March 5, 2017 First Sunday of Lent
By Maurice LaVoie
A Piece of Wood I have read somewhere, so it must be,
That only GOD can make a tree;
This puzzles me, and well it should,
For my question is, who now makes wood?
If GOD made a tree, does it naturally stand,
That GOD made wood, or was it made by man?
I do not question for knowledge itself,
For a piece of wood — I am myself.
I am a piece of wood, lying in a pile,
Other pieces are here — no one has a smile;
I'm worried for stories I've been handed,
That wood gets cut, sawed, and sanded.
I am only a piece of wood,
I'd like to remain that, if only I could;
It's not that I mind the saw or the plane,
What I fear the most is the pain.
Pain is needed that I may be shaped,
Into whatever the carpenter may make;
Leave me alone, knock off this stuff,
I'm a piece of wood — that's good enough!
Away from the pile I've been taken,
My entire world is totally shaken;
The man has taken me into his hand,
He's firm but gentle — I don't understand.

Maybe the stories I've heard are untrue,
Maybe there's no pain to the work he must do;
He looks like a nice and gentle man,
I'm sure he'll be gentle if he can.
The work has started — It's true, it hurts!
The pain is not constant, it comes in spurts;
The plane peels layers off my top,
It's very painful — I wish he'd stop.
The saw cuts deep into my being,
My dust hits the floor, what am I seeing!
He seems to understand, but the pain can't diminish
Until the work he has started, is finished.
He's sanding me now, boy that feels great!
Hey look at me, I'm starting to take shape;
I'm not sure what I am, but I don't care,
He's giving me tender loving care.
I can't explain it, but I know it's true,
I had to go through, what he had to do;
I wonder who he is, this carpenter man,
He changed me so — I don't understand.
Someone else is here, a relative I think,
They're talking now — very distinct;
Respect is deep in this carpenter man,
As he speaks to his father, while holding my hand.
“I worked very hard, I'm almost through,
Father, this one is Special; he's just for you.”
“Your love and truth shine bright in this one,
I'm pleased with you, Jesus, My Son.”
Maurice LaVoie, husband of parishioner Camille LaVoie
and father of Reverend Raymond LaVoie, died in 2005 at
the age of 59. His poems and essays continue to encourage
his family and friends. We are honored to include this poem
for Lenten reflection, as we respond to Monsignor King’s call
to deepen our relationship with God in this holy season.
40 DAYS FOR LIFE KICK OFF MASS - The 40 Days for Life kick off for the
Harrisburg chapter will be on Saturday March 11, at 5 pm here at Saint
Elizabeth Ann Seton Church. Reverend Paul C.B. Schenck, Respect Life
Director, will celebrate Mass and will follow with the timely presentation
of What Now? The Pro-Life Conscience in the Trump Years. Please contact
Kathy O'Donnell for additional information at [email protected].
PLEASE REMEMBER OUR CONFIRMANDI in your prayers as they conclude
their Confirmation preparations. Prayer cards are available in the back of the
church so that you can pray for a specific confirmand.
MORNING FAITH MATTERS JOIN US! On Wednesday, March 8, at 9:30 am in
the Bayley Conference Room, we continue our program, The Bible and the
Virgin Mary. Please jump in and join us; there’s no need to worry about
missing the previous sessions. In this week’s session, we’re going to discover
some new significance to the way that the angel Gabriel addresses Mother
Mary at the Annunciation. We’re also going to see more of why the
Immaculate Conception fits salvation history, and refute some of the common
objections to this dogma. Produced by the Saint Paul Center.
Questions? Please contact Mel Lee ([email protected]).
FREEDOM FROM OVEREATING, a new program here, meets again Tuesday,
March 7, at 7 pm in Room 3. Let the Love of Jesus guide us to make peace with
food, and with our bodies. Questions? Contact Elizabeth Smith (732-877-6905),
Peggy Gaizauskas (766-4078), or Donna Nebistinsky (697-6929).
THE LIFE IN THE SPIRIT PRAYER GROUP is offering a six-week
presentation—Thursday evenings through April 6—on Father Albert Haase's
amazing book, Catching Fire, Becoming Flame. With supplemental reading
suggestions and reflection questions, these eminently practical presentations
function like a personal spiritual retreat. Presentations are in the Bayley
Conference Room from 7 to 8:30 pm. All are welcome.
THE DIOCESAN MEN'S CONFERENCE is being held on April 1 at Bishop
McDevitt High School, Harrisburg. This has been an excellent event for the
men of our parish to attend. It is a time of inspiration, instruction, fellowship,
and spiritual growth. There are men at the doors of our church today handing
out registration brochures. Dr. Peter Kreeft, a prominent Catholic author and
speaker, is keynoting the conference. Bishop Gainer will be celebrating Mass
and presenting one of the 38 workshops. The day includes Adoration of the
Blessed Sacrament with Benediction and the praying of the Rosary during the
Holy Hour. Twenty-five priests will be hearing Confessions at various times
throughout the day. Food, good Catholic exhibits, and fellowship with men
throughout our Diocese and beyond. You will find more information in the
brochures you received today.
PARISH SHAWL MINISTRY This is a great opportunity to get involved in a
quiet ministry of service and prayer that benefits the newly baptized, those
suffering from illness, and those celebrating significant moments in their lives.
Come to the café on Thursday at 9:30 am to get acquainted!

BISHOP’S ANNUAL
LENTEN APPEAL
As you know, the Appeal is
a vital means of support for
diocesan work in
evangelization, education,
and a wide range of human
services. We are accepting
pledges after each Mass every weekend in March.
Please come to Menniti Hall after Mass and make
your pledge. If you have questions or would care
to help, please contact Bob Bagin (790-9601) or
Tim Danko (372-8565). PLEASE REMEMBER
THIS ONE IMPORTANT FACT—your pledge,
regardless of amount, makes a real difference in
our communities.
LATIN MASS On Sunday, March
19, the 11 AM Mass will be
celebrated in the Latin
language. A number of
parishioners have asked if we
could offer Mass in Latin,
especially after the Charismatic
Mass celebrated two weeks ago. The Mass will
be the ordinary form of the Mass, not the
extraordinary form or so-called "Tridentine"
Mass. The hymns will be the same as those used
during the other celebrations of the Mass that
Sunday. Only the prayers and acclamations will
be in Latin. Latin remains the official language
of the Church, and our daily offering of the Mass
in English is an approved official translation of
the normative Latin texts. For the Mass on
March 19, the priest will join the people in facing
East (ad orientem), which is an ancient and rich
symbol of facing the rising sun, the dawn of new
life which we celebrate in the Holy Sacrifice of
the Mass —the death and resurrection of Our
Divine Lord. Our church was designed so that
the congregation faces East—a very traditional
orientation in church architecture.
.
THE TRIBUNAL OF THE DIOCESE OF
HARRISBURG will be giving 2 presentations
within the diocese concerning marriage, divorce
and annulment according to Church teaching.
These presentations will be helpful for divorced
Catholics, those divorced who wish to marry
Catholics, those parish leaders involved in the
RICA process and any others who may have a
vested interest because of family or friends.
Dates are March 13 at the Cardinal Keeler
Center, Harrisburg, at 7 pm, and
March 14 at St. Joseph Parish, York, at 7 pm.
No prior registration required. Questions?
Contact the tribunal (657-4804, et. 304,
IN YOUR CHARITY, please pray for the
repose of the souls of Dorothy Kline,
