Church not a distribution site, as claimed by ‘food bank’

Vikki HOPESAbbotsford News

A man behind a questionable food bank operation that was recently canvassing for funds in Abbotsford has a new website with misleading information.

Mirek Kwasny, a Mission resident who runs the Single Parent Food Bank (SPFB), lists two churches as food distribution sites. However, a spokesman from one of the churches says they have no current connection to the service.

Newton Fellowship Baptist Church, based in Surrey, is listed on the website (singleparentfoodbank.org) as a distribution centre open three Wednesdays a month.

The senior pastor said the church’s affiliation with SPFB is minor and dates back to the 1990s, when the group used a truck on the property to store some food items.

He said there has been no association with SPFB for several years, and he has requested that the church be

removed from the website. Calls and emails to SPFB have not yet been returned, he said.

New Heights Church in Mission is also listed as a loca-tion, with instructions for people to call the SPFB office number to arrange food delivery.

Emails to the church and its pastor were not returned, and phone calls to the church went to voicemail.

The only other physical location listed on the SPFB website is for a storage facility in Port Coquitlam.

On the website’s home page, Single Parent Food Bank is identified as being a non-profit society through the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).

The group had its status as a registered charity revoked in March 2008, when it operated as Canadian Charity Assist Society. This means it can no longer issue official donation receipts for income tax purposes.

A 2008 letter from CRA to Kwasny and obtained by the Abbotsford News said an audit identified that the charity

Abbotsford West MLA Mike de Jong is expected to announce his bid for premier at a press conference at the Abbotsford International Airport tomorrow morn-ing (Wednesday).

But the other two local MLAs will not be throwing their support behind their hometown colleague in the Liberal leadership race.

Both Randy Hawes (Abbotsford-Mission) and John van Dongen (Abbotsford South) are in the camp of George Abbott, the Shuswap MLA who resigned as education minister to run for the Liberal party leadership.

When Abbott announced his candidacy at a press conference last week, van Dongen was with him on the stage.

Van Dongen said he knew de Jong would likely be running,

and the choice of who to support was something he consid-ered for a long time.

“I’m looking for a different style of leadership,” said van Dongen. “Mike is close to the premier (Gordon Campbell),

and has a similar style of leadership.”Van Dongen described Abbott as more collaborative,

and said he would bring integrity and competence to the job. Because he is from the Interior, Abbott will also help the Liberal party bridge a “rural/urban gap” in B.C.

“I think we have become too Vancouver-centric,” van Dongen said. He particularly admired the work Abbott did with the health ministry.

“He puts getting the job done ahead of the press conference,” van Dongen said.

De Jong, van Dongen and Hawes have done many ribbon-cutting and sod turning events together through

CIRQUE DU SOLEIL HEREThe new, colourful Cirque du Soleil show Dralion will stage seven performances at the Abbotsford Entertainment & Sports Centre June 2-5, 2011. Fusing the 3,000-year-old tradition of Chinese acrobatic arts with the multi-disciplinary approach of Cirque du Soleil, the show’s name is derived from its two symbolic creatures: the dragon, representing the East, and the lion, symbolizing the West. Tickets go on sale Dec. 6. Visit abbotsfordcentre.ca for more information.

MISSING MANMission RCMP is asking for the public’s help in locating a 21-year-old man from Deroche who hasn’t been heard from or seen in 11 days. Josh Bowe was last seen by his family on the morning of Nov. 19. He frequently walks the train tracks from Mission to Deroche. Bowe is described as Caucasian, about six feet tall, thin, with glasses and bushy dark-auburn hair. He is likely wearing a dark winter parka, army-style boots and jeans or “camo” pants. Anyone with information is asked to call 604-826-7161 or CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

‘Fresh start’ for Hemlock ski resortRobert FREEMANBlack Press

A Langley-based developer wants to give a billion-dollar “fresh start” to the once-bankrupt Hemlock Valley Ski Resort by expanding it into a year-round recreation facil-ity.

“What’s unique about our project is we’re trying to include Harrison Lake in our whole program,” devel-oper Ralph Berezan said Monday.

“That would be kind of neat, to go from water skiing in a wet suit to snow skiing on the mountain,” he said.

The project masterplan envisions an all-season facility linking the mountain to expanded resort resi-dential areas and to summer recre-ational activities on Harrison Lake.

A hotel named Chateau Hemlock, residential condos, restaurants, pubs, marina, retail shops and at least one nine-hole golf course are also envisioned in the masterplan.

But first the project must obtain necessary approvals from local, regional and provincial govern-ments, and from the Chehalis First Nation.

After that comes the task of rais-ing development costs, estimated at more than $514 million – and that’s just for the first phase of the five-stage project. Total estimated development costs reach nearly $2.5 billion.

Berezan is undaunted.“I think it would certainly keep

the tourist industry alive in that particular area, if we do get our ap-provals,” he said.

“We’re very fortunate to have two airports near our hill, and I think with the growth projected for the Fraser Valley, we’re going to have access to a lot of people.”

