“There are a lot of shrewd small breeders

in the Hunter who’d seen the quality of his stock and came on board last year,”

Kingstar Farm’s Adam Cook said yesterday. “It was just reward for Bull Point

and Matthew (Sandblom) to get that support - and they look like they will be

rewarded too. There are bigger things to come for Bull Point.”

He has had three winners and three placegetters from his first

eight starters on both sides of the Tasman, including stakes-placed

Encountabull, who finished second in the Inglis Nursery (RL, 1000m), and

the unbeaten Yourpoint, who had Group 2 winner Vernazza (More Than

Ready) three lengths astern at his only start.

“We are very excited to see Yourpoint return, he is a very, very good

horse,” Cook said. “He’s had one start for one win and unfortunately

went slightly shin-sore after that and then things were shut down due to

coronavirus."

The Matthew Sandblom-owned Kingstar Farm already announced in

ANZ Bloodstock News last week that one of last season’s most promising

juveniles, Unite And Conquer (Hinchinbrook), will join Bull Point, Lord

Of The Sky (Danerich) and Salade (Snitzel) on the four-stallion roster. He

will stand at $6,600 (inc GST).

Cook reported yesterday that interest in the rising four-year-old,

whose career was marked by precocity and speed and whose pedigree

features classy speed influences Snippets (Lunchtime), Danehill (Danzig)

and Vain (Wilkes), has been significant, with lifetime breeding rights

available for interested breeders.

“We’ve been inundated with early interest. He has a unique pedigree

and had such natural talent that he’s generated quite a deal of interest,”

Cook said. “We’ve made him very accessible with live foal payment and

breeding right opportunities.

“We’ve been buying at the broodmare sale and getting mares that

will physically suit Unite And Conquer. He's a dead-set two-year-old-

looking stallion, 16 hands with really good length, a big hip, big shoulder,

short cannons and pasterns. Since we agreed to buy the horse, we’ve

purchased 17 mares and we have over 100 mares on the farm. Many of

them complement him as well.”

Lord Of The Sky will stand at $4,400 (inc GST), down from $5,500 (inc

GST), with his oldest crop being weanlings. Salade is also available to

breeders; his price is available on application.

Sandblom and Kingstar Farm will also offer live foal payment to

ensure that breeders across the spectrum are able to access their stallions.

Fred Best a Stradbroke qualifier for ExhilaratesGodolphin hopes that last year’s Magic Millions

2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) winner Exhilarates

(Snitzel) can secure her place in the Stradbroke

Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m) by winning Saturday’s

Fred Best Classic (Gr 3, 1350m) at Doomben.

Exhilarates won the Magic Millions Classic off a

seven-day back-up and trainer James Cummings

is hoping history repeats with the filly. "There is a

good chance she will get in (the Stradbroke) but

I'd like to run her in the Fred Best and make sure,"

Cummings said. "And it would suit her because

she thrives off a seven-day back-up. She's a tough,

talented filly who's proved herself." Exhilarates is

currently a $26 chance, behind current pre-post

favourite and stablemate Trekking (Street Cry).

Innes booked for Dawn PassageAlso likely to line up in the Fred Best Classic is

Dawn Passage (Dawn Approach), who enters off

wins in the Hawkesbury Guineas (Gr 3, 1400m)

and the Inglis Guineas (RL, 1400m). Dawn Passage

is 37th in the order for the Stradbroke Handicap

and needs to win to guarantee his spot. Brad

Stewart will take the ride on the Gai Waterhouse

and Adrian Bott-trained colt on Saturday, with

James Innes Jr - who is currently in quarantine -

booked to ride at 50 kilograms for the Stradbroke.

Black type or QTIS bonus a conundrum for TregeaCommand’n’conquer (Warhead) has been one

of the rising stars of the Brisbane carnival, but

trainer Steve Tregea is torn whether to step him

out in a QTIS race at the Gold Coast on Friday

or the Fred Best Classic on Saturday to end his

first campaign. Command’n’conquer has been

beaten at his last two starts at the Gold Coast and

has appeared unsuited around the tight track.

"The Fred Best looks like being a really good race

with a couple of Stradbroke Handicap hopefuls

like Dawn Passage and Grand Piano in it," Tregea

said. "I think Command'n'conquer is up to top

class but don't forget this is his first campaign. In

the end I am looking to accept in both races and

then work out the best way to go."

Not An Option still on track for AtkinsAfter watching runners struggle through the

testing track conditions in the first race at

Randwick on Saturday, Tony Pike was relieved

the decision had been made to scratch his

two-year-old Not An Option (Not A Single

Doubt) from his assignment. Temporarily

in the care of Rosehill trainers Richard and

Michael Freedman due to the current Covid-19

conditions that restrict Pike from travelling to

Australia, the colt is heading to the J J Atkins

(Gr 1, 1400m) and will instead trial before the

juvenile feature. “A heavy track and carrying 60

kilograms wasn’t ideal for him, so after watching

the first race I was happy he didn’t run,” Pike

said. “He will go to the trials at Canterbury

next Friday instead. We will probably put the

blinkers on him and the 1400 metres at Eagle

Farm will be perfect for him. He’s had a ten-day

break and a little freshen up and from what we

have seen he should be very competitive.”

