2015/2016 NO. 4 A Publication of the Scottish Terrier Club of California November 2015 Several of our STCC members attended the 2015 STCA National Specialty Show in Montgomery County. To those that exhibited we are mighty proud of each of you, whether you were in the winning ribbons or not you represented the West Coast nicely. Special congratulations to those members that had wins and placements with their dogs over this most prestigious terrier weekend. Also, a "Thank you" to Sueannette Maniscalco for representing the STCC at the STCA Regional Delegate Meeting. The next National Specialty Show will be the Rotating in April 2016 in Baltimore, MD. A Fall Puppy Match report should be included in this Bulletin. Many thanks to Carol Joans for chairing the event and to all the volunteers - - we simply cannot thank you enough. The weather was horribly hot the day of the match, which was unfortunate for dogs and their humans. Wish we could put in an order for fair and mild weather but despite the elements, the match was successful and we had fun doing it. Rod Ott, Specialty Show Chair for 2016 will be fine-tuning the show committees and should have more details soon regarding the new venue and show weekend format. If you haven't committed and signed up for a job over that weekend, please consider contacting Rod and seeing what he might need help with. Please "Save The Date" of Saturday, December 19, 2015 for our STCC Holiday Party in the home of Ted & Hilda Miyamura. Everyone is welcome to attend and share in the great Scottie spirit of ringing in a new year. In closing, I would like to take the opportunity to thank Paul LaFontaine for his past service on the STCC Board and wish him and Lynda much happiness in Washington State. With Paul's resignation from the Board, we are delighted to welcome Bill McGinnis to fill that vacancy. So it's a good luck and best wishes to Paul and Lynda, and a hearty welcome onboard to Bill. Our next STCC General Meeting is scheduled for Saturday, November 14, 2015 at Du-Par's Restaurant & Bakery in Pasadena. I hope to see many of you there and please do remember that we will vote at this meeting on a Specialty Show judge for 2018. Linda FALL PUPPY MATCH! HOT! HOT! HOT!! The club AKC Sanction B “Puppy” match was September 20, 2015 at Palm View Park, West Covina. There were 9 puppies in conformation, 3 doggies in the Parade of Champions, and 2 in the Costume Parade. The Scottish Terrier Club of America Health Trust Fund (STCA/HTF) is once again doing a Scottish Terrier health and wellness survey. The STCA/HTF use the information to see where to concentrate efforts in both education and research. Breeders/Owners past and present are encouraged to participate in the study. The survey consists of three sections:

The Owner/Breeder Survey is for everyone to complete whether or not

you currently own a Scottish Terrier. This covers all information on you and the Scotties you have ever owned.

The Health and Disease Survey is for Scotties that you currently own or have lived with you during the past two years.

The Litter Survey is for the breeders and will address information on the litters that you have produced in your lifetime, whether or not you are still actively breeding.

The survey is online OR you can down load the survey from the web site OR be

sent a hardcopy. The survey is available until Dec 31 2015. You are encouraged to complete it sooner though. Go to www.stca.biz. There is a link on the right side of the home page. Or use this link here (between the “ ”’s) “http://mcvansoftware.com/joomla34/index.php/proposed-stca-2015-health-survey” . Summer's over, but you'd never know it as I sit here typing and it is in the mid-90's outside. No doubt, in another month or two I'll be writing about the relentless rains if the weather forecasters' El Niño predictions of 90 to 95 percent are accurate. My own Angus, who is seven and Shannon who is almost twelve, really don't want to set foot in the yard in this kind of heat, but if they see me pick up a leash they are game for it, heat or not. Actually, their summer daily walks are between 5 and 7 AM, winter and summer and all of our rescued Scotties get their walks in the early AM, too. Last month I wrote about two Scottie's that landed in the same San Diego County shelter two weeks apart. One, a young male Scottie whose owner had been arrested and was in jail, was just hours away from our scheduled bailout time, when we got a call from the shelter adoption coordinator saying that his owner had just come in and reclaimed him after bailing himself out of the County jail. We had a home all lined up for this little guy and a lot of great people were involved with coordinating our bringing him into our adoption program, including STCC member Mark LaBonte and our regular Scottie Rescue team members in San Diego, Sev and Julia MacPete. We are still awaiting a refund check of the shelter bailout fee, however, it is always heartwarming when a Scottie gets to remain with the person who he has known all his life. The other Scottie, an eight-month-old little girl, came to us thanks to Sev and Julia's help. She'd been a "lost" dog that no one reclaimed. Imagine someone not reclaiming a Scottie puppy! Sev and Julia were able to visit with her after they paid her bailout fee. Sev told me that she was a real little spitfire, dashing madly after a thrown tennis ball and leaping high in the air to try and catch it before it bounced.

did not show any aggression, either to his new mom and dad or to her new b r o t h e r , Thor. As you can imagine, I w a s walking on air!

From the most recent email: "It is so fun to watch Piper. This morning she and Thor were playing in the backyard chasing each other. He looks so happy to have another Scottie to play with. She has fallen in love with our grandson, Trevor, too, and when he comes over she gets so excited ... "You would have laughed at her last night, Carol. When I took them for their walk the neighbor's sprinklers suddenly came on as we passed by and she was biting at them and didn't care that she was getting all wet. Thor just stood there and watched her, like are you crazy getting all wet? I've never had a Scottie who wanted to get wet. She is really a fun dog! We love her." SPECIAL THANK YOUS to: Alex and Heather Chang; Mark LaBonte; Sev and Julia MacPete. Your generous donations are so much appreciated.

"If we didn't already have our two Scotties and two cats, we'd take her in a heartbeat. We are so tempted," he said. Their Petey and Duffy are from our Rescue Program. We had a great home all picked out for her but that all went out the window once she'd spent her first 24 hours here. "Spitfire" is putting it mildly to describe Piper's temperament towards people we encountered on our twice daily walks and also towards my own two Scotties ... whenever she'd catch a glimpse of them through a screen door or window. My vet couldn't examine her until I left the room, when she calmed down considerably, he said. She was growling and barking at him as she sat on my lap. We couldn't even talk to each other with her aggressive behavior. We don't see many Scotties under a year old in Rescue, but the ones we have had in the past, never have had her type of behavior. With me, one on one, she was a little angel, however. I knew I needed to do much more than just taking her through a basic obedience class, which I do with some rescued Scotties with issues, but her issues really troubled me. I'd heard much positive praise about a training facility called K9's Only, with locations in both West Los Angeles and Tarzana. They specialize in dog's with difficult behavior issues. Piper underwent a two hour evaluation that I observed, after which I decided to enroll her for a month. They worked wonders with her and after just two weeks I brought her home to continue socializing and training her. Three weeks ago Piper was adopted by a couple in Tustin who had also adopted their four-year-old Scottie, Thor, from us in 2013. I did a slow introduction, first to the couple and then to Thor. Believe it or not Piper
