Welcome to Kingsdale Foundation School

‘The range of subjects taught is imaginative, well constructed and contributes well to students’ achievement and their outstanding spiritual, cultural and moral development.’ Ofsted

Kingsdale is one of the most popular schools in the country and provides exceptionally rich opportunities to challenge students of all abilities including options in Year 9 to study Triple Science, Latin, Economics and Psychology and the opportunity to study two languages from Year 7. Kingsdale attracts many able students. We operate a condensed or accelerated Key Stage 3 programme of study to meet the particular needs and aspirations of all of the students and their families. The school offers a wide variety of academic subjects including 4 or 5 optional courses selected by each child in addition to enrichment activities every day.

Average class sizes are approximately 20 across all subjects. We have one of the best pupil to teacher ratios of any secondary school in London.

Students have access to iPads, PCs, Apple Macs, laptops, wireless technology and a Virtual Learning Environment and we introduced one to one mobile technology across the school from September 2015 i.e. students will benefit from having the opportunity to use a personal iPad safely for educational purposes, as appropriate, in school and at home!

All students at Kingsdale are encouraged to participate in our ‘Trips of a Lifetime‘ programme. Subsidised excursions to amazing destinations such as Japan, Namibia, Brazil, the USA and the French Alps are organised every year.

“The strong commitment to equality of opportunity by school leaders ensures that no group is overlooked and the school ensures that all make similar progress in their learning. Discrimination in any form is not tolerated and this is evident in the courtesy and respect that both staff and students demonstrate for each other.” Ofsted

Sixth Form ProvisionOur exciting and specialist post 16 provision caters for 200 students. Courses on offer include the Baccalaureate, A Levels and an access to medicine scheme. Scholarships are available for students who display particular aptitude in mathematics or performing and expressive arts. FrenchThe languages team teaches French to all year 7s who have chosen the language as an option.

We are supported by beginning teachers, and use a variety of teaching strategies to help learners acquire French in an environment where the target language is used as much as possible. The department is very well resourced.

We use Expo as our main course book and supplement it with a variety of other resources: all our classes are equipped with dictionaries, electronic whiteboards and now apple TVs, which enable us to teach interactive lessons with Expo electro, Boardworks and other online resources.

All of this is complemented by a yearly educational trip. Lessons are fun and encouraging learners to speak French is one of our main priorities.

Homework is particularly important if what has been practised in class is to be remembered over a longer period of time. Learning homework is set every lesson, a written task every other lesson. Homework should involve research and learners are encouraged to extend what has been practised and find new expressions to use independently.

A vocabulary list is available for each module to help with homework. Learners are given a booklet of exercises which acts as their own textbook and workbook. They can then use this as a homework pack or as revision pack be-fore main assessments. Learners who experience problems

with their homework are encouraged to go and work with Mr Hood or their respective French teacher, at lunchtime.

The course is based on six modules, each one lasting about half a term, songs are incorporated in the modules to help develop memory skills.

There is an end of module test, which shows how learners are progressing, a mark is given, as a percentage, and a level. French is a new subject for the majority but they are expected to be able to write a few sentences on prepared topics and reach level 2/3 by the end of the first term, 3/4 by the end of the year. A few may start to operate at level 5.

Learners will be given the opportunity to develop their cultural awareness by attending day trips to Lille in the north of France.

LatinLatin is taught in an option block for one lesson per week.

The department is very well resourced. We use the Cambridge Latin Course as our main course book and have class sets of dictionaries available for later on, when original texts will be tackled. Books 1 and 2 are covered over the course of year 7 and 8 and copies of books 2, 3 and 4 are available in the school library for pupils who choose to study at Latin at GCSE level.

The CLC provides an exciting, stimulating approach to Latin. Book one is based around Caecilius and his family who lived in Pompeii in the first centaury AD. The book combines Latin and Roman civilisation through Latin stories, background information and original sources.

Homework is particularly important if what has been practised in class is to be remembered over a longer period of time. Either a learning homework or a written task is set every lesson. Homework should involve research and learners are encouraged to extend their own knowledge of the Roman world.

A glossary is available to help pupils with their written homeworks and a vocabulary list for stages 1-12 will be provided at the start of year 7. The Cambridge Latin Course web-site has an enormous variety of resources available to pupils including Latin stories from the textbook which can be viewed interactively as well as games and vocabulary testers. We encourage all pupils to use this site on a regular basis. Learners, who experience problems with their homework are encouraged to go and work with Miss Evans or their respective Latin teacher, at lunchtime.