The masterplan notes the exist-ing ski resort had “stalled and lan-guished” due to circumstances that

Getting tougher on crime will mean more demand for prison facilities, and on Monday morn-ing the federal government announced an expansion of 216 more beds for the King Road facility that houses three federal institutions.

“More beds for the Bacon Brothers, etc.,” is how District of Kent Mayor Lorne Fisher char-acterized the announcement.

Abbotsford MP Ed Fast and Minister of Public Safety Vic Toews held a press conference in the gymnasium of Pacific Institution to announce the expansion.

There will be a 96-bed living unit at Matsqui Institution, a second 96-bed unit at Pacific Institution and 24 new spaces at Fraser Valley Institution. They are all located at the Abbotsford site.

Combined with a 96-bed unit at Kent Maximum Security and a 50-bed living unit at Mission’s Ferndale Institution, the govern-ment is investing an additional $77.5 million in prison expan-

sion in the Fraser Valley.Fast said the prison expansion

“will move Canada forward in terms of protecting the public.”

Toews referred to Bill C-25, the Truth in Sentencing Act, which put an end to prisoners receiving two-for-one credit for days they spend incarcerated in

remand prior to their criminal trials.

“Convicted terrorists have gone free on the day of their sentencing (prior to C-25),” said Toews

The local initiative is part of a cross-Canada investment in the prison system of $2 billion over

five years. He said the federal correc-

tions system can handle 15,000 inmates, and presently has approximately 14,300.

He added that criminals should not be released onto the streets before they have paid their debt to society “just to save money.

“This means keeping dan-gerous criminals behind bars, where we believe they belong,” said Toews.

Responding to a media query whether $2 billion could be bet-ter spent keeping people out of prisons, Toews said the govern-ment has “any number of pro-grams” to do that, and does look at electronic monitoring where appropriate.

But he added “the safety of Canadians comes first.”

Abbotsford Mayor George Peary spoke at the press confer-ence, saying the city benefits from the Corrections payroll.

“It’s a green industry, and we’re glad to have it,” said Peary, add-ing “the law and order agenda resonates with our citizens.”

Asked how many new jobs will be created, Pacific Institution warden Glen Brown responded the new facilities will not be completed until 2013-2014, and a staffing plan has not been cre-ated.

He said Pacific Institution has

“had not maintained adequate books, records or internal accounting controls.”

It also stated that the direc-tors of the charity received payments in 2003 which “were not substantiated as employ-ment income or proceeds from fundraising activities.”

The audit also revealed that the charity used two contracted fundraisers who earned 66.6 and 50 per cent of the total donations raised.

“... the charity has not devoted all of its resources to charitable activities due to the extensive fundraising expenses and director benefits,” the let-ter stated.

The door-to-door method of fundraising is still being used. On Nov. 25, an online job posting on Craiglist sought door-to-door canvassers for $13 per hour, with a link to the singleparentfoodbank.org website. The ad has since been removed.

“This is a year-round cam-paign for a worthwhile cause which is particularly crucial at this time of year. Workers needed from Sunday to Friday evenings,” the posting stated.

A call placed by a News report-er to the number listed was answered by a man who said canvassers were needed from “Horseshoe Bay to Langley.

“We’re everywhere,” he

said, adding that canvassers are currently not working in Abbotsford.

The SPFB website says door-to-door campaigns are held, but it does not mention that canvassers are paid.

It also states that cash or cheque donations are preferred, and the money is used to buy “specific perishable foods and baby items requested by indi-vidual families.”

The SPFB did not respond to emails or phone calls placed by The News, which first report-ed on SPFB on Oct. 30, after the Abbotsford Community Services’ Food Bank expressed concerns about soliciting in the area.

approximately 400 staff and an equal number of inmates. However, because it is the regional treatment centre for the Pacific Region (B.C. and Yukon), it has a higher staff/inmate ration than other prisons. Every federal inmate in the region is sent there for an eight-week psychological and physical assessment before going on to other facilities. There is one such facility for each of the five Corrections regions in Canada.

There are approximately 800 staff members working at the three prisons at the King Road site, said Brian Frankish, chairman of the citizens advisory committee for Matsqui Institution.

He called Monday’s announcement “tremendous

news” for Abbotsford, noting that the demand for supplies and services for the expanded prisons will create a greater economic multiplier.

‘Whole lot of benefits’Berezan said included aging facili-ties and difficult access.

“It needed some new chairlifts; it needs some of these things we hope to do,” he said.

The plan, if approvals are ob-tained, is to start with upgrading the existing ski resort to attract more skiers from the Greater Vancouver area with its 2.3 million population.

Progressively adding new features like more ski runs, residential and retail developments – plus the lake-side development at Ten Mile Bay in cooperation with the Chehalis First Nation – the masterplan envisions Hemlock becoming a “world-class” destination resort.

Chehalis Chief Willie Charlie said “we definitely see opportunities for employment for our people” both in the operations of the ski hill, and its redevelopment.

“We’re also quite excited about the opportunities, not just for our com-munity, but for all the surround-ing communities like Mission and Agassiz,” he said.

