I’ve always loved to read, and as far back as I can remember, my mother had always read to me at night before going to bed. As
I got older, I continued this tradition, staying up to the first break of daylight on weekends devouring book after book. After finishing up a good novel, my thoughts would spin everywhere and I often found myself starting my own stories in my head based on what I had read—an intro or a new ending or plot twist.
However, I never thought to put those thoughts on paper until I took my first creative writing class in high school. That’s when the magic happened. I can still recall the feeling of pure bliss and excitement I had after finishing my first short story—a mystery/ romance piece. There was just something so beautiful about the way the words flowed together on paper and how I could manipulate them to change the whole feel of the story if I wanted to. It was a moment that ignited a spark of passion in me that has yet to fade. Every time I write something, whether it be a magazine article or story, I am still in awe of how truly fulfilling creating something all my own is.
It is that passion for creation that I was fortunate enough to experience throughout the month meeting some of the talented artists, sculptors, designers and jewelry makers featured in our magazine. Every time I would sit down and chat with one of them and learn about how they came to their craft, I could see that same spark of passion I felt when I discovered writing light up in their eyes as well. It was as if we shared a secret kinship in our collective passions.
Not only that, but I was able to view first-hand many of the wonderful, expertly-crafted works these artists have devoted their lives to making, and the experience was truly enlightening. So, in our “Local Artistry” issue I want to shine the spotlight on some of our talented residents and their works, like artist Andre Kohn, jewelry maker Vesna Taneva-Miller and signer/songwriter Blaine Long. Also be sure to check out our special Valentine’s Day Guide for the best ways to spend a romantic day in Chandler!

A SMILE CELEBRATIONFor her 8th birthday party, Chandler resident, Charlotte Gould, took
20 kids on a trolley ride around our beautiful city to throw kindness around like confetti with eight random acts of kindness. From hand-ing out balloons to children at a park to delivering floral arrangements to a senior living center, Charlotte and her friends proved Kind is the New Cool. They delivered donuts to Chandler PD, wrote letters to deployed servicemen and left pennies by a fountain for strangers to stumble upon to make “free wishes,” among many other good deeds bestowed on the community that day. For more information, please visit MillionDollarSmileCelebrations.BlogSpot.com.

Back Stage
FOR as long as Blaine Long can remember, he has loved to sing.
“As a little kid, in first grade or so, I remem-ber sitting in my room making up songs and
singing to myself, and thinking I was actually ‘doing it,’ as in what famous people do when they sing their songs,” says Long.
Around seven years ago, Long was able to take his love of singing and turn it into a full time career. The Chandler resident now makes his living singing and playing the guitar at venues across the Valley, including the Living Room in downtown Ocotillo.
“I play weekly at Bar Bianco at Pizzeria Bianco in Downtown Phoenix, Isabel’s Amor in Gilbert, and at Lon’s at the Hermosa in Scottsdale. I also play in Surprise at The Irish Wolfhound Pub and Restaurant,” says Long.
Fans of NBC’s “The Voice” are probably already familiar with Long and his impressive voice. He appeared on Season 11 of the show and made it onto Team Blake.
“I sang ‘Have a Little Faith in Me’ by John Hiatt for my blind audition, and Miley, Blake and Adam all turned their chairs. Alicia’s team was already full, but she said that she would have turned her chair for me,” says Long.
While Long didn’t advance past the Battle Rounds on “The Voice,” he says overall the experience was a good one and that he is grateful to the show and for the huge amount of support he received along the way.
“The support in Arizona has been amazing, and I look forward to continuing to play out and connect with my local community,” he says.
For Long, being a musician is more than just singing; it’s about writing songs that he hopes resonate with listeners.
“It’s about telling stories, connecting with people; and it’s about playing my guitar,” he says.
“Without any one of these, I’m bored and not interested. My pas-sion is for the whole deal. I love my job, which is to write songs about my experiences and share them with people. I’m a lucky guy.”
Looking ahead to the future, Long is anticipating the release of his newest record, titled “Scorpio,” which should be released by March, 2017.
“I will also keep playing shows locally, travel when I can, and try to be a better father, husband and songwriter,” he says.
As for people who find joy in singing and creating music for others but are unsure if they can be successful, Long offers this advice, “do it,” just as he thought back in the first grade.
“Go do it. On a street corner, open mic, Karaoke, YouTube or house concert, and hope that you’re great at it,” he says, adding that it’s okay to have a few bumps in the road along the way.
“But understand that you’ll be bad until you’ve done it enough that you figure ‘it’ out. It’s always about development and failure, and getting to know who you are as a person so you can communicate honestly to others.”
For more information on Long, and to check out his scheduled appear-
ances, please visit BlaineLong.com.

