AAE Central Office e s c a p e s At lanta tornado
Atlanta: The AAE Central Office and residence of Executive Director Ele- nore Baker missed being hit by a tornado by no more than a few feet on March 24th. Just after sunrise on what was supposed to have been a "sunny but windy day," a tornado swept through the northwest side of Atlanta causing death and severe dam- age. Giant trees were felled in the area known as the Argonne Forest; power and telephone lines and poles were downed and hundreds of thousands of dollars damage was done to homes, automobiles, and landscaping.
The tornado passed over the home of Mrs. Baker (which also houses the A A E Central Office) but the property was surrounded by devastation. Just up the street, the residence of Dr. James H. Sherard, a past president of the Association, also escaped damage; however, the Georgia Governor 's Mansion, less than two blocks away suffered damage estimated at between $500,000 and $800,000.
"Even though this hit us at a very busy time," said Mrs. Baker, "the in- convenience of being without power or phone for a few days is small enough compared to what might have been."
