Constitutionof

Lambda Pi Eta - National Organization

Article I - Name

The name of the Speech Communication Association’s Honor Society shall be Lambda Pi Eta.1

Article II - Purpose and Activities

Section 1. The purposes of Lambda Pi Eta shall be: (a) to recognize, foster and reward outstandingscholastic achievement in communication studies; (b) to stimulate interest in the field of communication;(c) to promote and encourage professional development among communication majors; (d) to provide anopportunity to discuss and exchange ideas in the field of communication; (e) to establish and maintaincloser relationships and mutual understanding between speech communication studies faculty andstudents; and (f) to explore options for graduate education in communication studies.

Section 2. Lambda Pi Eta is the honor society of the Speech Communication Association. Lambda PiEta exists to further the mission of the Association and is subject to the Association's policies andprocedures.

Section 3. Lambda Pi Eta chapters may sanction undergraduate honors conferences; propose programsand workshops at national, regional, and state professional association conventions; recognizeoutstanding undergraduate scholarship with awards or prizes; recognize outstanding faculty contributionsin undergraduate teaching, program advising, or chapter advising; establish programs of faculty-studentmentorships; and conduct other activities consistent with the stated purposes of Lambda Pi Eta.

Article III - National Administration

Section 1. Lambda Pi Eta will be administered by the Speech Communication Association, which is not-for—profit organization, and housed in the national office of the Speech Communication Association.Administrative and financial records will be housed in the Speech Communication Association’s nationaloffice. Lambda Pi Eta's financial records will be included as part of the yearly audit of the SpeechCommunication Association.

Section 2. The Executive Director of the Speech Communication Association is responsible to theSpeech Communication Association for the management of Lambda Pi Eta.

Section 3. The Executive Director of the Speech Communication Association will appoint the NationalDirector of Lambda Pi Eta, who will serve at the pleasure of the Executive Director.

Section 4. The Executive Director of the Speech Communication Association can appoint any staffsupport that is needed to carry out the programs and mission of the honor society.

Section 5. The National Director of Lambda Pi Eta will consult with Lambda Pi Eta’s National StudentOfficers and Faculty Advisory Board in administrating the honor society.

North Carolina State’s Beta Chapter of the national communica~tion undergraduate honor society, Lambda P1.Eta, again struckpay dirt at the annual convention of the Speech CommunicationAssociation last week in Chicago.

The Beta chapter has long dominated the top offices in thisprestigeous honor society. The same held true this year asoutgoing President Jill Miller was replaced by another BetaChapter member, Christine Seichi. Ms. Seichi, who plans toattend graduate school at the University of Oklahoma andSouthern California in intercultural communication, was electedwithout opposition.

In addition to again capturing the national presidency, theBeta Chapter will now serve as national headquarters of LambdaPi Eta. Dr. Raymond S. Rodgers. Professor and Associate Headin the Department of Communication at State, mOVed up fromNational Faculty Adviser to National Executive Director of thesociety. Since its founding in 1985, LPH has been headquarteredat the Alpha chapter at the University of Arkansas. All thesociety’s files will soon be moved to State and the organizationwill be run from here.

In another important development, the national board of LPH hasrecently authorized the implementation of a national journal forundergraduate research. Named Menggg, the journal will also behoused at N.C. State, and its founding editor will be Dr. RobertSchrag, Associate Professor of Communication. M33393 will havean editorial board made up of both students and faculty, andwill publish original research authored by undergraduates andresearch by faculty aimed at undergraduate curricular concerns.

The primary purposes of Lambda Pi Eta are to foster under-graduate research, to develop interest in graduate education incommunication, and to encourage interest in academic careers.LPH membership is reserved exclusively for undergraduatecommunication majors who have earned minimum grade pointaverages of 3.0 overall and 3.25 in their major. In a typicaldepartment, this represents about the top 5% of students.

ARTICLE I - NAME

SECTION 1. The name of this national communication honors societyshall be "Lambda Pi Eta" with each Greek letter representing whatAristotle described in his RHETORIC as the three modes ofpersuasion——-logos, pathos and ethos.

ARTICLE II - PURPOSES

SECTION 1. The purposes of this Communication Honor Society shallbe: (a) to recognize, foster and reward outstanding scholasticachievement; (b) to stimulate interest in the field of communicationstudies; (c) to promote and encourage professional development amongcommunication majors; (d) to provide an opportunity to discuss andexchange ideas in the field of communication studies; (e) toestablish and maintain closer relationships and mutual understandingbetween faculty and students; and (f) to explore options for furthergraduate education.

SECTION 2. To further the purposes of Lambda Pi Eta, the Society andeach chapter may sanction undergraduate honors conferences; sponsorprograms and workshops at national, regional and state professionalassociation conventions; recognize outstanding undergraduatescholarship with awards or prizes; recognize outstanding facultycontributions in undergraduate teaching, program advising or chapteradvising; establish programs of faculty-student mentorships; orconduct other activities consistent with the stated purposes ofLambda Pi Eta.

