaster mean to you?

Its a responsibility - to self and to the community. You have to reach and maintain a certain standard

that does you and your club proud.

What are your likes and dislikes at Abu Dhabi Chapter Toastmasters?

I love the members. I believe they are the strength of the club. I love the "non-political" ambience

that the chapter has always been able to uphold for all the 16 years of its existence.

Whats there to dislike about the chapter? In fact, there is nothing there to dislike in life. As I always

say, "life's always cool, it‟s the way you look at it."

What prompted you to join Toastmasters?

A colleague of mine at work who was at that time (1998) the VPE, took me to a club meeting and I

have been hooked on ever since! Public speaking has been a passion of mine all my school life, and

I jumped at an opportunity where people would have no choice but "listen" to me and give me only

"positive feedback!”

What was your most embarrassing moment as a speaker?

I Can’t remember one!

What according to you, makes a person a good public speaker?

Confidence ,in fact this is the character that makes a person good in anything he or she attempts.

Who am I ??

“All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them.”

Walt Disney

If you were stuck on a deserted island which book, movie or person would you like to take?

I would take my dreams along with me. Prof APJ Abdul Kalam said, "Dreams are not what you see in

your sleep, dreams are what keep you awake" My dreams would give me the motivation to live life

to the fullest, even on a deserted island, and not waste it with a book, movie or person.

Why do you think words are so powerful?

Words stay on in the minds and the hearts of the listener You can make or break a relationship, with

the words that come out of your mouth. You have always got to consider the moment and the

receiver before you utter something, and since your mind runs faster than your heart, you may end up

saying something, you don’t mean and later regret it!

Words of advice for a novice speake.

Understand your weaknesses. You may never be able to get rid of it, but you can learn to hide it if

you acknowledge it.

What person or event inspired you or changed you in a positive way?

My parents-in-law. In all the years that I have known my father-in-law, and in the last few that he has

been bed-ridden, I have always heard him respond to the question "How are you?”, with a very

cheerful "I am alright". He has taught me to value the gift of life.

My mother-in-law at 76 is a busy-bee. She has gone nearly blind due to her diabetes, but has still

found innovative ways to crochet a sweater for even the neighbour's grandchild! That's inspiration

enough for us youngsters to go through life with zest and make the best fit for ourselves and for others.

Abu Dhabi Chapter will miss one of its dedicated and enterprising member who bade

adieu during the 420th meeting held on 28th August 2011.

He is ACG,ALS Santhosh Shenoy who will be relocating to Kuwait. His Toastmasters journey

started in the year 2007 and within the span of 4 years he has made an indelible mark in

our chapter. He has served our club as a Secretary in the year 2009-10. He was also the

Gavel Club coordinator for more than 3 years and conducted successful Youth Leadership

programs. He has delivered several outstanding speeches and has also conducted several

educational sessions for our club. As a very committed toastmaster, he has never hesitated

to take up any role in our Club meetings. He was also awarded the “Toastmaster of the

year” in 2007.

When we asked him about his memories with Abu Dhabi Chapter, he said: “it was a

Ramadan evening in September 2007, when I stepped into Abu Dhabi Chapter Toastmas-

ters meeting venue. I was surprised with the enthusiasm and dedication exhibited by the

Toastmasters in our club. The club provided me ample opportunities to learn and enhance

my communication, leadership and interpersonal skills. This helped me to improve my

personal, professional and social life. I was sincerely guided and supported by all my

fellow Toastmasters throughout my journey in Abu Dhabi Toastmasters.”

Toastmaster Santhosh delivered his Advanced Communicator Gold project speech during

his farewell meeting on 28th August 2011. TM Santhosh with his sincerity and dedication has

left lasting memories in the hearts of all members of Abu Dhabi Chapter.

Dear TM Santhosh, Abu Dhabi Chapter will definitely miss you and we are sure you will

continue your journey of Toastmasters in Kuwait as well.

We use the causative when we do not carry out an action ourselves, but are responsible for

the action being performed.

Example: She had her car serviced last week - (She didn't service the car

herself, but the car was serviced because of her)

Usually, we use 4 causatives - Let, Make, Have and Get.

But, are you puzzled to decide which one to use when?

Well, here is one simple rule to make things easy.

Let means "to allow someone to do something."

Example: Will your parents let you go to the party?

John let me drive his new car.

I don't know if my boss will let me take the day off.

Make means "to force someone to do something."

Example: My teacher made me apologize for what I had said.

Did somebody make you wear that ugly hat?

Have means "to give someone the responsibility to do something."

Example: Please have your secretary fax me the information.

I had the mechanic check the brakes.

Get means "to convince to do something" or "to trick someone into doing something."

Example: The government TV commercials are trying to get people to stop smoking.

Ignite y How can parents get their children to read more? ,

“The difference between try and triumph is a little umph.”

RiSE like a RoSE

MTM Esperance Mendonca

16

Life is not a bed of roses.

Well some think it is………..Are you SHOCKED???

Why should you be shocked ??

Are you so worried about life that you only see the problems in it?

Rater than looking at the thorns on the rose plant, why don‟t we enjoy the beauty of

the ROSE ?

Let me share a story with you:

Once there was a man who bought a rose plant and planted it. He was so happy with

it. He cared for it so much that he watered it and saw it everyday…………....but Alas!

When he saw the thorns growing and the bud not blooming, he gave up saying, “what

a waste for a beautiful plant when only thorns can grow on it?” He left it unattended

and never watered it again. He ignored it………….. The BEAUTIFUL ROSE died.

