Editorial

Expressing his reverent adoration and admiration for the serene

beauty of 'Utkal' or 'Odisha', Kabibar Radhanath Ray has written,

"Bharat Pankaj-dalamidam

Utkal-Mandal Miti Viditam."

It means that this land of Utkal is well known as a petal of lotus

Bharat. In continuation, Utkalmani Pandit Gopabandhu writes -

"Jagat Sarase Bharat Kamal

Ta Madhye Keshara Punya Nilachal."

It means India is a lotus in the pond of the world and Nilachal is

the stalk of that lotus. We the people of Odisha take pride in our

Odia language, the first language from Indo-Aryan linguistic

group, which has been bestowed upon the Classical language

status of India.

This year we are celebrating the birth centenary of legend

Biju Patnaik. He was a statesman among politicians and

politician among statesmen. Its an opportunity to pay our regards

and tributes to one of all time great son of the soil. This edition of

our Anulipi is dedicated to the Legend himself. It has a life

sketch and contributions of the great leader. Today Odisha needs

hundreds of Biju Babus to channelise our energy in apporopriate

direction. In this, the scientific community of our Institute can

play a major role in polpularising science in Odisha. Lets join

hands and work towards it.

I profusely render my thanks to all who have contributed to

this edition and the editorial team for their relentless efforts for

making this edition a sucess.

Dear Odia Brothers and Sisters of Greater Mumbai,

Namaskar! I am delighted to learn that the Anushakti Nagar

Odia Association, Mumbai is organizing “Kalinga Mahostava”

on October 16th, 2016.

As people outside of Odisha it is not only important for us to

celebrate our magnificent culture and ancient heritage of the

yore of “Kalinga War”, it is equally important to pass these on to

the younger generation. To this end, Kalinga Mahostava will

positively cater to the socio-cultural aspects of the Odia

community and bring it to larger local community.

It is heartening, that outside of Odisha, Mumbai Odias have not

just kept alive but celebrate their heritage and culture and share

with their friends.

On behalf of OSA, I wish Anushakti Nagar Odia Association

officials and members all success in their endeavor. My best

wishes for the success of the event in celebration of our Odia

culture and heritage.

It is an immense pleasure to be a part of this great

occasion in which Anushakti Nagar Odia Association,

Mumbai is celebrating a unique socio- cultural event,

Kalinga Mahotsava, to pay tribute and gratitude to Late Shri

Biju Patnaik, the legendary statesman, the great visionary

and the founder of modern Odisha.

This being the birth centenary year of the legendary leader and

completion of 80 years of independent Odisha, a special program has been

worked out to commemorate the events. Over past six months, the

energetic organizing team has been tirelessly and relentlessly contributing

to realize the event by adding native cultural colors and flavors of

Odisha. A special issue of “Anulipi”, the mouthpiece of “Anushakti Nagar

Odia Association” has been brought out on this eve to add a special

dimension to this commemoration. Very sincere and tireless efforts of the

team have been distinctly reflected in the arrangements of several creative

socio-cultural programs for the benefit of our younger generation and in

enlightening them with the rich heritage and traditions of Odisha.

Indeed, a lot of hard work has gone towards the arrangements of

this special event. I take this opportunity to thank all the unsung heroes for

their every bit of contribution to realize this unique event at Anushakti

Nagar, Mumbai. I wish all the success to this event and also pray Lord

Jagannath for his blessings to the staffs, scientists and engineers of the

Department of Atomic Energy to contribute more fruitfully and effectively to

the progress of this great motherland.

Puri. The 18th of April’ 97 sunset. The sprawling sea-beach was packed with a milling crowd, people from all walks of life.

The purple rays of the setting sun had tinged the entire sea.

Orissa was bidding farewell to her legendary son. Grief was lit

large on every face. People lost their leader. A great hero of our

times, who came, fought and won over their hearts, Biju Patnaik,

the great.

It was the end of a journey. A long journey indeed. As if

the grand show has been shifted from Saradhabali to

Swargadwar. The mortal remains of Biju would be consigned to

flames. Prem, his eldest son, was about to lit the pyre. Four Prime

Minister of the Country both former and the present, were present

there. Nowhere in India in the recent history, so many leaders and

such a mourning humanity had gathered.

Biju breathed his last on 17th April‟97. A life full of unheard of

adventures, of heroism came to an end. He has been a great

freedom fighter, who never bothered to disclose what actually he

did. He often spoke, “It is Biju who creates history for others to

write it “.

Biju was a man of Himalayan height, of courage and

valour. In his childhood he once broke the police cordon to touch

an aeroplane. He could swim across the river Mahanadi in spate.

