What is mental health?

Many people would automatically look at mental health as being negative mental health is generally socialised as being ill. When researching and asking people of my age group I asked what words they associate with mental health, they all referred mental health as being unbalanced/not healthy. After researching and finding different definitions, I found that mental health depended on someones psychological and emotional well-being either being sane or insane.

Mental health applies to everyone as much as our physical health, it is based on the way we think, the way we view our lives and how we feel about ourselves. Depending on wether this is negative or positive it impacts on our attitude/behaviour on life and how we deal with things daily.

Marie Jahoda (1958) found different features of mental health and psychological well-being, these are referred to as the 6 characteristics. 1. Self-acceptance / positive self-esteem - a strong sense of identity are relatedto good mental health. According toJahoda, to be mentally healthy, someone must know who they areand like what they see2. The potential for growth and development- not being passive about life and the extent of persons self development.3. Autonomy- Acting independently4. Accurate perception of reality being realistic about what is happening in your world. Not being too unrealistic with you own life, ensuring that you know the truth to your reality and not over always having high expectations.5. Environmental competence- being able to deal effectively with demands of situations and circumstances, this means what degree people will go to be successful and be able to love.6. Positive interpersonal relationships having fulfilling and warm relationships with others. Ensuring people can hold that relationship with someone or people.

health and social text book OCR

After looking at what Jahoda identified, I think mental health relies on how someone looks at life, if positive or negative. The features from Jahodas suggests a positive mental health and positive psychological wellbeing, this is due to having a lot of self-confidence. For example one of Jahodas features identified was to have self-acceptance / positive self-esteem, to mentally well this is essential because being comfortable with yourself makes you more confident. For example if you lacked self-esteem and didnt accept yourself you would have trouble being mentally well as thinking negatively can cause mental illnesses such as depression.

Jahodas theory allows a very realistic definition on mental health, it doesnt say that mental health is a bad thing nor good, it allows an open response depending on the person and their individual views however it does mention the interpersonal relationships and feeling content in relationships with others to be positively well. This theory looks at mental health and picks apart different aspects of it that can distinguish whether you are seen as mentally well or unwell, failing that some aspects of the features dont apply to you may suggest you arent mentally well.

Someone considered to have good/positive mental health does not mean that the person is not of the absence of diagnosis of mental illness but to have good mental health you are capable of dealing with everyday life and be protected against the development of problems that could potentially lead to mental illness. To be considered as mentally well a person should have the ability to fulfil different activities successfully for example having the ability to learn, to feel, express and manage a range of positive and negative emotions. To have the ability to form and maintains relationships with others and also to be able to cope and manage changes.

Someone considered to be mentally unwell stereotypically would be abnormal and not stable, possibly struggle with daily tasks like going to work, looking after family or holding relationships.

What is mental ill health?

Mental ill health is where someone is (should be) diagnosed with a disorder relating to how they view life. Many people with mental illnesses have a condition where they find it difficult to view life the same as people with good mental health. There are many different types of mental illnesses and of severity. Some of the major types are depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, bipolar mood disorder, personality disorders, trauma and eating disorders. The most common mental illnesses are anxiety and depressive disorders, to suffer with these illnesses you should be under some type of medication or therapy. Roshen and Seligman (1989) created 7 features of abnormality

suffering- most abnormal individuals report that they are suffering"People do not come to clinics because they have met some abstract definition of abnormality. For the most part, they come because their feelings or behaviour cause them distress." (Edgar Miller & Stephen Morley, 1986)

maladaptiveness- behaviour which prevents people from achieving major life goals such as enjoying good relationships with other people or working effectively

vivid/unconventional behaviour- ways in which abnormal individuals tend to behave often differs substantially from most people"Generally, people recognise as acceptable and conventional those actions that they themselves are willing to do.... If we do it, it's conventional and normal. If we don't, it stands out vividly as unconventional and abnormal."(Rosenhan & Seligman)

unpredictability/loss of control- the behaviour of abnormal people is often very variable and uncontrolled and inappropriate"We expect people to be consistent from time to time, from one occasion to the next, and very much in control of themselves."(Rosenhan & Seligman)

irrationality/incomprehensibility- others cannot understand why anyone would choose to behave in this way

observer discomfort- observers to the behaviour are made uncomfortable by it

violation of moral/ideal standards- behaviour may be judged 'abnormal' when it violates established moral standards