McGillivray seeks stay to ride in StradbrokeJockey Matt McGillivray will need to be

granted a stay on a suspension if he is to ride

in the Stradbroke Handicap and the J J Atkins.

McGillivray pled guilty to careless riding at

Eagle Farm on Saturday and he was suspended

for seven days from midnight next Sunday.

With a shortage of top jockeys in Brisbane for

the features, McGillivray is likely to be popular

should he be granted a reprieve.

Dolan ready for next step of his careerApprentice Robbie Dolan will this week be on par

with his senior counterparts, having outridden

his claim last week. And while the 24-year-old

Irish rider will now be an apprentice in name

only, he feels that he is ready to match some of

the giants of the weighing room, especially given

his ability to ride at 49 kilograms comfortably. "I

feel like I've worked my way up, I'm riding with

enough confidence to take the next step," Dolan

said. "Obviously it's very hard to do it in Sydney

but I feel I've had a good grounding here and I've

got plenty of good connections behind me. Going

forward I'd like to think I can be one of the go-to

light weight jockeys in the room."

Freeman impresses with Australian debutGerman Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) runner-up Django

Freeman (Campanologist) produced a strong

performance for third at Flemington on Saturday

at what was his first Australian run, an effort

that had trainer Robert Hickmott in raptures

yesterday. Django Freeman arrived in Australia in

August and was being set for the Turnbull Stakes

(Gr 1, 2000m) and the Cups until he suffered a

knee injury. "It was super as he was probably 80 to

85 per cent fit," Hickmott said. "The wet track was

always a bit of an issue, but Craig (Williams) said

he got through it OK, not that comfortable, but

OK. When he'd had enough he still put his head

out and had a crack. He's a very genuine colt and

we couldn't be happier first-up." Django Freeman

will step up to 2040 metres at Moonee Valley for

his next start.

Cumani open to spring carnival alterationsTrainer Matt Cumani believes that the chance to

make changes to the Melbourne spring carnival

is an opportunity that can allow the industry to

adapt to recent developments within Australian

racing. "It’s all relatively new to me and I'm still

adapting to the calendar here, learning about its

nuances and then making plans for my horses,"

Cumani said. "But I have my question marks

about why certain races are where they are and

the way big races are built towards. Maybe if it

were to change, it may come back to my way of

thinking and a more European way. Races may

be spaced out a bit more and we have seen a

few Australian trainers going that way as well."

Coronavirus delays Ballarat move for McEvoyIn a world without Covid-19, the end of the

Adelaide carnival would have seen trainer Tony

McEvoy and rider Barend Vorster relocating to

Ballarat, with McEvoy’s son Calvin continuing

to head up the stable at Angaston. However,

the on-course stables - which are under

construction - have been held up due to the

coronavirus pandemic. McEvoy hopes to be

at Ballarat in time for the Melbourne spring.

"All the stalls are built, all the stables are built,

everything is ready to be put up," McEvoy

said. "They were all pre-built at Swan Hill and

just waiting to be stood up and once they get

the all clear, it will go up pretty quickly. I can't

wait to get there as it will give us a lot more

opportunities. It's also an amazing training

centre as the results coming from there show."

Brisbane stables set for country carnivalsQueensland’s country features, particularly up

north, will proceed but with reduced prize-

money. However, the early confirmation of their

scheduling ensures that Brisbane horses will be

able to travel to the features. Rockhampton (July

17), Mackay (July 31), Townsville (August 14)

and Cairns (August 28) will each feature a Cup,

a sprint and a three-year-old race. "Our Cup

meetings across central and north Queensland

are among the highlights on the state's

regional racing calendar," Racing Queensland

chief executive Brendan Parnell said. "While

Covid-19 has impacted on our ability to run a

traditional winter carnival, we're pleased to be

able to retain the staying, sprinting and Guineas

features in 2020."

Four-month suspension for Queensland jockeyRider Stanley Watkin has been suspended for

four months on a handling charge after he

rode Hacksaw Ridge (Animal Kingdom) into

sixth in a TAB meeting at Emerald on April 11.

Watkin, who is based in central Queensland,

was issued with a charge under the rule which

states a rider must take all reasonable and

permissible measures to ensure a horse is

given every opportunity to win or to obtain

the best possible place. Stewards alleged that

between the 800 metres and the 300 metres,

Watkin failed to improve his position when it

was reasonably permissible to do so. He also

was judged to have shown insufficient vigour in

the home straight. Watkin’s suspension ends on

September 14.