Artist’s Palette
Vesna Taneva-Miller heads to an unlikely place when she’s searching for materials to make her crafts: the trash pile.
“That’s where my passion is: I make crafts out of things that are usually considered garbage,” says the Chandler artist, who creates her signature paper-bead necklaces out of everything from Christmas gift tags to patterned envelopes for bills.
However, unlike many crafters, she was never terribly interested in crafts as a kid. That would come later in her life. But her personal background is as colorful as her work.
Taneva-Miller was born in Macedonia, in Eastern Europe. At the age of 15, she came to the United States as a high school exchange student and studied in Newport News, Virginia. She then returned to her native country to find out that her year in the states didn’t count for school credit, and not wanting to repeat a year, she went back to Virginia to study. She then went to college in Omaha and married her now husband during her last semester. The couple relocated to Arizona in 2002, and she’s been in the Valley ever since.
In 2004, she got a job working at an Alaska Airlines reservations hotline at night. During the wee hours when it got quiet, she tried crafting with her colleagues. She started with crocheting scarfs, moved on to jewelry, then made cards and jewelry. Eventually, she started her current blog, stitchplayinaz, documenting her crafts and travels. Her work has appeared in magazines like SEW Somerset, GreenCraft, and Art Quilting Studio.
She now sells earrings, necklaces, embroidery hoops and wrist pincushions in her Etsy shop. And her designs are as eclectic as what influences her creations.
“I can find inspiration everywhere,” she says. “When I’m in nature, when I go for a hike or go to a park. Maybe it’s because my senses are more open to everything around me. I feel like “Oh, I’ve got to make something.”
Taneva-Miller finds inspiration in work she’s personally drawn to as well. She’ll ask herself what about that object she was attracted to and try to incorporate that into her latest creation.
She’s also devoted to recycling and sees her crafting as a reincarnation, of sorts.
“You can think about things and see things with a different eye and give them another life,” she says.
See her work at Vision Gallery in downtown Chandler and at Practical Art in Phoenix or visit StitchPlayInAZ.com.

MAKE YOUR OWN PAPER BEADS
SUPPLIES: To make your own paper beads, you don't need much. Collect some junk mail for a week or so. Or, you can use brown gro-cery paper bags, book pages (comic books make a good visual effect), music sheets,
security envelopes and magazine pages.
YOU WILL ALSO NEED: Scissors (or a paper cutter if you have one), glue (Elmer’s), round toothpicks, Triple Thick (glaze to seal your beads, Madge
Podge or clear varnish can work too).
HOW TO MAKE THEM:
1. Cut the paper in one-inch strips. The width of your strip will determine the size/length of your bead. The length of your strip will determine the thickness/bulkiness of your bead. I taper my strip to a wedge, to
make my bead more oval. Experiment!
2. Start rolling your strip using a round toothpick. When you come to the last inch of your strip, add a little bit of glue so it can hold
your bead in place.
3. Once you make a handful of beads, use a brush and Triple Thick to coat your beads. This will make your beads shiny and
protect them from wear and tear.
4. Then let your beads dry. When you have enough beads, you can get creative and use them to make necklaces, earrings, bracelets, embellish journals, and make tassels. There
is no limit, let yourself be creative!

