behind runners to deliver his challenge, and he quickened clear in taking fashion to take out the $200,000 feature.

"It's all a bit of a blur at the moment for me," Beadman, who replaced John O’Shea as head Godolphin trainer last weekend, said.

The five-year-old, who also provided his sire Holy Roman Emperor (Danehill) with his 64th individual stakes winner, had

finished a close second first up over 1400 metres at Randwick on 15 April before running down the field at Hawkesbury, and Beadman was pleased to see him return to form.

“His first up run was a cracker. We have tinkered with a little bit of gear with him but the key to him is to switch him off,” he said.

“If you get the first half mile of the race right, the rest will work out."I thought he had a realistic chance. The ground was a bit firm for him

at Hawkesbury the other day. He drew off the track and he just never got into his right rhythm.

"But today, Mick Dee gave him a beautiful ride."Winning jockey Dee, who was riding at Scone for the first time, was

booked to ride at the light weight of 53 kilograms and said the race went according to plan.

"He (Beadman) told me exactly about the horse and what I should be doing and everything just worked out beautifully," Dee said.

"I can't thank the team at Godolphin enough. I got the late call-up because of the light weight, and I'm just very happy to pull it off for the team."

A €21,000 Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale by Johnny Murtagh, Duca Valentinois (5 g Holy Roman Emperor - Love Valentine by Fruits Of Love) was then purchased for £190,000 by John Ferguson at the 2015 Goffs London Sale and he has now won five and placed in six of his 24 career starts for total prize money earnings of $300,253.

One of three named foals out of the winning mare Love Valentine (Fruits Of Love), who is herself a half-sister to the Group Two-placed Salsa Brava (Almutawakel), the gelding is a half-brother to one winner.

His second dam, the unplaced Ridotto (Salse), has produced eight winners from 11 foals to race, while his winning third dam Carnival Appeal (Valid Appeal) is a sister to the stakes winning and Group Three-producing mare Valid Carnauba.

His fourth dam Carnauba (Noholme) won the Oaks d’Italia (Gr 1, 2200m), while this is also the same family as dual Group Two-winning and Group One-placed Shaanxi (Zilzal), Group Three winner Ouqba (Red Ransom) and former champion stayer in Hong Kong Housemaster (Rudimentary).

Duca Valentinois is the latest of 64 stakes winners for Aquis Farm shuttle stallion Holy Roman Emperor, who will return to Australia for the seventh time in the spring with his fee set at $9,900 (inc GST).

64 For Holy Roman EmperorThe Darren Beadman-trained Duca Valentinois (5 g ex Love Valentine by Fruits of Love) ran out a comfortable winner of the Scone Cup (Listed, 1600m) yesterday and in the process provided Aquis Farm shuttler Holy Roman Emperor (Danehill) with this 64th stakes winner. The five-year-old Irish import, who was most recently seen running tenth in the Hawkesbury Gold Cup (Gr 3, 1600m) on 29 April, beat God’s In Him (God’s Own) by a length and a half with just a neck back to Pajaro (Align) in third. Holy Roman Emperor stands at Coolmore in Ireland for a fee of €17,500 and will stand at Aquis Farm this season for an unchanged fee of $9,900 (inc GST).

Three For Excelebration Coolmore’s former shuttler Excelebration (Exceed And Excel) sired his his third Australian-bred winner when the Kris Lees-trained Excelamour (2 f ex Explosive Love by Rubiton) won the Inglis Two-Year-Old Challenge (1100m) at Scone yesterday. The filly, who had finished second in her first two starts at Newcastle and Muswellbrook, beat Born In Barcelona (I Am Invincible) by three quarters of a length. Excelebration shuttled to Coolmore Australia for four seasons and has sired two stakes winners to date. His first Australian-bred crop are headed by his stakes winning-son Saint Patricks Day, while his northern hemisphere crop is headed by Group Three winner Barney Roy, who ran second in last weekend’s 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) at Newmarket.