“If the ski resort is developed as planned, it would bring a whole lot of benefits to the greater com-munity.”

The chief said a formal agree-ment between the Chehalis and Berezan’s development company could be reached by the beginning of the new year.

He said discussions with the company and with the provincial government have been “very forth-right, open and transparent.”

A copy of the draft masterplan is available online at www.tca.gov.bc.ca/resort_plans/_list_of_plans.htm.

An open house will be held Dec. 1 starting at 10 a.m. at the Chehalis Band Hall at 4690 Salish Way, Agassiz.

The final choice could be yours

November has always been a favourite . . . my usual time to get away into the woods and the month of my birth.

Imagine my surprise when I also discovered it is Incontinence Awareness Month.

Fortunately, I have not been affl icted with this particular disability though I am certain that had I been, or ever will be, it wouldn’t take a special month to make me aware of the condition.

It also didn’t take any “awareness” of it for a friend to suggest that, as my birthday ticked over last week, an appro-priate gift for my advancing age might be a package of Depends.

Mercifully, both the attempt at wit and the month have passed. The next 90 days or so will be quite different and it’s possible that a few people will be close to wetting themselves over the impending race to succeed Gordon Campbell.

For the fi rst time in as long as I can recall, everyday people will have the opportunity to choose the next premier of the province, and you don’t even have to be an eligible voter to do it.

Granted, you will have to join the BC Liberal Party, but anyone 14 years or older can do so by paying a minimal membership fee.

Back in 1986, I was in Whistler for the Socred leadership convention where, by delegates, Bill Vander Zalm was the anointed hero, and see where that took us!

This leadership race will not, unless things change in the meantime, see a relative handful of delegates choosing the next leader – rather every grassroots member can cast a ballot.

That is signifi cant. No longer will allegiances or promises sway a powerful few. This time the successful candidate will be the one who convinces the most people that he/she is the best to lead. To be a part of it, all you have to do is be a member and, when the time comes, cast your ballot just like at a regular election.

At the time of this writing, only two were offi cial contenders, but by the end of this week I’m quite sure the remain-

der who are rumoured to take up the challenge will do so. Then the race will be on until Feb. 26, when the ballots are counted, the numbers crunched and our current government has a new leader.

The big question in this race, however, is not necessarily whether the winner

can convince enough Liberals to vote for him/her as premier, but can that person also win the next provincial election?

This not only has the governing party a-twitter but the Opposition NDP, too. For if the Liberals choose the right person, and the polls show a huge boost

in popularity, the NDP has little choice but to hold its own leadership race in the hopes that their “new face” is a more acceptable choice than the new Liberal leader.

If they have time that is, because the new premier will have the option and ability to chart a new course for govern-ment over the succeeding 18 months or call a snap election.

The latter would likely catch any of the fl edgling right-of-centre parties unprepared, along with an Opposition leader who is also facing signifi cant chal-lenges from within her own party.

While that may be a tempting scenario,I think the new premier will take the time to demonstrate the difference between the old and new regimes.

I also have to believe that as this race progresses between now and the end of February there will be a lot of surprised people, not the least being some of the contenders who thought they had it in the bag.

And the fi nal decision on who sets a new course for government and for this province could be up to you, an opportu-nity not to pass up lightly.

ABBOTSFORD NEWS - Tuesday, November 30, 2010

There’s no accounting for taste when it comes to art – in this case, public art.

Mayor George Peary so opined – correctly – last week when asked to comment on a proposal from the Arts and Heritage Advisory Com-mittee that the city commit one per cent of the city’s 2011 capital facilities budget to public art.

However, while there may be no accounting for taste, there is accounting for public money.

And that’s where the question lies in regard to council’s approval in principle of this request.

One per cent of the capital facil-ities budget amounts to $68,000 in the coming year, as the city invests in a new fire hall and library.

Is such an expenditure on art supportable?

Arguably, yes. Works of art can enchance a city’s character and ambience.

Is this expenditure on public art

particularly well-timed?Arguably, no.City council has just approved

a tax increase of 4.5 per cent – another boost in a succession of annual tax hikes over the past several years.

Taxpayers are shelling out to support very expensive public facilities.

The city faces major capital projects over the next several years to improve water and sewer treatment services.

In the broad scheme of city bud-geting, $68,000 is not a major sum.

However, in these times of uncertain economy, and relentless pressure on taxpayers’ wallets, it would behoove city council to be seen to be exercising fiscal restraint.

As Peary mused on the public art spending issue last week, “Is this the time for it?”

Precisely.

Objection to public art cost

Still paying for arena mistake

I want to register my objection to city coun-cil’s decision to allocate one per cent of the capital project budget to public art.

A 4.5 percent increase in taxes is hard enough to swallow without knowing that a chunk of it, however small, will be frittered away on such frivolous investments.

While I enjoy art as much as the next person, investing in luxuries like public art is some-thing you do during times of plenty, not times of restraint.

To hear Tamaka Fisher say it gives people a sense of ownership is like a slap in the face.