Fred and Ginger, hugs and kisses, wine and chocolate…some things just naturally go together! When we think of decadence or special occasions, we frequently think of chocolate and wine, a food and drink combination that beckons to the gourmand in all of us.
Experts agree, however, that chocolate with wine is not in fact a natural pairing, and can easily bring out the worst in each product. “Most everyone likes red wine and chocolate, but that doesn’t mean they dance well together,” says Andrew McCreery, Certified Wine Educator and Sommelier for d’Vine Gourmet, a local wine and gourmet food shop. “It ’s a tricky combination that when done well, is a delight for the senses and very enjoyable; but when paired incorrectly, it can have disastrous results.”
So how do you pair the two together correctly? “Practice makes perfect!” quips Denise McCreery, owner of d’Vine Gourmet and not-so-expert chocolate maker. “I love both wine and chocolate, and will pair any combo together just for fun, but sometimes it fails.” The following guide should help answer this tasty conundrum.
“First and foremost, stay away from the dry reds when enjoying chocolate, they almost never work regardless of the type of choco-late you are eating,” says Andrew. “You’ll need a wine with, at the very least, a hint of sweetness to counter balance the acidity and tannins of the wine.” So rather than a dry Cabernet Sauvigon or Chianti, try a California Merlot or Australian Shiraz. “These varietals are a bit juicier and complement the cocoa butter nicely, particularly with milk or white chocolates, creamed filled truffles and chocolate caramels.” When eat-ing super sweet chocolates, a bold red that’s not quite as sweet will pair nicely. Think molten lava cake with a Pinot Noir…yum!

This one can be trickier due to the acidity and citrus flavors more common in white wines. Again, we’re looking for some-thing with a hint of sweetness to counterbalance. “We have a white chocolate cherry bark that is amazing with a Riesling or Sauvignon Blanc, but didn’t work at all with Chardonnay!” says Denise, who is now experimenting with making chocolate treats specifically for wine pairing. That’s because traditional Chardonnays have a buttery finish that competes with the soft-ness of white chocolate, where a more crisp wine will give it that counterbalance. “One of my all time favorites is white chocolate cheesecake and Riesling, decadent yet refreshing!” says Denise.
It’s a classic combo for a reason…the dry yet slightly sweet bub-bles act both with and against almost every chocolate dessert out there, including chocolate covered strawberries. “I think Champagne or almost any sparkling wine works well with chocolate because of the wine’s ability to clean the palate,” says Andrew, who has first hand experience with wineries in the Champagne region of France. “Chocolate can take over the mouth with its cocoa butter, sugar and slow melting appeal. Champagne comes along and sweeps it all away, leaving a nice after taste and preparing your mouth for the next bite…it’s my favorite pairing of them all.”

