The Rite WayThe Arc of San Diego received a $2,500 grant from The Rite Aid Foundation to support Camp-A-Little, our annual weeklong residential summer camp for children with disabilities ages 5-17. We thank Rite Aid Foundation for their donation.

“Rite Aid is committed to ensuring children with disabilities are able to have opportunities to participate in recreational activities despite any challenges they are facing. We are proud to support the wonderful work The Arc of San Diego does in the community,” said Gayle Rife, manager of The Rite Aid Foundation.

Camp-A-Little offers a traditional summer camp experience with extra care and attention. If you would like to know more about Camp-A-Little, call Lin Taylor, (619) 685-1175, ext. 255 or email [email protected].

Nationally recognized as Disability Awareness Month, March gives us the opportunity

to celebrate the lives of people with developmental disabilities.

Danny Long, featured in this issue (pages 4-5), receives the support necessary for him to pursue his goals. Our Tailored Day Services program plays to his strengths as we take his skills, knowledge, and interests into consideration and customize services to meet his needs. Danny’s day combines work, school, and play as he successfully participates in his community.

The satisfaction that Danny’s parents, Tim and Patti Long, have with Tailored Day Services is a reflection of our 2014 Outcomes Measurement Evaluation where 96% of consumers and families express satisfaction with our programs while 98% of those receiving services report an improvement in their quality of life. We are proud of our longstanding commitment to improving the lives of people with disabilities.

While there are many ways you can assist us in making a difference by offering people with disabilities jobs and housing, volunteering, becoming a member, making a donation – we ask for your support of our signature fundraiser, The Jewels on Broadway. Join us on March 14th at The Grand Del Mar for a spectacular gala that celebrates the philanthropic contributions of prominent San Diegans and raises much needed funds.

Please support our efforts by becoming a sponsor of this event or donating an auction item. Visit our website, www.arc-sd.com/jewels, or call us at (619) 685-1175 to learn more. See you at The Grand Del Mar!

Tailored Day Services Option (TDSO) provides guidance and the structure to help young adults gain confidence and achieve personal goals as they consider their interests and make choices about post-secondary education, employment, housing, recreation and leisure, and community integration. Services are available through the San Diego Regional Center (15 hours per week) and private pay (no hour limit).

Seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, contact Melanie McCoy at (619) 685-1175, ext. 290 or [email protected].

There is never a dull moment for Danny Long. His days are filled with work, school, theater, dance, sports, church, and family.

At 25, Danny, with the strong support and encouragement of his family, has access to a variety of programs that accommodate his many interests. He participates in programs at The Arc of San Diego, Southwestern College, Arms Wide Open, Sports 4 Exceptional Athletes, San Diego Park & Recreation, Therapeutic Recreation Services, and YMCA.

His mother Patty finds that Tailored Day Services has given her son confidence, bringing him out of his shell as new experiences are found where he can be social and responsible. She is pleased that Danny is now able to initiate conversations and compliment people.

Danny has an avid interest in the performing arts and sports. He takes classes in swing, tap, contemporary, and hip hop and spends several hours at rehearsals. He also plays basketball, baseball, and soccer seasonally and bowls and swims year-round. Additionally, he is in a weightlifting class at Southwestern College.

Hobbies include journal writing, vocabulary and money exercises, listening to Michael Jackson and Taylor Swift, and writing notes and letters for all

Celebrating Danny! In honor of March, Disability Awareness Month, we are proud to feature Danny Long of Chula Vista. Danny receives Tailored Day Services Option through The Arc’s Starlight Center.

Twice a week, Amanda Pearman, Direct Support Professional with The Arc and Danny work on skill building, social interaction, and personal goals.

Danny’s love for theater led him to Arms Wide Open, a performing arts company in El Cajon, where he played Scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz and is currently John in Peter Pan.

Danny volunteers at the Naval Base Thrift Store where he sorts, cleans, organizes, tags, and hangs merchandise.

occasions to friends and family. He is a HUGE Disneyland fan and says, “My dream is to work at Disneyland. I wish I could draw maps for people and help them get around the park.”

Danny volunteers at the San Diego Thrift Store on the Naval Base, Bonita-Sunnvyside Library, YMCA, and Arms Wide Open, a theater company.