Morning Brief

Waging War Ready For Derby ChallengeCo-trainer Leon Macdonald is confident that Waging War (Rebel Raider) can follow up his victory in the Chairman’s Stakes (Gr 3, 2030m) at Morphettville on 29 April when he takes his chance in today’s South Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2500m). The three-year-old gelding, who is unbeaten in his three most recent starts, will race from barrier 12 with Clare Lindop booked to take the ride. "Waging War has come a long way. He won his maiden at Balaklava in November and he's won three races since,” said Macdonald. "This is another step but I don't think he'll have any trouble with the 2500 metres."

McCarthy Happy With DrawTrainer Daniel McCarthy believes that Ashlor (Hard Spun) can run well in today’s Benchmark 90 Handicap (1200m) at Morphettville, with the trainer believing his chance in last week’s Euclase Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) was effectively ended after he drew barrier 11. Ashlor, who is drawn in barrier three today, won over 1200 metres at Caulfield the start prior to his fifth place run in the Euclase Stakes. "He could easily have won every run this preparation if he'd have some luck but he's continually drawn bad gates and he continually has bad runs,” McCarthy told Racing.com. “Drawing barrier three is fantastic because he leaves the barriers so well and he'll put himself in a really nice place, probably third or fourth, and get a lovely run through the race." Click here to see the Morphettville fields.

Hulbert Pair In Good ShapeCo-trainers Peter and Will Hulbert believe they have got a strong chance to land today’s BRC Champagne Classic (Gr 2, 1200m) at Doomben, where they saddle last start Eagle

Farm winner Showashadow (Dane Shadow) and debut Doomben winner Cooroi Chase (Show A Heart). Peter Hulbert has said he is very happy with both fillies and expects them to run well. "We are only a small stable and to have two runners in the one Group Two race is a bit of an achievement," Peter Hulbert said. "They are both lovely fillies who will be better over longer trips. But I expect them to be finishing their races off well. Both were bred by their owners so it is also good to take on the big stables who spend a fortune on their young horses."

Start Wondering In Prime ConditionCo-trainers Evan and J.J. Rayner are pleased with the condition of New Zealand Group One winner Start Wondering (Eighth Wonder) ahead of his tilt in today’s Doomben 10,000 (Gr 1, 1200m). The six-year-old gelding was most recently seen running second to Kawi (Savabeel) in the Haunui Farm Classic (Gr 1, 1600m) at Otaki in February, having taken out the NRM Sprint (Gr 1, 1400m) on his previous start. "He's done very well since he's been here,"

Rayner said. "He has worked well and settled in. I couldn't be happier with him. Whether he's up to the Aussie sprinters we'll find out on Saturday. I think I've got him ready to go." A run in the Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m) at Eagle Farm on 10 June could be the next for the gelding, provided he runs well today.

Fell Swoop Looking For Group One VictoryThe Matthew Dale-trained Fell Swoop (Not A Single Doubt) will look to secure an elusive Group One victory when he runs in today’s Doomben 10,000. The five-year-old has been placed at the highest level on five occasions, including on his most recent start when he ran third behind Chautauqua (Encosta De Lago) in the T J Smith Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Randwick on 1 April. "They have switched things about this year and at this stage of his preparation the 1200 metres suits him best," said Dale. "He had a trial at Goulburn two weeks ago, it was more of a maintenance trial than anything else. It was to just keep him ticking over. He is ready to run a good race on Saturday."

Cahill Hopes For A Big Run From MorendiJockey Michael Cahill expects a big showing from Morendi (Onemorenomore) when he lines up in today’s Chairman’s Handicap (Gr 3, 2000m) at Doomben. The Darren Graham-trained four-year-old will be looking to secure a hat-trick of wins having won his two previous starts at Doomben and most recently when he came from last to first to win over 1850 metres at Eagle Farm. "At one stage he was last and I was hard at him but he picked up and he mowed them down in the straight," Cahill said. "He won his first open company race at his only start at Doomben, two runs back and handled the track.”

