What’s Your Favorite PBS Hawaii Program? We Invite You to Share Favorites with the PBS Hawaii Community

“I don’t really have a favor-ite show but I do really enjoy watching the specials that air. You see things on PBS that you don’t see on any other chan-nels and I like that. I like feeling like I’m being informed.”

Mike MaglayaProgram DirectorUniversity of Hawaii at ManoaCollege Opportunities Program

“I wish I could say that I watch something more my age, but in reality my favorite show is Sesame Street. I used to watch it a lot when I was a kid. Every now and then I’ll sit down in the morning and watch it with my brother. It had good mes-sages when I was a kid and it has good messages now.”

Ariel MonismithFreshman University of Hawaii at Manoa

““I love learning, and there’s always something new to learn from every episode of NOVA. I’ve also always been fascinated by anything science. Nowadays, I am a filmmaker, but even when I wasn’t, I could appreciate the show’s high production value. From the gorgeous cinematog-raphy to the way every episode is written, NOVA is a well put together program, making it easy to watch.”Nick SmithCreative DirectorMakaha Studios

“My favorite show is the one Leslie Wilcox does on Tuesdays- Long Story Short. It really is a wonderful program full of great conversations with interesting islanders. Leslie always does a fabulous job. I watch to learn from her!”

TECHNOLOGY FIRSTSEarly in 2008, PBS Hawaii part-nered with Sony to become the first TV station in Hawaii with a weekly program—Long Story Short – shot, edited and broad-cast in HD technology. Other PBS Hawaii programs produced with vivid, razor-sharp HD reso-lution include Artist and the upcoming Na Mele: Traditions

in Hawaii Song shot on location at Halekulani’s House Without A Key.

Although already transmitting a digital signal on the island of Oahu, as the year ends, PBS Hawaii prepares to become one of the first public televi-sion stations in the country to fully transition from analog to

digital broadcast transmission. The statewide rollout begins on January 15th 2009.

LOCAL FILMMAKERS GET A NEW HOME...Beautiful Son, Finding San-dalwood Mountain, Fishbowl, Heart Strings, Papakolea – were among the local productions showcased in the new Thursday 8:30PM time period – where PBS Hawaii Presents is now home for the work of local filmmakers.

A PBS national audience was treated to a rare documentary experience when Independent Lens presented the broadcast premiere of Na Kamalei: The Men of Hula.

Next up – the story of a Ha-waii political icon’s journey and legacy – Patsy Mink: Ahead of the Majority. PBS Hawaii has al-ready begun work in presenting this important film to a national audience.

OUT IN THE COMMUNITYThe unprecedented PBS docu-mentary CARRIER drew great interest from Hawaii’s military and civilian communities, and it showed in the participation at two major PBS Hawaii advance screenings held at the Arizona Memorial Theatre and our PBS Hawaii studio.

Sesame Street characters and hundreds of children and parents took over Blaisdell Concert Hall in June when PBS Hawaii sponsored Sesame Street Live.

PBS celebrity chef extraor-dinaire, Martin Yan, and the Servco Home Appliance Show-room teamed up to host a special event celebrating delicious food delivered with Yan’s own brand of humor.

E Ola Pono, a PBS Hawaii production, highlights artwork and video submitted in the statewide student competition focused on what it means to live “pono”. The PBS Hawaii production also featured Keaukaha Elementary School from Hawaii island and

Waimanalo’s Blanche Pope Elementary School on Oahu where the teachings of “pono” have taken on a major role in school culture.

During the past year PBS Hawaii conducted 55 Ready-To-Learn workshops in schools, libraries and community centers statewide. R-T-L integrates TV programs and online resources with community outreach to help parents and educators.

UNMATCHED COVERAGE OF THE PRESIDENTIAL RACEThe award-winning producers, journalists and filmmakers from The NewsHour, FRONTLINE and American Experience brought relevance, balance and indepth storytelling to this year’s elec-tion coverage. PBS Hawaii live

coverage included all four debates, election night results and analysis, and gavel-to-gavel coverage of both national conventions.