NEW ZEALAND

Bostonian back at homeThis year’s Brisbane carnival is missing one of

the stars of last year’s winter with The Bostonian

(Jimmy Choux) back in New Zealand. The

Bostonian took out consecutive Group 1 events

last season with victories in the Doomben

10,000 (Gr 1, 1200m) and the Kingsford-Smith

Cup (Gr 1, 1300m) but is currently easing his

way back into stable life after returning from a

successful Sydney autumn campaign recently,

in which he won the Canterbury Stakes (Gr 1,

1300m). “We thought we’d give him a break

after his Sydney efforts so he spelled over there

and then came home on the first flight back

once the travel restrictions were eased,” trainer

Tony Pike said. “He’s back in work now and I’ll

be talking with his owner about plans for him

once we see how he is coming up. There are

some races back in Sydney for him later on in

August including the Winx Stakes.”

Sherwood Forest to return to New Zealand soonAnother of Pike’s stable stars is New Zealand

Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Sherwood Forest

(Fastnet Rock), who spelled in Australia after

two midfield efforts in the Rosehill Guineas (Gr

1, 2000m) and the ATC Australian Derby (Gr 1,

2400m). Pike reported that Sherwood Forest

would return to New Zealand in the next couple

of weeks before being eased back into training

with a light spring campaign in mind. Like most

New Zealand trainers, Pike is currently working

to get his team together for the restart of racing

with up to 20 horses set to be back in action

once racing kicks off in July. “Often we haven’t

had many at this time of the year as they have

raced through the months we were in lockdown

but this time they have had a break so we are

likely to have a number of runners ready to kick

off again,” he said.

Waddell to relocate to AustraliaLeading rider Jason Waddell announced on

Twitter yesterday that he would be relocating to

Australia in the coming weeks. Waddell, a 13-

time Group 1 winner, had considered shifting

across the Tasman last year, even applying for

a trackwork rider’s job with Gai Waterhouse

and Adrian Bott for which he was unsuccessful.

However, he has found his groove again in recent

months, winning three top-level features in the

first three months of 2020 before racing was shut

down in New Zealand. He is yet to announce

where he will base himself in Australia.

Hong Kong yesterday. Thanks Forever prevailed

in a thrilling finish, overhauling Hot King Prawn

(Denman) and Big Party (Exceed And Excel) to

win by a neck. Offered by Kitchwin Hills at the

2017 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, the

bay was purchased for $170,000 by George Moore

Bloodstock. Duporth will stand at Aquis Farm’s

Canungra property in Queensland this year at a

winner yesterday when Miyaji Kokuo (3 c ex

Eminent City by Brian’s Time) took the Hosu

Stakes (Listed, 1800m) on the Kyoto dirt. Miyaji

Kokuo, a half-brother to former top dirt horse

and notable stallion Espoir City (Gold Allure),

has now won three of his five starts after scoring

by three lengths yesterday. Purchased for 22.68

million yen (A$322,400) at the 2018 Hokkaido

June and July in a bid to earn a late berth in the

Kentucky Derby (Gr 1, 10f) at Churchill Downs

in September. Victoire Pisa stands at Breeders

Daring Tact takes Japanese OaksHot favourite Daring Tact (3 f Epiphaneia - Daring

horse to win the first two legs of the Japanese Fillies’

Triple Crown while remaining undefeated when

she took out the Yushun Himba (Gr 1, 2400m), the

Japanese Oaks, yesterday. The Haruki Sugiyama-

trained Daring Tact backed up her win in the Oka

Sho (Gr 1, 1600m), the Japanese 1,000 Guineas, with

an electric victory under Kohei Matsuyama. Fifteen

horses have completed the Oka Sho-Yushun Himba

double, but only Miss Onward (Hard Sauce) in 1957

was able to remain undefeated through her Oaks

win. Daring Tact defeated longshots Win Marilyn

(Screen Hero) and Win Mighty (Gold Ship).

Windsor Park Stud’s shuttle stallion Charm Spirit

(Invincible Spirit) registered a seventh individual

stakes winner at Bordeaux le Bouscat on Saturday

when Fantastic Spirit (3 c ex Fantastic Cuix by

Fantastic Light) took out the Derby du Midi (Listed,

1900m). Given a superb ride by Hugo Journiac,

who saved ground before bringing Fantastic Spirit

through a split near the inside, he was able to sprint

through before stoutly holding off Again Music

(Palace Episode) by a short neck with a length to

favourite Frohsim (Dabirsim) in third. Charm Spirit

Churchill Downs yesterday. Godolphin’s

Maxfield, who won the Claiborne Breeders’

Futurity (Gr 1, 8.5f ) among two wins from

two starts as a two-year-old, now appears

bound for the three Triple Crown races after

his impressive return, with the traditional

last leg - the Belmont Stakes - now the first

leg over a shortened nine furlongs on June

20. "Absolutely, (the Belmont) and everything

else is in the picture," trainer Brendan Walsh

told Bloodhorse. "Every time he runs, it looks

returning from Dubai, where he was scheduled

to run in the Sheema Classic (Gr 1, 2400m)

before the World Cup meeting was called off.

