Unity is a handbook of Christian Healing and Christian Psychology.

The purpose of Unity is, not to found a new sect, but to give the people a practical application of what they already have through their church affiliations. Unity stands independent as an exponent of Practical Christianity, teaching the application of the doctrine of Jesus Christ in all affairs of life; explaining the action of mind, the connecting link between God and man; how mind affects the body, producing discord or harmony, sickness or health; how it brings man into the understanding of Divine Law, harmony, health, and peace, here and now.

Unity explains how this power of mind can be exercised by every man and woman, for it is as operative today as it was two thousand years ago.

Unity is also the organ of the Society of Silent Unity, an organization through which an immense amount of help is being extended to suffering humanity everywhere. No matter how desperate a case may be, the Society of Silent Unity will take it.

Believing in the innate honesty and justice of all men and women, voluntary offerings are received for all our ministrations. No demand for money, nor a charge against any one, has been made in over thirty years of our existence.

If you or your friends are sick or unhappy, in poverty or financial difficulties, or in trouble of any kind, write or telegraph to this Society, and you will be helped at once. All correspondence is confidential.

Send all requests for help to Society of Silent Unity, Tenth and Tracy avenue, Kansas City, Mo.

THE TEMPLEE dna Constance W illard

I know the temple— now—at last—The temple of the living God.

* *I am the priest.Serving.

Sensing his happiness,I am the chorister.

* ¥

Such depth of peace within the temple, Such wonder listening to his heart. That sometimes I am lost In the mystic dream of it.And forget That I am also The sacristan.

METHODS OF SILENT UNITYT heo Schobert

IS a great privilege to be permitted to tell you something of our Silent Unity work, and to explain how absent healing is done; how the members of Silent Unity go about it to minister to those who request our help, even to those who, to mortal sense, are thousands of miles

away; and to explain how Spirit moves to bring about the desired results.

Absent healing is the term we use for want of a better word, to convey our meaning to others. The term, omnipresent healing, expresses this form of spiritual help much more clearly to us, but it is not so readily understood by those who do not yet comprehend the truth of the omnipresence of God—Spirit.

In order to pray the prayer of faith for one who, to mortal consciousness, is in South Africa, Australia, Florida, California, or even somewhere in Kansas City, the first thing necessary, after faith, is an understanding of the true character of God as Omnipresence. W e all know that God is not a great being with a form like a man, sitting on a throne somewhere up in the skies, having despotic powers like the monarchs of old, and sending suffering or happiness to his subjects according to his pleasure. Many, however, who write to us for help, do not know even this much about God. They have some vague idea of him in their minds, but they have no clear concept of him, and so we have to teach them the truth about “our Father.”

W e are told in the Bible that God is Spirit. Spirit is synonymous with mind. W e, therefore, know God as Mind, the one great Mind and Intelligence of the universe, always everywhere present— all power, all knowledge. In order to get a comprehensive understanding of the omnipresence of God, Divine Mind, we must know

Page 4: A Monthly Magazine issued the first of the month by UNITY … · 2019-01-22 · A Monthly Magazine issued the first of the month by UNITY SCHOOL OF CHRISTIANITY, (Inc.) Tenth Street

something of what is called the “ fourth dimension.” W e understand the three dimensions: length, breadth, and thickness. Mortal man, in his outer form, at least, is limited to these; but the fourth dimension is a state of being in which there are no limitations of time or space —no such thing as distance.

By carefully studying our own minds, we can learn something of the Father Mind. W e will say that one of you has a dear friend or relative across the sea. Do you have literally to travel by land and by water, a distance of perhaps thousands of miles, in order to think of this friend, or to image him in your mind? No; there is no time nor distance to thought. It can dwell on anything, and see anything, at any time, at any place. You can readily understand, then, how, to the Absolute, the one Father-God, Spirit, there is only one time, that is now, and only one place, and that is here— present everywhere. T o God, there are no limitations as to time and space.

Eternity is not made up of yesterdays, tomorrows, and next years, nor of thousands of years, nor of a never ending succession of days and years, as man counts time. There is no beginning to eternity, and no end; all there is, is just noTV. So we come to realize that all that the Father is— all life, all love, all intelligence, all substance, all wisdom, all power, all strength — is all here now present with every one, wherever he may be.