Ownership of a home gives people a sense of ownership. But that’s getting more and more difficult for people like me when my property taxes are fast approaching 50 per cent of my mortgage.

So please register my objection to this idea loud and clear.

Kevin Miller

letters

I concur with Nov. 25 let-ter writer Rodd Marr, who believes everyone should go to whatever the new arena has on offer. If these events are not well attended, the defi-cits will come directly from our civic tax dollars.

Definitely everyone who can should see the Heat, Disney on Ice, Globetrotters, and whatever else they can afford. It’s hard to put in a plug here – nothing really has been booked since April, but my support ends there.

The reason Regina Dalton and others are still writing in and complaining, aside from our ever-increasing taxes, is maybe they are still upset about being lied to and used badly, and quite frankly tired of paying through the nose for the ignorant mistake of people who would not listen to anything when there was

still time to go to plan B. You see, Mr. Marr we did

have the answers then, mainly not to site (the arena) in that location, but we were hissed at and booed and our ideas were very unwelcome at the three public information meetings.

Just imagine if this arena was situated more thought-fully, how much more success-ful it could have been located centrally, nearer to shopping and hotel/motels, and with ample free parking.

You see, a few short years ago during our most expen-sive referendum, won by a very small amount of the population, our city council and senior city staff told us in a quite expensive media blitz like no other we have ever seen, “We need this arena,” “If we don’t build it right now we will never have one,” and “It will make

a small amount of money in its first year and more as it becomes more established.”

The main pusher behind building this arena had the good grace to not run again, and some senior staff have since moved on, but for the most part most of the remain-ing council and senior city staff who were supportive of the arena being built in its current site remain incum-bent.

It is likely the insult that there was no consequence for them, they were re-elected, or kept their high-paying jobs in spite of their ignorance, apathy, blatant disregard for the taxpayers and gross lack of vision, which still has people writing letters in such prolific numbers to the editor even though Mr. Marr is tired of it.

Entering into clean contract

Make better decisions

What if all of us who are privileged to live in Abbotsford entered into a social contract which simply committed us not to discard litter along our streets?

A kilometre-long walk along any of our major thorough-fares easily yields a bag full of garbage.

The principal culprits:

McDonald’s hamburger wrap-pers, Tim Hortons paper cups and spent tobacco packages.

With very modest effort, this mess unsightly can be seriously diminished, if not eliminated altogether.

We all will be the beneficia-ries.

Students can walk to school along clean streets. All of will

have the pleasure of livingin a cleaner city to which wecan without embarrassmentwelcome visitors.

And without any additionalcosts to the taxpayers, ouractions will match our wordsin striving towards a healthierenvironment.

David Giesbrecht

Well, I see we are on the hook for another big bill for the Heat hockey team – $450,000 this time.

What a wonderful way to spend our hard-earned dollars, and we didn’t even have a say about it.

Yes, we can go to the games to support them, but a lot of people don’t like hockey, so now what do we do?

It just seems so wrong the way this was set up by our elected city council who are guaranteed a wage.

If a company couldn’t pay their employ-ees’ wages, they would have to go bankrupt.

So this is just not making sense to me. I know our city council is trying to do their best, but I

feel this was and is a bad decision that we arestuck with.

Another five years and a few million dol-lars more we will be free to help the homelessand impoverished children that are on hardtimes right now.

I somewhat feel bad about sending these typesof negative letters, but I feel city council mustbe better informed or educated to make betterdecisions.

We are once again getting a major taxincrease of 4.5 per cent and that really hurts. Some people on fixed incomes don’t get thatkind of increase, so that just means the low-income families will have to go without.

Children’s Theatrestages NutcrackerAbbotsford Children’s Theatre is bringing

the holiday classic The Nutcracker to life on stage this weekend.

The production follows a similar story line to the popular ballet with some added humour sprinkled throughout.

The adventure begins when young Clara’s godfather Dross brings her a toy nutcracker on Christmas Eve that comes to life once everyone has gone to bed. She watches anx-iously as the Nutcracker and his toy soldiers battle with the evil Mouse King and his army of rodents.

In the second half of the play, audience members are transported to the Snow Kingdom, complete with dancing snowflakes and a Snow Queen, and then to the Land of the Sweets featuring Sugar Plum Fairies and waltzing flowers. When the Mouse King turns up, the Nutcracker enlists the help of other characters to finally regain his crown.

“This is just a terrific piece to bring young audiences to,” said show producer Freddy Latham. “You don’t often get to see the actual play and story line told in a different way. Through staging, we try to create something

that’s really quite special. The costumes, setsand what we do with lighting and specialeffects will be quite beautiful.”

All 35 roles in the production are played bylocal actors between the ages of seven and15.

The role of Clara is shared by actressesJane Rempel and Jessica Toews. Thirteen-year-old Jesse Beukers takes on the titlerole of the Nutcracker, while Curtis Harveyplays his nemesis the Mouse King. PeterTchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker ballet pre-miered in St. Petersburg, Russia in 1892 andwas adapted from the story The Nutcrackerand The Mouse King by E.T.A. Hoffman.