“I thought I was second,” Prat told Bloodhorse.

"He was ready today, but this is not the type of

race that he likes. He’s better when he has a few

horses in front of him and a stronger pace. He’s

getting better and better with each race. He

always gives a lot.”

Daytona success for Wildman Jack Also successfully returning from Dubai at

Santa Anita yesterday was Wildman Jack (4 g

Goldencents - Orientatious by Orientate), a

last-start winner of the Nad Al Sheba Turf Sprint

(Gr 3, 1200m) on Super Saturday at Meydan. He

was scheduled to run in the Al Quoz Sprint (Gr 1,

1200m) before coronavirus brought the meeting

unstuck. Wildman Jack took the Daytona Stakes

(Gr 3, 5.5f) by a nose over outsider Sparky Ville

(Candy Ride). “He came back from Dubai in

perfect shape and he continued to train well,”

said trainer Doug O'Neill. “This race came up

tough, like a Breeders' Cup race. It's nice to

have 'Big Money' Mike (Smith), I can tell you

that. Midway through the race, it looked like

maybe we were dropping out of it, but he still

had horse.”

Sharing a possibility for Royal AscotBreeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (Gr 1, 8f)

winner Sharing (3 f Speightstown - Shared

Account by Pleasantly Perfect) made a perfect

start to her three-year-old career by taking out

the inaugural Tepin Stakes (1600m) at Churchill

Downs yesterday. The race, named for the top

mare who won the Queen Anne Stakes (Gr 1,

1m) at Royal Ascot among six Grade 1 victories,

may serve as a Royal Ascot preparation this

year with Sharing’s connections considering

aiming her at the Coronation Stakes (Gr 1, 1m)

on her way to the Kentucky Oaks (Gr 1, 9f) on

dirt in September. "It's great seeing her back to

her form from last year," jockey Manuel Franco

said. "She's very classy, but it makes your job

easier when you have nice horses underneath

you."

BY JAMES THOMAS AND MARTIN STEVENS

A good book is an essential

companion during lockdown,

and for bloodstock aficionados

there can be no finer read than

Horsetrader, as co-authors Patrick Robinson

and Nick Robinson chart the story of Robert

Sangster's bid to corner the thoroughbred market

with partners Vincent O'Brien and John Magnier.

The trio's policy of plundering major US

yearling sales in pursuit of 'baby' stallions

proved a modus operandi that reshaped

the bloodstock market forever, with the

reverberations of their actions still felt around

the industry to this day.

Those who have read the spellbinding story

of swashbuckling sales ring battles, which was

first published in 1993, will be pleased to learn

that Sangster's son, Adam, has ensured that his

father's entrepreneurial flair in the stallion market

endures from his Swettenham Stud in Nagambie,

Australia.

Ahead of the 2018 Australian breeding

season, Swettenham launched what it dubbed

an 'each-way bet' for breeders in the Foalshare/

Wholeshare initiative, with the stud entering

into a foal share agreement for the progeny

of stallions Trust In A Gust (Keep The Faith),

Rebel Dane (Danehill), Puissance De Lune

(Shamardal) or Americain (Dynaformer).

"We had about 50 mares come to the

stallions on Foalshare/Wholeshare across the

four stallions that we had on offer for the 2018

breeding season," reports Sangster. "On top of

that, there were another 60 breeders who came

through the Foalshare/Wholeshare opportunity

but decided to pay for their nominations due to

the fact that the stallions were selling so well."

The scheme meant that when a foal was

born, breeders were given 14 days to decide

whether they would like to exercise their buyout

clause and pay the service fee, giving them 100

per cent ownership of the foal, or press on with

the foal share arrangement.

If the breeder opted not to buy out, no

covering fee was payable and the foal was

sold at public auction, where the breeder and

Swettenham Stud split the net proceeds from

the sale 50-50.

"Of the 50 mares that went to the stallions

in that year, over half decided to buy out

Swettenham once they saw their foals,"

Sangster continues. "One breeder recently sold

their weanling filly for six figures from that foal

share, and this is exactly what we wanted to see;

breeders getting an opportunity to get a result

without the service fee."

The Australian breeding industry continues

to live through a boom period that has seen a

who's who of the bloodstock world take up

interests in the country. However, Sangster is

acutely aware that the industry requires not only

the participation of international powerhouse

operations, but the smaller breeder too.

"Thinking outside the box for the breeders'

benefit is something that we are always

doing as we want all of our supporters to be

successful. Our aim is to keep supporting the

smaller breeder as they are the backbone to the

industry, especially in Australia," he says.