Rosenhan & Seligman argued that each might not be significant on its own but, when several were present, they are indicative of abnormality.(http://www.integratedsociopsychology.net/Defining_Abnormality/7'FeaturesofAbnormality'-DavidRosenhan&M.html)

After looking at the 7 features of abnormality it is clear Roshen and Seligman, see mental illnesses as very negative. They suggest that at least one of the features is relevant if you suffer from a mental illness, this suggest dealing with mental health most be very difficult which may suggest daily activities are proven to be much more challenging. Changes over time regarding mental healthPeoples idea/perspective has changed regarding mental health this is because before people used to consider mental illnesses to be completely abnormal this is a traditional thought. As in the past mental health was very much frown upon, a lot has changed for example being gay or a lesbian was once seen as a mental health issue and people would be treated for it. In the past people who were gay would be considered mental and be given electric shots as a use of treatment to prevent them being into the same sex.Mental health has evolved over time, statistics say Six times as many patients are now being dealt with by the National Health Service (NHS) compared to fifty years ago. This is because mental health now isnt seen as bad as it used to, people with mental health or the topic of mental health is a lot more open, people feel more comfortable now than in the past about talking about their condition or if their friends/family might suffer from a condition this is because it is found that mental illnesses are a lot more common/ not as frowned upon as they used to.When having mental health now there are a lot more treatment and a lot more support, there are charities dedicated to specific mental health issues to raise money to help people with this condition.

In ancient Greece, they used to have a belief that people with mental illnesses could be cured by having a drill put into their skull to release the evil spirits this was called trepanning. This explains how times are very different as this would never happen now, not only did they believe it was a bad spirit that man a person mental but they believed they could literally drill a hole in their skill in order for it to escape and then they would be cured.

There are a number of different things/treatments now than from the past for example Hippocrates had the belief there were four humours these were seen as the four basic elements, the Greek philosophers came up with the idea that the human body consisted of the four humours, which had to be kept in balance. Not only have do people see mental illnesses as common they also understand they ways in which to treat people with mental illness like. They used to believe that to implant a hole in someones head that they evil spririts would escape, mental illnesses were seen as divine punishment and a sign of guilt for both minor and major transgressions. In ancient Greece, to have a mental illness it was seem to be shameful, loss of face and humiliating. They saw mental illnesses as something to be ashamed of and the person with the illness should be punished. Those that suffered from a mental disorder were looked down at by their community. This could mean they would either get jailed or even put to death. The many few that werent jailed where often looked after by their family and had treatments. (Tasman 1992). This shows a massive change on how the society would now view mental illnesses this is because now days there is a lot more medical research into why someone might have a particular illness. What is very different now is that people arent punished for having a illness, they are helped and sympathized for. In the past people would view the illness as shameful even though people might view themselves as shameful, the community wouldnt they would view it as any other illness like a physical illness that people receive treatment for.

(Millon, 2004) After ancient Greece it was believed that mental illness had no logical basis for genuine understand of mentally troublesome phenomen according to unseen agents. At this time mental illnesses were seen more biological instead of being seen a mystical and supernatural, people started to adapt to the illnesses being considered as more realistic in the sense that its not completely out of the ordinary. This is a more realistic view on mental illness, this is when the change would begin, instead of people viewing mental illnesses as demons or evil spiritis they consider it as being a genuine illness which is more like now days.

Christians used to believe that people with mental ill health were possessed by demonic forces, which would have to be ritually exorcised by priests. They believed that the demons that were deeply embedded could only be driven out by torture or death, this believed this to usually be elderly or eccentric women.

These is a chapter in the bible which made Christians question/believe that people with mental disorders have being possessed by demons. As the Bible is what the religion followed and because they lacked scientific knowledge at this time, they believed this is what happened that made people mentally ill. They thought the way someone behaved, if this meant behaving out of the ordinary that it was due to being possessed by demons. This is a change from now to then as Christians are less likely to agree with mental illnesses been seen as demons because they have a lot more knowledge on social factors on why someone might of gained the illness such as traumatic events during their life etc.