ARTICLE III - MEMBERSHIP

SECTION 1. Eligibility for Membership. The active membership shallbe composed of undergraduate and/or graduate students who havedemonstrated an interest in the field of communication studies at theinstitution where the chapter is officially recognized and who haveachieved a high level of academic excellence. Specifically, to beeligible for membership, the student must have completed forty-five(45) semester hours or the equivalent (Sophomore standing) ‘undergraduate courses; have a cumulatiVe grade point average of atleast 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale); have completed the equivalent of ninesemester hours in courses in communication; and have a minimum gradepoint average of 3.25 (on a 4.0 scale) in communication courses.

SECTION 2. Privileges of Membership. An active member shall beeligible to vote at all chapter meetings of the Society, be eligible 'for election to chapter offices, and be eligible to attend scholarly‘presentations and colloquia of the sponsoring academic department.

SECTION 3. Associate Membership. The members of any chapter may, bymajority vote, confer Associate Membership status upon communicationfaculty members or guest speakers who demonstrate exceptionalcommitment to the goals of the Society or make outstandingcontributions to academic goals of the chapter. Associate Membersmay not vote or hold office in the chapter or the Society.

LAMBDA PI ETAARTICLE IV - OFFICERS

SECTION 1. Offices. The officers of each chapter shall bePresident, Vice President, Scholarship Officer, Treasurer, andSecretary—Reporter. In addition, a faculty advisor shall be electedannually from the faculty of the sponsoring academic department.

SECTION 2. Duties. Each officer shall have the followingresponsibilities: (1) The President shall announce all meetings,preside in the conducting of business and actively promote thepurposes of Lambda Pi Eta in the university community; (2) theVice-President shall be responsible for special programs andprojects, plan the annual Lambda Pi Eta chapter banquet, and serve inthe absence of the President; (3) the Scholarship Officer shall beresponsible for encouraging academic excellence and stimulatingintellectual inquiry among the members through activities such asinviting guest speakers, informing members of opportunities forresearch and involvement in professional associations, determiningthe eligibility of and recruiting new members and presenting awardsfor outstanding contributions; (4) the Treasurer shall beresponsible for collecting annual dues, disbursing funds forappropriate organizational expense and accounting for those funds;and (5) the Secretary-Reporter shall keep a complete set of minutesof the business of the chapter, deposit the minutes with the facultyadvisor at the expiration of the term of office, assure adequatemedia coverage of the activities of Lambda Pi Eta and keep a recordof media coverage of chapter activities.

SECTION 3. Terms of Office. Officers shall be elected for terms ofone academic year. All officers shall be elected from and by theactive members at the last regular meeting of the academic year andshall assume the duties of their respective offices at the firstregular meeting of the next academic year.

SECTION 4. Committees. The President may appoint such committees asshall be appropriate for furthering the purposes of Lambda Pi Eta.The terms of committee members shall be the same as those of theappointing officer.

SECTION 5. The President and Scholarship Officer of each chaptershall be voting Delegates to the annual national meetings of theSociety.

ARTICLE V - SOCIETY MEETINGS

SECTION 1. The annual business meeting of Lambda Pi Eta shall be.held in conjunction with the annual convention of theSpeech-Communication Association.

SECTION 2. Each chartered chapter may send two voting Delegates torepresent the chapter at the annual business meeting.

SECTION 3. A President to conduct the business meeting and aSecretary to record the minutes shall be elected at each annualmeeting.

SECTION 4. The Delegates shall elect an Executive Director, fromamong the faculty chapter advisors, for a term of three years. TheExecutive Director shall be responsible for all administrative andfinancial business of the Society.

SECTION 5. The President may establish committees and appointDelegates as members of those committees necessary for conduct ofSociety functions.

ARTICLE VI - CHAPTER MEETINGS

SECTION 1. A minimum of one regular meeting shall be held duringeach semester or term.

SECTION 2. The first regular meeting shall be held not later thanfifteen days after the beginning of the academic year. The lastregular meeting shall be held not later than twenty days prior to theend of the academic year.

SECTION 3. Special meetings may be called by the President or uponrequest of twenty percent (20%) of the active membership, with threedays notice and consent of the faculty advisor.

ARTICLE VII - CHAPTERS

SECTION 1. Affiliated chapters may be established at any college oruniversity with an academic division or department in the field ofcommunication studies upon application by ten eligible members and afaculty sponsor from the petitioning institution.

SECTION 2. Each new chapter shall submit a charter fee of $50.00 atthe time of application for recognition. '

SECTION 3. The treasurer of each chapter shall collect and transmitan initiation fee of $5.00 for each member selected for membership inthe local chapter and a list of new members by December 31 each year.

NORTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITYBETA CHAPTER

CHAPTER BY-LAWS

ARTICLE I. A majority of a quorum of active members shall determinethe election of officers. Voting may be conducted by mail, but thereshall be no voting by proxy.

