Ganges: Daughter Of The Mountains

Sunday, 11 October 2009 New Series

A landmark series exploring how the mighty River Ganges has shaped the wildlife, culture and beliefs of India.

Ganges tells the story of one of the most extraordinary rivers in the world - the Ganges. We follow its journey from mountains to sea to discover how it touches the lives of every living thing in India, and has shaped the wildlife, history, and culture of this great nation.

At every stage of our journey the very best photography captures the majestic scenery of the Ganges, its beautiful and surprising wildlife, and the extraordinary cultural lives of its people. As we travel from the stark beauty of the Himalayas to the lush wilderness of the Sundarbans delta, we witness the dramatic lives of iconic animals like tigers, elephants, and Asiatic rhino but also some of the less well-known inhabitants of the sub-Continent like blind river dolphins, flesh-eating turtles and tree-climbing deer, the world’s largest venomous snake and the world’s smallest pig.

Passing architectural wonders like the Taj Mahal and the ancient cities of Haridwar, Varanasi, Patna and Rajmahal, we’ll bring to life long-dead dynasties to explore the Ganges’ history, and marvel at the incredible colour and richness of contemporary Indian culture.

The first program is set in the peaks and foothills of the Himalayas. Daughter of the Mountains sees the birth of the Ganges, and discovers how the mountain torrents and spectacular scenery have influenced the wildlife of this magnificent landscape and the lives of many millions of people.

Jonathan Creek: The Grinning Man

Sunday, 11 October 2009

At midnight on Midsummer’s Day 1938, a famous Harvard geneticist, Eli Mencken, accepts a challenge to spend the night inside a gloomy old attic room where the ghost of a madman is said to prey upon human flesh. The next morning, he has impossibly vanished; the only clue to his disappearance being a trail of grisly ectoplasm on the bed.

Seventy years on, the strange, unexplained events in the so-called ‘Nightmare Room’ of the gothic house now known as ‘Metropolis’ continue…

When two young women take shelter there one night from a raging thunderstorm, it’s not long before the ominous ‘presence’ claims another victim.

Determined to get to the truth about what has happened to her friend, the fearlessly sceptical Joey Ross (Sheridan Smith) finds herself working alongside veteran lateral thinker Jonathan Creek (Alan Davies), as together they embark on a complex and often dangerous investigation which only continues to deepen as a number of unexplained mysteries take place around them…

Who is behind the ingenious abduction of magician Lance Gessler’s (Nicholas Boulton) beautiful young assistant Elodie (Jenna Harrison) after one of her death-defying performances? What secrets lie buried in the tomb of Gessler’s sinister grandfather who was said to communicate with the dead? What dark and tragic past continues to haunt the magician’s mother, Constance, and can she unlock her childhood memories to furnish a vital clue to the puzzle?

And above all, what strange unholy power resides in the grotesque old portrait of a grinning man that hangs on the attic wall? Is it possible that these enigmas are all connected? Once again, Jonathan must use his formidable powers of deduction to shed light on the riddle, but will he be eclipsed by the sheer raw intuition of his younger counterpart?

Gene is determined to catch him, but the thief’s driving becomes more erratic and the chase ends in tragedy and Gene stands accused of death by dangerous driving. Alex is adamant there was something wrong with Jed at the wheel and sets out to prove the crash wasn’t Gene’s fault.

Jed was a Romany gypsy and tensions are running high when his community discover what has happened. A volunteer, Dr Battleford, tries to diffuse the situation, but Gene is instantly suspicious of his motives. The post mortem shows a high level of sedatives in Jed’s system. Now dealing with a murder investigation, Gene and the team return to the Romany camp, where they uncover a large quantity of sleeping pills.

As the investigation takes a new direction, Gene is invited by Supermac into the inner sanctum of the ancient order of the Masons. Gene soon realises how deep the corruption runs, but will he succumb? Alex suspects that the only man she trusts in this world may have gone rotten, but could Gene just be playing a careful game?

The Mysterious Death Of Cleopatra

Tuesday, 13 October 2009

Egypt’s last pharaoh, femme fatale, romantic icon, the ancient world’s most famous woman, the lover of Julius Caesar and Marc Antony, the ruler of the Egyptian empire. This is the historical image of Cleopatra – a woman who died for love, the victim of a self-inflicted snakebite.

