Soupy's on... at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia

Soupy Sales was presented with a medal and certificatefor his advancement and preservation of jazz duringBrownie Speaks," a celebration of the legacy of CliffordBrown at The University of the Arts.

Now in his early 80s, Sales was a huge jazz fan and

regularly introduced greats like Count Basie, DizzyGillespie, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald and Charlie Parker tothe stage of his 1950s Detroit-based Soupys On TVshow. Sales hosted Brown on his show and as chancewould have it, recorded the performance, which remainsthe only film in existence of Brown playing his trumpet.The clip, which appears in Ken Burns documentary,Jazz, was shown following the award presentation.

In the clip, Sales offered congratulations to Brown forbecoming a father. Following the screening, an obviouslytouched Clifford Brown Jr., who served as the MC forBrownie Speaks," thanked Sales profusely for saving theclip and for all that he had done for jazz and jazzmusicians.