W e may well say, as David said: “Whither shall I go from thy Spirit? Or whither shall I flee from thy presence? If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, thou art there. If I take the wings of the morning, And dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; Even there shall thy hand lead me, And thy right hand shall hold me. If I say, Surely the darkness shall overwhelm me, And the light about me shall be night; Even the darkness hideth not from thee, But the night shineth as the day : The darkness and the

light are both alike to thee." Do not let any one think for a moment that he can get away from God.

How often my whole soul has gone out in longing to open up to this truth the consciousness of some of those whom I meet daily by letter! I see their need clearly, but oftentimes the individuals apparently continue to reach out here and there, always to some person or some thing on the outside—something they can grasp with their hands, or see with their outer eyes. They seem to be slow to turn their attention within, to the one and only Source of the fulfillment of their needs and desires. They cannot seem to realize that, all the time, the fullness of God, which includes life, love, health, and plenty, is ever with them and in them, waiting their recognition of it, that it may come into manifestation. In God they live, move, and have their being, all the time; their very life, in its true essence, is the life of God; the very breath they breath# is Spirit; the very substance of their bodies is a manifestation (though perhaps an imperfect one) of Spirit Substance, and their very ability to move, or to do anything, is the activity of the one Life.

But right here is one of the lessons we have to learn in aiding others: W e must not throw away our forces and substance needlessly, through the overzealous efforts of the personal to do the work that is God’s to accomplish. W e must just be faithful in speaking the word, realizing the Truth of Being for each one, and then let the Father do the work in the individual.

Besides knowing the now everywhere presence of Spirit, we, as efficient Silent Unity workers, must also know the allness of God, and the true relation of all men to the Father. When a name is presented to us for help of any kind, we declare for, and realize in that person that he is a son of God, made in His image and likeness, and that he is, in his true self, perfect even as the Father is perfect.

W e realize that God is all. This means that there

is no power of evil; there is only one Power, one Presence, one Reality, one Truth, and that is God, the Good. All else, whether mortal consciousness calls it sickness, sin, poverty, inharmony, or degradation of whatever kind or degree, is but a seeming. No matter how vividly the seeming evils and inharmonies are portrayed to us in letters, we simply £now that they are nothing; they are not founded in Being, but are only false conditions which have been built up by the ignorant thoughts of the sense man. These conditions therefore, are not real, and so they will, before the power of the spoken word, dissolve into nothingness, whence they came. Then by learning how to order his thoughts aright, the patient will build into his life the good he desires, and that which alone is true.

W e, therefore, deny the error, and, as I said before, we realize the Truth for the individual. W e do this for every one to whom we write. In our healing meetings, we realize the Truth along the different lines which I have just mentioned; then, as the name is called, we speak in unison the healing or prospering word for that person.

In the realization of Omnipresence, we are one with the Father, our patient is one with the Father, and we are one with the patient. There is no separation, no distance; we are all one in Spirit. In this realization of the oneness and the allness of Good, there is no evil, no disease, no poverty, no disorder nor inharmony; our patient is a perfect child of God. It is in this realization that the word of wholeness— of God, we might say— is spoken, and we have faith that the work is done. As to the manifestation of the spoken word, which takes place in the minds, bodies, and affairs of those for whom we pray, another point of consideration enters in.

Many who seek our aid, prove the promise: “Before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear.” They realize the answer to their prayers, and are healed, as soon as they mail their let-

ters, and before the letters have time to reach us. Others experience the desired deliverance or help at about the time we receive, or should receive their letters. Others get a great spiritual uplift, and see a change for the better, soon after writing to us, their healing and progress into the light of Truth being gradual. Some—but they are few in comparison with the others—seem to the outer man to be very slow in making their demonstrations. This shows that adjustment in the individual is often needed; there is something standing in his way, some kind of error in thought or habit, which hinders the Spirit from doing its work in him. He therefore needs teaching, and this is a great part of our work.

Silent Unity workers are busy in our healing rooms day and night. They are constantly calling into action the word of God, which gives impetus to harmony, order, prosperity, health awakening, spirit quickening, and all harmonious adjustment in the lives of those who come to us for aid. This is the reason that it is not necessary for any one to wait until his request reaches us before receiving the desired help. If he is open-minded and receptive, he receives as soon as he turns his attention to God, and asks. Some limit themselves, thinking they can get no help until their letters reach us; and some, until our answers get to them. According to their faith, so it is unto them.