He could cycle all his way from Cuttack to Peshawar, a distance

of 3000 miles. He could take the challenge of beating he

Superintendent of Police, in a hockey match who manhandled

him before the Swaraj Ashram. The fatal blow landed Mr.Len,

Superintendent of Police in Scotland deserting his job in India.

Here is an eyewitness‟s observation.

“In 1932, Superintendent of Police, Mr Len led a force to

lock up the Swaraj Ashram, in front of the training college. To

retaliate Biju Patnaik alias Bijayananda Patnaik organised a youth

front. Mr Len ruled the roost. Police cracked mercilessly on

them. There was a heavy downpour on that day. The lanes and

drains were filled with rain water. The entire city of Cuttack was

inundated. Biju was grievously hurt. He almost floated with the

current. Nobody dared help him for fear of police atrocity. Near

the temple (Nanda (bald) Mandir), the inmates of Kathjuri hostel

rescued him. In September that year, one hockey match was

organised. Biju and Len were the captains of their teams. Biju

lost no opportunity and slammed Len on his leg. The fractured

leg of Len would discharge him of his and the were home

(Scotland) for good” (Dr.S.C.Dash, Mo Akuha Kahani)

Biju became a pilot before completing his studies. Flying

was his first love. He could realise his salad day-dreams of flying

high in the sky. He started his dare devil adventures. Rakshat Puri

quotes Biju as saying that he and his fellow pilots used to fly to

Tehran to load their Dakotas with arms and ammunition supplied

by the USA. From there, they used to reach Stalingrad by

refuelling the plane at one or two places. They provided guns to

soldiers of the Soviet Army besieged by the Nazis during World

War II. Biju could dare bring Indonesian nationalist leaders like

Sultan Shahariyar and Md. Hata to New Delhi, braving the rough

weather in his Dakota at the instance of Nehru. He dared to lift

the stranded Wavell‟s family from Rangoon to Delhi, when

Japanese invaded Burma. When the Army Chief Lord Wavell

became the Governor General of India, he called on Biju Patnaik

and gladly appointed him his personal pilot. Biju was at his


height of glory then. His daredevil adventurism had made him a

house hold name.

Biju came forward to help the firebrand nationalist and the

queen of India‟s struggle for freedom, Aruna Asaf Ali when she

was in dire need, Aruna met him when he was driving to airport.

He assured her all help.

She was avoiding her arrest, although the court had

pronounced punishment on her. Biju was then the Governor

General‟s pilot. The plane used to have at least three trial flights

before the use of the Governor General. Biju lifted Aruna and

landed her at Bombay Airport. The police smelled it. Biju was

arrested on his way back to Delhi Airport on 13th Sept.1943. He

was kept as a prisoner in Lal Quilla fort. He was tortured to speak

out as to who accompanied him. Biju confessed that a lady had

accompanied him, but he knew nothing of her identity. All this is

part of history. Never did the magnanimous Biju tell it public.

Such was the man and his valour.

Biju was staying in a rented house of Rai Bahadur

G.V.Swaika, in Moor‟s Avenue, Tolly Gunj, Calcutta, when he

booked two suites in Grand Hotel for the office of Kalinga

Airlines. In the upstairs in the same building, Mrs. Meera Mishra,

the wife of slain I.C.S officer Krupasindhu Mishra was staying

along with Raju, her nephew. Raju Mishra, who lives in Cuttack,

narrated the above story. He had been a very good friend of Biju

Patnaik.

In Politics, Biju has had the unique distinction of becoming

the M.L.A of Cuttack, in 1946. Biju trounced a communist

candidate from Jagannath Perasad in 1961. Biju won from

Choudwar and became the Chief Minister, His name became a

symbol of Oriyas indomitable spirit, guts and valour. Nepolean

was his ideal, He said. He was a soldier in heart. He believed in

work.

Biju had many dreams. He had been endowed with an

undaunted spirit. He was proud of his race, tradition and culture.

With that old and out dated 25 seater Dakota he started “The


Kalinga Airways” definitely something out of nothing. Then

came the chain of Kalinga Industrial Empire; Kaling Tubes,

Kalinga Enterprises, Textile Mills. The Kalinga, a daily news

paper became a celebrated name in journalism. The barren desert

of Choudwar, on the bank of river Mahanadi became the nerve

centre of his industrial empire.

He had dreamt dreams unknown to others. During his

tenure of two years of as Chief Minister of Orissa, he founded

Paradeep Port, his dream child, without begging for any help.

Paradeep Daitary Express highway was his another achievement.

It sounds unbelievable that both the projects were completed

much before the schedule.

