Reflex Math is a computer game-based math facts program that allows students to learn their math facts through fact family pracce. The program adapts to students’ individual computer speed and math facts mastery based on a short assessment at the beginning of each log-in. The students test their facts knowledge at Crabby’s Fact Fair before they are given access to the pracce games. When the students are done being assessed, they are sent to the Fact Island where they can earn coins to unlock new games and buy items for their avatar. Each student has created an avatar to look just like him or her. In order to spend their coins each day, students must pracce enough to turn on their “green light” so that the store will open. This ensures that students are praccing long enough to master their facts before spending their reward. Reflex Math allows Ms. Roby to track a student’s math fact mastery and monitor his or her usage of the program. So far Ms. Roby’s class has solved over 150,000 math facts in eleven weeks! Reflex Math allows stu- dents to log on from any computer or an Apple device with the Reflex Math App. Students are building stamina as they master their addion and sub- tracon facts each day. Many students have even put in extra work at home before and aſter school to master these facts. Five students have obtained 100% fluency in addion and subtracon and have moved on to mulplicaon and division..

EASTERN YORK SCHOOL DISTRICT NEWSLETTER

JANUARY 2015-MARCH 2015

The Canadochly ABC Day Parade

On Monday, November 24, 2014 the hall-

ways of Canadochly became the parade

route for the Canadochly ABC Day Parade.

The students in Mr. Young’s class with the

help of their families created floats for

each letter of the alphabet. The students, paired with students

from Mrs. Bieniasz’s third grade class, marched through the

halls displaying their floats. Grand Marshal Ms. Moczulski led

the marchers. There were balloons, music and an animal wagon

(stuffed of course). The floats were on dis-

play in the cafeteria immediately follow-

ing the parade. WONDERFUL JOB MR.

YOUNG and STUDENTS!!!!!!!!

Congratulations to Canadochly’s Breana Grim.

Breana was chosen as a winner for the Office

of Attorney General’s 2015 Drug-Free Calendar

Contest. Her artwork was chosen out of more

than 1,000 entries and will be featured for the

month of June of the 2015 calendar. Breana’s

artwork was completed under the direction of

her Art teacher, Crisha Luttenberger. On

December 15, Breana, her parents and Mrs.

Luttenberger attended a luncheon in

Harrisburg to honor the contest winners.

Attorney General Kane presented the winners

with their prizes at that time.

The winners and their guests also enjoyed a

tour of the State Capital. Ms. Roby’s 2nd grade class at Canadochly was chosen to receive a

grant for the Explore Learning Reflex Math program. Reflex Math is a computer game-based math facts program that allows students to learn their math facts through fact family practice. The program adapts to students’ individual computer speed and math facts mastery based on a short assessment at the beginning of each log-in. The students test their facts knowledge at Crabby’s Fact Fair before they are given access to the practice games. When the students are done being assessed, they are sent to the Fact Island where they can earn coins to unlock new games and buy items for their avatar. Each student has created an avatar to look just like him or her. In order to spend their coins each day, students must practice enough to turn on their “green light” so that the store will open. This ensures that students are practicing long enough to master their facts before spending their reward.

Reflex Math allows Ms. Roby to track a student’s math fact mastery and monitor his or her usage of the program. So far Ms. Roby’s class has solved over 150,000 math facts in eleven weeks! Reflex Math allows stu-dents to log on from any computer or an Apple device with the Reflex Math App. Students are building stamina as they master their addition and sub-traction facts each day. Many students have even put in extra work at home before and after school to master these facts. Five students have obtained 100% fluency in addition and subtraction and have moved on to

multiplication and division..

The Canadochly Winter Concert was held on Monday, December 8. The Fifth Grade Band started the concert with Jingle Bells, Up on the

Housetop, The Little Drummer Boy and Beethoven’s Ninth. The Fourth and Fifth Grade Orchestra continued the holiday spirit with Ring Christ-

mas Bells, A French Noel and the North Pole Workshop. The Fourth and Fifth Grade Chorus shared Christmas Carol-Along, Deck the Halls, Over

the River and songs from “Frozen”. We also collected several boxes of non-perishable food items for the Holiday food baskets from those

attending. Thank you to our talented students, Ms. Fortney and Ms. Hostetter for a superb evening of music. Thank you also to everyone who

donated a non-perishable item.

