A Patient’s Journey …

Welcome to the Children's Day SurgeryThis is the Day Surgery Centre where you will come 

on the day of your operation.

(Young child)

Fergus and his mummy are booked in by the reception team.  

The nurse who will look after Fergus today comes to meet him and his mummy. She will then take them both to the children’s bay.

The nurse asks Fergus and his mummy some important questions and finds out about the things he enjoys doing. She will be happy to answer any questions they have. 

The nurse also does some simple checks with Fergus to make sure he is well today; none of these hurt at all.

A special machine (called a thermometer) is placed gently in Fergus’s ear to measure his temperature. It tickles a bit!

The nurse puts a special peg on Fergus’s finger to see how fast his heart is beating. Fergus can see numbers on the peg and the nurse writes these down.  

Fergus stands really still on the scales to see how much he weighs.  This information will help the nurses and doctors look after Fergus. 

A special ‘sleep doctor’, called an anaesthetist, meets Fergus and his mummy to talk and ask a few questions about his operation today.  

Fergus also meets the surgeon (the person who will do the operation). They talk about what they will do today to help Fergus.

The nurse shows Fergus her toy friend called ‘Ernie’. He has magic cream on his hand covered by a see through plaster. Fergus has this put on his hands too, just like Ernie.

Fergus has time to play before his operation. The play room has lots of toys and games to keep Fergus busy.  

Fergus will soon get changed into his pyjamas, ready for his special sleep today.

Fergus gets to drive a jeep to the ‘going to sleep’ room! It’s great fun! His mummy and the nurse go with him.

There are two ways to go off to sleep, either:

Fergus sits on a bed and plays on the iPad while he breaths in some magic sleepy air through a mask. He will very soon feel sleepy. Mummy and the nurse are with him.

Or…

…after the magic cream is taken off, Fergus has a special small thin tube put in his hand by the sleep doctor. She can then give Fergus medicines through this that will send him off to sleep for his operation.  

Mummy and the nurse are with Fergus. 

Once the doctor has finished the operation to make Fergus better, he is looked after by a special nurse in the ‘waking up room’ (recovery room).

As soon as Fergus wakes up his mummy comes to see him and give him a cuddle.

Fergus has a ride back to the children's bay on his bed. The nurse gets him a drink and will look after him. He will soon have something to eat too.

The nurse puts a peg on his finger again for a few seconds, to see how fast his heart is beating. This will help the nurse decide when Fergus is ready to go home.

Fergus is feeling much better and is ready to go home with his mummy.