"The Foalshare/Wholeshare scheme was

positively received by breeders across the board

and people really understood that the reason we

wanted to put this in place was to help breeders

and give them an opportunity to use the stallion

that they want to use, but see the foal before

deciding if they wanted to pay for it."

Breeding at any level comes with a degree

of financial risk, but Swettenham Stud is keen

to mitigate that where possible, and recently

launched the Breeder Support Initiative, which

offers an extended payment plan allowing

breeders to pay nomination fees in seven per

cent installments.

"Our most recent announcement is the

Breeder Support Initiative, whereby breeders

start paying seven per cent of the service fee

from when the mare receives a 45-day scan,

which essentially spreads the payments over

the period until the foal is about five months

old," explains Sangster.

"It allows the breeder to budget for service

fee and get a guarantee that their foal gets to the

weanling stage without any risk. The feedback

has been incredible from the breeders,

whether it be a small hobby breeder or a large

commercial breeder. They understand that we

are assisting them to manage their cashflow,

but also making sure that they are protected

should anything happen to the foal.

"Should the mare fail to produce a live foal,

all payments will be refunded to the breeder.

Should a mare produce a live foal that does not

make it to the timing of the final payment, a free

return will be issued to the breeder for any mare

they nominate for the following season."

While the Covid-19 pandemic has brought

much of the action in the thoroughbred world

to a standstill, Australia have continued to race

behind closed doors and the prestigious Inglis

Easter Yearling Sale broke new ground when

conducted entirely online earlier this year.

Nonetheless, it would only be natural for

breeders to experience heightened anxiety

during such a time, and Sangster says the

Swettenham team has done its utmost to

ensure life continues as normal for its patrons.

"We made it known to the entire industry

that our priority through this, as always, is the

ongoing success of the breeders who support

us," he says. "With the ability to be flexible and

nimble and treat each breeder as an individual,

we have managed to assist so many people over

the past couple of months to make sure their

lives and livelihoods are as normal and stress

free as possible.

"We've been able to offer things like the

Breeder Support Initiative, which has meant

that the season is looking promising for those

who have supported us. We kept our service

fees at an affordable level, and we are working

with each individual to ensure that we cater to

their needs at this time.

"From a farm perspective, we were able to

implement measures very early to ensure that

we had even stricter biosecurity measures in

place for the protection of all of our staff, which

has meant our horses continue to get the best of

care from my amazing team."

Forward-thinking stallion deals are far from

the only major draw at Swettenham, however,

with the farm, which was purchased by Robert

Sangster and Colin Hayes in 1995, welcoming

I Am Immortal (I Am Invincible) for the 2020

breeding season.

The son of Australian sire sensation I Am

Invincible was a precocious talent, winning

the Blue Diamond Preview (Listed 1000m) and

Blue Diamond Prelude (Gr 3, 1100m).

"I Am Immortal was an acquisition we

needed at Swettenham as he really completes

our roster," says Sangster. "He has a very similar

profile to his father in that he's a colonial

sprinter by the hottest sire in the southern

hemisphere.

"He's I Am Invincible's only dual stakes-

winning two-year-old colt in Australia. When

my team and I went to inspect him, we knew

the great racehorse that he was, winning both

of the lead-ups to the Blue Diamond in his first

two starts, but it was his physical attributes that

really sold us on him.

"He's so hard to fault. He's an oil painting to

look at and exactly what we know the breeders

love as he is strong, correct, a lovely walker and

stands over some ground at 16.2 hands high.

"He's from a fast family, being out of the

best daughter of Ad Valorem, and he showed

that when beating Microphone in the Blue

Diamond Preview in a faster time than Sepoy

and Hanseatic. We sold some shares in him and

they went like hotcakes, we were oversubscribed

very quickly. It certainly was an endorsement that

our decision to purchase him was also backed by

some of Australia's top breeders."

Swettenham also has plenty to offer

breeders in the shape of a couple of shuttle

stallions who are familiar names in the northern

hemisphere, including the globe-trotting great

Highland Reel (Galileo). The son of Galileo and

the Australian-bred Danehill mare Hveger will

begin his third southern hemisphere covering

season later this year.

"Highland Reel's foals are standouts," says

Sangster. "A very good judge told us just last

week that it's the best crop of foals that they've

ever seen. He got 148 mares in his first season

in Australia and most of those breeders went

back to him last season. They are so well put

together; all correct, powerful with the most

fluent walks you can see.

"He's certainly stamped his stock and the

Tattersalls and Goffs foal sales late last year

really showed the quality of his stock, with his

foals selling for up to €185,000 and to some

top judges like Bertrand Le Metayer, Glenvale

Stud, Blandford Bloodstock, JC Bloodstock,

Manister House Stud, Matt Houldsworth and

Ben Sangster."

