Thou, who in days past didst put it into the hearts of good

men to found this College, for the imparting of sound learning, the

building of character and the spread of spiritual truth and

knowledge of Thyself. Bless our College. May love unity and

brotherhood be learnt here; may industry uprightness and courage

grow here and from this place be sent froth continually a stream of

men and women who shall serve Thee faithfully in the Thy world.

Almighty Father who does set men in companies that they

May learn to think little of private advantage and may ever seek the

common good. We pray Thee for this great land in which we dwell.

May the memory of its past ever inspire us; may its present need be

ever present to us; and may its future welfare be our constant

prayer and aim. Have compassion on its toiling multitudes. Root

out superstition, corruption and despair. Grant that we may bear

the man's part in the work that is yet to be done and of the mercy

heal our divisions and make us Thou art one.

Our air, water, land and food are polluted with the pollution rate which has exceeded the manageable capacity of nature. More than 50% of land has been eroded and robbed of its fertility to a great extent. The damage done to the World's biological diversity and eco-system is unimaginable. Our renewable and non-renewable resources are being alarmingly exhausted due to increasing population (especially in context of our own country India, 2nd largest thickly populated) pressure posing difculty to manage threat not only to future generations but even to present generation. 3R's (reduce, reuse and recycle waste) strategy needs to be focused and is the need of the time.

I congratulate Chemistry Department, St. John's College, Agra for keeping these objectives in view and having an international seminar on the topic 'Recent Advances in Protection' and 'Alumni Meet Chemso' on 1st and 2nd November 2019.

    With good wishes and prayers

    Yours Sincerely,

It gives me a great joy to learn that Chemical Society is celebrating its 50th

anniversary and to celebrate the occasion, the Department is organizing an

International Seminar on 1st November 2019. This seminar shall be titled as RAEP

2019 and this is the third venture of the department to organize an International

Seminar on "Recent Advances on Environmental Pollution." This theme assumes

urgency in our times because anthropogenic activity in the last hundred years has

threatened the fragile ecological balance and has put life on this planet in jeopardy. A

great effort is required to apply all our scientic and cultural knowledge and make

signicant advances in mitigating Environmental Pollution. I am sure that this

conference will provide an opportunity to the scientists and researchers to discuss

various strategies, interventions and breakthroughs in alleviating pollution.

I take this opportunity to covey my best wishes to the Department of

Chemistry and the organizers of this conference. I wish them meaningful

deliberations and enriching outcomes. I trust that this seminar would provide new

insights and would contribute toward the goal of sustainable development.

Declamation Speech: A scientic declamation speech is the term used to describe the re-giving of an important or famous speech of a scientist. The speaker re-interprets the original, reproducing its power afresh. This exercise will be set as part of studying public speaking skills. The purpose is to have the student directly experience the power of invention, innovation, technique, method in masterfully crafted language. Through their interpretation the techniques and skills of the original orator are learned and also motivated not only the speaker but also the audience. Declamation examples would include Marie Curie's, Sir. C. V Raman's and Dr. A. P J. Abdul Kalam's Address.

Scientic Extempore: A science extempore speech is an impromptu speech which the candidate is required to make on a scientic topic given there and then. No prior preparation is permissible. Topics usually given are chemistry, bond, bond energy, entropy, endothermic reaction, exothermic reaction, frequency, pressures, uniqueness of electron etc… It is a practice piece for a student to learn the skills of combining eloquent language with equally eloquent delivery.

Late. Capt. Sumant Yadav: Son of soil and Pride of St John’s

The chemical society will ever be indebted to Late Mr Sumant Yadav who was a student of this college in the 70’s and was instrumental in developing this society.

I am his proud younger brother who grew up listening to his mesmerizing persona and bewilderingtrystswith science, arts, photography, debates, sports and studies nally ending up in the Armed Forces.

Born on 8thDecember 1956 in present day Prayagraj, he was hyperactive from early childhood and had that extra energy that is so common in today’s computer age kids but was rare those days. He had so many questions that

nobody could answer and that led to endless experiments and inventions in his early school life. He used to make scientic models and electronic gadgets at home which were very costly to buy and had limited availability in India in those days.

He was joint secretary of Chemical Society, In charge of photography section and president of National Service Scheme. He was hard working and full of zeal and adventurous. He suddenly decided to join army and got selected in his rst attempt. Upon joining he became darling of all ofcers and Jawans very quickly and achieved new heights in a short period of one and a half years of service as second lieutenant in India Army.

Unfortunately we lost him when his Ofcers Bus met with an accident in hills of Sikkim on 22nd March 1980 while still in the front area. We were ooded with overwhelming messages of condolence containing exceptional words of praise for such a junior ofcer from very high ranked ofcers in Army.

He served the family, society and country at different levels and due to his multitalented personality he endeared himself to all who came in contact with him. St John’s College remembers him so many years after his demise just because of his charisma and helpful nature. On this day on the occasion of 50th anniversary of Chemical Society we remember him and pay our homage to a brilliant son of soil who came as a meteor and enlightened the lives of all around him and disappeared.

