Operation

These devices open or close electrical circuits depending on the position of the pointer of the manometer and that of the contact. Therefore, these manometers are not only simple pressure indicators but, by means of a front adjusting key, allows to command electrical circuits to start or stop pumps, compressors, etc. or action acoustic or visual alarms at the desired point.

Page 11: AbCo General Brochure

Type of contacts

Slow-action contacts:

Those of most common use. The indicating pointer of the manometer drags the contact arm simultaneously as it moves along the scale. When the value point is exceeded either clockwise or counterclokwise the swithching is activated. The voltage for these slow-action contacts is either 230Vac =10W/~18VA or 24Vdc. Contact material is Ag/Ni or Platinum. In case of higher swichting capacity it is imperative to install a switching relay.

Magnet contacts:

Are slow-action contacts equipped with a regulable magnet placed in the base of the contact. Suitable where vibration or pulsation exists, as well as for oxidant environments.

Inductive contacts:

An electromagnetic field is concentrated between two axially opposed coils. The switch operates when the aluminium control vane moved by the actual value pointer enters into the space or slot between the two coils. The signal is transmitted without a time lag analogous to the movement of the actual value pointer. The difference in the current consumption of vibrating and non vibrating oscillators is used to drive a swithching amplifier, which turns the input signal into a binary output signal. This is why the switching operation of inductive contacts is not only governed by the slot proximity sensor, but also by the switching amplifier.

Most suitable for classified zones under risk of explosion.

Pneumatic contacts:

A constant air inlet of 1,4 bar is required as an auxiliary energy. A capillary pressure reducer arranged in the air inlet in front of the jet reduces the pressure to approx. 0,1 bar. The outlet pressure at the target jet is approx. 40 mbar. When the control vane enters into the slot sensor the air jet is interrupted. The switching operation is without delay when the red set pointer and the actual value pointer are congruente.

Suitable where power supply is not available, as well as for environments under very high risk of explosion.

Switching functions

MINIMUM

This is a normally closed contact (N.C.), it is, the circuit is closed when the instrument is uninstalled. Once the instrument operating, when the pressure rises and exceeds the desired value point the circuit is opened and the current flow interrupted. When the pressure decreases below the value point the circuit is closed again and therefore the current re-activated.

See the drawing below (dark zone indicates the circuit is activated).

MAXIMUM

On the contrary, this is a normally open (N.O.) circuit, closing it when exceeding a desired value point. Blow that point interrupts the current flow again. See drawing below.

Page 12: AbCo General Brochure

MINIMUM-MAXIMUM

This is a combination of the above mentioned models on the same instrument. Starting from this principle there are many features available in combination (see drawing below).

Single change-over contact (SPDT)

A double electric contact but with a single value point. A contact remains open while the other remains closed and viceversa. This is a very versatile option.

Differential Pressure Gages

PRESSURE

Mounting

A single case size is used for most models of Magnehelic®

gages. They can be flush or surface mounted with standard

hardware supplied. With the optional A-610 Pipe Mounting

Kit they may be conveniently installed on horizontal or

vertical 1-1/4˝ - 2˝ pipe. Although calibrated for vertical

position, many ranges above 1˝ may be used at any angle

by simply re-zeroing. However, for maximum accuracy, they

must be calibrated in the same position in which they are

used. These characteristics make Magnehelic® gages ideal

for both stationary and portable applications. A 4-9/16˝ hole

is required for flush panel mounting. Complete mounting

and connection fittings plus instructions are furnished with

each instrument.

Vent Valves

In applications where pressure is continuous and the

Magnehelic® gage is connected by metal or plastic tubing

which cannot be easily removed, we suggest using Dwyer

A-310A vent valves to connect gage. Pressure can then

be removed to check or re-zero the gage.

High and Medium Pressure Models

Installation is similar to standard gages except that a 4-

13/16˝ hole is needed for flush mounting. The medium

pressure construction is rated for internal pressures up to

35 psig and the high pressure up to 80 psig. Available for all

models. Because of larger case, the medium pressure and

high pressure models will not fit in a portable case size.

Installation of the A-321 safety relief valve on standard

Magnehelic® gages often provides adequate protection

against infrequent overpressure.

See Note.

Select the Dwyer®Magnehelic® gage for high accuracy — guaranteed within 2% of full

scale — and for the wide choice of 81 models available to suit your needs precisely. Using

Dwyer's simple, frictionless Magnehelic® gage movement, it quickly indicates low air or non-

corrosive gas pressures — either positive, negative (vacuum) or differential. The design

resists shock, vibration and over-pressures. No manometer fluid to evaporate, freeze or

cause toxic or leveling problems. It's inexpensive, too.

