NRSW School Liaisons attended a roundtable with Dr. Jill Bidenon January 19 at the University o Southern Caliornia on the“Building Capacity or Military-Connected Schools” consortium. Theconsortium consists o eight military-connected school districts inSouthern Caliornia, unded by the Department o Deense Education Activity and operated by USC. The consortium’s intent is to createmilitary-riendly environments in schools, to spread the word abouteective programs and resources, and to raise military amily awarenessamong educators, administrators and school counselors.
NBPL SLO Robin Williamson, Principal Tanya Belsan rom Dewey Elementary School, and military parent Janelle O’Hara represented
one o the programs highlighted during the hour-long roundtable. They discussed the success o Transition Roomsin 11 San Diego military impacted schools andspecifcally highlighted Dewey’s ConnectionCorner. The rooms welcome and help military amilies acclimate into their new communitiesby providing inormation, resources and ongoingsupport. These one-stop-shops are meant tocreate and maintain connections between parents,schools, and the community, and are located on theschool sites or easy access. “It’s a great way to have the amilies comein, and you can just see their anxiety lessen,” stated Robin Williamson.“They know where to go i they have any questions.”
Tanya Belsan, principal at Dewey Elementary School in San Diego,calls her transition room The Connections Corner. “The room oersmilitary amilies moving to the community a one-stop-shop orresources” she said, noting her school is nearly 90 percent military.“We deal a lot with transitions or amilies in and out, and need to helpthem acclimate quickly so their children can be successul in school,” Tanya noted. “They are a wonderul and unique population that needsupport.”

Ater 23 years, the Coronado Schools Foundation
Telethon is getting a complete makeover. It’sbeing re-imagined and re-energized by a new
generation. Coronado School students rom CMS
and CHS will be producing the event or the frst
time ever. Under the guidance o their teachers,
they will showcase their considerable creativity
and skill in digital media, perormance and
communications. Now known as the Connect-
A-Thon, the event will highlight current and
lielong connections between each public school
and our Coronado community. It will include
STARBASE-Atlantis at Naval Base San Diego
is oering two FREE Spring Open Enrollment
Science, Technology, Engineering, and
Mathematics (STEM) education programs
rom April 2-6 and April 9-13 or 9-12 year-
old children o active duty/retired military/
DoD civilian employees/DoD contractor
employees and students in the San Diego
area. We would like or your children to have
the opportunity to attend and experience
new and exciting activities in engineering
and design. Students will design, and build
CO2 rocket cars, use Computer Assisted
Design (CAD) sotware, and participate in
un, hands-on science activities.
The program is FREE and will consist o
fve, un-flled days o science, technology,
engineering and math (STEM) activities.
Students will learn the basic undamentals
o CAD using PTC CREO sotware. PTC
sotware is used in 48 o the top 49
engineering universities and in over
4,100 high schools and middle schools. Additionally students will design, construct,
decorate and race their own CO2 powered
race cars (kits will be provided).
We want students to discover the wonderul
possibilities that the feld o engineering

has to oer. Students will learn about
design, construction, materials, and the
many career opportunities available to
engineers. Students will use their creativity
and computer tools to measure, collect
and interpret data, calculate area, work in
groups to solve challenges, and much more.
This year’s classes will be held rom
8:30 am to 1:30 pm in the STARBASE-
Atlantis classroom at Naval Base San Diego,Technical Support Center, 3975 Norman
Scott Road, Building 3411, and Room 209.
Parents/Guardians will be responsible or
transporting their child to and rom the
classroom each day. Students will also
need to bring their own lunch, drinks, and
snacks. Students may arrive no earlier than
8 am and must be picked up no later than
2:30 pm each day.
We will begin accepting reservations
starting at 8 am, March 12, 2012. Please
call 619-556-7589 or registration.Registrations will be considered on a frst
come, frst served basis. Registrations will
be accepted until the classes are flled
or by Noon, March 23, 2012. Program
participation will be limited to 35 students
per class. Parents must complete an
Application, Student Permission or
Attendance and Release o Liability, Student
Health and Emergency Contact Statement,
and Statement o Understanding prior to
their child attending the class.