As a child of missionaries, Danny is a member of two churches, Primera Iglesia Bautista Mexicana de San Diego and First Baptist Church of Chula Vista, where he is an usher/greeter and part of the Sunday School class for young adults with disabilities. He often goes with church groups to Mexico on work projects.

Born in the Dominican Republic, Danny moved to Chula Vista when he was six years old. Well-traveled, he has been to Haiti, Mexico, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Belize, Honduras, Czech Republic, Austria, Canada and many U.S. states. He is excited to experience new foods, cultures, sights, and sounds. In the summer, he hopes to visit his sister and her family in Malawi, Africa!

Looking into the future, Danny wants to have a full time, paid position at the Naval Base. At the Bonita-Sunnyside Library, Danny cleans, polishes, and

reshelves books.

With the Independent Club, Danny enjoys social activities such as going to SeaWorld, San Diego Zoo, Disneyland, and game or movie nights.

Family time is absolutely the best! Danny has two sisters, one brother, five nieces and nephews, and will soon be uncle to a sixth!

On Tuesday afternoons, as a member of the Southwestern College student organization ABLE Club, Danny participates in advocacy discussions and helps plan events.

PROFILE:

Joye Blount

Joye Blount, one of honorary chairs of The Jewels of San Diego Gala, has been involved with The Arc of San Diego for seven years. She brings charm and leadership to our highly successful annual gala. Joye has earned many prestigious business and community awards and serves on multiple boards in

San Diego. She is Wealth Management Advisor/VP at U.S. Bank and has extensive experience in both finance and education.

How did you first get involved with The Arc of San Diego? My first introduction was through a dear friend and key fundraiser for The Arc, Phyllis Parrish. Her passion and dedication to the organization inspired me to thoroughly understand their mission and take an active role in raising awareness and creating advocacy for their unwavering commitment to persons with disabilities.

What interests you most about our organization? The Arc of San Diego is unique in providing a very specialized service to a very special audience. The range of services includes a diversity of opportunities, skill building, and job opportunities that create individual fulfillment and positive self-worth, maximizing one’s potential.

Why are you committed to The Arc’s mission? The Arc fills a tremendous void, and, without their support, our communities would suffer and individuals with disabilities would never achieve their life goals.

Why does this cause matter to you?Because people matter. We are all God’s children and we have a moral and social responsibility to care and make a difference.

What do you enjoy most about working with The Arc of San Diego? There are a multitude of reasons, but one highlight is having the privilege to work with The Arc’s Leadership Team and their staff who are truly passionate about their roles and the mission of the organization. While challenges can be many, they are always planning strategically to avoid any negative impact to the individuals they serve and to provide true quality of life.

What helps you select the charities you support? My husband and I tend to support charities that are related to arts and culture, education, and the military. We always consider the leadership and financial strength of an organization, the need, and, of course, the mission.

Burlington Gives BackOn November 21, 2014, Burlington opened its fifth store in El Cerrito, San Diego, and at its Grand Opening Ceremony, donated 80 boxes of new merchandise and assorted products to The Arc of San Diego. Items were distributed to consumers in Independent Living Services, Residential Services, Respite, Tailored Day Services, and Parent/Infant programs. Additionally, consumers were beneficiaries of the retailer’s annual Warm Coats & Warm Hearts Coat Drive.

The Arc of San Diego thanks Burlington and its nonprofit partner, K.I.D.S./Fashion Delivers, for their generous donation.

The Arc of San Diego thanks Virginia DeBoer for her donation of $10,000 in memory of her husband, Dr. Harland DeBoer, to support Arc North County. Dr. DeBoer was a member of the North County Chapter Advisory Board, The Arc of San Diego Board of Directors, and Arc San Diego Foundation. Accepting the check was President & CEO David W. Schneider.

Nine consumers had a fun, six day vacation in Waikiki, Hawaii, courtesy of The Arc’s Personal & Leisure Services program. There was plenty to do from strolling on the beach and going to a luau to visiting the Polynesian Cultural Center and Kualoa Regional Park. Hawaii is a favorite vacation choice; other destinations include Alaska, Cabo San Lucas, New York, Canada, and many California attractions. For more information, visit www.arc-sd.com/pals.