Now 2000 years after her death, this special investigation penetrates the distant past and sheds new light on Cleopatra’s extraordinary life and her mysterious death.

Top US criminal profiler Pat Brown and a team of experts in archaeology and toxicology, psychology and Egyptology, re-examine the suicide story and find that all the leads point to a very different story – the murder of the Egyptian queen. The team identify a prime suspect, a man who had everything to gain by Cleopatra’s death.

Plutarch and later writers, including Shakespeare, write of Cleopatra, with her empire on the verge of collapse committing suicide, heartbroken following the death of her lover Marc Antony. But although this romantic story has been retold the world over, this film discovers that the facts just don’t add up. Far from a romantic suicide, this film unearths evidence that could point to a case of cold-blooded murder.

Pat Brown’s chief suspect is Octavian, the man who defeated Marc Antony and Cleopatra’s forces the year before her death. He occupied Cleopatra’s capital and was poised to claim supreme power. As the film shows, he had the motive, the means and the opportunity. After all, the highest stakes in the ancient world were up for grabs.

Whale Patrol

Thursday, 15 October 2009

This exhilarating and moving story tells of the fight to protect the migrating whale population off the coast of Western Australia.

Nearly 17,000 humpback whales leave their summer feeding grounds in the Antarctic every year to make the perilous journey to the breeding sites in the tropical waters off Western Australia. It’s a trip they have made for thousands of years and it is fraught with danger.

Breathtaking footage and unprecedented access show the threats to the whales that come from both winter storms and from potentially fatal man-made obstacles.

But thankfully, a team of elite wildlife officers known as the Whale Patrol, led by veteran Dough Coughran, are on the alert to disentangle the creatures from the obstacle course of nets, buoys and ropes.

The film captures all the drama, action and raw emotion of whale rescue through the eyes of environmental heroes at the coalface.

Hunter

Friday, 16 October 2009 Final

In a quiet caravan park on a summer’s afternoon a seven-year-old boy goes missing. Miles away – in a seemingly unconnected case – another seven-year-old boy is also reported missing – taken from a children’s play area. These incidents at first appear random, until it emerges that the boys live in the same area.

Barclay (Hugh Bonneville) and his team, including fast-tracked DI Zoe Larson (Eleanor Matsuura) and experienced officer DS Nick Dyer (Geoffrey Streatfeild), struggle to find links between the boys, or clues to their whereabouts. They are increasingly hampered by the force’s senior management and a home office determined not to negotiate with the kidnappers. Frustrated at the speed of events and the team’s lack of progress Barclay calls upon his old colleague and trusted friend Amy Foster (Janet McTeer) to help.

Then an email arrives, sent to the station and all major media organisations, with a picture of James – one of the missing boys. Moments later another email arrives with a picture of Rory, the boy snatched from the children’s play park. The word ‘sacred’ is spelt out in red letters across the two images. Not only are these abductions linked, but there is also a very real and rapidly approaching deadline and ultimatum: the children will be murdered if the kidnapper’s demands to reverse parliamentary laws and air a shocking anti-abortion film are not met.

Barclay’s number one priority is to find the children alive but with a media-hungry perpetrator anxious to air the contentious message and change the law, will Barclay be forced to go out on a limb, putting his job on the line in the process?

Heart And Soul

Saturday, 17 October 2009 Final

A confrontation with Michael (Neil Pearson) about Kyle (Richard Fleeshman) finally gives Esther (Sarah Lancashire) an opportunity to vent the hurt and anger she has felt since he left.

The two choirs rehearse hard as the North West Choral finals approach. Esther is swept up in the competitive spirit, though nothing can match Layla’s (Sarah Alexander) determination that Michael’s choir will win.

On the day of the finals Esther remembers that competition and being the best are not what it’s all about. She makes a surprising decision when forced to choose between Jake (Bryan Dick) and Michael. And the choir sings together again, just for the love of it.

The Bill: Die By The Sword

Saturday, 17 October 2009

Bashing victim Danny Sissoulu (Tunji Lucas) dies in hospital and his assault case becomes a murder inquiry.

The prime suspect, Craig Middleton (Andrew Tiernan) tells police he was out walking his baby through the park when Danny, his young brother Kip (Mohammed Mansaray), and friend Mo Campbell (Lanre Malaolu) confronted him with a knife. He says that he was slashed several times and punched Danny in retaliation.