The Magnehelic® gage is the industry standard to measure fan and blower pressures,

filter resistance, air velocity, furnace draft, pressure drop across orifice plates, liquid

levels with bubbler systems and pressures in fluid amplifier or fluidic systems. It also

checks gas-air ratio controls and automatic valves, and monitors blood and respiratory

pressures in medical care equipment.

Note: May be used with hydrogen. Order a Buna-N diaphragm. Pressures must be

less than 35 psi.

PRESSURE

Quality design and construction featuresO-ring seal for cover assures pressure integrity of case.

OVERPRESSURE PROTECTIONBlowout plug is comprised of a rubber plug on the rear whichfunctions as a relief valve by unseating and venting the gageinterior when over pressure reaches approximately 25 psig(1.7 bar). To provide a free path for pressure relief, there arefour spacer pads which maintain 0.023 inch clearance whengage is surface mounted. Do not obstruct the gap created bythese pads. The blowout plug is not used on models above 180 inches ofwater pressure, medium or high pressure models, or on gageswhich require an elastomer other than silicone for thediaphragm. The blowout plug should not be used as a system overpressurecontrol. High supply pressures may still cause the gage to faildue to over pressurization, resulting in property damage orserious injury. Good engineering practices should be utilized toprevent your system from exceeding the ratings or anycomponent.

Die cast aluminum case is precision made and iridite-dippedto withstand 168 hour salt spray corrosion test. Exteriorfinished in baked dark gray hammerloid. One case size is usedfor all standard pressure options, and for both surface andflush mounting.

Silicone rubber diaphragm with integrally molded O-ring issupported by front and rear plates. It is locked and sealed inposition with a sealing plate and retaining ring. Diaphragmmotion is restricted to prevent damage due to overpressures.

Samarium Cobalt magnet mounted at one end of range springrotates helix without mechanical linkages.

Bezel provides flange for flush mounting in panel.

Clear plastic face is highly resistant to breakage. Providesundistorted viewing of pointer and scale.

Precision litho-printed scale is accurate and easy to read.

Red tipped pointer of heat treated aluminum tubing is easyto see. It is rigidly mounted on the helix shaft.

Pointer stops of molded rubber prevent pointer over-travelwithout damage.

“Wishbone” assembly provides mounting for helix, helixbearings and pointer shaft.

Jeweled bearings are shock-resistant mounted; providevirtually friction-free motion for helix. Motion damped withhigh viscosity silicone fluid.

Zero adjustment screw is conveniently located in the plasticcover, and is accessible without removing cover. O-ring sealprovides pressure tightness.

Helix is precision made from an alloy of high magnetic permeability. Mounted in jeweled bearings, it turns freely, following the magnetic field to move the pointer across the scale.

Calibrated range spring is flat spring steel. Small amplitude ofmotion assures consistency and long life. It reacts to pressureon diaphragm. Live length adjustable for calibration.

Double press. gauges

As indicated in its name, it is two manometers in one. Especially recommended to check the cleanness of filters. The most usual feature is "one dial / two pointers". Another feature is the "false scale": a moving smaller scale moves along with one of the pointers, indicating the differential pressure between boths. A much less common format is a parted dial, made with two separated dials and pointers.

Calibration of instruments

According to the International Vocabulary of main and general terms of Metrology (VIM), the calibration is a ensemble of operations aimed to settle, in certain pre-set conditions (see Calibration Procedures), the correspondence between the values indicated by an instrument and those values known refered to a master, ensuring thus the traceability of the lectures given by the instrument to the basic units of the International System (SI), adjusting the instrument if necessary and expressing this correspondence by means of a table or a graphic.

Abad Controls, s.l., certified company according the ISO 9001:2000 Norms, issues calibration tests for pressure instruments with accuracies 0.6, 1.0, 1.6 and 2.5 with demonstrable traceability (upon request up to the primary national or international master). Anyhow, notice that our test certificates are not official tests; in that case we refer to any of the national laboratoires authorized for that purpose.

Reasons to calibrate

The aging of the components, changes of temperature and the mechanic stress suffered by the instruments slowly deteriorates their functions. When this takes place, the measures began to lose reliability and therefore the performance as well as the quality of the product decreases. This depletion can be detected and limited through the calibration process.

A proper calibration of the instruments provides the certainty that our instruments gather the required specifications. Therefore the point of these confirmations is:

- Maintain and verify the correct performance of the equipment.

- Give response to the required quality standards, (e.g.: requirements related to the ISO9000 Norms).

