Pastor’s Corner

Dear Friends in Christ,

“Ernest Warburton Shurtleff graduated from Andover

Theological Seminary. 'Lead on, O King Eternal' was

written for the Andover graduation ceremonies..." (From

Hymnal Companion of the Lutheran Book of Worship.)

This hymn has closed worship for every congregation I

have served on the last weekend that I was their

pastor. It has a military sounding tune, but it has

sustained me and encouraged me in grace and faith as

was its intention, per the citation above.

Jeremy chose that hymn, I am sure, because he knows

how much it means to me and I am grateful.

In fact, that's really what I want to say in this last

"Pastor's Corner."

I am really, REALLY grateful.

Prince of Peace has a stellar staff and a strong Council,

both leading an extremely healthy church.

To ALL of you, thank you. It has been my pleasure to

serve with you.

Your notes and words and gifts (including one that came

anonymously on Pastor's Appreciation Sunday) are joyfully

received. Thank you for sharing them.

What's next? I leave Friday morning, November 1, for

Burlington, Iowa where I will preach for my "job" from

which I took a leave of absence, Food for the Poor

(foodforthepoor.org) Then on Monday I will be home in

Houston, prepared to do my weekday work of assisting at

a local funeral home. In the spring, I will be doing a

capital campaign for a church in Tucson, Arizona.

So things keep moving...and I am grateful...to you, and

especially to the 3-in-1 God who loves us so very much.

Remember GIGATT and ATTGIG.

"Lead on, O God of might!"

Love y'all,

Rick Hartmann, Interim Pastor for a few more hours...

October 2019

Dear Members of Prince of Peace,

Our collective response to the love and grace we’ve been shown in Christ Jesus has resulted in the vitality and a real

sense of mission at Prince of Peace. As we plan and look forward to 2020, we have an opportunity to further expand

the mission we all share. Our congregation consistently demonstrates the power of strong faith and shared love.

To continually press forward, we are conducting the “God’s 20/20 Vision” stewardship program for financial and partici-

pation support in 2020. We need your involvement and commitment to enable us to continue to expand the mission

programs of the congregation.

“God’s 20/20 Vision” stewardship program will kick off this week with the distribution of “God’s 20/20 Vision” packet

for each family or person. The packets will be available at church for the next few weeks.

Make a point of picking your stewardship packet up while at church for worship or anytime.

The information in the packet should is self-explanatory. However, if you have questions you can contact Jim Hoyt at

[email protected] or 614.917.3493.

We are asking that the 2020 Estimate of Giving cards be returned via the offering on

Christ the King weekend, which is November 23 and 24. Cards can be returned earlier to the church office as well.

Thank you of your support of Prince of Peace and the mission we all share.

With thanksgiving,

Jim Hoyt, Andy Prakel

2 cans of corn

3 cans of green beans

Everyone else is asked to donate dessert items:

Where Do You Fit?

Using your gifts for ministry

Do you have the gift of hospitality?

Do you enjoy cooking?

Perhaps you would like

to join one of our POP’s

Café breakfast ministry

groups.

Each team plans its

own menu, but the

grocery shopping

is done by the office staff during the week.

All you have

to do on Sunday morning is cook, serve, clean-up –

and enjoy the thanks of a grateful congregation!

The commitment is approximately 8:15 a.m. until

11:30 a.m. just four or five Sundays a year.

If you have questions, talk to one of the POP’s Café

helpers this weekend or contact Barb Hoyt in the office

The Benefits of Journaling

It is widely known that writing can be an important from of

self-reflection and spiritual therapy. Writing about one’s

thoughts and feelings can be therapeutic.

One of the main benefits of emotional expression is that it can

release pent-up emotional energy, and this can have positive

health effects for the writer. Keeping a journal can be a

mechanism for coping with daily frustrations and challenges.

Health Benefits

There is increasing evidence to support the notion that

journaling has a positive impact on physical well-being.