Change Of Routine For CounterattackTrainer Chris Waller is hoping that a change in Counterattack’s (Redoute’s Choice) training routine will help him secure his first Group One win in today’s Doomben 10,000. Waller has said he has been incorporating dressage into the Group Three winner’s training in the build up towards the Group One. "I've done a bit of dressage work with him just to change things around and it seems to have worked," Waller said. "Counterattack hasn't won a Group One. Hopefully he'll get his chance in the next three races." Counterattack will likely be aimed at the Kingsford-Smith Cup (Gr 1, 1300m) at Eagle Farm on 27 May and then the Stradbroke Handicap on 10 June next up. Click here to see the Doomben fields.

Innocent Looking For Back-To-Back WinsTrainer Kris Lees is confident that Clearly Innocent (Not A Single Doubt) can defend his Luskin Star Stakes (Listed, 1300m) crown at Scone today. The five-year-old gelding has a good record at the New South Wales track, winning all five of his starts at the course and he was last seen running ninth in the Gold Rush Handicap (1100m) at Hawkesbury. “He has come on well since Hawkesbury, and obviously his Scone form is impeccable,” Lees said. “I’m looking forward to taking him back to the races on Saturday.” Click here to see the Scone fields.

Mongolian Wolf Stays At HomeMongolian Wolf (Pluck) will not run in today’s Rough Habit Plate (Gr 3, 2000m) at Doomben and will instead line up in the Noel Rundle Handicap (2000m) at Caulfield after trainer Darren Weir could not get the gelding or his stablemate Neverland (Big Brown) on a flight to Queensland. Mongolian Wolf won the Frank Packer Plate (Gr 3, 2000m) in his first start for the Weir stable. "Plan A was for them to go to Queensland but obviously there's a few issues at the moment with flying so Plan B comes into place," said Weir's Warrnambool stable foreman Jarrod McLean. “Obviously Mongolian Wolf’s grand final this prep is the Queensland Derby but he looks a class horse in tomorrow's race at Caulfield.”

Charlton On Trial For QueenslandTrainer Robbie Griffiths will wait and see how Charlton (Redoute’s Choice) runs in the Noel Rundle Handicap today before making the decision whether he takes the colt to Queensland. A last-start winner of a 2200 metre Pakenham maiden, Charlton was number 32 in the order of entry into the South Australian Derby and Griffiths thinks the longer distance will bring out the best in Charlton. "I was disappointed he didn't get in

the Derby," Griffiths said. "I think he's a quality horse that we haven't seen the best of yet and I think we only scratched the surface last start. When we didn't get a run in Adelaide the back-up plan was to see how he handles himself with racing and if he holds up alright we will look at going to Brisbane.”

Grey Street To Caulfield Trainer John McArdle hopes he made the right decision running Grey Street (Street Boss) in Catanach Jewellers Handicap (1200m) at Caulfield rather than aiming her a stakes race in Adelaide this weekend. McArdle's first thought after Grey Street won over 1100 metres at Caulfield two weeks ago was to head to Adelaide on Saturday week while part-owner Terry Martin preferred the Caulfield option. "We decided to have a look and see how the nominations came up for this race," McArdle said. "It's a $100,000 race at probably her favourite track and that's part of the reason we're staying here this weekend. It's a little bit of an awkward barrier (11) but if she gets the right run I'm sure she'll be her usual competitive self."

Peaky Blinders Makes Australian DebutPeaky Blinders (Sir Percy), who will now race as Our Peaky Blinders, will make his Australian debut in Recycal Handicap (1400m) at Caulfield for co-trainers Trent and Natalie Busuttin. Formerly been trained in New Zealand for Kylie Fawcett, the four-year-old gelding has won two of her six starts, and was most recently seen winning over 1400 metres at Ellerslie on 4 March. “He’s a horse who has been bought by clients, headed by Seymour Bloodstock and a good syndicate,” Busuttin told www.theinformant.co.nz. “He looks to be a handy, progressive horse from New Zealand. He certainly can gallop. He’s a nice horse. He’ll be a nice horse to have in the stable going forward.”

