WORD AND GRAMMAR: lexemes, word forms and grammatical words
In chapter 1 this book introduced the idea that some complex words have meaning that are so predictable that they do not have to be listed in dictionary.
![Page 3: A word and its forms inflection](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022061401/558647e1d8b42a962c8b52f7/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
But , in this chapter we will focus on variety; words that do not have to be listed , because they are marely grammatically and which itself may or may not be listed.Depending on wheater its meaning is predictable or not.
Example: This pianist performs in the local hall every week. Mary told us that pianist performed in the local hall every week. The performance last week was particularly impressive.

REGULAR AND IRREGULAR INFLECTION
There are words that have to be listed in dictionary and words that
do not
Example : Performs, performed - perform Pianists - pianist
![Page 5: A word and its forms inflection](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022061401/558647e1d8b42a962c8b52f7/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
There are two reason why a word from such as pianists does not have to be listed:
In English is a noun that can be counted, it will have a plural form. Unless otherwise specified , that the plural form of any countable noun will be formed by adding suffix-s to the singular form.

“Unless otherwise specified”
Unless otherwise specified is a noun in plural form without adding “s” or suffix-s
Example: Child - Children Tooth - teeth Woman - Women Man - Men, etc

FORMS OF NOUN
Most countable noun in English have two word forms :
Singular and Plural
Inflectionally for any noun lexeme X, there are two grammatical words:
Singular of X
Plural of X

There are also countable nouns that express their plural with no
suffix at all.

The singular and plural distinction is the only
grammatical distinction that is expressed morphology in
English noun.
