Giving Report for July 2014
At the end of August COA had operating revenues of $289,176.12 and expenses of $343,025.42 for a
negative cash flow of ($39,849.30).
Envelope and direct deposit income year to date was $247,930.07 which is less than the $267,741.19
collected at the same time last year.
Operating expenses are $18,510.84 above the same period last year.
Your support is greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your gifts to COA.
Stewardship Commission
Hopefully by now you have received a letter from our Stewardship Commission about this year’s campaign entitled “Be a Blessing,” which encourages each of us to consider how we have been blessed by God and how we may bless God and others through financial contributions to Church of the Apostles UCC. Your financial support not only provides the means to support our ministries, but is an indication of our level of faith as we take risks for the sake of the Gospel to create disciples. In an article I recently read about a school in Haiti, a child was not coming to school because he did not have any shoes to wear. One of the students in the school took off his own shoes and handed them to his classmate and said, “Here, you can wear mine for today. I will go barefoot for you.” One child blessing another with a well-worn pair of shoes – what a beautiful vision of stewardship! Giving up your shoes is not the risk we are looking at to create disciples, but we are looking at ways in which we can get our vision of “Sharing Christ’s Love with All People” to the greater community. We are talking about inviting others to “Join us on the journey”…as we seek to be God’s people - admitting that we worry too, but together our faith guides us. We are looking to attract others who care about our community – especially those who also want to “feed” others. We are looking to expand the opportunities we offer for spiritual and educational growth. We are looking at how we may nurture, grow and retain people of all ages. All of our ideas to grow the congregation and our impact on our larger community require your faithful giving. Without you, none of this is possible. Would you please prayerfully consider how you will

the fall sermons will be based on this book. Pastor Kuhn, along with the worship design team and the education commission, is considering offering follow-up discussions or reflections on the Sunday sermon themes on a Wednesday evening. OLD BUSINESS: Andy Appel asked council to be aware of the “unseen members” who do not regularly attend services. He would like council members to begin contacting these members to let them know we’ve been missing them and finding out how they are doing. PROPOSAL: Pastor Kuhn and the executive committee have sent council a proposal for an additional pastoral position. After discussing this proposal at length, Tom Lewis made a motion, with a second by Steve Daniels, that “By a consensus of council members, council should discuss with the congregation, in September, the creation of an additional pastoral position.” The motion passed unanimously. Pastor Kuhn will create a list of steps needed in the search process, including definitions of terminology. The council wants to know Pastor Kuhn’s wishes and her reasons for this proposal. CLOSING PRAYER: Pastor Kuhn led us in prayer asking God, “How can we be Your apostles to this community?” NEXT MEETING: September 22, 2014 at 7 PM Respectfully submitted by Cathie Oliphant, temporary
scribe

Council Minutes August 18, 2014
ATTENDANCE: Pastor Kathy Kuhn, Andy Appel, George Alsbach, Julie Berkow, Lisa Christoffel, Steve Daniels, Chuck Erisman, Cathy Kenlin, Tom Lewis, Jane Mc Cartney, Erika Niederer, Cathie Oliphant, Cindy Williams ABSENT: Clara Kosmela, Randy Sweigart DEVOTIONS: Andy Appel led us in a Bible quiz. APPROVAL OF MINUTES for July 21, 2014: Motion made to accept minutes made by George, 2nd by Jane with the following CORRECTIONS: Andy Smith was present and led devotions, Steve Daniels was present. Erika Neiderer’s name should be added to list of those who will be leaving council having fulfilled one three-year term. Jane’s last name should be spelled McCartney, and Cathie (no y). Minutes approved as corrected. COMMISSION REPORTS: Andy Appel wants all council members to have read the reports prior to the council meetings. They were delayed in being sent this month, however. COMMENTS: Cindy questioned the Parish Life report regarding disbursement of funds from the garage sale and bazaar. Erika said that nothing was decided yet; however, the disbursement of profits needs to be equal. Julie asked why there are plans to hold the 9:15 service in fellowship hall once a month. Pastor Kuhn explained that it is to create an environment conducive to conversation. She is planning on discussing the idea with attendees of the 9:15 service. If in agreement, this could possibly happen the end of September. Cindy thanked Pastor Kuhn for all the work she has done as reported in the Pastor’s Report. Andy Appel added, “We have one busy pastor!” PASTOR’S REPORT: Pastor Kuhn has been reading the book Who Stole My Church? which deals with change. The pastor is now reading To Begin at the Beginning by Martin Copenhaver, President-elect of Andover Newton Theological Seminary. Themes for