Danny’s mother, Miriam (Sara Powell) is furious at the suggestion that her sons may have had knives, but the officers are convinced that her son Kip is keeping something from them. So Superintendent Jack Meadows (Simon Rouse) decides to put surveillance equipment in the Sissoulu’s house to monitor the kids’ conversations. But he doesn’t want Family Liaison Officer DC Jacob Banks (Patrick Robinson) told about it.

When officers finally track down Mo, he says Craig confronted them for no reason, and he and Danny got into a fight, but swears there were no knives involved. Then DC Banks discovers that the boys were involved in an anti-knife campaign and begs for the family to be left alone.

However, surveillance in the Sissoulu’s house shows Danny’s parents Miriam and Joseph (Mo Sesay) telling their daughter to delete a video clip on the family’s computer. So, when the family is at the mortuary, DI Neil Manson (Andrew Lancel) arranges for the surveillance team to retrieve the clip.

DC Banks turns up unexpectedly and is bitterly disappointed that Manson didn’t trust him, and later has an angry altercation with D.S. Max Carter (Christopher Fox), who was in on the operation.

But his anger turns to disbelief when he and Manson watch the video of Danny showing off with some knives. With the evidence mounting, Mo’s gangster façade starts to crack and he reveals the truth, stunning the officers…

Taggart: Lunch Club

Saturday, 17 October 2009 New Series

Murder strikes close to home for the Taggart team when DCI Matt Burke’s (Alex Norton) elderly father is found dead in suspicious circumstances in his flat on the banks of the Clyde.

What looks at first like an open-and-shut case of liver failure due to advanced alcoholism takes a sinister turn when it’s discovered Andrew Burke died of heroin overdose.

But the investigation throws up plenty of difficult questions. What is the significance of a 200,000 pound savings plan payable to Burke and his estranged brother John (Ewan Stewart) – a tidy sum, and motive enough for murder.

And could Andrew’s friends Tom Gardner (James Grant), Theresa Braithwaite (Una McLean), and Billy Watson (James Martin) be in danger? The elderly members of Andrew’s lunch club at the local day centre are still reeling from the sudden death of their friend Ellen Phillips. Is there a connection?

Sunday Arts

This week on Sunday Arts, we go on the road with Bell Shakespeare’s Actors at Work as they travel to far west New South Wales to bring Shakespeare to remote schools.

Bell Shakespeare

For almost two decades Bell Shakespeare has performed Shakespeare’s work live to students across Australia with their Actors at Work program. Sunday Arts joined the company on the road for its tour of the far west of New South Wales, to find out how a 400-year-old play can still be relevant to students today. On the way they visit schools in Cobar, Willyama, Broken Hill and Wilcannia.

Artscape: Sculptures In The Scrub

Sculptures In The Scrub is a half-hour documentary that tracks an exciting new regional art project that its organisers hope will breathe new life into a once-thriving country town.

The small town of Baradine is a far flung community in far western NSW. It’s hoped a new sculpture trail at nearby Dandry Gorge will lure travellers off the Newell Highway into exploring the area’s rich Indigenous history and truly spectacular Pilliga landscape.

With only four weeks to create their sculptures, the four artists must embrace the assistance of the local young people and Indigenous elders. It’s a process of community engagement that sees some touching cross cultural relationships formed that will resonate far into the future.

The New Inventors

Hosted by James O’Loghlin, The New Inventors is home to the brightest breakthroughs in technology, innovation and invention. Deciding the winner of these three inventions are: engineer James Bradfield Moody, inventor and journalist Christine Kininmonth, and woodworker and teacher Richard Vaughan. Inventions featured on the program:

SNAKE SAFE – by inventor Graeme Lloyd from Terranora in NSW. Of the world's 25 deadliest snakes, 21 can be found in Australia. While only around three people die in Australia each year from snake bites, around 5000 people are bitten, with hundreds requiring hospitalisation. Inventor Graeme Lloyd, who runs a wildlife management business, has invented the Snake Safe. The invention consists of a passageway spiralling through a series of right angle bends leading to the centre of the trap body and contact point of the trigger. The trap is designed mainly to attract elapids (venomous, front-fanged snakes) that are commonly found close to human habitation, pose a danger to human lives and would naturally find their prey in burrows and holes, which the trap emulates.