Biju believed in speed. He knew that files in offices move

in snail‟s pace. He wanted to expedite the movements. What he

thought to be right he spoke eloquently and did with much

fervour. The H.A.L Sunabeda the Burla Engineering College, to

name a few were the creation of this man. The dam at

Tikarapada, eluded him till his death. Biju became a power to

reckon with during the Chinese invasion. Many came out openly

and pressurised Nehru to make him the Defence Minister. He had

been given a separate office in the defence Ministry and became

Nehru‟s chief consultant during the war. Many stalwarts

considered him as a potential successor to Nehru. His openness

and his simplicity turned out to be his worst enemies. What

happened to Subhas Bose, in a sense also happened to him.

Biju Patnaik is popularly known as a fire-brand man, a

daring pilot and politician. He used to call a spade a spade. He

abhorred at „isms‟ and called them “the virtue of small mind”

When there was an infighting among leaders to become Prime

Minister, he remarked that there were a cluster of lobsters

fighting among themselves. Such was Biju and his personality.

To enliven the glories of Kalinga history and the age old

tradition of Oriyas and to give a fresh breath of life to the young

Oriyas, he started a symbolic trip to Bali. He knew that entire

machinery had became corrupt, as the contractor‟s regime


overtook the administration. He believed that democracy would

be stronger only through its people. The unfortunate Oriyas lost

their leader. He had grand plans for them. A Kalinga Bank, a

Kalinga Regiment and a revival of old Kalinga.

The uncrowned king is no longer there. His legend lives.

Chester Bowlers, the Ambassador of USA, has written in his

Making of Great Society- Panchayati Raj industries xxx initiated

by Biju Patnaik xxx had it been properly managed. Orissa could

be at par with Japan.

Biju‟s political adversaries eventually over powered him.

The roamer mongers were set motion. A man who had given

everything to the country would never bring himself to touch the

poor man‟s money. Once he said to an agitating mob “Go, set

fire to my house, if you have the courage, but don‟t touch the

Chief Minister‟s house, which is poor man‟s property”. The king

of Kalinga was at his height, when he magnanimously turned

down Sukarna's offer of 100 acres of land rich with minerals

saying “The kind of Kalinga does not accept gifts from his

subjects‟ Really the large heart of a king could boast so much. To

conclude, I may quote Julian Huxley, "Biju Patnaik, a remarkable

man of India, whose adventures will surely fill a book”.

କିଏ ଜାଣିଥିଲା ଯେ’ ଏମିତି ଯେବ ଫୁଲ ମାଡଯେ ଫାଟିେିବ ପଥେ ! ବେୁ ତନାଘନା ପଯେ ଫଟା ପଥେକୁ ଯୋଡ଼ାଗଲା ସିଯମଣ୍ଟଯେ , ଫୁଲକୁ କିନୁ୍ତ ପେୀକ୍ଷା କୋଗଲା ନାେିଁ ବିଜ୍ଞାନାଗାେଯେ , ଯତଯବ କ’ଣପଥେ ଆଗପେି େେିଲା ! ସ୍ପଷ୍ଟ ଯେଖାୋଉଛି ତ ସିଯମଣ୍ଟ ଯୋଯଡ଼ଇେ ଚିହ୍ନ ଆଉ ପଥେ ଭିତେେ କ୍ଷତ କଥା ନ କେିଯଲ ଭଲ, ଯେମିତି ଆଜିକାଲି ଡ଼ାକ୍ତେମାଯନ ସିଜେିିଂ ସିଯଲଇଯବଯେ ଯୋଗୀଙ୍କ ଯପଟଯେ ଛାଡ଼ି ଯେଉଛନି୍ତ ବୟାଯେଜ୍ କନା କି ଡାମ୍ଫଣ !

ଯେଯବ ଆଉଥଯେ ଆଉ ଯଗାଟିଏ ଫୁଲ ମାଡ଼ଯେ ଯସ ପଥେ ପୁଣି ଫାଟିେିବ ତ ଯତଯବ କ୍’ଣ ଯେବ ! ନାେୀମାନଙୁ୍କ ଅସୋଚେଣ କଯଲ ପୁେୁଷଙୁ୍କ ନନ୍ ଯବଲ୍ ଓ ଆଯେଣ୍ଟ ବନି୍ଦ ଯୋଇ କାୋଗାେଯେ ଅଯପକ୍ଷାକେ ବିଚାେକୁ ଛ’ମାସ ପଯେ, ସାୋ-ଭେସା ଯେବ କିଏ ଈଶ୍ବେ ନା’ ସମାଜ-ସିଂସ୍କୃତି ଓକିଲ ନା’ ବିଚାେପତି ! ବିଚାେପତିଙ୍କ ମୁେଯେ ତ ଏଯବ ସବାେ ଯେଲାଣି ବିଯେଶ୍ୀ ଭୂତ, ତଯମମାଯନ ଧମମ-ସିଂସ୍କୃତିେ ଯେଶ୍ ଯବାଲି ‘ଭାେତବଷମ’ –କେୁଥାଅ ଗଜମନ-ତଜମନ ସଭା-ସମିତିେ ଭାଷଣଯେ ଅବା ପତ୍ର-ପତ୍ରିକାଯେ, ସମଲିଙ୍ଗ ବିବାେକୁ ବିଯେଶ୍ଯେ ମିେିଗଲା ତ ଅନୁଯମାେନ ଆମ ବିଚାେପତିଙ୍କ ମୁେ ଯଗାେମାେ ଯସମାଯନ େଚିଯବ ଇତିୋସ ପିଲାେ ପିତୃତବ ନାେିଁ ପ୍ରଯ ାଜନ