support Coronado Schools Foundation’s unding
to promote academic excellence throughout the
Coronado Unifed School District’s fve schools
and this year’s undraising goal is $160,000.
The Connect-A-Thon is under development and

The OJP Mentoring Program is a six (6) week FREE mentoring program

Transition Support
1. School districts may charge parents
a reasonable amount to reproduceunofcial records.
2. Students have thirty days aterenrollment to obtain a TB test.
3. I a student was in a gited programin the sending state, then he/shemust be placed in a gited programin the receiving state until thereceiving school can completelocal assessments.
4. In states where the Compact hasbeen adopted, Impact Aid will

Eligibility
Any member o the Armed Forces (active duty orSelected Reserve, ofcer or enlisted) on or ater August1, 2009, who is eligible or the Post-9/11 GI Bill, and:
•Hasatleast6yearsofserviceintheArmedForcesonthe date o election and agrees to serve 4 additionalyears in the Armed Forces rom the date o election.
•Hasatleast10yearsofserviceintheArmedForces(active duty and/or selected reserve) on the date o
election, is precluded by either standard policy (serviceor DoD) or statute rom committing to 4 additionalyears, and agrees to serve or the maximum amount o time allowed by such policy or statute, or
•Isorbecomesretirementeligibleduringtheperiodrom August 1, 2009, through August 1, 2013. A servicemember is considered to be retirement eligible i he orshe has completed 20 years o active duty or 20qualiying years o reserve service.

Each year the Naval Ofcers’ Spouses’ Club (NOSC) o SanDiego awards college scholarships to dependent children o
military personnel. In addition to the NOSC Scholarships, NOSC
administers the Cathy Marie Yakeley Memorial Scholarship
which is awarded each year to a spouse o military personnel.
Eligibility:
•Applicantmustbe:adependentchildorspouseofanactive
duty US Navy, US Marine Corps, or US Coast Guard Service
Member; a dependent child or spouse o a retired or deceased
US Naval, US Marine or US Coast Guard military member; or a

On February 2, the Military Kids Unite (MKU)group rom Dana Middle School embarked on afeldtrip aboard USS Bonhomme Richard [LHD-6]at Naval Base San Diego.
This event was coordinated by the Naval Base PointLoma School Liaison Ofcer, Robin Williamson, MKU school co-sponsors (Coach Rossenburg and Ms. Garcia), and the Bonhomme Richard SecondClass Petty Ofcer Association (an ofcial Partnero Dana Middle School).

School partnerships can be benefcial or Navy commands andarea schools. Sailors get an opportunity to connect with theircommunity while earning community service hours which canbe used included in evals, and toward earning the VolunteerService Medal.
The benefts or the schools are insurmountable. Studentsbuild positive relationships with our service members and eeladditionally connected to their military community. Ultimately it raises awareness o the benefts o working with the military community and helps to support our military children in

On January 3, Capt. Scott Adams, Commanding Ofcer o Naval Base Poin
Loma, kicked o a spectacular event at Chesterton Elementary School
His warm positive opening remarks welcomed and thanked the Pearson
Foundation which arrived in ull orce with 200+ volunteers, to give the
school a complete make-over. The organization is non-proft and “aims
to make a dierence by promoting literacy, learning, and great teach-
ing.”Thevolunteersholdannualelddaysacrossthenationandchoseto
beautiy Chesterton by painting and landscaping the campus.
In addition, volunteers visited classrooms to discuss careers and also
provided and assembled care packages o plentiul books and t-shirts
or amilies. The San Diego Unifed School District sta coordinated this
extraordinary project.
Naval Base Ventura County In January, ABHAN Danny Silva o the USS Theodore Roosevelt (along with the rest o the Navy Boxing Team) went back to his old junior high school,Ocean View Junior High, to share some o his lieexperiences with current students - and to thank someo the teachers who made his success possible.