The ACT is staging two performances atMatsqui Centennial Auditorium, 32315 SouthFraser Way. Showtimes are at 7 p.m. on Dec. 3and 1 p.m. on Dec. 4.

Tickets are $10 in advance for all ages and$12 at the door. They are available at TourismAbbotsford, House of Fine Art, UnitedOptical, and Abbotsford Parks, Recreationand Culture. For more details, visit www.abbotsfordchildrenstheatre.org or [email protected].

Godfather Dross, played by Ian Bradley, presents a gift to Clara (Jane Rempel), while the character of theNutcracker played by Jesse Beukers stands at attention during a rehearsal of the Christmas play last weekend.

Christmas is about giving and that is why Fountainview Academy Orchestra and Choir are returning to present their gift of music at their 2nd annual Inspirational Christmas concert here in Abbotsford! They need your help to stock the Abbotsford Food Banks’ shelves for Christmas. The students greatly desire to thrill your heart with songs of the Nativity as well as to BENEFIT our community.

Last year’s Christmas concert at the MatsquiCentennial Auditorium was attended with unprecedented success. The Abbotsford Food Bank was overwhelmed with the tremendous amount of food items donated and money donations given.

The students want to support this worthy endeavour again by asking you to donate food items, in lieu of an entrance ticket, to the concert. These food item gifts will be gratefully accepted at the door.

This is a FREE concert for ONE and ALL to enjoy while making it possible for those less fortunate to have a blessing during the holiday season. Due to this being a NON - TICKETED event, seating is on a “fi rst come” basis.

They have been seen on Canada’s Premier Television Channel, CTV, during the Olympics and also aired on other channels in North America. This young group of musicians have travelled internationally… from the US Capitol in Washington DC, to the Ukraine, Guatemala, Panama, and more.

This energetic passionate youth orchestra and choir will be performing 2 concerts at the New Life Church on Saturday, December 4th. The address is 35270 Delair Rd.

The afternoon concert will begin at 4:00 pm (doors open at 3:20 pm) and the evening concert at 7:00 pm (doors open at 6:20 pm). The afternoon concert gives opportunity for those, like some seniors, who are not able to attend later in the day.

They are excited that students from a local Christian high school will be joining them on several musical selections. This will swell the sound as together they celebrate the Yuletide season. Approximately 110 young people ages 15 – 19 yrs old will present this heart warming concert.

An alumnus of Fountainview Academy, Sedric Benson, will inspire us with several selections on his violin. After graduating from this high school he completed his Bachelor of Music performance in violin from Andrews University in Berrien Springs, Michigan. He currently lives and works in Anacortes,WA and loves to bless others with his talents.

There will be an opportunity to express thanks to the school as a free will offering will be collected in the concert to help offset their travelling expenses. Their music DVD’s and CD’s will be available for purchase after the concert AND for those loving gift giveaways there will be a draw for a delightful gift basket at the end of each concert.

We look forward to seeing you on December 4th.

Labour Minister Iain Black said Thursday he has asked staff to consult with business and labour representa-tives over the next three months.

Black’s announce-ment came hours after Shuswap MLA George Abbott resigned as educa-tion minister and announced his lead-ership bid, featuring a promise to review the minimum wage.

Vancouver-Langara MLA Moira Stilwell, the first leadership candidate to declare, has called for it to be increased imme-diately from the current $8 an hour to $8.50, with 50-cent increases every six months until it reaches $10.

Stilwell advocated the same schedule of increases for the $6-an-hour “training wage” that applies to new workers in their first 500 hours of employment. Both rates were set by the B.C. Liberal govern-ment in 2001, and calls for an increase have become an annual Labour Day campaign by the B.C. Federation of Labour and the NDP opposi-tion.

Both groups have advocated an imme-diate increase to $10 an hour.

Black cau-tioned that a sudden increase could be “dangerous” for small busi-nesses strug-gling to recover from a deep recession.

F i n a n c e Minister Colin

Hansen said this week that only 2.3 per cent of B.C. workers

are paid minimum wage, and the major-ity of those are young people who live with their parents.

N e w B r u n s w i c k is the latest province to raise its min-imum wage, going from $8.50 to $9 an hour on Sept. 1 with further increases to take it to $10 an hour by next summer.

In March, Ontario

raised its minimum wage by 75 cents to $10.25, the highest in Canada.

It’s $8.70 in Prince E d w a r d Island, $8.93 in Yukon, $8.80 in Alberta, $9 .25 in Saskatchewan, $9 in Manitoba and Northwest T e r r i t o r i e s , $9.20 in Nova Scotia, $9.50

in Quebec and $10 in Nunavut and Newfoundland.

Heat battered by MooseDan KINVIGAbbotsford News

The Abbotsford Heat were bruised, battered and beaten on Saturday evening by the Manitoba Moose, dropping a 3-1 decision to the Vancouver Canucks’ farmhands at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre.

Cody Hodgson scored a pair of third-period goals to snap a 1-1 tie, but the game’s enduring image was of Heat rookie centre Mitch Wahl lying motionless on the ice with blood pooling around his head after a crush-

ing open-ice hit from Manitoba winger Aaron Volpatti.

