Toledo Bend LakeToledo Bend Lake islocated in Louisiana and Texason the Sabine River and formsa portion of the boundarybetween the two states. TheReservoir is 65 miles in lengthand covers an area of 186,000acres with 1,200 miles ofshoreline. It is the largestman-made body of water in theSouth and the fifth largest insurface acres in the UnitedStates. It offers unlimitedopportunity for fishing andrecreation activities.
Many marinas offer fishingpiers and launching ramps for their guests.Public launching ramps are available at thefollowing north to south locations on ToledoBend:

Although fishing is by far the mostpopular past-time on Toledo Bend, the lakealso offers water sports areas for jet skiing,water-skiing, wake boarding and tubing.Canoeing opportunities are available in quietprotected coves. Paddle boats are a pleasurefor the young and more mature at heart.A number of public beaches, numerousRV and primitive camping sites, ATV trails,hiking trails and birding opportunities areavailable.
Lots of Big FishWhile bass fishing is the most popular on Toledo Bend, other species such
as crappie, bream, white bass, stripers and catfish are in abundance.The current bass lake record is 15.33 lbs. The 2006-2007 fishing seasonproduced a record catch of 50 Lunker Bass over 10 lbs each. The officialweigh-in site is Toledo Town & Tackle, located at Hwy 6 West. If you agree torelease your lunker, the Toledo Bend Lake Association will award you a replica.

North ToledoNorth Toledo Bend State Park includes
over 900-acres of pine woodland, withabundant waterfront accommodationsand activities.
The park has 63 campsites with waterand electrical hookups, plus ten rentalcabins with fireplaces. A large group
camphouse is also available – with fivedormitories, a large bathhouse and amain kitchen/dining area.
The park includes a large boat launch,parking lot, picnic pavilions, playgroundand a fish cleaning station.
The Visitor Center complex includesan Olympic-size swimming pool andbathhouse, along with a laundry andconcession area.

South ToledoSouth Toledo Bend State Park is located
on several small bluffs that extend over andinto Toledo Bend Reservoir next to ToledoBend Dam on Hwy 191. It offers scenicwaterfront views from many vantage points.Visitors to the park can enjoy recreationalactivities such as hiking, cycling, birding
and camping.The site offers 19vacation cabins,55 RV campsitesand 5 tent sites.This area is acommon nestingground for thebald eagle. Oneof the specialfeatures of thispark is theVisitors Centerwith interpretativeareas andprograms for children. The protectedbeach area and the covered fishing bridgeare a real favorite.
Hodges GardensHodges Gardens State Park is located
approximately 15 miles south of Many onUS Highway 171. The Park was originallydesigned and opened to the public in 1956by oil and gas businessman A.J. HodgesSr. Hodges Gardens State Park, donated
to the State in 2007 by the HodgesFoundation, boasts over 700 acres ofnative and cultivated flora, including tworose gardens and a large collection ofJapanese Red Maple trees. Nature-oriented visitors will experience a widerange of topography. Waterfalls andpools are featured through-out the gardens.Cabins on the 225-acre lake and RV padsare available.

ATV’s, Biking, BirdingThe Toledo Bend Forest Scenic Byway (Hwy 191) travels the length ofToledo Bend Reservoir and displays 76 miles of rolling hills lined withstately pine. Highway 171 and Hwy 6, plus other arms of the Byway,
offer links to thearea towns, sightsand attractions.Thirty-plus marinasand otheraccommodationsoffer the visitor awide variety ofopportunities to
enjoy the numerous activities available on or off the water. Beaches,state parks, historical sites, a 700-acre garden, luxury golf courses,a 26-mile bike trail, interpretive signage areas, observation towers atthe Dam, and excellent opportunities for birding, including habitat forBald Eagles, are accessible along the Byway.