How methods of diagnosis for mental illness has changedDiagnosis have changed a lot for mental illnesses, Section BThe media is usually what influences people of their opinion or their thoughts on a matter for example mental health, mental illnesses in the media are usually shown as negative and normally the narrative to all stories and highlighted heavily in many soaps. For example soaps like EastEnders show aspects of mental illnesses with their character specifically in EastEnders they use Stacey Slater by using her the identify how the illness can impact herself, her family/friends and the audience. The media is very powerful in portraying what they want, if they want to make someone with mental illnesses look strange and scary they can which will influence the audience in their opinion or stereotypes of mentally ill people or if they make someone with a mental illness look vulnerable /weak and dependent they can will make the audience sympathise.

How mental illness is shown in girl, interruptedGirl, interrupted is a film based on a young girl who has been admitted into a psychiatric ward to be treated for having a borderline personality disorder, she has been admitted after suicide attempt. She thinks the treatment will only be a few weeks however it is 2 years.Within this film you see mental illnesses very negatively as the film is based in a mental institution where all patient have different mental health issues, this film is very interesting as mental illnesses are shown from different lights, this is because different girls have different views on life and Susanna the main character picks them apart in her diary. With this film the audience become familiar that people with mental health problems treat themselves very different to healthy people, this is because they tend to hate themselves or injury themselves because they arent happy or because they are confused.

The film shows mental illnesses to be negative the film looks at mental illness realistically and shows how patient really behave and how they are really treated. In this film mental ill people tend to be treated like children, I think this because they are told when to eat, what to play with, when they have to go to bed and they are restricted from going out and doing normal activities. This is a mediated version of mental health and for the audience they would see mental illnesses as strange, this is because the film displays those weird states people with mental illnesses tend to have. The film is based on Susanne a girl with borderline personality disorder, from film/media the emphasis on how much mental problems rather than physical problems can really restrict your life. The media is trying to portray this film as being sensitive to those with mental health issues, because there are dramatic scenes where people cant cope with their life anymore due to a trauma that made her mental state very bad in this film we see a character commit suicide, due to how much she hated her life. The media shows the harsh reality of having an illness of such sort, this can be both positive and negative. It can be positive in the sense it makes the audience release how people have to deal and how they cope (or dont cope) with their illness, the film allows an insight into someones life and their way of thinking. This doesnt show mental health itself as a good thing but shows how mental health can alter peoples thinking. In this case for the character Susanna her condition at the beginning of the film is very negative, as it shows her been rushed into hospital as she has overdosed on aspirin and vodka. In the clip it shows her at her worse points, this shows the impact on her mental illness has on her family. Even though her family are supportive, however its obvious they see her mental illness as negative this is because they see their daughter as dependent this why they submit her to a mental hospital in order for her to receive treatment.

Positive and negative impacts of mental healthPositiveNegative

FamilyThe positive message that is given from the family is that their daughter is now receiving help for the mental health problem that she has. That even though the mental health problem is negative but the fact she has it and has had to go to a hospital and receive therapy, she has now matured and became an adult. This shows that the illness has positively impacted on Susannas life as she is now more knowledge and aware of society, she is less fragile to what life has to give her and how to deal with situations now she has received therapy.

The negative effect having the mental illness on the family would be that they might not see their daughter as much. They might find that because their daughter has to go into a hospital, they might find they have relationship struggle as they cant spend or communicate with their daughter. They illness could potentially mean that they get upset regularly about their daughter and might find they cant control their emotions as they are constantly upset as their daughter is ill and in hospital.

IndividualIn this case the illnesses in the end did reflect positively on Susannas life this is because when she came out of hospital she seemed more confident about life. The illness can effect the individual very negatively, for Susanna having a personality disorder might make her very confused. During the film you can see aspects of where she isnt happy and how she uses sex as a way to control her feelings. Her illness effects her very negatively as it was the reason she was hosptialised and the reason she tried to commit suicide.