University of Texas at Austin psychologist and researcher James Pennebaker contends that regular journaling

strengthens immune cells. Pennebaker believes that writing about stressful events helps you come to terms with them,

thus reducing the impact of these stressors on your physical health.

Begin journaling and experience these benefits:

• Clarify thoughts and feelings. If you seem all jumbled up inside and unsure of what you want or feel, take a few

minutes to jot down your thoughts and emotions. It can bring you in touch with your inner self.

• Discover yourself. Write routinely, and you will get to know what makes you feel happy and confident. Writing will

help you see more clearly the situations and people who have a negative effect on you. These realizations are

beneficial to restoring emotional wellbeing.

• Reduce stress. Write about negative feelings, such as anger, sadness or other painful emotions. Writing may help

to release the intensity of these feelings. The goal is to free your mind of past hurts and to feel calmer and better

able to live in the present.

In addition to all of these wonderful benefits, keeping a journal allows you to track patterns, trends and improvements

over time. When current circumstances appear insurmountable, you will be able to look back on your writing and see

where you have made progress.

How to Begin

• Journaling will be most effective if you do it daily for about 20 minutes.

• Find a quiet place and relax. Spelling and punctuation are optional.

• Write quickly, as this frees your brain from the notion of an end goal for your writing.

• If it helps, pick a theme for the day or week, such as peace of mind, change or frustration.

The most important idea is that there are no rules.

• You may discover how your journal is an all-accepting, nonjudgmental tool for spiritual renewal and physical

wellbeing.

Prince of Peace Youth Direct KIVA Microloans to Worthwhile Small Businesses

Confirmation students had the wonderful opportunity to put their faith to good use during their recent classes. The

Global Missions group added $1000 to the Prince of Peace Youth Group KIVA account. Those funds are administered

solely by our middle and high school students.

During Confirmation class, the students learned about KIVA microloans and then divided into groups to make some

tough decisions…..Who needs the loans the most? How can our money be put to good use? How can we make a

difference in the life of someone we will probably never meet?

Here are some of the results of their decisions….and some pictures of the

process in action!

For more information on KIVA microloans and how YOU can start your own

basket, please check out www.kiva.org.

and Kindergartener

Information and packets are posted on the website under the Little Shepherds tab.

Contact Sue Miller with any questions at [email protected]

Prince of Peace has owned and operated a Christian-based part-time learning center each school year since 2001.

Bible lessons are taught in every classroom, at different levels of learning. Every class has a morning prayer,

snack prayer and goodbye prayer.

In November we will learn about families, friends and giving thanks for food. The preschool families are donating toward

the LSS Thanksgiving kits. To date we have collected 65 kits. Our goal is 100.

School will be closed the week of November 25 for Thanksgiving Break.

LSLC Board meeting is Tuesday, November 12 at 5:30 p.m. At this meeting we will

determine program offerings and fees for school year 2020-2021. Registration will begin in

December; information will posted on the website.

Share the Good News! We have a few openings left for this school year!

Sunday School, a Family Ministry

Sunday School is offered to age 3 through adult. We have a Sunday School Youth choir class

for 2nd through 5th graders. Confirmation classes for 6th, 7th & 8th grades, and High School

youth meetings on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of each month. Adults and high school youth are

also invited to attend Adult Sunday School. Register Online for Sunday School.

Each week your child may give a Sunday school offering to our service project, Grain of Rice, a Kenyan organization that

provides opportunities for kids to learn, to eat a meal, to be in a safe place. Our goal is $500 for this school year; to date

we have only collected about $100. This is a great way for children to learn how their gift of money can change people’s

lives. To learn more about this project, visit the Prince of Peace bookstore where items are for sale.

Beginning Sunday November 10, our Sunday school students will begin to practice for the upcoming Sunday School

Christmas program, which will be on Sunday, December 15 at 4:30 p.m.