ARTICLE II. Thirty percent of voting membership shall constitute aquorum of business meetings.

ARTICLE III. Dues for membership shall be determined, collected andretained by each chapter.

ARTICLE IV. Dues for membership are set at fifteen dollars ($15.00)to be paid annually by each member. .

ARTICLE V. Attendance is required by all members. Failure to attendtwo or more regular meetings will result in loss of membership. Thedismissed member may regain his/her membership by attending twomeetings and paying fifteen dollars ($15.00).

ARTICLE VI. In the event that a member’s grade point average fallsbelow that required for membership, a grace period is allowed for onesemester following the loss of academic eligibility.

The members of any chaptermay, by majority vote, confer Associate Membership status uponcommunication faculty members or guest speakers who demonstrateexceptional commitment to the goals of the Society or makeoutstanding contributions to the academic goals of the chapter.Associate Members may not vote or hold office in the chapter orthe Society.

ARTICLE IV - OFFICERS

SECTION 1. Offices. The officers of each chapter shall bePresident, Vice President, Scholarship Officer, Treasurer, andSecretarvaeporter. In addition, a faculty advisor shall beelected annually from the faculty of the sponsoring academicdepartment.

SECTICHI 2. Duties. Each officer shall have the followingresponsibilities: (1) The President shall announce all meetings,preside in the conducting of business, and actively promote thepurposes of Lambda Pi Epsilon in the university community; (2)the Vice President shall be responsible for special programs andprojects, plan the annual Lambda Pi Epsilon chapter banquet, andserve in the absence of the President; (3) the ScholarshipOfficer shall be responsible for encouraging academic excellenceand stimulating intellectual inquiry among the members throughactivities such as inviting guest speakers, informing members ofopportunities for research and involvement in professionalassociations, determining the eligibility of and recruiting newmembers, and presenting awards for outstanding contributions; (4)the Treasurer shall be responsible for collecting annual dues,collecting and transfering initiation fees and information;disbursing funds for appropriate organizational expense, andaccounting for those funds; and (5) the Secretary~Reporter shallkeep a complete set of minutes of the business of the chapter,deposit the minutes with the faculty advisor at the expiration ofthe term of office, assure adequate media coverage of theactivities of Lambda Pi Epsilon, and keep a record of mediacoverage of chapter activities.

LAMBDA PI EPSILON

SECTION 3. Terms of Office. Officers shall be elected for termsof one academic year. All officers shall be elected from and bythe active members at the last regular meeting of the academicyear and shall assume the duties of their respective offices atthe first regular meeting of the next academic year.SECTION 4. Committees. The President may appoint suchcommittees as shall be appropriate for furthering the purposes ofLambda Pi Epsilon. The terms of committee members shall be thesame as those of the appointing officer.

SECTION 5. The President and Scholarship Officer of eachchapter shall be voting Delegates to the annual national meetingsof the Society.

ARTICLE V - SOCIETY MEETINGSSECTION 1. The annual business meeting of Lambda Pi Epsilonshall be held in conjunction with the annual convention of theSpeech—Communication Association.

SECTION 2. Each chartered chapter may send two voting Delegatesto represent the chapter at the annual business meeting.SECTION 3. A President to conduct the business meeting and aSecretary to record the minutes shall be elected at each annualmeeting.

SECTION 4. The Delegates shall elect an Executive Director, fromamong the faculty chapter advisors, for a term of three years.The Executive Director shall be responsible for all administrativeand financial business of the Society.

SECTION 5. The President may establish committees and appointDelegates as members of those committees necessary for conduct ofSociety functions.

ARTICLE VI CHAPTER MEETINGSSECTION 1. A minimum of one regular meeting shall be held duringeach semester or term.

SECTION 2. The first regular meeting shall be held not laterthan fifteen days after the beginning of the academic year. Thelast regular meeting shall be held not later than twenty daysprior to the end of the academic year.

LAHBDA PI EPSILON

SECTION 3. Special meetings may be called by the President orupon request of twenty percent (20%) of the active membership,with three days notice and consent of the faculty advisor.

ARTICLE VII - CHAPTERS

SECTION 1. Affiliated chapters may be established at any collegeor university with an academic division or department in thefield of communication studies upon application by ten eligiblemembers and a faculty sponsor from the petitioning institution.

SECTION 2. Each new chapter shall submit a charter fee of $50.00at the time of application for recognition.

SECTION 3. The treasurer of each chapter shall collect andtransmit an initiation fee of $5.00 for each member selected formembership in the local chapter and a list of new members byDecember 31 of each year.

CHAPTER BYvLAWS

ARTICLE I. A majority of a quorum of active members shalldetermine the election of officers. Voting may be conducted bymail, but there shall be no voting by proxy.

ARTICLE II. Thirty percent of voting membership shall constitutea quorum of business meetings.

ARTICLE III. Dues for membership shall be determined, collected,and retained by each chapter.