- Assure the reliability and traceability of the measures.

- The calibration of an instrument allows to know its uncertainty, an essencial value within a quality system to group the instruments in metrologic categories for its further use.

Traceability

Is the property of an instrument that allows to refer it to proper measure masters, usually national or international masters, by means of an unbroken chain of comparisons. According to the ISO 9000 Norms, all the masters used in instrument calibration should be traceable higher rank masters (also called primary masters) belonging to an authorized laboratory, it is, tested in turn by an official organization with a master of better accuracy. Those primary masters should attend their own test certificate, where will clearly appear the source, the uncertainty, the calibration date and the environmental conditions when the results were obtained. A unique calibration mark or TAG is documented for every instrument, that will also be reflected on the corresponding certificate. On the certificate it will be documented as well the type, serial number and uncertainty of the master used, calibration date, stated interval recalibration, calibration method, obtained calibration results, maximum error permitted,

Page 20: AbCo General Brochure

master traceability, environmental conditions and names of responsible) of calibration as well as the calibration department chief signature. The masters used are at least four times better for class 0.25, and until forty times better for class 2,5.

Duration ot the test certificates

It is not stated a standard interval of metrological calibration. It depends on the case of application and frequency of use, accuracy required, etc. AbCo recommends an annual recalibration of the pressure gauges

< Types of certificate

1. AbCo Calibration Report

Made according the internal Test Procedure Nº 837-1. This certificate has two pages. On the first one it is detailed the characteristics of the instrument to be calibrated, as well as those of the master used and its traceability. In the second one are transcribed the readings rising (increasing value) and falling (decreasing value), reflecting the error % span on a calibration graphic.

2. AbCo Calibration and Uncertainty Report

In this case we apply the Calibration Procedure P-002 edited by the Industry and Energy Ministery of Spain.

That certificate is composed of three pages. On the first one are related the features of the instrument to be calibrated as well as the master and its traceability. On the second one are indicated the obtained results (3 cycles) upwards (increasing) and downwards (decreasing), and drafting from these results the medium value, correcting value, the histeresys and the errors % of span, reflected on a graphic. On the third page are indicated the typical deviations and uncertainties obtained, assigning to the instrument the largest one.

< Calibration procedures

CALIBRATION PROCEDURE Nº 837-1

1. The instrument to be calibrated will be introduced inside the room where the calibration will take place, in order to make environmental conditions as similar as possible as those of the reference master. The test room is equipped to achieve the environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, etc) required.

2. Both instruments (master and the one to be calibrated) are connected to the pressure or vacuum generator depending the range:

- Pneumatic pump for verification through compurgation. Fluid used dry and filtered air. For ranges from o up to 6 bar.

- Hydraulic pump for verification through comparison. Fluid used distillated water. For ranges from 6 to 800 bar.

- Vacuum pump, for ranges from 0 up to -1 bar.

Page 21: AbCo General Brochure

3. Measure units (bar, kg/cm², psi…) are introduced on the master pressure transmitter used to make the verification.

4. In case of manometers, the oil filling nipple or blow out disc will be removed in order to equals the pressure inside the manometer and atmospheric pressure and avoid false pressure readings.5. Pressure or vacuum will be generated, depending on each case, inside the calibration circuit, taking the instrument twice up to its final scale for awakening it, falling back to zero after the operation.

6. The calibration itself will take place generating pressure (or vacuum) and noting five, six or more readings (equidistant) rising and falling (1 cycle), depending on accuracy and range, for instruments class 0,6 / 1,0 / 1,6 / 2,5.

TERMS

Instrument: Pressure or vacuum device to be calibrated.

Accuracy (class): Positive or negative deviation of a value from another one accepted as reference master or ideal value.

Master: Measuring instrument destined to define, realize, or reproduce one or more magnitudes values in order to be used as reference for other comparisons.

Correction: Value that, algebraically added the not corrected result of a measuring allows to compensate a pretended systematic error respect a ideal value.

C= Nominal master Instrument readings.

Span: Difference between the upper an lower range.

Error % span: Quotient between the differences of reading and span, all multiplied per 100.

Instrument readings – Nominal MasterE = ------------------------------------------------------------- x 100

Span

Traceability: It is the property of a measuring instrument that allows to refer it to suitable masters, generally national or international, through a unstopped chain of comparisons. According to ISO 9000 norms, all masters used in the calibration processes must be traceable to upper masters (or primary masters) from accredited laboratories, it is, been calibrated in an official organism.. All primary masters will be accompanied of their calibration certificate, where source, calibration date, uncertainty and environmental conditions will be reflected.