We use a variety of teaching strategies and introduce students to a wide range of texts from the key works in the English literary canon – Shakespeare and Dickens – to contemporary texts, world literature and nonfiction texts which include media.

iPads for Learning

Kingsdale is introducing a new student iPad programme to enhance teaching and learning. Kingsdale believes that by harnessing the best mobile technology we open up a wealth of opportunities to improve our students’ learning experience, whilst better preparing them for a future in the modern world.

Our programme will mean that every student has access to the tools and resources that they need to learn by embeddingtechnology into the curriculum in a way that has not beenpossible up until now. Furthermore, students will learn toexplore and produce work in new and engaging ways, embracing creativity and innovation, not just in school butwhenever and wherever they are.

We want to empower students to take control of their learning and to work in a more individual and personalised way. Our teachers will be providing personalised learning experiences for every student that will support and challenge them to perform to the very best of their ability.

We also want to encourage students to work together and have invested in a range of technologies to support the collaborative use of iPads both at school and at home.

How will this programme support students’ learning? Independent academic research undertaken by the University of Hull has shown thatin school where iPads are deployed:

• Parents say that greater motivation, interest and engagement of their child with learning have been the single largest benefit.

• The overwhelming majority of parents believe that students should be allowed to use mobile technologies in their school before they reach the secondary stage and reported that theirchildren gained significant positive dispositions towards learning as a result of access to aniPad.

• The use of iPads has enabled many more students to express their creativity, to engage in peerassessment and in group critiques.

• Parents also appear to become more engaged with the school and their child’s learning when aniPad travels home with the student.

• Personal ‘ownership’ of the device is seen as the single most important factor for successful use of this technology.

Title

Research literature A page within our new website will contain a summary of the key pieces of information we have shared or need to share with our parents. We intend to use this page along with parent text, email and letters to inform our stakeholders of any meetings, events or further helpful information that relates to the project.

Case studies on the use of iPads within the school environment including those conducted by the University of Hull, Institute of Education and NAACE (National Association of Advisors for Computers in Education) are also available via this site.

Is this programme voluntary?Yes. It is entirely your choice whether or not to enter into the Kingsdale Student iPad programme.

Why iPads?Currently, we believeiPads are the best tablet on the market to support children’s educational development and learning. The hardware is robust and reliable with full day battery life and high resolution cameras front & back but it is Apple’s educational ecosystem that makes iPads our tablet of choice. We consider the framework that Apple and its educational partners offer to be the most advanced available. For example,iBooks Author and iTunes U offer a readymade solution for schools to publish and distribute interactive digital textbooks.

The App Store means that only certified Apps can be installed, giving a high degree of confidence in the Apps to which students have access.

What is the student iPad programme? This is a programme where every pupil has access to his or her own iPad; for their own benefit, available for use both at school and at home. Kingsdale subsidises and makes no profit from this arrangement and passes on allbenefits to families. We understand that these costs are not easily affordable for all and this is why we have provided options that include monthly contributions by direct debit and have set up a school-based equality of access fund.We will continue to examine and review alternative payment schemes.

How will we make sure teaching staff get the most from using iPads? All of our teachers are now engaged in an extensive training programme to ensure they are appropriately skilled to both use and teach with iPads. In addition to this we are developing a three-year training programme for all stakeholders that should enable the programme to be a resounding success.

How many hours per day might a pupil be using a school relatediPad?We will not be judging the success of the programme based on student screen time,

but rather learning outcomes. It is expected iPads will be used in the minority of lessons. Some of the options will involve using the video camera (controlled by the teacher)or working collaboratively with other students. The use of the device will depend upon the student, the teacher, the class, the topic being studied and how best both the teacher and student determine the implementation of programmes of study. There is a facility for parents and teachers to monitor and limit iPad functionality.

Can the iPad be used at home?Yes. Using an iPad both in and out of school facilitates longer term projects, challenge-based approaches and the ability to learn anytime, anywhere; this has the potential to transform our approach to home learning for the better. The iPad will connect to the school Wi-Fi network as well as those available at home or elsewhere.

Even without Wi-Fi access the device can still be used to great effect.

What if my child already has an iPad?We will allow students to use their own iPad but it must match the school specification as detailed in the following BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) section of this guidance.

BYOD (Bring Your Own Device)The iPad will be required to be enrolled into the school management system for security purposes

and to enable us to provide the Apps and content received by other students. The iPad will need to be wiped of all existing Apps and content and reconfigured. Unfortunately, it is not possible for a BYODiPadto be covered by our special extended warranty and insurance cover.

What investments have been made in IT infrastructure?Approximately 2 years ago the School’s IT infrastructure was due to be upgraded when we began this journey. At little additional cost, we made preparations for a potential mobile learning programme, such as the iPad programme.