Stakes Targets In Mind For Easy BeastTrainer Richard Laming will be hoping Easy Beast (Super Easy) can break his maiden in the Chef’s Hat Plate (1100m) at Caulfield and in the process earn himself a trip to Queensland. The two-year-old has raced twice in his career, finishing third

over 1100 metres at Caulfield, before running second over 1000 metres at Bendigo in his last start and if he runs well today he could be aimed at the BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at Eagle Farm on 27 May. “The reason why I'm going to run him on Saturday is that he has really come on since his last run," Laming said. “He's absolutely thriving. It looks a nice race for him. Unless there is a superstar amongst the unraced horses, I think he'll be awfully hard to beat." Click here to see the Caulfield fields.

Sky To Show Qld RacingSky Racing and Racing Queensland (RQ) will launch live digital coverage of the Group One race days during the Brisbane carnival, starting with today’s Doomben 10,000. The coverage begins today and will be streamed live on RQ's website and UBET's digital platform. "This is a significant development for racing in Queensland," RQ chief executive Eliot Forbes said. "Viewers have been able to watch the races live on television but this coverage will be high-quality, with dedicated television presenters and content aimed at informing and entertaining the viewer."

Tourneur To Ride At ClareJockey Dom Tourneur looks set to make his racing comeback at Clare tomorrow, four weeks after breaking four ribs in racetrack fall at Morphettville. Tourneur said he feared he would miss the entire Adelaide Carnival after the fall, in which he also sustained four broken ribs and massive bruising as well as breaking his nose in two places. "I'm pretty keen and chomping at the bit to get a result and then hopefully get some rides on Goodwood Day next week," Tourneur told Racing.com

Lismore Races Transferred To CasinoDue to the recent flooding and the slower than expected recovery of Lismore Racecourse, the SKY 2 TAB meeting on Saturday 3 June will now take place at Casino Racecourse. Due to the transfer the Maiden Handicap will now be run over 1000 metres, rather than 1100 metres, while all other races remain unaltered. Nominations for the meeting close at 11am on 29 May.

Rotorua Cup Meeting AbandonedFollowing torrential rain on the North Island, today’s Rotorua Cup meeting has been abandoned. A total of 35 millimetres of rain fell overnight on Thursday and continued on Friday morning, with the surface at Arawa Park rated a Heavy 11 with standing water on parts of the track. “Following torrential rain throughout the Waikato and Bay of Plenty regions the Rotorua meeting scheduled for Saturday 13 May has been abandoned,” an update on the New Zealand Racing website said. “The track was inspected by club and Racing Integrity Unit officials and is inundated with surface water. (Colombia) will bid to snap a 13-race losing run in the Energy City Ford Open (1800m) at Pukekura today. The seven-year-old was last successful in the Feilding Gold Cup (Listed, 2100m) at Awapuni in October 2015, but Opaki-based Macgregor feels he is back to something like his best. “I’m hoping it doesn’t get too heavy because I think he’s a good chance,” MacGregor said. “On Thursday he worked like his old self. He worked extra good. It’s the first time he’s worked like that for a long time.”

Farm Boy RetiredGroup Two winner Farm Boy (El Hermano) has been retired from racing after bleeding in a track gallop. The Tim and Margaret Carter-trained six-year-old, who won the Avondale Cup (Gr 2, 2400m) in February 2015 and went on to finish placed at Group One level on two occasions, has since begun training for his new role as a clerk of the course horse with Terry Wenn. "He was a pretty special horse to us and we think it's fantastic that he will have a career after racing," Margaret Carter said. "Terry Wenn has been

Winner’s Way Set For Step Up In ClassThe Tony Cruz-trained Winner’s Way (Starcraft) is set to step up in class for the Macwhinnie Cup (1400m) at Sha Tin today. The gelding ran out a convincing winner of a Class Two handicap over 1650 metres at Happy Valley last time, and jockey Zac Purton is feels the drop back in trip for the Class One race is no issue. “It was a good effort at the Valley. He did it the whole race - he began well, went along at good fractions and gave a good kick,” Purton said. “I’ve only been on him once but he’s shown his versatility and I think at 1400 (metres) he’s sharp enough as long as he begins like he did the other day.”

