BEING MORTAL documentary film presented by
Bluegrass Care Navigators
January 22 at 10 a.m.
This film sheds light on how a medical system focused on a cure often leaves out the sensitive conversations that need to happen so patients’ true wishes can be known and honored at the end of life. “Being Mortal” underscored the importance of planning ahead and talking with family members about end-of-life decisions. Seventy percent of Americans say they would prefer to die at home, but nearly 70% die in hospitals and institutions. Ninety percent of Americans know they should have conversations about end-of-life care, yet only 30% have done so.
For more information about the film, visit pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/being-mortal
Samantha Voss, a Social Work student at UK, will be joining us for the spring semester starting in January. She is from Lexington and went to Transylvania for her undergraduate degree. She went on to get her Masters in Elementary Education and taught for three years. Samantha says that she’s always wanted to pursue social work and is excited to have the opportunity! This is Samantha’s first semester in the Master’s Degree program and she plans to graduate in the spring of 2020. Her plans are to get involved with counseling to some degree but she’s not sure the exact direction these next semesters will take her. Samantha is close to her parents who live in town. She also has two older brothers. She somehow finds time to work part-time at Athleta (women's athletic clothing store). Samantha enjoys playing sports, being active and exercising. She loves getting the chance to travel and try new things. She also loves to read, write, and try to be creative with painting or photography.
Hereditary Cancer Screening:
Know Your Risk
Jan. 14, 1 – 5 p.m. Jan. 15, 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. Jan. 18, 8 a.m. – noon
The screening identifies a person’s genetic risk of developing primary inherited cancers over their lifetime.
With family history, your physician can use test results to help assess your cancer risk.
Carolyn’s Corner Book Club
The Book Club will not meet in January.
Beginning in February, the Book Club will meet only on the first Thursday of each
month from 9:30 – 11 a.m.
In honor of Black History Month, the book club will be reading Hidden Figures: The Untold True Story of Four African-American Women Who Helped Launch Our Nation into Space by Margot Lee Shetterly. Set against the backdrop of the Jim Crow South and the civil rights movement, this never-before-told true story of NASA’s African-American female mathematicians tells of their crucial role in America’s space program—and their contributions have been unheralded, until this book. Before John Glenn orbited the Earth or Neil Armstrong walked on the moon, a group of professionals worked as “Human Computers,” calculating the flight paths that would enable these historic achievements. Among these was a small group of bright, talented African-American women. Segregated from their white counterparts by Jim Crow laws, these “colored computers,” as they were known, used slide rules, adding machines, and pencil and paper to support America’s fledgling aeronautics industry, and helped write the equations that would launch rockets, and astronauts, into space. Drawing on the oral histories of scores of these “computers,” personal recollections, interviews with NASA executives and engineers, archival documents, correspondence, and reporting from the era, Hidden Figures recalls America’s greatest adventure and NASA’s groundbreaking successes through the experiences of five spunky, courageous, intelligent, determined, and patriotic women: Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson, Katherine Johnson, Christine Darden, and Gloria Champine. Moving from World War II through NASA’s golden age, touching on the civil rights era, the Space Race, the Cold War, and the women’s rights movement, Hidden Figures interweaves a rich history of scientific achievement and technological innovation with the intimate stories of five women whose work forever changed the world—and whose lives show how out of one of America’s most painful histories came one of its proudest moments.