Another shuttler on the Swettenham

roster is Haras de Bouquetot's Toronado (High

Chaparral). The son of High Chaparral has been

enjoying a hot run of form in Australia, sitting

in fifth in the second-season sires' table thanks

to the likes of the prolific Still A Star and the

hugely promising Masked Crusader. The Sussex

and Queen Anne Stakes hero was the most in-

demand stallion standing in Victoria in 2019.

"Toronado is certainly in demand, not only

in Australia but especially in Hong Kong, where

so many tried and untried Toronados have

been recently purchased," says Sangster. "He

was Victoria’s most popular horse in 2019 and

he is full again for 2020.

"The High Chaparral line seems to work so

well in Australia with sires like So You Think

and Dundeel and I think that comes down to

their ability to throw horses that can sprint and

those that can get out to a bit of a trip.

"From a pedigree point of view, Toronado is

free from Danehill and has so many mares that

match up well with him genetically. It definitely

doesn't hurt that his progeny have such a

physical presence as individuals."

Sangster may be busy writing his own

chapter of his family's storied life in racing and

breeding, but he still has time to reflect fondly,

and with no shortage of pride, on the impact

his father had on the modern thoroughbred

industry – and his own journey through it.

"To have a book like Horsetrader that is

timeless and appeals to such a global audience

makes me incredibly proud of my father, his

legacy and what he passed on to all of those that

were lucky enough to be around him," he says.

"His legacy lives on through our whole family

and it's incredible to look through pedigrees of

yearlings, mares and stallions across the world

and see how much he was able to shape what we

currently have today."

And while Horsetrader makes an absorbing

read, the tales contained within will always pale

in comparison to Sangster's own cherished

memories of his father, some of which have no

doubt influenced the innovative approach he

now takes to standing stallions.

"My memories are that our father allowed

my brothers and I to really embrace the industry

in every way without any pressure, going to

Keeneland for the July sales during school

holidays or living in Deauville at the Haras de

Monde de Mont until boarding school," he says.

"He managed to surround himself with the

best judges in their field and also with funniest

raconteurs for many legendary lunches. I

certainly never heard him raise his voice to

anyone. He taught me a lot about life, people and

about respect. We were very lucky to have him

as a father."

BY DAVID MORGAN | HKJC_RACING

It was hard work but Exultant (Teofilo) has

never been one to shirk a challenge. The

tough kingpin of the Hong Kong stayers’

division proved his preeminence with a

gritty second success in the Standard Chartered

Champions & Chater Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) at Sha

Tin yesterday.

The six-year-old bay dug deep to repel the

pressing Chefano (Silvano) and Furore (Pierro)

and ensure Tony Cruz a seventh victory in the

race as a trainer, all from the last eight renewals.

Cruz rates Exultant the best of a bunch that

includes California Memory (Highest Honor),

Blazing Speed (Dylan Thomas) and Pakistan

Star (Shamardal), at least when it comes

to ability over a mile and a half, a distance

contested only three times a season in Hong

Kong.

“He’s the better stayer of all of them – he has

no speed but he has a great attitude,” Cruz said.

Purton, who took a bang to the head in a

stalls incident half an hour before the feature,

asserted his view that “there’s no doubt he’s

the best stayer I’ve ridden in Hong Kong” after

driving his mount to a length verdict in a time

of 2:26.01.

Exultant’s second Group 1 of the season, hot

on the heels of his street-fighting success in last

month’s FWD QEII Cup (Gr 1, 2000m), pushed

him squarely into the reckoning for Hong Kong’s

Horse of the Year title, with star four-year-old

Golden Sixty (Medaglia d’Oro) likely to be the

sole, albeit significant, stumbling block.

“He can't really do any more than he’s

done, he’s been great all season, as he has been

for the past few seasons,” Purton said. “He

does deserve it – everyone wants to talk about

Golden Sixty but he only did it in the four-year-

old series, he didn’t come out and do it against

the older horses and I think it’s important that

is taken into consideration. That might be the

telling factor.”

Exultant was sent off the 1.5 favourite to

repeat his win of 12 months ago but it was never

going to be a flashy, win-as-you-like, display.

“It’s never easy in small fields when you're

on the favourite,” Purton said. “Everyone goes

out there to make your life difficult and they

tried to do that again today but fortunately I

was on a horse that was able to absorb some

pressure and still be able to fight out a finish.”

Stablemate Time Warp (Archipenko) set a

solid tempo up front and Purton settled one back,

slipstreaming, ready to make a determined drive

for home at the most opportune moment.

“He was the best horse – just get him up

there, let him travel and let him do his job,”

Purton said. “I was surprised Furore kept

kicking up on the inside, he had every chance

just to drop down and give himself an easy run

but he wanted to make my life difficult and in

turn made his own life difficult – that in turn

made Chefano do a little more work and set my

fellow alight as well.

