Ambassadors Fine Tune Operations in 2016!Ambassadors ensure that members

understand and take advantage of the benefits of Chamber membership. To support this effort, we have been working hard to create ways to fine tune our outreach to members. In September of 2015, we launched the “One Member at a Time Initiative,” which brought more focus to our process. This helped improve the quality of our conversations, and more importantly the feedback we received.

In September of 2016, we enhanced our process even further with the Dover Chamber Ambassador ARM program. Our 25 Ambassadors are now assigned into one of three teams that will strategically support a member’s experience at key moments in their membership. From exploring ways to grow the membership, to ensuring new members have a successful first year, this new initiative is designed to Attain, Retain and Maintain members.

Our goal is for the outreach process to be seamless, for every member to know what is happening and to always have someone to reach out to. We’re excited to see this new program improve our outreach to the membership and ensure an excellent experience for all Chamber members.

Dover Chamber helps members build their brands

The Chamber’s 5th Annual Small Business Series was held at the Wentworth-Douglass Hospital Conference Center and Hampton Inn this fall. Twenty local small business and nonprofit leaders participated in all three sessions, sponsored by Eastern Bank, and learned how to build a branding and marketing strategy to meet specific goals.

“Going into our fifth year, it was important that we produced a program that responds directly to what we are hearing is a challenge – developing a brand that attracts and retains loyal customers and employees,” said Executive Director Molly Hodgson, “By bringing in branding and marketing professionals who are passionate about helping local businesses and nonprofits succeed, we can help participants get strategic and move forward with their brands.”

The first two sessions were led by Bridget Sprague and Heidi Bellamente of the Hell Yeah Company. Participants learned what a brand strategy can do for their business and built a foundation to build their own strategy. The final session taught participants how to fully execute their strategy. Participants heard from branding and marketing consultants on what channels, content and conversion tactics to use for results. Panelists were Beverly Hodsdon of Joyce Design Solutions, Heidi Mitrushi and Kelly Kilgallon of Tap House Media, and Eric Sessler of Eastern Marketing Services.

Popzup wins grand prize in Start Up NH 2016 pitch competition

Popzup, who joined the Dover Chamber in 2016, pioneers healthy popcorn options like their chemical and plastic free patented Popzup Popper microwave popcorn. On November 2nd at the 2016 Seacoast Start Up NH competition, they took home the first prize which was $30,000 in cash and in-kind awards. Popzup was one of five finalists who presented a Shark Tank style pitch to 3 judges and a public forum.

Co-founders Julie and Marty Lapham started the business an alternative to conventional microwavable popcorn, which Julie describes as containing toxic chemicals. Their inspiration came when Julie’s mother was diagnosed with diabetes and struggled with weight. She turned to microwave popcorn as a snack she could eat to help her loose weight and she began to make it everyday. “Popcorn is a whole grain, low calorie and low fat snack that is perfect for people struggling with weight. We were frustrated that this super snack had become so unhealthy and wanted to fix this serious problem,” said Julie.

Marty Lapham has 40 years experience as a brand strategist for leading institutions in healthcare, academia and business. Julie has 25 years experience in the specialty food industry in product R&D and national sales. “We love our new life and are proud of our Popzup Factory, where we produce all our Popzup Popcorn Products with TLC, and with the help of 3 employees from Community Partners, a local non-profit helping persons with disabilities,” said Marty.

Julie and Marty produce several healthy option popcorn products in their Dover Popzup Factory and are sold in many stores throughout New England. To learn more about the Popzup check out www.popzup.com.

Seacoast Start-Up 2016 is organized by the Rochester Department of Community & Economic Development and the Alpha Loft. Bank of New Hampshire is the presenting sponsor. Other sponsors include Great Bay Community College; Albany International; Lydall; Bernier Insurance and Agagnost Companies. Dumont Property Group, iHeart Media and Epiphany Consulting were the in-kind sponsors.

Marty and Julie Lapham, center, hold the grand prize check of $10,000 at the 2016 Seacoast Start Up NH competition.

MEMBER NEWSGundalow Arrives in DoverBy Ron Cole, Foster’s Daily Democrat

Dover residents traveled back 200 years on the Cocheco River Thursday afternoon on a very appropriate vehicle, a gundalow.

Many of the 50 passengers called the weather and experience “awesome” as they traveled aboard the gundalow “Piscataqua.” They were acquainted with the lore of the river by Captain George Maglaras of Dover, noted historian and caretaker of the waterway.

Sponsored by the Greater Dover Chamber of Commerce and the Woodman Museum as part of its 100th anniversary, the gundalow had traveled up the river to Dover from its usual berth in Portsmouth.

A gundalow is a flat-bottom boat that was the 17th to 19th century equivalent of today’s tractor-trailer trucks. During that period, hundreds of them traveled back and forth throughout the Seacoast area moving cargo between ships and land.

The Piscataqua is owned by the Gundalow Company. As it headed downriver, Maglaras expounded on all that was related to the river going back several hundred years.

As the 70-foot boat glided on the glassy waters, all had an opportunity to enjoy snacks from Mezzanine Catering of Dover, which were provided by the Greater Dover Chamber of Commerce. The libations came from 7th Settlement Brewery.

Great Bay Community College, Amadeus Enjoy RelationshipBy Paul Briand, Foster’s Daily Democrat

Great Bay Community College (GBCC) is well known for its relationships with manufacturers in the region. It is a case of supply and demand: The college has a supply of qualified students, the manufacturers demand qualified workers to fill their jobs.

Amadeus, at 75 New Hampshire Ave. at Pease International Tradeport, advises the community college down the road at 320 Corporate Drive about what it needs to fill positions in providing technology solutions to the hospitality industry. The community college, in turn, trains its students, particularly those in its Information Systems Technology program, for jobs at Amadeus.

GBCC is well regarded in the state for its ability to recognize the needs of employers, then, with the advice of those employers, train students with skills specific to certain jobs.

How you like them apples?

October 1st marked the 32nd celebration of Apple Harvest Day, the Seacoast’s largest fall Festival underwritten by Federal Savings Bank. 2016 was just as successful as years passed featuring over 300 vendors, 6 stages of entertainment, numerous family friendly activities and a 5K road race underwritten by Seacoast Orthopedics and Sports Medicine. In total, this year’s event spanned nearly eight blocks, including large sections of Central Avenue, Henry Law Ave, First, Second and Third Street, as well as Henry Law Park, Orchard Street and the McConnell Center on Locust Street. Critical to this year’s success, as always, were the volunteers and sponsors who all deserve a gracious thank you from the Chamber. You all make the Festival a success and enjoyable for all.