We have reviewed the suitability of our network services to support 1-1 mobile learning. As a result we have upgraded and expanded Wi-Fi coverage further, improved internet connectivity to make sure that we are ready, should the need arise, to support significant numbers of wireless devices. We have also invested in a Mobile Device Management system to improve security and to ensure the School can manage effectively these new devices.

Computing Drives innovation in the sciences, in engineering, business, entertainment and education. It touches every aspect of our lives, from the cars we drive to the movies we watch and the way in which businesses and governments communicate with and hear from us.

Changing TechnologyAn understanding of Computer Science is essential if you want to keep up with changing technology and take advantage of the opportunities it offers in your life- whether it’s as a career or a way of problem solving, or as a way of providing you with a greater appreciation of the way things work.

Computing is a relatively modern area of study, but its roots go back to ancient times.

While it is almost impossible to accurately predict what technological developments will happen next, there are underlying Computer Science concepts and principles that lead to future developments. These can be recognized and applied by people who work in computing.

Computational ThinkingComputational Thinking is one of these processes and it underpins all the learning in our KS3 course. This will provide you with an approach to problem solving that you will be able to use in relation to a wide range of computer related situations non-computer related situations.

Throughout the course, we will look at the processes that led to the development of major ideas and systems. This will give you a much better understanding of how computing has come to be as it is today.

In Year 7:• Year 7 focuses on the understanding of what

is going on inside the computer: How does a computer store data? How does a computer produce images? How do computers receive instructions from humans? At the end of the year, the students will be introduced to basic programming in text-based language Python.

• • Students will also be taught an understanding of how people use computers, and how computer science can be used to improve peoples’ experiences of technology

In Year 8:• We will build on the concepts started in Year 7,

and deepen understanding of computational thinking.

• We will learn more about text-based programming language Python, and write more complex programs. We will also continue to learn about how IT is used, and carry out more practical projects.

Although no longer deemed a core subject at KS2, Science is still compulsory at secondary school up to and including GCSE. In line with this “Teachers should ensure that the knowledge, skills and understanding of how science works are integrated into the teaching of the breadth of study.”

In years 7 and 8 Students will look at different topics termly covering Biology, Chemistry and Physics during those lessons. Students are regularly assessed for different skills including practical, knowledge and analytical skills.

During Key Stage 4 students will continue Biology, Chemsitry and Physics as more discrete subjects. Based on their performance students will be encourages to follow Triple, Double or Single Science pathways.

Outside of classScience also runs two clubs – Science and STEM. Science club looks to bring in aspects of everyday life and analyse them in a fun scientific way. STEM club is run conjunction with other departments to build students understanding of the developmental aspects of science.

We also regularly run visits to places of interests, fieldtrips, competitions and lectures.

One of the most fun times is during Chick/Duck fortnight. During the fortnight the departments brings in live eggs and encourage students to learn about the development of life. Students watch the eggs hatch through to the chicks/ducklings becoming functioning young organisms.

HistoryOur aim is to provide academic and life lessons, where independent learning, progress and understanding are key.

The History department at Kingsdale Foundation School aims for pupils to acquire and develop:

• an overview of the past;• an independent, analytical and enquiring mind• a grasp of historical interpretation.

We hope pupils will gain:

• a deeper understanding of contemporary society;• respect for social, cultural, ethnic and religious

diversity;• skills to actively participate in our complex and

plural society.

There are five full time history specialists and a number of other humanities teachers within the history department. We are housed in the Humanities area of the school, with classrooms surrounding the Humanities office. The department is well resourced and we are continually looking to improve and to invest further.

At Key Stage 3 pupils in Year 7 and 8 receive two lessons of History a week. GCSE courses start in year 9, and throughout year 9, 10 and 11 pupils receive two lessons of history a week To understand where we are today you must first understand how we got here. The study of history is alive and relevant and touches every aspect of

our society and identity. We at Kingsdale teach a wide and varied curriculum and through that curriculum we teach our students to become independent learners, to question and analyse. Pupils develop into critical thinkers and these skills can be transferred into all aspects later life.

GeograpghyGeography at Kingsdale will raise the aspirations of all students through quality, excellence and innovation.

Geography is the subject that provides students with the skills required for the 21st Century. It provides opportunities to understand and make sense of the world and the people in it. The world in which we live is likely to see more changes in the next 50 years than it has ever done before and Geography explains why this is and helps to prepare you for these changes. At Kingsdale Foundation School we explore social, economic and environmental issues that are relevant at the local and global scale and enable young people to develop as Global Citizens.

Through their study of Geography at Kingsdale, we want pupils to become:

• Knowledgeable• Inquisitive• Well-rounded

There are six full time and two part-time geography specialists within the geography department. We are housed in the Humanities area of the school, with classrooms surrounding the Humanities office. The department is well resourced and we are continually looking to improve and to invest further.