“I thought, once again, I was out on my feet

at the 200 (metres) but today it was like he was

waiting for them a little more, it’s like he’s become

more cunning and I could feel, when they were

coming, he started to surge underneath.”

Thanks Forever takes Sha Tin Vase on dramatic day for Purton

Thanks Forever (Duporth) fought his way

to a deserved victory in the Sha Tin Vase (Gr 3,

1200m) yesterday to initiate a big-race brace on

an afternoon of plenty and pain for Purton.

The champion jockey had his head banged

against the starting gate before race seven

and then hit the deck when Regency Bo Bo

(Denman) stumbled after the start of the 10th

contest. He was unruffled.

“The (Hong Kong Jockey) Club was worried,

I wasn’t,” he said.

The Australian also collected a four-win

bounty to match his great rival Joao Moreira in

their battle for the jockeys’ premiership. And, if

Exultant’s success in the Champions & Chater

Cup was Purton’s satisfying main course,

Thanks Forever’s triumph – the gelding’s

overdue first in Group company – was the

tastiest of hors d’oeuvres.

“He deserved it, he’s been racing well this

season,” Purton said after the four-year-old had

clocked 1:08.96 in battling past the front-running

Hot King Prawn (Denman) and Big Party (Exceed

And Excel) by a neck and a short-head.

“It was a race he really had to win from that

gate (two) with that weight. The speed early was

really slow and then they made it a good sprint

home, so he had to chase hard and he did it well.”

Thanks Forever earned his fifth win at

his 16th start off the back of high-class efforts

this term, notably top-three placings in the

Centenary Sprint Cup (Gr 1, 1200m) and last

month’s Chairman’s Sprint Prize (Gr 1, 1200m).

“He really has deserved that,” trainer John

Moore said. “He’s been a model of consistency

without winning one of the black type races.

“Purton got off the fence quickly, he got

himself into one out, one back, and he was very

aware – even before the race – that he’d have to

pay attention to the pace set by Moreira on Hot

King Prawn. We knew if we gave him too much

start we wouldn’t pick him up.

“He was able to pick him up and he was

strong through the line. At the 300 (metres) I

wasn’t so sure but when Zac got into him and

he got him into gear I thought he was strong.”

Thanks Forever isn’t quite done for the

season either: Moore will aim the gelding at

next month’s Premier Cup (Gr 3, 1400m).

“We intend to go again in the 1400 (metres)

on June 21st – I’ve asked Zac to ride him again,”

he said.

Just Like ThatMoore was also on the mark with the

Purton-partnered Like That (Akeed Mofeed)

and the trainer’s double score took his tally

for the term to 47 wins, 10 behind premiership

leader Ricky Yiu.

Like That built on the promise of his last-

start win down the 1000-metre straight with a

comfortable success in the opener, the Pakistan

Star Plate (1200m) for Griffins. The juvenile will

next take his chance in open handicap grade.

“He’s not beaten too much, in my opinion,

they’re probably Class 4 and Class 5 horses,”

Moore said. “But he’s showing a bit of talent,

he’s doing what he has to do and each run

has been better – we’ll put him into a Class 3

1200-metre race next time and see if he can

cope with the rise but he’ll have his work cut

out for him in Class 3.

“I’ll keep him at 1200 metres because he’s

still not the finished product. Physically, he

looks quite forward for a two-year-old but his

heart and lungs need development so he’s a

work in progress.”

Moreira matching strides

While Purton nailed a quartet of wins all told,

Moreira also snared four on the 11-race card. The

big two carved up the races with merciless intent,

each attempting to beat the other to a fourth Hong

Kong champion jockey title.

The Brazilian took the Class 4 Mighty High

Handicap (1600m) on the Me Tsui-trained

Enjoy Life (Falkirk) and the Class 3 Werther

Handicap (1200m) on Good Luck Friend (Swiss

Ace) for the Yiu stable, and then delivered the

John Size-trained first starter Scores Of Fun

(Reward For Effort) to win the second section of

Class 4 Mr Medici Handicap (1200m).

He wrapped up his four-timer on the

Caspar Fownes-trained Defining Moment

(Good Journey) in the Class 3 Blazing Speed

Handicap (1800m).

Purton and Moreira ended the day as they

had started it, locked on the same number of

wins, this time a tally of 123 apiece. The reigning

champ also scored on the Frankie Lor-trained

Armor Star (Dalghar) in Race 2.

“It’s not much fun: I wish Joao would go

home and make it easy!” Purton quipped.

Antoine Hamelin brought a temporary

intermission to the Moreira-Purton show in

race seven with a strong-driving win on the

Tony Millard-trained Yee Cheong Pegasus

(Lonhro) in section one of the Class 4 Helene

Super Star Handicap (1200m).

After Regency Bo Bo’s mishap at the outset

of the penultimate race, the Class 3 California

Memory Handicap (1400m), Millard sealed a

brace when the Karis Teetan-ridden Amazing

Chocolate (Sepoy) streaked five and a quarter

lengths clear.