In turbulent water, the fish having fun.

Far-flung from their nest, coz infancy gone.

My brush stroke sketched my life,

ମୋନି୍ତ ସାେ ଗୀତ ଗାଇବା ବନ୍ଦ କେି ନିେୁତ୍ତାପ ଗୋଯେ କେିଯଲ –“ତଯମତ ଟିଯକଟ ପାଇ ଏମ.ଏଲ.ଏ. ଯେବ, ଯେଯଲ ଯମାେ କ’ଣ ଲାଭ? ମଯତ କ’ଣ ମିେିବ? ଆଉ ଟିଯକ ପାଖକୁ ଲାଗିୋଇ, ଯଗଯେଇ ଯେଇ ଶ୍ୟାମେୀ କେିଲା-“କୁେନୁ୍ତନା ସାେ! ମୁଁ ଆପଣଙ୍କେ କି ଯସବା କେିପାଯେ? ଆପଣଙ୍କ ପାଇ କିଛିବି କେିବାକୁ ମୁଁ ୋଜି|” -“ୋଏ ୋଏ...ମେିୋଏ....କିଛିବି କେିବାକୁ ଚାେଁ ପ୍ରତିବେେଯେ?” -“େଁ ସାେ! କିଛିବି| ଶ୍ୟାମେୀେ ଗୋଯେ ଉତ୍କଣ୍ଠା|” -“ଓଯକ, ଓଯକ| ଏଯବ ମଯତ ତମ ବାେୁେ ସାୋୋଯେ ଯମା େୁମ କୁ ଯନଇୋଇ ପାେିବ?” -“ଚାଲନୁ୍ତ ସାେ!” କେି ଶ୍ୟାମେୀ ମୋନି୍ତ ସାେଙୁ୍କ ନିଜ କାନ୍ଧେ ସାୋୋ ଯେଇ ଯନଇଗଲା େୁମ ଭିତେକୁ| ଯବଡ ଉପଯେ ତକିଆ ଯେଇ ଆଉଯଜୈଇ ବସାଇ ଯେଇ ଯଫେି ଆସୁଥିଲା ଯସ| ମୋନି୍ତ ସାେ ତା ୋତକୁ ଧେିଯନଇ କେିଯଲ-“ଏଯତ ଜଲେି କାେିଁକି ଶ୍ୟାମେୀ! ଯମା ପାଖଯେ ଟିଯକ ବସ| ବିନା ପ୍ରତିବାେଯେ ଶ୍ୟାମେୀ ବସିଗଲା ଯବଡଯେ| ମୋନି୍ତ ସାେଙ୍କ ଏକେମ ପାଖାପାଖି ବସିଥିଲା ଯସ| ସଯତ ଯଜୈମିତି ଆଗେୁ ପ୍ରସ୍ତତୁ ଥିଲା ଯସ ଏଥିପାଇଁ| ମୋନି୍ତ ସାେ ଏଥେ ଧୀଯେ ଧୀଯେ ପ୍ରଜାପତିେୁ ସଁବାେୁଆ ପାଲଟି ୋଉଥିଯଲ| ଶ୍ୟାମେୀ ତା ଯେେସାୋ ସଁବାେୁଆେ ବିଷାକ୍ତ ସ୍ପଶ୍ମ ଅନୁଭବ କେୁଥିଲା| ବିଯୋଧ କି ପ୍ରତିବାେ କିଛିବି କେିନଥିଲା ଯସ| କିଛି ପାଇବାକୁ ଯେଯଲ କିଛି ତୟାଗ କେିବାକୁ ପଯଡ| ଏକଥା ଜଣାଥିଲା ତାକୁ| ତିନିେିନ କାେ ଫାମମ ୋଉସଯେ କଟାଇ ଆଜି ଘେକୁ ଯଫେିଛି ଶ୍ୟାମେୀ| ଯକମିତି କଲାନ୍ତ ଅବସନ୍ନ ଯେଖାଜାଉଛି ଯସ| ଶ୍ାନ୍ତନୁ ଆସି