Society The film shows that even people that suffer from mental illnesses and that are referred to a hospital can still get out and get better. In this film Susanna is a patient that has to go to the hospital for two years and receive medication and the film shows different features of what happened in the hospital while shes there. The film shows that people are capable of getting better from mental illnesses and that there are people out there to help them.

It shows how people that are mental in these types of hospitals that they arent just crazy people but they do have a life and opinion. It shows that people with mental illnesses can be treated with respect and care and that the hospitals are only created for their safety. The film shows society that mental health people can have fair treatment and that the hospitals arent negative that the characters do make lifelong friends and value their time there. This might make people that have a mental illness fear going into a mental hospital as they might see the reality of what it is like there. They might have thought it was nicer more caring and after watching the film they might fear not only where they are staying but their room mates or other patients in the hospital. In this case they might be scared or fear that their hospital experience is the same as susannas which might make them rethink or not want to go to hospital as they dont believe it will benefit them and could make their condition worse.

How mental illness is shown on Eastenders- Stacey Slater

Eastenders is a soap, many soaps base their storyline on characters lifes. In this case Stacey Slater is an important character in the soap as she has a mental illness, Stacey suffers from Bipolar and in many of the episodes the media portrays her as crazy and implosive, this could be due to her mental illnesses making her do things. During the episodes and the plot of her life she becomes a criminal, this is the media portraying someone with a mental illness to be a criminal in this case Stacey is a murder as she kills the father of her child. The audience might think this due to her mental health problem this then gives a negative view on illnesses, usually when people see things such as mental issues linking to criminals they tend to stereotype all kinds of mental illnesses and label them as criminals. Stacey developed this disorder after losing her best friend, the audience would see that it was from the influence of her mom (that also has a mental illness such a bipolar) this is seen as negative as it has reflected on her daughter. However audience might see this as positive as they can support one and another because they know what each other are going through. Another way the media make Staceys illness look negative is that she is unable to look after her child.

Stacey slater is a character known to be very powerful because of her role, the positive thing about Stacey having bipolar is that people in the audience might feel more comforted that someone in the media has the same symptoms or life style as you so you don't feel isolated and abnormal. The good thing about the media portraying mental health problems is it allows people to become more familiar with mental health itself but how people have to do deal with the condition. BBC say due to Stacey's storyline and disorder more people now are seeking advice about bipolar. The number of 18 to 24-year-olds seeking help for bipolar disorder has doubled in the past six months, according to doctors.

http://img.thesun.co.uk/multimedia/archive/00453/SNN1703SS_453926a.jpghttp://m.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/10004491

In recent episodes of easterners Stacey has just came out of prison, even though this may not seem positive for some people but for her family it is due to Stacey's mental illness it allowed her to cut her sentence as the incident only accrued due to her health problems . This is positive for her family and friends obviously because she was out of jail, most importantly so she could look after her child.

In terms of other characters in the soap Stacey's mental illness is a negative thing this is because for some it has left significant losses in family's due to Stacey actually killing someone. For the people of the square Stacey plays a big part it shows a mix of different characters in the soap, it allows mental health to be seen more commonly especially in a soap such as EastEnders which has such a wide audience and is so regular.PositiveNegative

FamilyThe positive effect Staceys illness might have on the family, is that they may feel they have to give extra care in order to look after her, which might suggest they develop a better relationship. For Stacey and her mom they might feel a lot closer as they both suffer with the same mental illnesses which might make them a lot closer as they can understand each other and it will allow their relationship to be much stronger. It could also be positive on her family as the might find that when Stacey is happy, it allows them to appreciate the time they do have with her. This allows the family to feel more hopeful and postivie towards Staceys illness. All illnesses can effect the persons relatives a lot, espically if it is psychological. Stacey suffering with a mental illness can effect the family very negatively this is because they might find it hard to understand Stacey on a daily bases, they might not understand why she does the things she does. They might not understand why she behaves the way she does but as they would understand that it the illness that is causing her to behave like that. They might find this very frustrating and upset them to see their family member being in that kind of trouble where they need to seek medical help. They might also find it very negative ad that Stacey has a child and they might feel she cant cope with looking after her daughter and cope with the illness.