Neil Callan drove the Paul O’Sullivan-

trained Band Of Brothers (Sakhee’s Secret) to

a late-thrusting nose success over Glorious

Spectrum (Helmet) in the concluding Class 2

Viva Pataca Handicap (1400m).

BY NZ RACING DESK

Further testing of a breeding mare

previously imported from the

United Kingdom has confirmed

the horse is carrying the exotic

organism Theileria equi.

The mare in question was imported under

New Zealand protocols last year from France as

a maiden and has been resident at Cambridge

Stud since her arrival in February, 2019.

Cambridge Stud chief Henry Plumptre

has reported she was purchased at the Arqana

Breeding Stock Sale in December, 2018, was

negative in a pre-sale test, negative prior to

going into quarantine and was negative under

New Zealand protocols, before departing the

United Kingdom.

The mare had a suspected positive test

as part of standard export certification prior

to onward shipment to Australia, and further

blood tests were taken.

Theileria equi (T. equi) can cause anaemia

and is spread from animal to animal by ticks

or by shared equipment such as needles or

dental equipment. It is not infectious directly

between horses. The ticks that are known to

transmit the disease are a species not present

in New Zealand. To date it is uncertain if the

species that are widespread in New Zealand

are capable of spreading T.equi although it is

known they can spread infections with other

strains of Theleria.

Although it is not highly infectious,

Australia does not have Theileria equi and

exports currently require certification that New

Zealand is free of the disease to accept horses

from the country.

The New Zealand Ministry for Primary

Industries (MPI) market access specialists and

live animal exports team have been working

closely with Australian authorities to agree

alternative assurances to allow exports to

continue. Good progress is being made on the

development of a testing regime to support this.

Two shipments of horses to Australia this

week have had to be held while negotiations

continue.

The New Zealand Equine Health

Association (NZEHA) and MPI are aware

this situation is causing some concern to the

country’s significant equine sector and work

is underway to resolve things as quickly as

possible to ensure ongoing horse exports are

not interrupted.

There has not been a case of Theileria equi in

New Zealand before. Biosecurity NZ and MPI will

continue to work with international partners to

understand and investigate the situation.

Veterinarian investigators from MPI are

currently sampling horses at Cambridge Stud

as a precaution. The affected mare is contained

on the farm and will not be moved from the

property while investigations continue.

The mare tested negative for Theileria equi

within the required 21 days before its import to

New Zealand. Under international protocols,

testing from certified laboratories is part of the

horse importation process.

Part of that importation process also

requires that the horse is treated for ticks.

Prior to export, the horse was quarantined

in isolation for three weeks and underwent

examinations.

On arrival in New Zealand, the horse was

in post-arrival quarantine and inspected by an

equine veterinarian.

An MPI vet checks arriving horses on

arrival at the airport, at the quarantine location

within 24 hours of arrival, around the middle of

quarantine and then prior to release.

“Negotiations with Australia to resume

trans Tasman transport appear to be

“MPI Market Access are working on that

right now and what that will most likely mean

is we will be required to have two piroplasmosis

tests carried out on a single blood for all horses

being exported to Australia in the short to

medium term.”

Bridge said an immediate focus was to

facilitate the transport of in-foal mares across

the Tasman, which may only travel up to 300

days in foal.

“One of our priorities is ensuring those

mares covered in the first five days of last

breeding season are able to get to Australia by

June 26.

“There is also a shipment of horses bound

for Hong Kong via Sydney on June 7, so there is

some haste. Post Covid-19 air freight access is

another complicating factor, almost the perfect

storm.”

The New Zealand equine industry has

signed a Government Industry Agreement

(GIA) for Biosecurity readiness and response.

GIA operates as a partnership between

primary industry and government to manage

pests and diseases that could badly damage

New Zealand's primary industries, economy,

and environment.

Under GIA, Signatories share the

decision-making, responsibilities and costs of

preparing for – and responding to – biosecurity

incursions. By working in partnership, industry

and government can achieve better biosecurity

outcomes.

“Because that mare is a positive, it becomes

a response,” Bridge said.

“The contact groups have been investigated

by MPI veterinarian investigators, samples

have been taken which will be analysed over

the next week and we are fortunate that the stud

concerned has such a professional approach to

horse health.

“MPI have been very complimentary

regarding their detailed record-keeping and

they are such a farm that had a mare been

slightly off-colour, it would have been identified

immediately.

“I take a lot of confidence from the fact

there have been no horses diagnosed with

piroplasmosis symptoms on the property, or

in the country for that matter, and the mare has

been there since the beginning of 2019, so one

would anticipate we are reasonably safe.

“We are hopeful that the results from the

samples of the cohort mares and other horse

population on the property will come back

negative, which will set a platform for us to

move forward quite quickly and provide our

trading partners some confidence.”