Temperature sensors

The operation principle for thermo-resistances is based on the variation of electric resistance when temperature changes. The sensible element is a very thin string of platinum or nickel rolled on a cylindrical or flat isolated bearing. Which ohm value is defined according the international norm CEI 751, it is -100 V at 0ºC and 138,5 V at 100ºC. That's why this sensor is common known as Pt-100. This type of sensor is suitable for measuring temperature between -184ºC y + 689ºC. This sensor is protected by a stainless steel stem. The operation principle for thermo-couples is the thermoelectric effect, based on the generation of a tension or electromotive force because of the difference of dilatation coefficient between two different metals united in the same circuit. The most common thermocouples are the K type (Ni Cr - Ni Al), due to the wide measuring range (-200ºC to + 1250ºC), type J (Fe - Cu Ni) range 0-760ºC, suitable for corrosive environments. The S type (Pt 10 Rh-Pt) is recommended for temperatures up to 1700ºC.

This resistance (V) or tension (mV) parameters are driven to a digital indicator (IDT), where are traduced to ºC or ºF by means of a display. Frequently other output signals are used (0-20 mA, 4-20 mA, etc). For that purpose exists output signal converters, previously calibrated, usually mounted on the connection head.

To define a sensor the following information is required:

- Sensor type: Depending on temperature. Thermo-resistance (3 wire, 2 wire upon request) or thermocouple.

- Stem: Length and diameter depends on application. Supplied in stainless steel and others upon request, such as Monel 400, Hastelloy C-276, Inconel 600, Titanium, refractory steel AISI 310, etc., as well as PTFE or ceramic. Extension neck are available if required. Thermowells and extension necks are also available in order to avoid damages caused by erosion, corrosion, abrasion and high pressure processes.

- Head connections: Not specially required, temperature sensors can be supplied with a flexible silicone cable. When required temperature sensors can be supplied with a wide variety of connection heads: die cast aluminium case DIN-B or DIN-A, plastic case BBK , screwed top aluminium case NEMA IV, explosion proof cases, etc.

- Process connection: By means of a fix or adjustable thread, flange or bayonet type.

Page 59: AbCo General Brochure

Thermowells

Supplied in stainless steel AISI 316 (other materials upon request), thermowells are intended to protect thermometers and temperature sensors of high pressures, corrosive media, etc and also allows removing the instrument when the process is being carried out.

Two main thermowell types are available:

- The weld-in type is the economic type because of it contains weldings in the body. - The bar stock thermowell is specially indicated for high pressures. Special features such as stepped or tapered profile can be performed. Both types can be thread or flange connected in accordance to DIN standards or customer specifications. Special coatings PTFE and ceramic available for wetted parts.

The diameter of the stem (or sensible element part) should be approx. 1 mm. less than the diameter of the thermowell hole in which the stem is to be fitted. Gaps greater than 0,5 mm. between hole and stem have negative effect on the heat transfer and lead to inaccuracies. In cases the gap cannot be avoided the stem may be filled with suitable thermic oil.

When ordering, the following information should be observed: Instrument stem length and diameter (indicating if thread is included), connection thread, process hole diameter, material required and any special influencing variable (high pressure, etc).

Plastic flowmeter

Variable area flowmeters are basically vertical internally tapered tubes mounted with the large end at the top. A float or rotor with an outer diameter slightly less than the minimum diameter of the tube is placed inside the tube. The clearance space between the float and the tube forms an annular passage or orifice. As the tube is tapered, the area of this orifice is larger when the float is near the top than it is when the float is near the bottom. By connecting the tube into a fluid flow line so flow direction is from bottom to top, the float will move upward and be supported at a point where the orifice is just large enough to pass the fluid flowing through the system.

Suitable for non-corrosive gases and fluids. This is the economic version of the glass (MDC) model.

Operating principle

The flow meter is basically composed of a conic tube and a float. The upward flow propels the float to a point of balance defined by the area obtained between the float and the tube.

This balance point depends on:

Flow weight: Pf Thrust of the fluid: E Free pass area: Al

The proportional area related to flow is:

Al = Ac – Af

Where:

Ac = tube section Af = Float section

Each position of the float is related to a flow rate, which is engraved on the measuring tube.

Installation

The instrument should be mounted debe instalarse teniendo en cuenta que:

• The fluid inlet is the lower part of the flowmeter (minimum value of the scale).

• The flowmeter should be installed completely vertical; a slight deviation of around 5-10º related to the vertical may cause errors up to 10%.