The crowd of 7,044 watched in stunned silence as Wahl was lifted onto a stretch-er and taken to hospital.

In the end, Wahl’s in-juries weren’t quite as severe as the worst-case scenario might have been. Heat head coach Jim Playfair said Wahl sustained a broken cheekbone which may require surgery once the swell-ing goes down, and as a cut over the eye.

“He’s fine,” Playfair said fol-lowing Monday morning’s prac-tice. “I visited him last night in

the hospital, and he’ll probably get out (later) today.”

Midway through Saturday’s third period, Wahl absorbed a huge lick from Volpatti as he cut across the middle of the offensive zone with his head down. Playfair said he’d looked at the

replay of the collision numer-ous times.

“We’ll let the league look at it

and see what they review it to be,” he said. “But I don’t think it was a malicious, dirty hit. It was certainly a hit that caught him (Wahl) by surprise, for sure.”

In the immediate aftermath of the collision, Heat winger Jon Rheault went ballistic on referee Andy Thiessen, who didn’t deem the hit penalty-worthy. Rheault earned a 10-minute misconduct, and he expressed remorse for his “emotional breakdown” on Monday.

“I was definitely wrong in my actions,” he said. “That being

The University of the FraserValley basketball teams went for drama on Friday and defence on Saturday as they completed a crucial home-court sweep of the Thompson Rivers WolfPack.

The Cascades women, in particular, ratch-eted up the sus-pense during Friday’s opener. UFV let a dou-ble-digit lead slip away in the late going, as the WolfPack went ahead by a point with 20 seconds left.

Second-year forward Nicole Wierks bailed out the Cascades, though, tracking down an offensive rebound and laying it back in with fourseconds remaining to lift UFV to a 65-64 win.

“I wish I could say our play worked to perfection, but it didn’t,” Cascades coach Al Tuchscherer said, recounting the events that led to Wierks’s game-winner. “It completely broke down, we ended up shooting a three, and it was anair ball.

“But Nicole really stuck withthe play – it’s a credit to her. It was a huge play for our team.”

The Cascades put forward a much better effort on Saturday, particularly on the

Hawks taken to school by Van College

Dan KINVIGAbbotsford News

The W.J. Mouat Hawks ran into a tough and determined Vancouver College squad in the provin-cial AAA high school football semifinals, droppping a 27-3 decision at UBC’s Thunderbird Stadium on Saturday evening.

The Hawks came in ranked No. 2 in the province, but the No. 3 Fighting Irish pulled off the mild upset.

“Defensively, we weren’t bad,” Hawks head coach Denis Kelly analyzed. “But we were just inconsis-tent offensively and couldn’t maintain drives because of the

pressure they were putting on us.

“We couldn’t string plays together in suc-cession to score touch-downs. You’ve got to hand it to them – they

were well prepared.

All in all, I think we had

a great year.”

The Irish got two touchdowns apiece from Adam Konar andCharlie Thorpe, while Tanner Strauss’s 28-yard field goal in the first quarter accounted for all the Mouat points.

Vancouver College moves through to the B.C. finals, where the face the top-ranked Terry Fox Ravens of Port Coquitlam.

defensive end, in a 70-55 victory. Alyssa Gaukel led the way with 14 points, while Tessa Klassen and Courtney Bartel chipped in with 11 points apiece.

Tuchscherer called it a “complete game.”

“Our defensive in-tensity was there,” he said. “We did a lot of real positive things.”

Likewise, the Cascades men’s bas-ketball team played a closer game than they would have liked on Friday, edging the WolfPack 76-71. But on Saturday, the UFV men turned solid half-court defence into fast-break of-fence, winning by a comfortable 92-79 margin.

“We managed to play a little bit more aggressively on de-fence (in the second game),” Cascades coach Barnaby

Craddock said. “At the offensive end, we’re pretty confi-dent we can score points. It’s a bit of a defensive battle for us at times.”

Sam Freeman’s 17 points paced the Cascades on Friday. Joel Friesen led the way with 18 on

Saturday, while Zeon Gray had a remark-able game from the point guard spot: 16 points, 10 rebounds and zero turnovers.

Both UFV basket-ball teams are 4-6 heading into this weekend’s two-game set on the road vs. Trinity Western.

said, it was my room-mate and my best friend on the team.

“When a guy gets knocked out like that, you can’t say it’s a completely clean hit.”

Rheault also visited Wahl in hospital on Sunday evening, and reported the Seal Beach, Calif. native was in a positive frame of mind.

“He just has the best attitude about everything,” Rheault said. “If I was in that position, I’d think the whole world was fall-ing down on me.”

On Saturday, Abby forward Matt Keith blasted a slap shot between Moose goalie Eddie Lack’s legs to open the scoring at 16:09 of the second, but Manitoba’s Kevin Clark equalized just nine seconds later, putting a shot through the wickets of Heat goalie Leland Irving.