W e get many letters saying, “As soon as this reaches you, I know I shall be all right;” or, “This letter ought to reach you by Wednesday noon [or Friday morning, as the case may be], and I know I shall get the help I need, then.” Others, telling of good realized, mention their deliverance as having come at a certain time, just about the time we must have received their letters. Others say that as soon as they received our letter, they were wonderfully blessed and delivered, thus showing the limitations of their faith.

Some, who are receptive in the conscious mind, at

Page 8: A Monthly Magazine issued the first of the month by UNITY … · 2019-01-22 · A Monthly Magazine issued the first of the month by UNITY SCHOOL OF CHRISTIANITY, (Inc.) Tenth Street

least to a certain degree, have to be freed by the word from resistant forces in the subconscious, or body consciousness, before they can see the full results of the prayer of faith offered for them. Others are subconsciously receptive, and receive wonderful help without knowing that we are ministering unto them, the request having been sent in by some near relative or friend who had faith, and who joined with us in speaking the quickening word.

Some come to us to “try us out,” as they would some medical doctor or patent medicine. But whatever be the motive that prompts them to come to God through us, it is very seldom, if ever, that no help is realized by them. The word is seed, and it will take root and spring up, and bear fruit, even if it does not always show forth at once. No true word is ever lost.

Sometimes when the word is spoken for a patient, he seems at first to get worse, or to experience a great stirring up within him, causing confusion in mind and body. Occasionally we receive a letter from one who has this experience, and not understanding it, he has become frightened, and asks us to stop the treatments at once. When he is told the reason for his experience, and heeds the instructions to hold steadfastly to the truth of his divine wholeness, he soon comes into harmony and freedom.

In these cases, when the word with its quickening power enters the consciousness, it meets a resistant state of mind, or else it has a great deal to do in the tearing down of false conditions, before healing can take place, and this causes the greater inharmony which seems to take place.

When we, as overcomers, understand the cause of these seeming great inharmonies, they do not trouble us; we rejoice and give thanks, even in the midst of trial, knowing that greater light is breaking for us, and that a new state of consciousness is being formed in us.

FAITH THINKINGCharles F illmore

A N can never discern more than a segment of the circle in which he moves, although his powers and capacities are susceptible of infinite expansion. He discovers a faculty in himself, and cultivates it, until it opens out into a universe of correlated faculties. The

farther he goes into mind, the wider its horizon, until he is forced to acknowledge that he is not the personal, limited thing he appears, but the focus of an infinite idea.

That idea contains within itself inexhaustible possibilities. These possibilities are projected into man’s consciousness as in a mirror, and, through the powers vested in him, he brings them into manifestation.

Thus man is the most important factor in creation— he is the will of God individualized.

There is but one God, hence there can be but one man. Each individual is the focus of the life, intelligence, love, and substance of this one universal man__Christ.

W e draw all our substance, of whatever nature, mental or physical, from him— “ In him we live, and move, and have our being.”

Our identity as individuals is formed by the infinitely various combinations of his attributes. W e are the will of this Grand Man, and each one of us draws upon him, through our sentient volition, for whatever we need.

All that any individual has ever expressed, or may ever express, is open to each one of us, because there is but one fount and we all stand as equals in His presence.

There is one principle of music; but there are millions of combinations in symphony and song, of the few simple tones upon which that principle is based. These tones are expressed in form as notes. They may be on

Page 10: A Monthly Magazine issued the first of the month by UNITY … · 2019-01-22 · A Monthly Magazine issued the first of the month by UNITY SCHOOL OF CHRISTIANITY, (Inc.) Tenth Street

the staff, in variations beyond computation, and similar variations may also be repeated above and below the staff.

So each one of us focuses the attributes of Man in our consciousness in infinite combinations on the staff— the intellect; above the staff, the spiritual; or below the staff, the animal.

Certain arrangements of dominant tones are recognized by musical composers as producing harmony. So in man; certain combinations of the attributes of the Christ in the individual, Jesus, produce the harmonious man, Christ Jesus.