    Dr. Anurag Yadav (Neurologist)

    Late. Capt. Sumant Yadav

    Dr Rajan

I joined K. E. College Mannanam in 1980 itself and retired as Associate Professor of Chemistry in 2013 Now enjoying retired life, but still teaching Chemistry ,a few classes a week in a neighboring CBSE school (Lourdes Public School Kottayam) . I am sorry for not being able to participate in the Jubilee celebrations of our Chemical Society. I remember with nostalgia, the two years of our activities of the Chemical Society including the Chemical Exhibition we conducted during those days which was a grand success. We were in St John's,during 1978-80 as the MSc batch of Chemistry. We had a grand reunion of our batch last year and the Principal, Head of the Dept of Chemistry Dr. Hemant, Dr. Susan and our beloved teachers Dr. Jain, Dr. Seth, and Dr. Ashok kumar were also with us in that memorable event. I am very happy to know that our classmate Dr. J. S. Sharma will be there as an active organizer of the event. May I wish all success to the Golden Jubilee Celebrations and to the Chemistry Department which remains as a part of our hearts!

    Dear Dr Susan,

Thank you for giving an opportunity to reminisce my association with Chemical Society (CHEMSO) on a landmark occasion. I actively participated activities of the Society and also served one term as class-representative while in the College (1987-91). I recall participating in essay-writing competitions and solving chemistry crossword puzzles. Quiz was my favourite, participating in contests held in other departments and even in other faculties of the College. I take pride in being a winner of Lt. Sumant Yadav Memorial Quiz organized by CHEMSO. Science exhibitions organized by CHEMSO attracted whole of Agra and I fondly remember having put up the lone project in Mathematics. As resident of Bishop French Hostel then, I had opportunity to see from the ringside- the planning, brieng and debrieng of the Exhibitions, organized by CHEMSO involving all departments in Science Faculty, that happened in the Hostel which gave successive Presidents to CHEMSO during my stay there. The picnics organized under the tutelage of CHEMSO were a big draw among students, and had lot of stories and experiences in their wake, to be told and retold.Looking back, I feel CHEMSO was an amazing platform prompting young students from disparate backgrounds and on the threshold of college life, to gain some valuable experience for life. With exponential growth of technology and avenues for learning beyond the classroom there, activities as those promoted by CHEMSO need to be intensied to arm graduating men and women with 21st century skills- collaboration, team work, communication, critical thinking and other set of human skills. The co-curricular and extra-curricular activities should get mainstreamed and allow the graduating students to use the experience in building their personality and career paths. Our higher education warrants such outwardly changes to provide creative, progressive and responsible youth to the society. It gives me great pleasure to note that CHEMSO is in its 50th year! A milestone in the progression of any entity and I salute the founders, promoters, guides and

My Experiences In ChemsoPadmamalika Khanna Nee Hazra

    Asst Prof Chemistry

I have to turn my kaliedescope backwards manytimes over to get to my vivid and varied colored pages of chemsotucked deep inside my brainmemory but one the only factor that it will keep repeating is lighting up at the mention of two names Dr K. B. Lal and Dr. Ashok Kumar the founding fathers of this erstwhile chemical society which celebratesits golden anniversary this auspiciousyear.

Dr Ashok Kumar has been the driving force behind all the activities i took part in and for that matter each one of us were hand picked by him . We all owe our place in the sun to him . Had it not been to him we would have all remained mute wall owers to be content in sartorial bliss but may, not so, we had a part to play. We too had our story to be told and chemical society was the crucible for every possible concoction to be designed and digested both and Dr Ashok gave us full freedom for our artistic expressions.

Ajay, Chaya, Asit, Vandana, Arati and Renuka to name a few we were all partners in everything good and good ie to name a few talent competition

Cricket, Singing, Excursions, Debate, Hobby Expressions

thus sir had a huge task of chisseling the art as well as the persona behind it. Thus we all owe our soft skills to sir and to Dr H.B. Singh also who to great care in nuturing us as young talent at that egling state.this is beginning to become a never ending exercise as fty years is a huge amount oftime to amass many bodies of works of distiguished importance all of which are shining brightly in the chemso sky and Dr. Susan Verghese P will mention them but many congratulations and jubilations to our fold to be a part of this dynamic and brilliant chemical society.

My tributes wiil not be complete if i don't mention Dr. B. C. Bannergi and Dr. G. M Ram my hod and principal then god bless.

My association with Chemso has been a journey dotted generously with some very fond memories. I have been quite an active member and participated in various competitions, winning prizes. Chemso also wonderfully added to my network, and the association with like-minded people has been a source of immense joy and pleasure. Last but not the least, Chemso enables being connected to one's roots,

being in touch with teachers whose blessings play a big role in shaping our careers – a fact I cherish highly. I wish Chemso all the best.

Hearty Congratulations to the Chemical Society (CHEMSO) of St Johns’ College on its Golden Jubilee!!

The CHEMSO is providing an excellent platform to its students in developing their talents in the elds of Science and Technologies including their hobbies.

When I was a member of CHEMSO, it had given me ample of opportunities to learn “how to work in a team” and helped me a lot in developing my Leadership Qualities as a President of Society in the year 1987-88. Both of these qualities contributed me later in building my professional career as well. Number of CHEMSO events specially Science and Hobby exhibition organized at a very large scale during my tenure is still vivid in my memories….

My best wishes and Good Luck to wonderful CHEMSO, its members and Ofce bearers for their bright future.

Lalit Kumar Chemical society (abbreviated as CHEMSO) is a great platform in St. Johns College (Agra) which provides opportunities to students to show their hidden talents in front of public. Basically Chemso organises a number of competitions for students. The very day when any event is organised by chemso, there is always an alumni along with teachers which analyses the participants and helps them to enhance their performance which is a golden opportunity which they get. So at last I must say that chemso teaches us a great lesson that along with education, curricular activities plays a vital role in our life because communication skills, behaviour and manners matters a lot than education.
