The technology availabletoday has vastly changed thesenario of access & control tonetworks, specially so for thefinancial sector where security, uptime and scalability are crucial tothe viability of the organisation.We identified the following areasof concern in DSE’s existingnetwork: No provision to identifyand restrict the users to one IPaddress. There is every possibilityof duplication of an IP address onthe network. Possibility ofduplication of the IP address ofthe Tandem Server leading to acomplete shut down of thesystem. No single point ofnetwork management andcontrol. Uncontrolled addition ofdevices like hubs, switches,routers etc. without a unified planchanging the network topologythereby, increasing the load on thesystem and degrading thenetwork performance. NoDirectory Service available tomanage the network and itsresources. No way to detect andprevent unwanted broadcast,which may arise due to faultyNetwork Interface Cards. Also, noprovision to prevent Frame Errorsand data corruption. No way toprevent access of unauthorizedusers to the network resources.Remote connectivity via Dial-upand VSAT not secure. To address

all security issues and future expansion plansincluding shifting to new premises at Asaf Ali Road,the solution proposed was built with minimal changesin the current set up. The best solution was one, whichdoes not alter the current set up and guarantees 100%security of the network. However, the existing sharedhub based network would have several drawbacks,which could be overcome only by opting for a switch-based network incorporating Sandards based Layer3 Security. Some of the advantages of such a changewere as follows: A 100% secure network throughmapping of Por t, IP and MAC addresses, hencepreventing unauthorised access to the networkresources. Providing Firewall & Radius Security forremote (V-SAT & dial-up) users. Minimum numberof points of failure on the network in case of Chassisbased solutions. The 48 Gbps switch fabric with 56Mpps layer 3 switching module, switches the trafficat wire speed. The Layer 3 modules used in the twochassis are 10 port 10/100 fibre modules. The twobuildings are connected over 4 x 10/100 links overfibre links such that four cores from each fibre areused to connect to two ports at the two Layer 3 fibremodules at the two chassis & tagging the four portsin a single logical link giving 800 Mbps throughputon Full Duplex. The four links would act as faulttolerant links to each other, such that in the event ofone link failing, the others would still work. For LANconnectivity, there is a provision for 396 number of10/100 Tx ports in DSE House and 288 10/100 portsin the DSE Old Building. The design further providesfor fault tolerance of all servers, in event of the unlikelyfailure of one module while keeping them all in asingle VLAN.
