Foot Science International (FSI), the designer and manufacturer of Formthotics is based in Christchurch, New Zealand.

This is our back garden, where Formthotics are used every day. FSI care about the health and wellbeing of feet, to enhance human comfort, help prevent and treat injuries, and promote healthy active lifestyles.

Having already fitted Formthotics to millions of people across the globe, FSI continually build upon research and experience over the past 30+ years to develop products that help our adventures be the most enjoyable.

Formthotics were born in the 1970s from an observation in the sand and a realisation that our feet were never designed to cope with the hard, flat and unforgiving surfaces of our modern day environment.

Today, Formthotics give you the support and comfort inside your adventure footwear, similar to the support that nature provides while walking in the sand.

Whether that adventure is a mountain bike in the forest, a day caring for patients at the hospital, performing in a running race, playing a game of football at lunchtime, a walk to work, a walk around the retirement village or skiing the slopes of St Anton am Arlberg in Austria.

Support for your activity

Support for you

Our activities require different footwear and require us to move in different ways. Formthotics have a wide selection of models designed specifically to fit your activity footwear and provide support for the way you move.

Formthotics support every body and foot type including:

They are thermoformable - heat mouldable for a truly customised fit. Formax™ foam thermoforms at relatively low temperatures and retains it’s moulded shape. This unique foam creates a close fit between your foot and footwear, maximising orthotic performance*.

*For optimal thermoforming, it is recommended a Formthotics Heating Machine is used at the time of fitting. This speeds up the adaptation to Formthotics. If no heating machine is available, Formthotics will mould using the body’s weight and temperature over time.

Keep your feet on the ground and your head in the sky

Formthotics form a close contact surface between the sole of your unique foot and shoe so you have a greater contact surface area to the ground. Your foot will have a greater sense of where it is so you’ll know more about every move.

Creating a close contact surface between your uniquely shaped foot and shoe means your body’s weight is carried over a greater surface area.

Without customised support in the sole of your shoe, the weight of your body is often carried on the ball of your foot and the heel – two small areas.

Have a greater awareness of where your feet are, with greater comfort so you can have your head high in confidence, enjoying the scenery. You could be thinking of the race ahead, your nutrition or your pace. Less time is spent thinking of keeping feet steady or the tiring pain.

AntimicrobialFormthotics contain Ultra-Fresh™, which inhibits the growth of bacteria and fungi that create foot odor and staining, keeping your feet healthy.

ThermoformableFormthotics are thermoformed (heat moulded) at relatively low temperatures and retain the moulded shape. Moulding an orthotic to the shape of your foot provides a truly customised fit.

Foam features

ShockStopSome special Formthotics models are made from a unique foam produced by Foot Science International. Made from a hybrid of EVA and polymer foams to provide maximum shock absorption and cushioning, this minimises the impact on muscles, joints and tendons and eases recovery time after performance.

Formax™

Foot Science International’s own foam is made from a range of high grade ‘closed cell’ foams, designed to provide the most flexible, lightweight and supportive orthotic possible.

3D milledFormthotics are 3D milled from a block of foam, ensuring they provide a consistent spread of support across the skeletal system of your foot and any pressure points.

Heel cupThe deep heel cup provides increased support and control around your heel, assists with shock absorption and minimises heel strike.

Arch supportThe teardrop shaped, graded arch support ensures your foot is supported in a neutral position and provides longitudinal, lateral and transverse arch support under the metatarsal heads.

Selection guide

Volume axis

The effect of shape and thickness of the particular Formax™ foam on the volume required in the shoe. Volume is classed as low, medium or high.

Control axis

The amount of control of the particular Formthotics model. Control is a combination of different shapes, support and cushioning. The options available are low, medium, high or maximum.

Example: A professional skier

has a tight fitting boot and

wants every subtle movement

they make to be transferred

to movement in the skis,

influencing their movement

on the slope. This high level

of control is needed when

every second counts. For this

skier, high control Formthotics

are needed in a specific Ski

shape that fits into a tight race

boot. Therefore, the model

is Ski Single High: the specific

ski boot shape provides arch

support and a deep heel

cup that creates a medium

level of volume, and the high

density Formax foam enables a

maximum level of control.
