Ascension Thursday is not a Holy Day of Obligation in our Diocese. The celebration of the feast is transferred to the 7th Sunday of Easter, which is next Sunday, June 2.

POPE FRANCIS’ PRAYER INTENTIONS

The Holy Father asks for our prayers for a specific intention each month. You are invited to answer the Holy Father's request and to join with many people worldwide in praying for this intention each month. Occasionally the Holy Father may add a second prayer intention related to current events or urgent needs, like disaster relief.

The intention for June 2019 is the Mode of Life of Priests: That priests, through the modesty and humility of their lives, commit themselves actively to a solidarity with those who are most poor.

FAITH FORMATION REGISTRATION

All registration takes place during regular office hours. Please submit a copy of your child’s Baptismal certificate if he was not Baptized in our parish. Classes will begin on Sunday, September 8.

VALLEY OF OUR LADY MONASTERY FOR THE GLORY OF GOD

Valley of Our Lady Monastery, the home of the nuns who make the Altar Bread used at St. Mary and Christ the King, are conducting a capital campaign to build a new monastery.

In 1957, at the request of the bishop of the newly formed Diocese of Madison, six Cistercian sisters from Switzerland founded a new house of contemplative prayer in Wisconsin. The buildings in which the foundresses originally lived were a pioneer’s house onto which the former governor of Wisconsin had built his summer home. As the community grew, they added more wings, but the buildings were never meant to be a permanent monastery, and they are increasingly unsafe and unhealthy. They are subject to cont inuous and accelerat ing deterioration. Further repairs and renovations are unreasonably expensive and not financially prudent for the future, so they determined that the time had come to build a m o n a s t e r y w h o s e b e a u t y complements the beauty of the life.

Look for more information in the Nar thex including campaign information, prayer cards, prayer intention requests, and mailing envelopes if you would like to contribute to their campaign.

ENTRANCE DOOR CHANGE

In order to increase security during Mass, the door at St. Mary Church marked “Handicapped” is no longer an entrance and will be kept locked. You will still be able to exit through this door.

ST. RITA NOVENA

The St. Rita Novena is now prayed after Mass on Thursdays. Like Elizabeth Ann Seton, Rita of Cascia was a wife, mother, widow, and member of a religious community. Born at Roccaporena in central Italy, Rita wanted to become a nun but was pressured at a young age into marrying a harsh and cruel man. During her 18-year marriage, she bore and raised two sons. After her husband was killed in a brawl and her sons had died, Rita tried to join the Augustinian nuns in Cascia. Unsuccessful at first because she was a widow, Rita eventually succeeded. Over the years, her austerity, prayerfulness, and charity became legendary. When she developed wounds on her forehead, people quickly associated them with the wounds from Christ’s crown of thorns. She meditated frequently on Christ’s passion. Her care for the sick nuns was especially loving. She also counseled lay people who came to her monastery. Beatified in 1626, Rita was not canonized until 1900. She has acquired the reputation, together with Saint Jude, as a saint of impossible cases.