Just over a min-ute after Wahl was wheeled off the ice, Hodgson scored the go-ahead goal, tip-ping Bill Sweatt’s shot from the side boards past Irving. Later on, he sealed the victory, hitting the empty net from centre ice with 1:10 remaining.

Hodgson had been robbed by Irving on several golden scoring chances in the Heat’s 2-1 shootout win Friday, but he finally came through with a gritty goal.

“It took a while trying to break him down,” Hodgson said of Irving. “Eventually we just got a couple garbage goals.”

ICE CHIPS: Heat D-man T.J.

Brodie served a one-game suspension on Saturday for spearing Moose forward Victor Oreskovich on Friday.

Abby blueliner Chris Breen did not play Saturday, and Playfair said he’s on a personal leave.

Saturday’s loss dropped the Heat (12-9-0-2) to third in the AHL’s North Division with 26 points. The Moose (11-6-0-2) are fifth with 24 points.

The Heat now hit the road for a three-game trip, be-ginning Wednesday against the Hamilton Bulldogs.

Hawks win B finalDan KINVIGAbbotsford News

At first glace, the host Abbotsford Hawks put together an excellent performance at the annual Dallas Saunders Abbotsford International Bantam AAA Tournament.

The Hawks, after all, won four out of five games against a tough field, out-scoring their opponents 33-11 along the way.

But the Abbotsford squad fell short of its goal of playing in the championship game. After dropping a 4-3 decision to the Kelowna Rockets on Saturday, they could do no better than the B final, which they won by a score of 4-3 over Kelowna’s Pursuit of Excellence Academy. The hosts had to watch from the stands as the St. Albert (Alta.) Sabres beat up on the Rockets 10-2 in the A final.

“It was below our expectations – we felt we should have been in the final,” Hawks coach Troy Campbell said. “We just came back from a tourney

in Medicine Hat last weekend, and we had a league game Wednesday, so we were quite tired coming in. We ran out of gas.”

Campbell professed admiration for the gritty style champi-

oned by the St. Albert squad.

“I was very impressed with them,” he said. “They play big, and they’re very hard-working.”

Abby right winger Jake Virtanen was named to the all-tour-nament team, selected by scouts in atten-

dance. The all-starteam also featured atrio of players from thefourth-place CalgaryBisons – LandonWelykholowa, TannerMacMaster and BrycenMartin – as well asSt. Albert defence-man Zack Gonek andPursuit of Excellencegoalie Payton Lee.

After sprinting out to a huge divi-sional lead in the early going, the Abbotsford Pilots suddenly have company near the top of the PIJHL’s Harold Brittain Conference.

The Port Moody Black Panthers are the team applying the pres-sure – they beat the Pilots 5-4 on Saturday night at Port Moody Arena to pull within four points of

the division leaders. The previous evening, the Pilots had dropped a 5-4 shootout decision at MSA Arena to the Grandview Steelers.

The local junior B hockey club is back in action Thursday, when they visit the Richmond Sockeyes. The next home game is Friday vs. the Ridge Meadows Flames (7:30 p.m., MSA Arena).

Preparing forWINTER on the ROAD

Heavy SnowDriving in snow is different from driving on ice, but they share some similarities. Snow

can be melting and freezing on roads simultaneously, depending on whether salt and sand have been applied by road service personnel. Therefore skidding from hydroplaning and ice may occur.

Another hazard from snow is reduced visibility. Driving under blizzard conditions is very dangerous. Wind and snow can cause white-out situations, essentially wiping out any visibility. In these instances, a driver should pull over to a safe area and wait out the storm.

Some people experience trouble with snow accumulation on roads that have not been plowed. A lower-profi le car with smaller tires may not be able to navigate through snow drifts and end up getting stuck. This can prove dangerous if the car stalls in the middle of a road where visibility is poor.

The best advice for driving in snow is to assess the situation. If it is falling heavily, it can be safer to stay home. If a person must drive, reduce speed and leave a very large buffer zone between the vehicles to allow for emergency stopping.

When approaching intersections or stop signs, begin braking early to prevent skidding through. Also, be extremely cautious of other vehicles, as they may be experiencing trouble stopping as well.

7 OBITUARIES

KNUTSON, Eileen Pearl (Olson)

1923 - 2010

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Eileen Knutson of Abbotsford. She was predeceased by her husband Lawrence; daughter Darlene (Tony) and son Dale. Eileen will be dearly missed and always remembered by her sons Delhmer, Carl (Heidi) and Roy (Beverly); daughters Rosalie (Leroy), Valerie (Jon), Audrey (Bernie) and Donna; and many grandchildren and great grandchildren (too many to list but all loved). Eileen was born in Ratner, Sas-katchewan. She and husband Lawrence moved with the family to BC in 1948 where they lived the remainder of their lives in and around the Fraser Valley. Eileen touched the life of everyone she encountered. Her kindness, generosity and hospitality was paramount and evident to eve-ryone who met her. Services will be held Friday, December 3 between 12:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. at Cascade Commu-nity Church, 35190 Delair Road, Abbotsford.

“We’re all sure gonna miss you Mom!”