Fort SitesFt. Jesup is located six miles east of Many.The site was selected by Zachary Taylor in 1822.It existed for 26 years as one of the strongestgarrisons in Louisiana. The fort was once a largecomplex of 82 structures. This site features theoriginal kitchen/mess building, officers’ quarters,a gift shop and interpretive exhibits. Facilitiesalso include a museum and picnic area.
Ft. St. Jean Baptiste is located on thebanks of the Cane River in Natchitoches. Theoriginal Fort was built in 1716 to prevent Spanishforces in the province of Texas from advancingacross the border of French Louisiana.
Los Adaes is located east of Robeline inNatchitoches Parish. Los Adaes dates back tothe early 1700s when a Franciscan missionaryfrom New Spain urged the French governor of
Louisiana to establish apost near east Texas. In1729, Spain designatedLos Adaes the capital ofthe province of Texas.
St. John the BaptistCatholic Church
The first resident priestselected the highest spotin Many as the buildingsite of St. John the BaptistCatholic Church in 1871.The original Churchburned in 1922, wasrebuilt and laterremodeled, retainingthe original Spanisharchitecture.

El Camino Real
Designated as a National HistoricTrail in 2004, El Camino Real de losTejas (Hwy 6 in Louisiana and Hwy21 in Texas) has existed for morethan 300 years. El Camino Realhas its easternmost beginning inNatchitoches, Louisiana and runsfrom piney woods through rollinghills to the arid lands of Old Mexico.The Spaniards and the French thatmarked the trail were followed bysuch men as Moses Austin and hisson Stephen Fuller Austin (TheFather of Texas), Jim Bowie, DavyCrockett, Sam Houston and earlymissionaries of multiple faiths. Anabundance of historic sites await themodern day traveler of El CaminoReal that include Ft. Jesup, LosAdaes, and Ft. St. Jean Baptiste.

Caroline Dorman Nature Reserve, known as Briarwood,is a tribute to Caroline Dorman’spioneering work as the first womanemployed in forestry in the UnitedStates. ZwolleZwolle, Louisiana, population about 1,800, has
a unique and colorful heritage.The early influence of Native Americans as well
as African-American, French and Spanish settlersis reflected in the local culture.
Located on U.S. Highway 171 near the centerof Sabine Parish, Zwolle (pronounced Zwa’-lee)is a small town that hosts three big Louisianafestivals each year. The Choctaw Apache IndianPow-wow is held the first week in May. The ZwolleTamale Fiesta is held the second weekend inOctober and the Zwolle Loggers and ForestryFestival is held the second weekend in May.
Zwolle’s proximity to Toledo Bend Lake makesit an ideal stop for fisherman and water sportsenthusiasts. Abundant woods and forests nearbymake it equally attractive to hunters.

FisherThe picturesque
sawmill Village ofFisher still reflectsthe nostalgic past ofa by-gone era andgives visitors thefeeling of stepping back in time. Built in1889 by Louisiana Longleaf LumberCompany, the Company owned the entireVillage. The Company buildings that survivetoday are some of the finest examples to befound of the lumber industries ownhandiwork. The Village is on the NationalRegister of Historic Places.
Located 6 miles south of Many, Louisianaon US Highway 171.
FlorienFlorien is a small town about ten
miles south of Many. Three popularattractions are the Corley Log Cabin,the Dover House, and the Tree Chair.
The Corley cabin is a two-story housebuilt of hand hewn long leaf pine logs.The house was built in 1859 and isbelieved to be the oldest residentialstructure in the area.
Dover House was built soon afterWorld War I and indicates the area’srich timber history. The Tree Chair isone of Florien’s most unique landmarks– a metal porch chair that was left leaningagainst a small oak tree and has become,over time, engulfed by the tree.

Pleasant HillPleasant Hill is well known to
Civil War buffs due to its prominencein the war. It was the site of the lastConfederate victory. Each April, are-enactment of the Battle of PleasantHill is staged, with thousands of visitorsflocking to the site to relive a piece ofLouisiana history.
ConverseConverse is the northern most town
of Sabine Parish. The oil boom in the1920’s made Converse, a railroad town,the trading and shopping center of the
area. The 1920’s oil bust, closely followedby the Depression took its toll, however.
Today, the Converse community spirithas prevailed and visitors find it a smalltown with big heart.
EbarbVisitors to Ebarb will notice the
multicultural flavor that has thrivedin the town since being settled by theFrench and Spanish. The combinationof European and Indian ancestry makesEbarb rich in culture, history and folklore.The Choctaw-Apache Tribe of Ebarb is thesecond largest in the state.