IndividualThe illness can effect Stacey in some postivie ways, this could be that when she is on her highs that she enjoys life a lot more. She might appreciate her daughter a lot more because of the illness, she might value the childs sense of worth and responsiblit in her life. She might think that her daughter is like her medicine to ensure she stays sane for her, as she ocupices her thoughts. This might be seen as positive in Staceys mind, as the illness gives her a sense of value to her life and her daughter and without the illness she may feel that she takes things such as happiness for granted. The negative impact that Stacey might feel because of her illness might be that she cant cope with daily activities like everyone else. This is a big problem because she has a child she might find it very hard to hold a close relationship with her daughter or her family. She might find it very upsetting that the illness takes over her mood and life.

Society This can be seen as very postivie for the media to display mental disorders specially in a very famous soap such as Eastenders. Society might find this positive as they might feel normal because there are other people like them that are suffering with a illness and they might be able to relate to the character of Stacey. This might make them feel hopeful as they might not feel alone with their illness and due to the programme they may feel they can seek help as they are confident that other people have the same emotions as them.It can also effect society very negatively they might feel if they have the illness that they might not be able to cope like Stacey and become criminal. Society might also believe that even though Stacey is mediated, that all people with Staceys condition are the same as her. This could make society fear people that suffer from this particular illness as they are never sure what mood they might be in.

How mental illnesses affect people in the media- Robin WilliamsRobin Williams is a well-known actor who was 63 from America, he is someone that is portrayed in the media as very happy, life loving kind of character. However as many people didnt realise until his suicide that he was actually depressed, this is surprising considering being a actor for childrens films and comedies and the media seeing him as positive most the time.Robin Williams was an inspiration for all people, he used to have create quotes in a way of making people feel more positive. "You're only given a little spark of madness. You mustn't lose it." This explains the character that Robin was, he used to explain and discuss mental illnesses as something special and positive instead of how others saw it. According to research Robin was also reported to have bipolar disorder, a disorder that affects your mood dramatically. Robin apparently suffered from both depression and bipolar and was in one of the episodes of depression when he took his own life. a suicide due to asphyxia, but a comprehensive investigation must be completed before a final determination is made.Robins portrayal in the media was mainly positive he was uplifting and avoided depression, this shows both negative and positive portrayal in the media. Positive because it shows how mental illness can be seen as something special and not something that can take over your life completely as Robin Williams was a very successful man and even though his health ended his life, he still had many opportunities. However very clearly negative as the illness did take over his life in the end, even though the media saw Robin as very happy, it seems depression and bipolar disorder can make someone so very unhappy with their life even after having a family. Even though mental illnesses are unfortunate to have, as that this was such a popular famous character even though it is very sad that he suffered from it, as the media portray him it is comforting for people that do have mental illnesses, as they believe its not only them and that someone with as much suffering with depression that lead to his death was nothing but negative for his family, suffering from Depression led robin into completely unhappiness to the point he thought his life wasn't worth living. This shows very big impact in the media that an illness can destroy someone's life even those that are famous and privileged. I think his death in some ways shows is positive as it gives the public an insight to the harsh reality of mental illnesses and it makes people sympathies for those who suffer instead of frown upon them. However of course it is very negative a valued person from the media killed themselves after such unfortunate illness. It shows that not all people are happy and this effects the audience a lot especially those that are big fans of robin Williams, as many people idolized his character.Robins family might have found some aspects of robins illness as positive this could be from his highs when having bipolar they could appreciate the happiness in him for however long it lasted. As robin said the madness isn't something special his family may have seen his illnesses as something special instead of something negative and are proud of the success he had from his acting.irit as him could possibly suffer from the same type of mental illness.PositiveNegative

