1 Scope 1 Zweck

This Test Method shall be used to determine theodour propagation of automotive trim materials(e.g. body cloths, coated fabrics, carpets, padding,

insulators, felts, etc.) when subjected to elevatedtemperatures and high humidity.

Die Prfung dient zur Beurteilung des Geruchsverhal-tens von Werkstoffen der Karosserieausstattung (z.B.Verkleidungen, beschichtete Textilien, Teppiche, Pols-

ter, Isolationen, Filz und dergl.) die hheren Tempe-raturen und einer Klimaeinwirkung ausgesetzt sind.

1.1 Definition. Odour propagation as determined bythis Test Method, shall be defined as the tendencyfor a test material, when subjected to elevated tem-peratures and high humidity, to release volatile con-

stituents of a smell.

3.2 The test container must not release nor absorbodorous volatiles. Before testing it must be ensuredthat the test container is clean and free of self-fra-grance. For this reason, only containers and lids of

glass shall be permitted. The lid shall be sealed bymeans of a plain ground joint. Sealing grease or seal-ing rings shall not be used.

amount of the test material used in the vehicle, andshall be selected to give the following approx. ratios

of test piece volume and test container volume.

The specific coding will be shown on the individual

engineering drawings, material specifications etc.Where test pieces are taken from large components,they shall be cut to a maximum thickness of 20 mm.

A test piece may consist of several individual pieces.At least one test piece shall be tested.

5 Test Method 5 Prfverfahren

5.2 Test Sample Preparation. The test piece shallbe produced immediately upon receipt of the partsor materials to be tested. Testing shall commencedirectly afterwards. Test pieces shall not be condi-

tioned.

5.2 Vorbereitung des Prfteils. Die Probekrpersind sofort bei Anlieferung der zu prfenden Teile bzw.Werkstoffe herzustellen. Sofort danach ist mit derPrfung zu beginnen. Eine Probenvorbehandlung er-

folgt nicht.

In the event that testing cannot begin straight away,

the test pieces or parts to undergo testing shall bewrapped in an impermeable, odourless material such

as aluminum foil until testing begins. In this way, theas received or installation condition is checked.

5.3 Test Procedure. 5.3 Prfung.

5.3.1.1 Sufficient distilled or deionised water shall beplaced in the test container, so as to ensure that some

water remains at end of test.

5.3.4 Following the specified period in the oven, thetest container shall be removed, and allowed to cool

down to (+23 5) C.

6 Evaluation and Rating 6 Berechnung und Bewertung

After cooling down, the lid of the test container shallbe slide open just as far as necessary for evaluation

by each test person (the lid shall not be raised) andthen closed again as quickly as possible.

Nach erfolgter Abkhlung ist das Prfgef zur Aus-wertung von jeder Testperson durch Verschieben des

Deckels (der Deckel darf nicht abgehoben werden)um den zum Bewerten erforderlichen Spalt zu ffnen

und schnellstmglich wieder zu verschlieen.

Any odour shall be evaluated byat least 6 test personsusing the classification depending on the material asgiven below. No more than 3 of the "odour commitee"shall be chemists.

Zur Auswertung werden durch mindestens 6 Testper-sonen Noten von 10 bis 1 vergeben (siehe Bewer-tungsskala). Mindestens die Hlfte der Testpersonensollten Laien (Nichtchemiker) sein.