• It is recommended to install the flowmeter between two straight pipelines, with no bends, before the inlet and alter the outlet, of approxímate five times the height of the flowmeter, in order to avoid turbulences.

• Do not forget to install seals when installing the flowmeter in the process.

• WARNING: Do not open abruptly the regulation valve: the float may hit the glass tube damaging it.

Cleaning and maintenance

If necessary to clean the measuring tube, proceed to disassemble it as follows:

Swivel the press (1) clockwise between half and one and a half turn, depending on the model, to release

the tube.

Remove the springs or stops (3 and 5) and the float (4). The cleaning of the tube and the float shall be

carried out with a soft brush, avoiding to scratch the tube.

Once the tube is clean proceed to mount the float (4), then the springs or stops (3 and 5), and finally the

seals (2 and 6) making sure they are well centred.

Install the measuring tube, centre it and tighten the press (1) anti-clockwise to achieve the required

sealing.

Pre-set counter MDL

Definition

The water counter embodies an HRI sensor. The liter pointer of the counter activates the HRI sensor allowing a basic resolution of one liter per pulse. The output pulse value can be factory set using the divisor D (e.g. D = 100 means 1 pulse per 100 liters). This counter works in combination with the MDL pre-set counter. The counter is either suitable for cold and hot water (up to 90°C).

This MDL-RBC is a microprocessor with memory, made to control the volume of fluid passing through a pulse-equipped flow counter. Two displays are incorporated in the front. One of them acts as a counter while the other one displays the selected value (volume). The preset should be manually selected by means of the front buttons or by external pulses. The pulses from the counter are discounted in countdown until zero "0000", moment in which the system is blocked.

How to determine a level switch

Determine the total length according to the characteristics of the tank and the liquid level you want to control. According to the maneuver you wish to perform, determine the amount, location and type of contacts.

- Contacts: to define the type of contact (N. Open, N. Closed , NO/NC) are understood without the float. For instance, if you wish the switch to open circuit when the reservoir is empty (and therefore the float in the lower part of the guide tube) you may need the N. Closed type for that position.

- Direction of maneuver: (↑ ↓): Define the direction of performance of the float (filling or emptiying)

for a better adjustment of the contacts.

- Electrical connection: Unless otherwise indicated a common wire to all contacts will be provided. Also consider whether you may need a connection box, connector or cable gland.

- Additional floats: The sensor is by default equipped with one float, the botton stop and, if required,

the top stop. Additional floats can be added if required.

- Working conditions: Check that the conditions of pressure and temperature of the installation match with the ones allowed by the model chosen. Also pay attention to the chemical characteristics of the liquid. In case of doubt do not hesitate to contact us.

Handling and installation

Handling Do not use the housing to transport or to install the sensor in the tank. One it is properly installed, you can rotate 350 degrees the head with the hand to place it in the appropriate position. Mounting The sensor must be mounted vertically. It should leave enough space on the Wessel wall to prevent the float from touching it and avoid the proximity of magnetic or ferrous materials. We suggest to install the sensor away form shaking elements, if any.

Recommendations and ordering example

Determine the resolution you desire in your application by choosing the appropiate step between readings. The smaller distance between readings, the better resolution you get. The resulting measures are a function of the density of the liquid and the float. Unless specified otherwise, the calculations are made base on the density of water (1 gr/cm³). Note that the measurement can never be done from the bottom of the tank because there are some unavoidable levels resulting from the construction of the sensor itself, corresponding to the end of the guide tube and the height where it housed the bouyant level (see chart).

Page 94: AbCo General Brochure

It is mostly recommended to manufacture the sensor to the maximum internal height of the tank as it can put the measurement distance where it suits you, taking into account the above space. In any case, is recommended that the total length of the sensor is somewhat lower than the maximum height inside the tank to prevent curving the tube and impede the movement of the float. You can determine a bound (S) to stablish ana rea where there is no reading at all. In case you want to remove the head of the connection process (for reasons of high temperature, for example) may be specified a dimension € exceeding the standard. To order is necessary the following information:

- Transition between readings (10 or 5 mm). - Length of the zone without measurement (S). - Full length (LT). - Power supply, if any. - Density of the fluid.

Example: In a tank of 1500 mm. high (LT) containing water to be measured up to 90% capacity. The distance from the bottom of the nipple to the maximum fill elevation is 75 mm. (S). Reading pass desired 10 mm. Eléctrically connects to a link existing 4…20 mA (2 wires). The data required for its manufacture:

- Step = 10 mm. - S = 75 mm. - Full length LT = 1500 mm. - Without external supply - Liquid density, if other than 1 gr/cm³.