How mental illness affects people in the media- The notebookThe story is told on two levels - one is the present day when Allie and Noah have grown old and live in a home; the other is the story Noah reads from the notebook in which he tells how he and Allie met, fell in love, lost each other, and then found each other again. The end of their love story is tragically altered by Allies Alzheimers diagnosis, but even that has no power over their love.http://thebestnotes.com/booknotes/Notebook_Sparks/Notebook_Study_Guide_Sparks03.htmlThe film is shows Alzheimers negatively because it shows how a girl forgets everything about the man she fell in love with, this shows mental illness in a different light usually in films mental illnesses are used of crazy/weird characters but in this film the audience sympathizes for both the character with Alzheimers and her husbands as you see the dramatic impact her memory/illness has on him. In this film mental illness is shown differently it makes the audience sad, it portrays this illness as upsetting instead of stereotypically it being weird as usually the audience are creeped out by how people with mental illnesses behave. The main characters in the film are impacted very negatively because of the mental illness, for Noah (the male main character) the illness impacted very negatively on his life as his wife forgot who he was and all of their history. This clearly isnt a positive on his life, nor his familys. This is because she has forgot about the family she has and feels lost/confused and isolated. This shows the negative impact on both her and her family, showing how it ruins a relationship because the loss of love has gone because of the lack of memory.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zAWQ9TXsT0s This is a clip from the film the notebook the scene shows when Allie regaining bits of her memory, this could show aspects of being positive this is because the illness allows some memory even though it for a short term. In this clip the illness makes the scene special and the illness allows the couple to treasure on another, making the illness give an essence of specialness.

PositiveNegative

FamilyThe positive thing the mental illness has shown is that for Allie even though she has lost her memory due to Alzheimers but little does she know that she still has the love and support from her family. The illness brings the family together, as a way of supporting both Allie with the illness but Noah for coping with the illness. As elderly characters the illness and the age, ensures that the children show as much love and care they can to their parents which is special. It is very negative on the family as they have lost someone they love, Allie doesnt remember none of her family members. This is impacts very negatively on the family as they would feel unloved and feel a loss. For Noah it is very heart breaking to see that his wife that he has all this history and love story with has forgotten there whole past due to this illnesses. The illness is almost frustrating for Noah as he has worked so hard to get this women he is madly in love and at the end of it, she doesnt know who he is.

IndividualAlzheimers has impacted very negatively on Allie because of the loss in memory she is very insecure. This illness have left her confused.

Section C

The media shape how people think of specific people, people on television are mediated for a purpose. The media use characters in their films, Soaps etc and make their personalities suit the audience they can alter whether a person likes the character or not for example in stereotypical films there is good and evil, where shows a hero and a villain. This is the same also for many other factors, the media can influence people to think either negatively or positively about particular things. In this case mental health, the media can influence the audience view of a character by making the person either good or bad. An example of this could be a mentally ill person being in a Soap (e.g. Stacey Slater) and show her to be very negative making this illness take over her life and control what she does. This would shape the audience into thinking all people with mental health problems behave like this, this is how the media works it can marginalise specific groups and make the audience judge them from how another character is portrayed.

The media is used by almost everyone the mass media can be books, newspapers, magazines, photography, films, radio and television, it can also be new media which is the internet (social networking). Books can change someones perspective on subjects, a book is part of the media as it can alter the way someone looks at someone. If mental illnesses are shown as something special and different about someone, something that people should be proud of instead of ashamed, it will make the audience change their opinion on how all people with mental illnesses are stereotyped. However the media and social construction produces the idea of stereotyping, stereotyping is when people/someone can fit into categories in society. Usually this is because the media has associated these types of people as all been very similar from example people stereotype people who wear tracksuits and to be on a street corner to be a chav this is just because the media have created this way of thinking.

An event could happen that could be broadcasted across the media which includes the TV, the newspaper and the internet so everyone can see. This accident could be about a murder that happened, the murder could be mentally ill and could be described as dangerous because of the medical health they are very unaware of what they are doing. As this has been shown over all medias everyone who has viewed it might get a sudden judgement on all people with mental illnesses and linking them with the idea of murders, this is called moral panic where the media label a group of people and society fear them. They could avoid giving this label for mental people my not stereotyping all people that have the same illness, they should make it clear why this person might of committed instead of just presuming that it was the illness that lead them to commit the crime.