A hinged door at the entrance of the trap is released when the trigger is actuated and closes against the floor of the passageway. The lid of the trap is permanently fixed and the trap body is held in a closed position by tabs on two sides and the front. The lid of the trap has a series of holes to enable sight of a captured snake. Once a snake is captured in the Snake Safe it is transported to the release site where the insulation cover is removed and the tabs are released to open the lid of the trap and allow the snake to safely and harmlessly move off.

BALE FASTENER GUN – by inventor Shane Rees from Invanhoe in NSW. When wool is pressed into bales, weighing up to 200kg each, the bales need to be fastened shut. The current system for doing so is time-consuming, strenuous and can be dangerous. Shane Rees, an eighteen-year-old farmer, has been working with sheep all his life. He’s invented the Bale Fastener Gun, a spring-loaded device that does for wool bale fasteners what staplers did for staples, loading fasteners straight into the bale.

RECYCLEANER – by inventor John Turner from Sydney in NSW. High pressure water is a very effective way to clean cars, decks, boats and many other surfaces. However, using a hose wastes a lot of water and isn’t usually permitted, even if there are no water restrictions in force. The Recycleaner is a high pressure water cleaner that’s designed specifically with water restrictions in mind. It uses a small reservoir of water where it vacuums up and filters the water it uses, so the water is recycled in a continuous loop.

Cloud Seeding

Could cloud seeding help combat the big dry? Researchers from Monash University have joined forces with Hydro Tasmania to study the effects of cloud seeding over western Tasmania’s catchment area. Their analysis of the long-term project shows a promising increase in rainfall. But, does it work too well? Dr Graham Phillips takes to the air to view the results and discovers that the increase in precipitation is not to everyone’s liking.

Copenhagen

In early December representatives from nearly 200 countries will gather in Denmark to hammer out what may be the most important agreement the world has ever made. The United Nations Climate Change Conference (UNCCC) is charged with the ambitious task of considering the latest scientific evidence before clinching an effective deal that will coordinate governmental action against climate change. Ultimately the conference goal is to initiate action that will avert the predicted dramatic change in climatic conditions and its likely catastrophic impacts.

How important are the questions to be addressed in Copenhagen? And what could the conference decide to ensure an effective international response to climate change? Jonica Newby puts the big questions to internationally respected climate change expert Professor Will Steffen.

The Royal Institution of Australia

Launched by HRH the Duke of Kent in October 2007 and opening in October 2009, the Royal Institution of Australia is located in the refurbished heritage-listed Adelaide Stock Exchange building. RiAus is the first international satellite of the world-renowned Royal Institution of Great Britain, the flagship of science communication in the UK for over 200 years. Founding fellow of RIAus and the ABC’s very own science royalty, Robyn Williams, takes us on a tour of the dynamic internationally linked hub that will help bring science into the heart of Australian life.

The Wild Gourmets: Suffolk

They say there’s no such thing as a free lunch, but cook Tommi Miers and writer and adventurer Guy Grieve don’t agree. They believe that the British countryside isn’t just picturesque, it’s a rich larder just waiting to be unlocked, and in a bid to prove that Britain’s wild food is best, Tommi and Guy will travel across the UK surviving only on the food they hunt, forage, shoot or catch. But they don’t just want to survive, they want to eat like kings. They are determined to prove that foraging isn’t just about eating grubs and stinging nettles. Tommi wants to create aspirational feasts from the freshest and wildest seasonal produce our regions have to offer.

Each week our wild gourmets travel to a different region in search of seasonal culinary prizes, from grouse in Yorkshire, wild mushrooms in Wales, freshwater fish in Suffolk, and the biggest prize of all – deer in the remote Scottish Highlands.

In tonight’s episode, Tommi and Guy venture to the rich pastures of East Anglia, the ‘breadbasket of England’.

With woodland packed with game and rivers full of fish, it is an essential stop for any food-lover. The most delicious food on offer is pheasant which, with a licensed shotgun and the landowner’s permission, forms an excellent meal. Guy improvises a 'game rail' on which to hang his catch to keep them fresh. Meanwhile, Tommi visits some 19th century walled gardens to find an assortment of riches that include unusual food such as bananas and chillies.

They also venture to the rivers in an attempt to catch some pike, an aggressive fish that is nevertheless a delicacy in France. Tommi makes an 18th century recipe of baked pike in white sauce, flavoured with thyme and the pike’s liver. He takes it to a wild-food party and the locals are delighted by the delicious dish.