Callan Keen On California WhipJockey Neil Callan is expecting a big run from California Whip (Giant’s Causeway) in today’s HK$2,500,000 Macwhinnie Cup. The four-year-old was beaten a nose into second place by Midnight Rattler (Clang), who re-opposes today, over the same 1400 metre course and distance at his last start, and Callan is confident of another good run. “His form’s been pretty good and he ran well in the Classic Cup over a trip that was a bit far for him,” he said. “Over his optimum trip, 1400 (metres), he’s been running quite strongly. The track and trip is probably perfect for him. The small field is ideal because he’s very versatile - he has speed and you can put him where you like.”

239 For GalileoCliffs Of Moher (3 c ex Wave by Dansili) continued the excellent form of the Aidan O’Brien stable when taking out the Dee Stakes (Listed, 1m2.5f) at Chester yesterday, in the process providing

Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) with his 239th stakes winner. The colt raced on the shoulder of the front-running Max Zorin (Cape Cross) until the home straight when he wore down that rival, and he had enough in hand to hold off the fast-finishing Bay Of Poets (Lope De Vega) by a length and a half, with Max Zorin a further three quarters of a length behind in third place. Cliff Of Moher is now a general 6/1 chance to provide Coolmore’s champion sire Galileo with his fourth Derby (Gr 1, 1m4f) winner.

the last stride to win the Ormonde Stakes (Gr 3, 1m5.5f) at Chester yesterday. The gelding, who now has five Group Three wins to add to his victory in the Prix Eugene Adam (Gr 2, 2000m) as a three-year-old, raced in behind the leaders under Frankie Dettori. US Army Ranger (Galileo) looked set to collect another feature race for Aidan O’Brien when kicking clear in the straight, but Dettori conjured a strong late run out of the six-year-old to win by a short-head, with Duretto (Manduro) a further three quarters of a length behind in third.

Record Price At Arqana Breeze-Up SaleAt the time of going press, a colt by the Darley-based sire Street Sense (Street Cry) was topping the Arqana Breeze-Up Sale in Deauville yesterday, after Kerri Radcliffe Bloodstock went to €1,400,000, the most ever paid for a horse at the sale. Catalogued as Lot 35, and offered as part of the Willie Browne's Mocklershill draft, he was purchased by MC Bloodstock for US$15,000 at last year's Keeneland September Yearling Sale. The 13 April born colt is out of the Listed-winning Seattle Slew (Bold Reasoning) mare Mystic Melody, who is herself out

of the Listed winner Munnaya (Nijinsky), making her a half-sister to the American Grade One winner Alpha (Bernardini). The colt looks set to go into training with Redcliffe’s husband Jeremy Noseda. The full report of the sale will be in tomorrow’s edition of ANZ.

Solow Out Of Royal AscotMultiple Group One winner Solow (Singspiel) has been ruled out of Royal Ascot by trainer Freddy Head. The gelding, who took out the Queen Anne Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) at the Royal meeting in 2015, has been off the track since March last year after picking up a leg injury in his preparation for the 2016 Dubai Turf (Gr 1, 1800m). "His progress is slow. He's not that well and we have had a few problems. He's not going to be running in the near future and he won't be going to Ascot,” Head told Sportinglife.com.

Always Dreaming Gallops At PimlicoThe Todd Pletcher-trained Always Dreaming (Bodemeister) galloped a circuit of the track at Pimlico on Thursday in preparation for his Preakness

Stakes (Gr 1, 9.5f) tilt next Saturday. The colt won the Kentucky Derby (Gr 1, 10f) last weekend, and his trainer has been pleased with his progress since then. "He continues to show us all of the positive signals that we're looking for," Pletcher told Bloodhorse.com. "His energy level has been good since the race. He handled the ship well. His appetite has been good. I thought he had a real good gallop over the track (Thursday) morning.”

Songbird Works At Santa AnitaMultiple Grade One-winning filly Songbird (Medaglia d’Oro) worked over five furlongs at Santa Anita on Thursday as she nears a return to the track. The four-year-old won each of her first 11 starts before suffering a nose defeat to Beholder (Henny Hughes) in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff (Gr 1, 9f) in November. “She worked really good,” Mike Smith, who was aboard for the gallop, told Thoroughbred Daily News. “I worked her with company, sat off a couple of lengths, and she just cruised up to her and galloped on out really, really nice.” Songbird could return in the Beholder Mile (Gr 1, 8f) at Santa Anita on 3 June.