Global Artist, Local Presence
ARTICLE MICHELLE TALSMA EVERSON | PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF ANDRE KOHN FINE ART GALLERY
Andre Kohn wears many hats: artist, interior designer, fine art collector and gallery owner.
Originally from Russia, his youth was spent surrounded by art. At age 15, he formally began his art education as an apprentice to some of Moscow’s most well-known artists. Kohn then pursued a classical fine arts education at the University of Moscow, where he worked hands-on with what he describes as the “last great generation of Russian Impressionists.” At age 20 though, he unexpectedly made the move to America, and it was a life changing experience for the young artist.
Global Artist,
“The transition [to the U.S.] was very difficult… I felt like a child thrown into a jungle at first; my parents did not know anything about the country or its culture and customs. I had to learn every-thing on my own from the very beginning. The cultural shock was immense in my situation, not to mention the language barrier, since I spoke almost no English coming to the country,” says Kohn. “It took many years before I was able to fully understand people here. [I also had to] learn the basics of the art industry and some-time subtleties of the business.”
Local Presence
34 Chandler Lifestyle | February 2017
Determined to continue his work, Kohn enrolled in school thanks to a scholarship specifically designed to help him con-tinue his arts education. He earned his B.F.A., then continued his education in France and Scottsdale.
“Continuing to educate myself was one of the reasons the profession of an artist attracted me in the first place,” says Kohn. “No matter how old you are in this industry, you always learn something new and keep growing.”
As his career progressed, Kohn became known for his work in Figurative Impressionism.
“Figurative Impressionism is a style based on following the classical French Impressionism. In my case, I focused only on interpreting the human figure in its infinite move-ments and gestures,” he explains. “It’s a very complex task to take on—and I love a good challenge.”
As his popularity in the States and abroad grew, Kohn says opening his own gallery was part of a natural pro-gression he saw for his career. A Valley resident, he chose Scottsdale for the location of Andre Kohn Fine Art Gallery.
“I am proud to say that I was the designer of my gallery, and would add that it is a boutique-style gal-lery,” he says. “We represent only a very few artists as opposed to many other galleries that represent dozens of different artists. We represent the artists I strongly believe in, and almost all of them I have a privilege to have in my modest private collection.”
In addition to his gallery, Kohn is proud to have published his own coffee table hard cover book, titled “The Endless World of a Moment,” and to have participated in the first Modern Master Impressionists Show in London in 2013.
“My number one piece of advice for aspiring artists is to find their own language of interpretation… To be called a true artist is a privilege,” says Kohn. “… My goal is not to change the world with my work or influence someone's mind, rather I have a lot of fun painting; it is done with true passion and I appreciate immensely when someone loves what I do and even purchases my work supporting the art industry and the art world.”
“THE SKY IS NOT THE LIMIT”
Andre Kohn Fine Art Gallery is currently showcas-ing many artists, including its latest solo show for artist Ksenya Verse. “She is one of the most promi-nent and prolific artists emerging on the American art scene today,” according to gallery staff. “Her style is a whimsical combination of reality and imagination with dramatic and colorful skies making up the backdrop. Creativity is a defining and important aspect of her work.” See Verse’s work at Andre Kohn Fine Art Gallery during normal business hours.

When it comes to great food in a relaxing atmosphere, recently opened Ginger Monkey (GM) isn’t monkeying around. Doug
Collins and Jackson Armstrong made the leap and opened GM this past October after talking about it periodically during their 15-year friendship. During that time, each of them worked in some aspect of the restaurant industry. With Jackson’s nickname being Ginger, and Doug’s being Monkey for his playful personality, it only seemed fitting they’d name their first restaurant accordingly.
From both of their collective restaurant experiences, they implemented a well thought-out plan, doing most of the build-out themselves, including
No AroundMonkeyingthe unique bathrooms. GM offers a kids’ area, a dog friendly patio, a game area, 30 televisions, an open dining area, comfortable large booths, and oversized patio areas with fire tables. Not to mention the 30 beers on tap and the impressive wine list. They also have a wonderfully creative chef turning out delicious dishes that will please all types of palates.
“Ginger Monkey has something for everyone, whether its a fam-ily coming in for dinner, the gals getting together to watch The Bachelor, sport enthusiasts wanting to enjoy a game, profession-als stopping in for Monkey Hour, or foodies enjoying the diverse menu,” explains Jackson.