W e refer to the Christ as man, because our language has no word which expresses the two-in-one of Being. The Hebrew Yeve is a term which includes both male and female attributes.

Paul inspirationally said: “Have this mind in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: who, existing in the form of God, counted not the being on an equality with God a thing to be grasped.”

This is the problem set before each one of us. W e all want to know how to let the mind be in us which was in Christ Jesus. W e feel the stirring of powers and capacities within, which we have never been able to use because of a weakness in some coordinating faculty.

One may have a talent suppressed because of diffidence; another may have a talent rendered obnoxious by excessive egotism. This all shows that our powers are making servants of us. W e must know who and what we are; we must take our place in the Godhead and marshal our forces.

There are various methods for doing this. Most of them are limited; they never get above the intellect; that is, they do not go above the staff—they do not venture into the spiritual. Most of these methods are theoretical ; they are written down by those who have perceived the Truth but who have not carried it out in detail.

One man let his life be a demonstration of the bring-

ing forth of the powers of the Christ; this was Jesus of Nazareth.

From within he gave forth the doctrine of the Christ; externally he stood for perfected humanity, Jesus; his disciples represented the powers of each one of us acting their respective parts under varying moods, but eventually blended into the one harmony—perfect man.

In order to command our powers, and to bring them into unity of action, we must know what they are, and their respective places on the staff of Being.

The Grand Man, Christ, has twelve powers, represented in the history of Jesus by the twelve disciples. So each one of us has twelve powers to make manifest —to bring out and use in the achievement of our ideals.

The most important power of man is the original faith-thinking faculty. Note particularly the term, “original faith-thinking faculty;” a great deal is involved in this definition. W e all have the thinking faculty located in the head, from which we send forth thoughts, good, bad, and indifferent. If we are educated and molded after the ordinary pattern of the human family, we may live an average lifetime, and never have an original thought. The thinking faculty in the head is supplied with the secondhand ideas of our ancestors, the dominant beliefs of the race, or the threadbare stock of the ordinary social swim. This is not faiththinking. Faith-thinking is done only by one who has caught sight of the inner truths of Being, and who feeds his thinking faculty upon images generated in the heart, or love center.

Faith-thinking is not merely an intellectual process, based upon reasoning. The faith-thinker does not compare, analyze, or draw conclusions from known premises. He does not take appearances into consideration; he is not biased by precedent. His thinking gives form, without cavil or question, to ideas that come straight from the eternal fount of Wisdom. His perception impinges upon the spiritual, and he knows.

Page 12: A Monthly Magazine issued the first of the month by UNITY … · 2019-01-22 · A Monthly Magazine issued the first of the month by UNITY SCHOOL OF CHRISTIANITY, (Inc.) Tenth Street

T o the question, “W ho do men say that the Son of man is?” those who reflected the indefinite, guessing thought currents of the day, answered: “Some sap John the Baptist; some, Elijah; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets.”

But Jesus is not asking for secondhand opinions; he appeals direct to the faculty in man that always knows. He says, “But who say ye that I am?” and that faculty represented as Peter, answers, “Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

Then it is the Christ that blesses him, and says: “Flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father who is in heaven.

“And I also say unto thee, that thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.”

The thinking faculty in man makes him a free agent, because it is his creative center; in and through this one power, he establishes his consciousness—he builds his world. Through the volition of this faculty, he can refuse to receive ideas from Christ, he can cut himself away from the realm of original Truth, or from the illusionary universe in which he is forever unraveling tangled ends and chasing shadows. Thus we see clearly that this faculty is the rock, the foundation upon which our consciousness must be built.

For generation after generation, humanity had exercised the thinking faculty, and fed it upon the illusions of sense, and “every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.” The root of the Hebrew word here translated evil is oven, which means “nothing.” Thus man was feeding his thinking faculty on nothing, instead of true thoughts from God.

As the result of this lack of conscious connection of the thinking faculty with the fountainhead of existence, humanity had reached a very low state. Then came Jesus of Nazareth, whose mission it was to connect the thinker with the true source of thought. Thinking at

Page 13: A Monthly Magazine issued the first of the month by UNITY … · 2019-01-22 · A Monthly Magazine issued the first of the month by UNITY SCHOOL OF CHRISTIANITY, (Inc.) Tenth Street

random had brought man into a deplorable condition, and his salvation depended upon again joining his consciousness to the Christ. Only through that connection could he be brought back into his Edenic state—the church of God.