Chatswood Stud have today announced that European Group Two winner Ajaya (Invincible Spirit) will shuttle to the Victorian-based

farm in the spring. The former William Haggas-trained four-

year-old commenced stud duties at Rathbarry Stud in Ireland this year and he will stand for a fee of $13,200 (inc GST).

Ajaya won the Gimcrack Stakes (Gr 2, 6f) as a two-year-old at York in August 2015 and rounded out his juvenile campaign with a fourth-placed finished behind Arrowfield Stud shuttler Shalaa (Invincible Spirit) in the Middle Park Stakes (Gr 1, 6f).

Ajaya’s sire Invincible Spirit (Green Desert) shuttled to Chatswood Stud from 2003 to 2006, and the operation’s manager Greg Willis

said that Ajaya appealed as the type of stallion to prove popular with Australian breeders.

"Ajaya is the right shuttle stallion to bring to Australia. He loved firm tracks, Redoute's Choice is in his female family and of course Ajaya will take his place in the same barn that his sire, Invincible Spirit did when he stood here,” Willis said.

"He is serving quality mares in his first Northern Hemisphere season in Ireland where some astute breeder's have noted his uncanny resemblance to his sire.

“I couldn't be more confident he will make it as a sire in Australia. We will be supporting him very well.”

Ajaya is one of two named foals out of the unraced Hennessy (Storm Cat) mare Nessina, who is a half-sister to the stakes-winning pair Tantina (Distant View), herself the dam of Group One winner Cityscape (Selkirk) and Group Two winner and sire Bated Breath (Dansili), and Colonialism (Empire Maker).

His second dam is the American Grade Two winner Didina (Nashwan), while this is also the same family as multiple Grade Three winner

Group Three-producing sire Reward For Effort, who covered 173 mares last season, will again stand for $16,500 (inc GST), while 2010 Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Anacheeva’s fee remains $6,600 (inc GST).

These announcements follow the news that All American (Red Ransom), whose progeny are headed by dual Group One winner Yankee Rose, will relocate to Chatswood Stud this year, and he will stand for a fee of $13,200 (inc GST).

having regard to the circumstances of the race including distance and context of the race, such as a staying race or a rider endeavouring to encourage his mount to improve.”

That (b) says ‘In the final 100 metres of a race, official trial or jump-out a rider may use his whip at his discretion.’

So, now, in the last 100 metres of a race it’s at the jockey’s discretion, not the steward’s. Now, I’m no expert on the law, but that would appear to say that the rider, in the last 100 metres, may do whatever he or she bloody well likes. Who wrote this amendment and who ratified it?

Hardly in line with the spirit of the 2009 changes, reflecting contemporary community attitudes, which Racing Australia (then the ARB) intimated was in response to public perception and opinion and specifically stated that one reason behind the implementation was ‘to protect the welfare of horses.”

Let’s consider the first part of the rule (see above) as it stands now. What a load of gobbledygook and a potential minefield of interpretation - what’s a ‘minor infraction’; what ‘circumstances’ of the race; what’s the definition of ‘encouraging to improve’.

“The whip shall not be used on more than five occasions save and except etc...” does not look to be an attempt to make a better rule but an amendment which they possibly hope provides an ‘out’ against any litigation.

The authorities are just making it muddier and murkier.

It will be interesting to say the least to see whether the connections of Violate (Sebring)

@anz_news anzbloodstocknews.com| 14 |

The RSPCA would appear to be quite reasonable in their renewed push for a whip ban.

Heather Neil, chief executive officer of RSPCA Australia, says a whip ban would do nothing to change interest in racing and its integrity. I agree.

Furthermore, she said: “The RSPCA is quite happy for a jockey to carry a whip for emergency safety situations, should they require it, but they should not be used routinely in a race like we are seeing on a day to day level."