CASUAL GOURMET
Offering a casual atmosphere with upscale menu items at affordable prices, I was pleasantly surprised at the selection and delicious dishes. For starters, I sam-pled the pesto deviled eggs with pancetta bacon, which are incredibly good. The Chianti braised short ribs with spinach asiago sun dried tomato risotto was also deli-cious, and I thoroughly enjoyed the crab cake, which was extremely moist. Also be sure to stop in on Taco Tuesday to enjoy some tasty tacos like the spicy buffalo chicken taco and the short rib taco.
Chef Meghan Knowles is the perfect complement for GM’s team, having graduated in 1999 from Scottsdale Culinary Institute before going on to work at Roy’s in Hawaii and, later, T. Cook’s in Scottsdale. She’s extremely talented and creates amazing cuisine that will have you returning for more.
“We want to serve different types of food that stand out from what is normally found,” shares Chef Meghan. “All our items are made from scratch.”
Save room for dessert, as you won’t want to miss indulg-ing in their Ultimate Chocolate Chip Cookie n’Oreo Fudge Brownie Bar with vanilla bean ice cream. Scrumptious! Or, if you are not into chocolate, other options include heav-enly lace cannolis, a key lime tart, three cheesecakes and an apple fritter monkey bread, just to name a few.
A PLACE FOR ALL
Furry friends are welcome, with a patio all their own, and Elway’s drinking fountain (named after Jackson’s French bulldog). The K9 dog menu offers a Pup Patty of ground meat and rice; the Hambarker Helper with ground beef, gravy and veggies; Salmon with rice and veggies; and the Bark Bowl that has scrambled eggs with chicken and beef.
Doug sums it up nicely stating, “We want to be the place where people can come together and celebrate good times and share their tough times. GM is a place everyone is wel-come, whether it’s to enjoy a flatbread pizza or steak in the bar or out on the patio, watch a game, or enjoy brunch on the weekends, we have something for everyone.”

T H E Memory M A K E R GLORIA NEWMAN CREATES LASTING IMPRESSIONS WITH HER ONE-OF-A-KIND CASTS
ARTICLE GLORIA NEWMAN
Local Limelight
Making beautiful and memorable keepsakes for expecting women, newborns and families is the most rewarding job a
person could ever ask for; it is truly a gift from God! When I first started, I knew nothing about sculpting, but there was a voice telling me that I was supposed to be doing something greater during my 20-year career at the Hewlett-Packard Company. During my career, I became a certified massage therapist, something I had always wanted to do, and I set aside time on weekends and evenings to perform therapeutic and pregnancy massages. One day, while mas-saging one of my pregnant friends, I said, “if only I could make a sculpture of your pregnant body,” and she said, “do it!”
After that day, my life changed forever. Little did I know that everything I needed to attain this gift was already lined up for me, and within a month I entered into the wonderful world of sculpting! I am self-taught but am always seeking knowledge and learning as much as I can to create beautiful and unique sculp-tures. And it’s really true—pregnant women do glow, as it’s such a precious time in their lives!
I cast pregnant women in their third trimester and appointments usually take 45 minutes. Clients are cast with their undergarments on and adult family members or friends are always welcome to par-ticipate and take photos. My specialty is “preserving” belly casts to last for generations, so they are coated on both the front and back
sides with my own products to give the molds a sturdy and beau-tiful finish. After the cast is removed from my client, it will dry for 24 hours before the trimming and preservation process begins, which takes two to three weeks to complete. Each piece is painted and decorated to complement my client’s nursery décor, and I always encourage them to bring fabric and paint swatches and incorporate their own ideas if they want. I offer several pose options to choose from: front torso, side profile or just the belly, and have several price packages that will accommodate everyone’s budget.
Newborns are best cast at one to two weeks of age. I can life-cast their hands and feet at this time, which is done with alginate and shows all the details of the human body (best if they are sleeping or nursing), or do foot and hand impressions that are quick and easy at any age. I can also cast their little bums at two weeks of age.
Adult castings include family hand wreaths, couple’s hand cast-ings, breast cancer sculptures for women wanting to remember their God given breasts prior to their mastectomy, adult body parts, lips, and pet paw or hoof castings.
After 20 years of casting, I am so grateful for all the won-derful families I have met on this journey! If you or your family would like a memorable keepsake, please keep me in mind, house calls are available and gift certif icates as well. BelliesAndBums.BlogSpot.com