JANUARY 15 - HAWAII GOES DIGITAL Will it impact you?

If you subscribe to cable or satellite services, and none of the television sets in your home is hooked up to an indoor and/or outdoor antenna – the answer is “no”. Nothing will change for you come January 15th. If you receive PBS Hawaii and other stations by using an indoor and/or outdoor antenna, this digital transition will impact you. How? When? Good questions with different answers, depending on where you live. If you have an analog television set, you will need to pur-chase a digital converter box with analog pass through, and you may also need to purchase a new antenna, as well as redirect it.

OAHUPBS Hawaii’s analog transmitter is located on Kapiolani Blvd. in Hono-lulu, and the new digital transmitter is at Palehua, north of Makakilo. After January 15th some residents of Oahu who receive our signal via an indoor and/or outdoor antenna, may have to adjust their antenna, pointing it more towards the Waianae mountain range. Some resi-dents along the Leeward Coast who could not receive our signal from the former transmitter location, may now be able to tune in a new vivid digital picture.

Our new Palehua site brings improved altitude, placing our PBS Hawaii digital transmitter 2,000 feet higher than the former analog location. Coverage testing on Oahu is in progress. This will enable us to pinpoint our new coverage footprint on Oahu, including pock-ets where our signal may be improved or more difficult to receive. Remember, you may have to redirect your antenna to point more towards the Waianae mountain range in order to receive our digital signal on Oahu after 12 Noon January 15th.

The transition from our analog to new digital transmitters is more than a technology change. PBS Hawaii and some of the other full-power stations have changed the location of their transmitters due to environmental concerns and land leases. New transmitter locations put another wrinkle in this digital transition process.

Page 7: A YEAR OF CHANGE, CHALLENGE, AND COMMUNITY · Servco Home Appliance Show-room teamed up to host a spe cial event celebrating delicious food delivered with Yan’s own brand of humor

MAUI COUNTYPBS Hawaii and other stations were informed we had to leave our Haleakala transmitter sites (10,400 feet above sea level). The new PBS Hawaii digital transmitter is located at Ulupalakua Ranch (4,600 feet above sea level). Altitude reduction could affect pockets of coverage on Maui island. Viewers who previously received our signal from the Maui transmitter may have more difficulty with this new line of sight. People on Oahu’s windward coast, as well as the north-eastern coast (Hamakua) of Hawaii island will lose the PBS Hawaii signal transmitted from Maui. Molokai and Lanai residents may have to adjust the direction of their antennas depending on whether they pick up our PBS Hawaii Oahu or Maui transmitter signal.

HAWAII Although the FCC mandate for meeting digital transmission require-ments applies only to a station’s high power transmitter signal, PBS Hawaii will offer an upgraded digital signal via translators serving the Hilo area by the end of February 2009.

KAUAI PBS Hawaii is ready to replace our analog translators with a com-pletely digital system. The transition date is not set at this time, but we will announce that conversion with plenty of notice for our PBS Hawaii viewers on Kauai. With the new location and increased altitude of our Oahu transmitter site, we expect our broadcast signal transmitted from Oahu to reach the Lihue area of Kauai after Janu-ary 15th. Viewers will need to adjust the direction of their antennas, and of course, have a pass-through converter box if they are using an analog television set.

No matter when the digital transition comes to your area, if you have an analog TV, you will need a digital converter box with analog pass through and you will need an antenna capable of picking up UHF and VHF transmissions. Please visit our website for all the infor-mation you need: www.pbshawaii.org.

After January 15th, PBS Hawaii viewers will be watching one of the first public television stations in the country broadcasting a digital only signal from its high-power transmitters. We will continue to keep you informed through the PBS Hawaii Magazine, our website, and on-air messages. Please contact us with any questions – we always appreciate hearing from you.
