2. What is Abstract Art? ! From About.com: Abstract art can be a painting or a sculpture that does not depict a person, place, or thing in the natural world. ! From ArtHistory.net: Works in this genre are often non- representational (which means that the artists forms may vary from a small degree of inaccurate representation of images to total abstraction with no recognizable imagery). 3. Discussion Questions ! What comes to mind when you think of Abstract Art? ! What is meant by the term non-representational? 4. Abstract Art is based on what YOU see! ! Because Abstract Art is non-representational, you become a part of the analysis. ! The art is based on what you see when looking at the colours, shapes, lines, brushstokes, materials used, size, scale and even the process used to create the art. 5. Do a quick Google search to instantly see hundreds of examples of Abstract Sculpture 6. Now lets react ! I am going to show you 10 different pieces of Abstract sculpture. ! Without discussing the pieces out loud, I would like you to write down your initial reaction. ! What comes to mind as soon as you see the image. ! You will be creating an abstract sculpture in a style similar the one pictured here. (More examples to follow) ! Materials needed: ! Block of wood ! Wire Hanger ! Panty Hose ! White Glue ! Alice in Wonderland Tree 13. Directions ! Step 1: Drill 2 small holes in the bottom of the wood. ! Step 2: Unbend hanger ! Step 3: Bend hanger into the shape youd like, and put each end into the holes in the wood. Keep in mind that only the most outer edge of the wire form will show, so dont put too much detail into inner loops or twists. 14. Directions ! Step 4: Use a knee high or cut the legs off of a pair of panty hose. Roll up the fabric so you can stretch it over the wire. ! Step 5: Pull the fabric over the entire sculpture including the wooden base. ! Step 6: Cut off excess fabric under the base 15. Directions ! Step Seven: Cover entire sculpture (except the very bottom) with a few coats of white glue. ! Step Eight: Once the glue has dried, paint the entire sculpture with a base coat of acrylic paint. ! Step Nine: Once the base coat has dried, add your own designs using acrylic paint and/or sharpie markers. !