Congratulations to Haley Young who practiced like crazy and qualified for PMEA District Band on French Horn!

Haley auditioned on December 6th and was selected as

one of the twelve best horn players from every

school in Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Lan-

caster, Lebanon, Perry, and York Counties. Haley will

represent Eastern York School District at the District

Band Festival on January 9-10 at Conestoga Valley High

School. She will have the opportunity to audition for

Regional Band at the festival.

GREAT news from the string department! It is a

pleasure to announce that Julia Martin (Senior) has

been selected to represent Eastern York High School at the PMEA District 7 Orchestra Festival this year. Julia

has been a member of our school orchestra for the past three years. Auditions were held December 6th,

and out of 103 violinists, Julia placed 47th. The audition process is quite vigorous. Each student

must memorize several scales, prepare a college level solo piece, and sight read a musical selection on the day of the audition. Julia has been preparing since

last school year, and her hard work and dedication can be seen in her placement score.

In December, students from Wrightsville Elementary (Grades K-5)

participated in the worldwide event known as “The Hour of Code.”

Using tutorials and other simulations, students learned how to use

code to develop simple games and apps for smartphones. The

activities required students to use logic and sequential thinking to

solve the problems assigned. Many students wanted to continue

their work even when the hour was complete. Here is a photo of

Mrs. Metzler’s 3rd grade class holding up the certificates they

received after completing the program. Who knows, the next great

game or app for your phone may come from a Wrightsville graduate!

Funding Your School District

This is the first in a series of articles that will examine how Pennsylvania public schools are funded and what that means to students, parents, taxpayers and school district staff.

What is Fair Funding for Pennsylvania Public Schools?

That is the question two groups are trying to answer as Pennsylvania public schools struggle to balance budgets using inadequate state funding.

Eastern York School District receives 34% of its funding from the state. Local taxpayers provide the majority of the District’s funding (62%) in the form of real estate and other local taxes. The remaining 4% of its funding comes from Federal and other sources.

A 34% funding level ranks Pennsylvania 43rd out of 50 states in the amount of K-12 education costs covered by state funds. Part of the reason for the low funding level is that Pennsylvania is one of only three states that do not have a consistent funding formula for distributing money to public schools.

Two groups have been established to examine Pennsylvania’s existing funding method and make recommendations for a fair, reliable and predictable funding formula.

The Basic Education Funding Commission was established in June 2014 by the State. It consists of 12 lawmakers and three state officials. They have been meeting with public school officials throughout the state to analyze existing funding issues and develop recommendations for a new formula for distributing state money to public schools. Their recommendations are expected in June 2015.

The Campaign for Fair Education Funding is a coalition of 40 organizations that have joined forces to increase public awareness about education funding. Their goal is to increase overall education funding and make recommendations for a funding formula that is predictable and fair to all school districts. Eleven “circuit riders”, consisting of mostly retired school superintendents, will hold public meetings throughout the state to inform the public and generate a grassroots effort by concerned citizens to place pressure on their legislators to find a solution to the state’s inadequate funding of K-12 schools.

What can you do to help? Get involved. Contact your state representatives and demand the state properly fund public education. Attend local town-hall style meetings concerning education funding. Stay informed by reading future editions of this newsletter and attending your school district’s budget meetings. Spread the word by sharing this information with your neighbors. This is an issue that not only affects stu-dents, parents, and, taxpayers; today’s students are tomorrow’s leaders and their education will impact us all.

Future articles will address how funding is presently handled and why it doesn’t work; how charter schools affect funding; why there is a reliance on real estate taxes to fund schools; why six school districts are suing the state over inadequate funding.