BLANKET SUNDAY
October 26th is Blanket Sunday. Church World Services (CWS) continues to change lives through generous contributions to the annual Blankets mission. Church of the Apostles
encourages members to use their special offering envelope entitled Blanket Sunday to donate generously on October 26th. Contributions are used not only to provide blankets for those in need, but also to offer emergency assistance, tools, clean water or whatever a community needs to become strong and self-sufficient. CWS also provides opportunities for education. For more information you can call (800) 297-1516 or visit the website cwsglobal.org/blanket order. Thank you for your attention to this very worthy cause.
FLU SHOT CLINIC
October 8 and 9 are the dates for the flu clinic at Church of the Apostles. Make a note on your calendar to stop by on the 8th from 6 to 9 or on the 9th from 1 to 4 to receive your flu shot for this winter. Bring all your insurance cards with you and the pharmacists from Rite Aid will take care of the paperwork. Enter through the lower door at the west lobby and someone will be there to greet you and walk you through the procedure. And don’t forget to sign up in the narthex or call the office so we will know how many people to expect on each of the days.
BELIEVING.............
As I write this column, the September weather can't be more satisfying: deep blue skies, a breeze from time to time, just warm enough in the afternoon you don't need the jacket. Really reminds me God IS in every place and at every time. As we move from summer to fall, the change of seasons is becoming apparent: a flight of geese the other day [flying west for some reason], acorns underfoot, the flood of leaves is a beginning trickle..... At Church of the Apostles, there's exciting news as well: so far this year, there have been 20 new members join our church family----and more are preparing to join! People are sharing with me their belief that our church "is going the right direction"...."building enthusiasm"...."more fulfilling".... Belief has so much to do with our future. If we believe in our mission---and ACCOMPLISHING that mission, even when circumstances appear to make the mission difficult [never say impossible], the strength of our belief makes success possible. A strong belief in our mission fuels our ability to see the goal and break down that goal into manageable objectives. Our belief allows us to seek out strategies to accomplish the objectives that will result in success. There is a mission before us: determine the benefit of an additional clergy position. In the upcoming weeks much will be shared about that concept. Meetings are scheduled for anyone who is interested, unsure or questioning. All opinions have value. Let's consider the manageable steps involved. I BELIEVE we have an opportunity that will generate enthusiasm for who we are and what we can accomplish. I BELIEVE our future is great----let's take the steps in our belief this will be done! Peace to you..............Andy Appel