Smart, emotional design that captivatesThe 2012 Mazda5 will be offered in two trim grades: a

well-appointed GS and top-of-the-line GT. All versions of the Mazda5 are powered by a new2.5-litre, four-cylinder engine which produces 157 horsepower and 163 lb-ft of torque. A new 6-speed manual transmission is standard, with a 5-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission optional ($1,200). Air conditioning, Dynamic Stability Control, Traction Control and dual front and side airbags for fi rst row passengers and side air curtains that protect all three rows are also featured on every new Mazda5.

“The Mazda5 is the perfect vehicle for anyone who needs fl exible seating and lots of cargo space, but wants that in a stylish, compact, fuel effi cient and affordable vehicle,” said Dave Klan, Senior Director of Sale and Marketing for Mazda Canada. “With the enhancements we’ve made to the 2012 model and a starting price of $21,795, the Mazda5 is a smart choice for value conscious consumers with active lifestyles.”

With the fl exibility of seating for six, or up to 857-litres

of cargo space, rear sliding doors for easy access, 16-inch alloy wheels, air conditioning and numerous safety features, the 2012 Mazda5 GS is very well equipped for a starting price of $21,795. An optional Convenience Package that includes: Bluetooth hands-free connectivity, cruise control, trip computer, leather wrapped steering wheel and anti-theft alarm system is available for an additional $845.

The top-of-the-line Mazda5 GT trim grade standardizes all the equipment from the GS with Convenience Package and adds 17-inch alloy wheels, heated cloth seats, lumbar support for the driver seat, SIRIUS satellite radio, Xenon headlights and Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) for $24,395. The optional GT Luxury Package includes power moonroof, leather seats and a second-row table that folds out from underneath one of the second-row captain’s chairs is priced at $1,790.

Since it was introduced as a 2006 model, Mazda has retailed over 50,000 Mazda5s in Canada and is the company’s second best selling nameplate, after the Mazda3.

Abbotsford twin sisters

Andrea (left) and

Amaris will be offering

a Christmas concert on

Saturday at Aldergrove

United Church.

Christmas is almost here, and a great way to get into the festive spirit is by listening to all of your favou-rite holiday songs and Christmas carols.

Andrea and Ama-ris, local twin singers, are providing just such an opportunity, as they will be per-forming new and old festive tunes at their upcoming Christmas concert on Dec. 4 at 7 p.m.

The sister sopranos

have done several large concert events throughout the Lower Mainland in the past years, and decided that this year, they wanted to put on a performance consist-ing of everyone’s favourite songs from the holidays.

“We love singing Christmas songs, and often sing at various functions in the area at this time of year, but we decided it would be fun to do a

full concert fi lled with all of the familiar songs that remind people of the holiday season.”

Some of the songs they will be singing include “O Holy Night”, “Don’t Save it All for Christmas Day”, “Let it Snow”, “White Christmas” and more.

The evening will feature Andrea and Amaris’ vocal styl-ings, wide ranges and beautiful harmonies,

with elements from numerous genres including pop, classi-cal, gospel and jazz/blues.

“It will be a relax-ing, enjoyable evening in a fun and festive Christmas atmo-sphere,” said Amaris.

The twins will be joined by the phenomenal pianist Mel Bowker, as well as a few other special guests.

Tickets are $10 and can be purchased

through House of James Bookstore in Abbotsford or online

through [email protected]. The con-cert will take place at

Aldergrove Alliance Church (26291 28th Ave).

Christmas with Andrea and Amaris

EducaTOUR has Abbotsford stopAfter a success-

ful spring touring Eastern Ontario and New Brunswick, teen rock band Colfax is about to undertake their biggest chal-lenge yet – a massive

88 day tour across Canada that will see them visit schools from Ottawa to Nanaimo.

“We’re so stoked to be back on the road, playing songs and

meeting both new and old fans,” said gui-tarist Brock Tinsley. “Even though it’s dif-ficult preparing for a tour, they make it all worthwhile.”

The local show will

be Dec. 3 at Abbotsford Collegiate.

Colfax formed in 2008 and shortly after signing with Blue Atlantis Music they released their first album entitled

Keys to the Midway through Universal Music Canada.

The band has opened for Canadian sensations Theory of a Deadman and Hedley.

They have slowly learned their trade – playing some 100 shows in the first year.

The band writes all of their own music, manages their fi-nances, marketing and music rights and have even designed a presentation that they offer to all of their high school peers explaining the many things that they have learned about the Canadian Music Industry.

“We might be young, but that’s why we can relate so well to students who may have been told their dreams aren’t worth pursuing,” said Tinsley. “We’re not here for the money;

there’s way easierways to make thatthan rolling with thepunches that this ca-reer brings.”

Coincident withthe cross-Canadatour – dubbed theEducaTOUR becauseof the strong connec-tion with student fans– Colfax is also releas-ing their second sin-gle “Bigfoot doesn’thave any sisters.”

The band has re-ceived airplay oncampus radio sta-tions across the coun-try and is looking for-ward to meeting someof their listeners inthe different prov-inces.