However, I doubt she’ll get much of a reception from that mysterious body called Racing Australia. In fact, Racing Australia is seemingly moving further away from a whip ban than ever before and that’s transpired almost unnoticed, by accident or design.

Let’s have a look at what’s happened. The

first change from the old rule, which simply allowed stewards to police ‘unnecessary, excessive or improper’ use of the whip, at their discretion was implemented in August 2009.

The rule then read: “In a race or trial a rider using the whip must give his horse time to respond and, other than on one occasion in the last 200 metres when the whip may be used in three consecutive strides, the whip shall not to be used in consecutive strides, other than in a slapping motion down the shoulder, with the whip hand remaining on the reins, or alternatively in a backhand manner.”

Now, as of February this year, the rule reads: “The whip shall not be used on more than

five occasions save and except where there have only been minor infractions and the totality of the whip use over the whole race is less than permitted under AR.137A(5)(a) and (b) and also

take their case any further. Violate of course, ran second in the recent Gunsynd Quality (Gr 3, 1600m) at Eagle Farm, in which winning rider Tiffani Brooker used the whip 12 more times than permitted on Dreams Aplenty (Dream Ahead).

Former leading steward John Schreck, this week, said there should not be an option for objections to be made on the basis of whip offences. I disagree. I don’t want a racing police state.

“Objection rules were designed for incidents of horses against horses, which can be measured. It’s tangible. You can see it,” he said. That is arguable to say the least in my view. Interference cannot be precisely measured and this is yet another bugbear of mine as stewards seem to have become more gung-ho in upholding protests.

I believe there is a need for an immediate summit of all stewards and senior industry officials to address, amongst other things - the whip rule, cobalt, harmonisation of rules

Australian wide, mandatory minimum penalties and a universal policy of protest evaluation (roughly along the lines of unless it’s downright obvious, then objection dismissed).

Bear in mind that Racing Australia (then ARB) created this whip mess, not me but I am now an advocate of a ban, simply because I’m playing the ball as it lies. It’s just too convoluted as it is.

Nothing would change. We’d all still bet. It would be extremely good for public

perception, read our standing as a responsible sport. It’s a much better sporting look to see two fit jockeys urging their horses hands and heels rather than flailing whips.

Some trainers will tell you some horses need it. Irrelevant. Some horses need soft ground, or cover, or won’t go between horses etc. It would just be another vagary of the game.

So, unless jockeys can be absolutely convincing in their argument that the whip is a

necessary safety tool then I think it should be banned. Begin with next season’s two-year-old races only and proceed year by year.

John MorriseyAgain on policing matters, has the world gone

stark raving mad? Gold Coast trainer John Morrisey gets nine month ban for a cobalt positive.

I’m taking the evidence as reported. Morrisey says he treats horse with a supplement which he’d been told did not contain any prohibited substance. This does not appear to have been disputed. Stewards test supplement and find it contains cobalt.

OK, Morrisey should arguably have done his own research and known this and is entitled to some sanction…but nine months? And nine months after stewards took into account his guilty plea, his UNBLEMISHED record over a long period as a leading trainer, and his forthright and honest evidence. Really?

Analysis: The Godolphin-raced, Irish-bred Duca Valentinois, who was having his third run this preparation scored a smart win here, his first win at stakes level in 24 starts to date. He settled back in tenth place, on the rails, behind a strong pace before getting through to fifth on straightening. He then sprinted well, took the lead at the 100m and went on to score easily under his limit weight (53kg). God’s In Him raced back in third last place in the 15-horse field, got along the inner rounding the home turn, continued along the rails, going to second at the 100m and the fought on to hold that position at the post. Pajaro also raced towards the tail of the field before switching out on turning for home. He then ran on well to take a good third. Of the others, the favourite Moher had a good trip in fourth place, briefly looked a threat at the 200m before finishing (3 lengths)

fourth after seeming to have every chance while Fabrizio went to the front but was pressured in the lead (by Royal Tudor) before weakening under his 59kg to finish (5.1 lengths) ninth after working most of the race.