On October 5th, the Neighbors in Need (NIN) offering will be received. Neighbors in Need is a special mission offering of the UCC that supports ministries of justice and compassion throughout the United States. One third of NIN funds support the council for American Indian Ministries (CAIM). CAIM provides Christian Ministry to American Indians and is their witness to the wider church. Two thirds of the offering is used by the UCC’s justice and witness ministries to support a variety of justice initiatives, advocacy efforts and direct service projects. There will be a specially marked envelope in the offering box. Please Give generously. Outreach Commission
Wishing Well Thank you to all of you who have already donated items for the Water Street Mission. We are continuing to support our local Water Street Mission Ministry through the month of October. The Water Street Mission is in need of personal care items such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, deodorants, and much more. If you have not already done so, please take a needed item (listed on a slip of paper) from one of the two posters. One poster is above the Wishing Well and the other is posted on the Outreach bulletin board in the Narthex. Please buy the item/items needed and return them to the Wishing Well by October 26th. Items will be taken to Water Street during the week of October 26th. Thank you so much for helping to support the needy people in our community through your generous giving! We can make a difference! Any questions? Please see Jane McCartney
Hempfield Area Meals on Wheels is seeking volunteers. They are seeking packers, drivers or visitors on a regular or substitute basis. If you have any questions or would like to help, please contact Barbara Good at 898-7532.
Stephen Ministry began in St.
Louis in 1978 with 14 people
attending the Stephen Leader
Training Course. This past July,
it celebrated its 200th Leader
Training Course. Over the
years, more than 65,000 clergy
and lay leaders have attended
an LTC. These Stephen Leaders
have returned home to train more than 600,000
members of their congregations as Stephen Ministers.
These lay caregivers in return have provided one-to-one
Christian care to millions of people experiencing difficult
times in their lives.
We at Church of Apostles are part of something
significant. Since we began our Stephen Ministry
program, we have had more than 20 people take the
course to become a Stephen Leader or Stephen Minister.
Times and situations change, and our numbers are now
in need of reinforcement. The need for Christian care
giving has not diminished; however, those available to
give the one-to-one care needs to be increased.
Please consider how you might be part of our Stephen
Ministry team. Training sessions will be available at
churches in our Lancaster County Leaders Network from
time to time. Talk with Pastor Kuhn, or Stephen Leaders
Joyce Baker and Cathie Oliphant about pursuing this
valuable training to help our congregation continue to
provide care to our members dealing with the difficult
situations life gives them.
May God give you wisdom to search your heart, and
courage to choose to get involved with Stephen
Ministry.

parents at our annual Visitation Days. For this school
year, we have 133 children in 10 classes, with 16
staff members.
As a reminder, the front parking lot of the church is
very congested daily from 8:50 – 9:10, as Preschool
parents use our car drop-off line. Please use
extreme caution when entering the parking lot
during that time. Also please remember that all the
church doors, with the exception of the main front
entrance, are locked from 9-12:30 when school is in
session for safety reasons. On Monday and
Wednesday doors will be locked until 2:30 to
accommodate our after school programs. If you
need to enter the building for any reason and you
have a key to open one of the locked doors, please
be sure to re-lock it. The safety of the children in our
care is of utmost importance. Thank you in advance
for your understanding.
It is also important that all church members wear
their nametags while in the building so that teachers
know you are not a stranger. Thank you.

Dear Rev. John and Cathie, Thank you for bringing me the church bulletin and the beautiful flowers. They lifted my spirits. Thank you for your prayers. Love, Marianne Deaner I want to thank COA for the yellow rose for my 92nd birthday and all who sent cards and well wishes. I miss my wife, friend, and best buddy not being able to share it with me. A brave lady, she knew and said, “It is in God’s Hands.” God rest her soul and she knew I loved her too. Thanks be to God Clyde Holbein Dear Pastor and Congregation, My husband and I want to thank you for the beautiful bouquet of flowers. They arrived just in time. We were married in 1948 at St. Paul’s and have warm memories of the day. Sincerely, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Herr Alison from The Loft wrote to say , “I would like Church of the Apostles to know their gift of produce is an incredible blessing. When we have fresh and healthy veggies, I get excited for others to splurge on these gifts. The first things to go are the familiar-corn, potatoes, tomatoes, and zucchini. I like that when a more “exotic” veggie is donated they include a recipe. Overall, the produce is a big hit and it’s exciting to have guests help themselves to the bounty. I appreciate the consistency of arriving to find the produce at our doorstep. Thanks!"

Not only providing a physical symbol of beauty during our worship, after the service they are given as a symbol of love and caring to a member of our community who is unable to be with us physically. The cost of our flowers and bulletins averages about $140.00 a week. Our suggested contribution for sponsoring flowers and bulletins is $35.00; however, any amount is welcomed and appreciated. If you would like to sponsor flowers, please fill out the form below and place it in the offering plate or send it into the office.