We too at times worry too much and when we do so, others fail to see the Rose within

us. Sometimes we don‟t realize that there is a rose in everyone. Just as how a rose has

thorns, it also has a fragrance.

So be like a rose that spreads fragrance even in the hand that crushes it. Leave a mark

in your life, so that, when people see you, they see beauty and are left dumbstruck by

the fragrance you spread in everyone‟s lives!!!

where I had to present project work.

I am sure I could have done the

presentation much better if I was

more confident and had the courage

to face a crowd. I believe I can

achieve that confidence and

develop other interaction skills by

being a member of Toastmasters and

regularly attending club meetings.

MTM JIA JACOB

I am very glad that I joined Toastmasters and

can see my transformation from a person who is

not confident about himself into a person who

can communicate and become a leader. I

joined Toastmasters so that I can communicate

well and become a leader as well. My father

who was an avid Toastmaster himself has

motivated me to join Toastmasters.

“Lost time is never found again.” Benjamin Franklin

How is your time like

MTM LEENA JAYAKUMAR

22

What do you think would be that one problem we all face and that we have in common in our lives?

What do we generally complain a lot saying that we do not have enough of „it‟ with us? Is it money?

No! Is it opportunities? No! It is TIME!!

Don‟t you agree? We in our personal lives or professional lives always grumble and complain that

we do not have enough time. Can I now guess what you are thinking? Probably, “No Leena please!

don‟t preach on Time Management. We have heard enough of it!!” Right? Why do we all dread the

topic? We feel that we have read and heard so much about Time Management and have even tried

some of the methods but nothing seems to work.

The term „Time Management‟ is so commonly used these days that it creates a sort of a mental

block when you hear the word. When I see books about it on book shelves I run away from it. Of

course! I need to learn a trick or two to manage my time efficiently in my job and in my personal

life. I also definitely need to balance my time for my own personal interests; my hobbies, my friends

and my family and go for a full time job. How?

When I was seriously contemplating it I stumbled upon this new book called, „Time organizer tricks

on how to organize your time effectively‟ by Tim Hindler. I had no choice but to read the book as

I was stuck in my brother‟s office reception in Dubai for an hour with nothing but this book in front of

me!!!!

I am going to share one of the main tip from this book after having applied it in my life for a month

and I find it very effective.

The main point I noted from Hindler‟s book is when he says, „Use your time wisely‟.

“We say we waste time, but that is impossible. We waste ourselves.”

Alice Bloch 23

Before I go any further I would like to share the conversation I had with my grandmother many

years ago. She was the Women‟s Welfare Officer of her district in Kerala, India and was politically a

very active woman in her times. She said that despite the absence of electricity in her village she

was able to manage her six children, her portion of work in the huge joint family and still go out for

doing social service. She had asked me, “Now with all the modern amenities in the kitchen and at

the office, you women must have plenty of spare time at your hands. What do you with it?”

I remember laughing at that.“That is the exact problem”, I had replied. “We spend most of our time

using these tools, to an extent that they have become an obsession but still no time. She too had

advised, “Use your time wisely. Keep a time log”. I finally decided to take up her advise when I

read it again in Hindler‟s book. This is exactly what I did for a week; I split my time in office into

chunks of 30 minutes each and at home into chunks of 1 hour each. I wrote down what I did. After

one week when I observed, I found that in office, I had spent more time answering emails and

dealing with unimportant issues than intended.

This time log really helped me decide on how much time I spend on useful and unnecessary tasks.

In order to be very

effective in our job

Mr. Hindler in his book

insists that we divide our

time in office into three

groups. He says we must

spend 60% of our time in

Group 3 tasks which

i s p l a n n i n g a n d

d e v e l o p m e n t l i k e

making new contacts or

starting a new job. 25%

of our time for ongoing projects and only 15% of our time in regular routine jobs, like checking

mails, writing a regular report etc.

Unfortunately if we observe, many of us do just the opposite; allocating 60% of our time in routine

jobs, 25% on ongoing projects and just 15% for any new planning or development.

We can achieve this ideal 60:25:15 time distribution ratio by first maintaining a time log and next by

reorganizing our daily schedules which would help us distribute our time more efficiently.

Before it becomes habitual, don‟t you think it‟s time to rethink and improve our ways of using time?.

As William Penn the famous historian once said, “Time is what we want the most but what we use

the worst”.

Special Meetings at a

glance

SPEAKATHON

REVERSE MEETING

The meetings starts with the closing remarks.

Evaluators evaluate the speakers before they

speak, and end with the call to order by

Sgt at arms. Once in a blue moon, this fun

variation of the usual meeting format is refreshing

and fun

It‟s coming soon at your Club

DON‟T MISS IT!!!

When a club has more members who want to

present manual speeches than time available

during regular club meetings, the club may

occasionally conduct a special meeting

devoted solely to manual speeches. Sometimes

these meetings are called "speakathons",

"speechathons" , "speech marathons" , or

"speakouts".

The entire meeting is devoted to “Project

Speeches” and their evaluations.

No Table Topics session !!!!!

Joint

meeting

Impromptu

meeting

Club contests

Joint meetings are conducted between two

clubs. This helps the members to get to know the

other club members and benefit from their

experience. The role players and speakers are

represented from both clubs and there will be

two TME‟s !!!

Club contests are an annual event whereby the

Toastmasters are given the opportunity to partici-

pate in Humorous, Evaluation, Table Topics and

international Speech contests. For the Winners of

International Speech this will be the first step in

the ladder for “Champion of Public speaking”

In Impromptu meeting all role players are

assigned roles impromptu. So every

Toastmaster gets an opportunity to perform

different kind of role and gives them

confidence to be prepared to perform any

role assigned to them.