On March 2, 1959, under the patronage of the El Cajon Junior Women's Club, Sunbeam Center opened in the small guest house of teacher, Helen Beem, with six pre-school children. Sixteen months later, a Board of Directors was formed and the decision made to become the third chapter of The Arc of San Diego, East County Chapter.

Sunbeam changed its name to Angels Unaware after the best-selling book by Dale Evans and, in March 1962, after six temporary homes, the East County Chapter Advisory Board purchased a permanent home at 1374 East Lexington Avenue. Responding to changing times, in 1980, the Center was renamed East County Training Center. In 1982, the Board purchased a warehouse in Gillespie Field industrial park to meet the need for vocational education and rapid enrollment.

Over the past 50 years, there were many board members whose ideas, energy, and vision were responsible for the success of ECTC. They were fully engaged and gave freely of their time and talent - always with the goal of making the Center a better place for people with disabilities.

In recent years, the Advisory Board extended its scope to include oversight of five residential homes and respite services. Taking a “hands-on” approach, the group focused on updating and improving functionality of facilities and expanding outreach to the community. With the

goal of having consumers age in home for as long as possible, they put in place extensive improvements that took into consideration physical design, accessibility, and licensing requirements. This project, completed in

January, took 2½ years, with satisfying results.

Looking ahead, the board has several thoughtful initiatives. Consumer satisfaction and staff appreciation ranks high on their list, as does working with the Ladies Auxiliary, Angel LARCs. Their belief, One Arc, One Vision resonates with all members.

The East County Chapter Advisory Board meets on the first Wednesday of each month at 6 p.m. at 1374 East Lexington Avenue in El Cajon. If you or someone you know is interested in joining the Board, please contact Chris Shilling, Area Director, at (619) 444-9417.

OurBoardGregg Shallan, CFP, MBA, ChFCMember-At-Large

Gregg Shallan joined the board of directors in 2011 and is chair of the Investment Committee that oversees management of investment objectives and analyzes reports to ensure compliance with fiduciary standards. His goal for this year is to help The Arc of San Diego grow its board and donor base.

As First Vice President of Investments at Wells Fargo Bank in La Jolla, Gregg brings strong financial analysis and banking background to the board. He is a retired United States Navy Commander with over 20 years of service.

“I like doing what I can to contribute. Being able to accomplish something with a team of people that is greater than one’s self - that’s a great feeling!”

A “friend of a friend” introduced Gregg to The Arc and he soon found himself committed to its mission. Empowering people to achieve their life goals complemented his belief that “teaching a man to fish does more than giving him a fish for a day.” Gregg also had deep apprehensions about the lack of resources for children with disabilities when they grow up and was pleased to learn that The Arc offers timely, comprehensive, and effective services.

Gregg graduated from Denison University with a BS in Marine Biology and earned an MBA in International Business from Webster University. Originally from Pittsburgh, he moved to Coronado in 1997 and has lived in Chula Vista since 2001. Gregg and his wife Katherine have two young daughters and one dog, Champ, a white Lab. The family enjoys going to Julian and Hawaii.

Going For The Green! The 22nd annual Arc San Diego Foundation Invitational Holiday Golf Tournament, held at The Santaluz Club on December 8, 2014, was a great success. Around 125 golfers took to the links under perfect weather conditions.

Following an enjoyable day of golf, players and guests sat back, relaxed, and enjoyed the awards reception and silent and live auctions. Morning & Jim Nichols and Alliant Specialty Insurance Services, Inc. received The Jon R. Kurtin Lifetime Legend Award for their longtime support and commitment to the tournament.

Thanks to all the sponsors, players, and volunteers, this fun and successful tournament raised $121,000. Proceeds were used to purchase holiday gifts for children and adults with disabilities and support Our Place Yoga & Wellness Center, a program that provides yoga and adaptive fitness training at North Shores Vocational Center.

Jon Kurtin, Arc San Diego Foundation board member, spearheaded the drive to host a golf tournament in 1993 when he realized that many consumers did not receive holiday gifts. Jon rallied friends and fellow golf enthusiasts to play and raise funds, ensuring consumers would receive a holiday gift.

At The Arc of San Diego, we are appreciative to Jon, Linda, Berni, & Hannah Kurtin, Lenny Ignelzi, Kat Sciacca, Jim Sullivan, and Dennis Paulson for their dedication and generosity.