Then it was, in the darkness of intellect’s night, that the thinking faculty caught sight of its higher self and joyfully exclaimed, “Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God,” and the response to that gleam of spiritual perception was the acknowledgment of faith as the foundation upon which the church of Christ is built.

W hat an incalculable amount of time, energy, and effort has been wasted trying to build conditions of harmony, by both individuals and society, without making the connection between the thinker and the true source of thought.

If you have not recognized the spiritual center within yourself, and have not acknowledged allegiance to it, you are drifting in the darkness of sense. You are allowing your thinking faculty to draw its ideas, which are its food, from the chaos of ignorance, and you suffer the consequences in the discordant world it creates for you. Do not forget thjJ e^erb'thing that appears in your life and affairs^ physically, nVentally, or otherwise, has sometime beyn sent forth from your thinking faculty. It is only through the power vested! in it that you can come into consciousness of anything.! Consciousness makes your hea>en and it makes your ' hell.

Som* people have let the thinking faculty run away with thijjn, and they cannot control their thoughts. So some drivers, through carelessness, y az in ^ ^ o r ignorance, lef-flfisir horses run away, but the l»vV always\hftWs.t-beHL - responsible for the damage done, and they find it cheaper in the end to be more alert and to give stricter attention to driving.

Get clearly into your understanding that ijou are not the faith-thinker, Peter. You are Jesus; Peter is one of your twelve powers.

Page 14: A Monthly Magazine issued the first of the month by UNITY … · 2019-01-22 · A Monthly Magazine issued the first of the month by UNITY SCHOOL OF CHRISTIANITY, (Inc.) Tenth Street

Before this truth dawns upon you, you are a carpenter; you are a builder in the realm of matter. Peter is a fisherman, one who draws his ideas from the changeable, unstable sea of sense.

When you realize that you are Mind, and that all things are originally generated in the laboratory of Mind, you leave your carpenter’s bench, and go forth proclaiming this truth that is revealed to you. You find that your tools in this new field of labor are your untrained faculties. The first of these faculties to be brought under your dominion is Peter, the thinking power. This thinking faculty is closely associated with another power, your strength (A ndrew ); they are brothers, and you say to them, “Come ye after me, and I will make you fishers of men.”

“Going on from thence”—that is, when you have trained these faculties until they are in a measure obedient, you discover two other powers: John (love) and James (justice). These are also brothers, and you call to them both at the same time.

You now have four powers under your dominion; these are the first disciples of Jesus. With these you begin to do the works of the Spirit.-

You now have the poorer to heai ff& many that are “sick with divers diseases/, and cast out maW demons,” and to preach “throughout all Galilee.”

That Peter stands t(>day at the gate of htaver> is no mere figure of speech; hf'e always stands there, ^hen you have acknowledged th'e Christ; and he has the “keys of the kingdom of heaven.” The keys are the thoughts he forms, the^dsds h£ speaks. He then stands ‘porter

-3ftA*?£ dsSK of thought, ” and freely exercises that pow?T ̂which the Christ declares: “Whatsoever thou shaltbind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”

You can readily see why this faith-thinker, Peter, is the foundation; why faith is the one faculty to be guarded, directed, and trained. His words are opera-

Page 15: A Monthly Magazine issued the first of the month by UNITY … · 2019-01-22 · A Monthly Magazine issued the first of the month by UNITY SCHOOL OF CHRISTIANITY, (Inc.) Tenth Street

tive on many planes of consciousness, and he will bind you to conditions of servitude, if you do not guard his acts closely.

Those people who let their thinking faculty attach itself to the things of earth, are limiting or “binding” their free ideas, or "heaven,” and they thereby become slaves to hard, material conditions, gradually shutting out any desire for higher things.

Those who look right through the apparent hardships of earthly environments, and persistently declare them not material, but spiritual, are “loosing” them in the ideal, or “heaven,” and they must, through the creative power vested in the thinker, eventually arrange themselves according to his word.

This is also especially true of bodily conditions. If you allow Peter to speak of erroneous states of consciousness as true conditions, you will be bound to them, and you will suffer; but if you see to it that he pronounces them free from errors of sense, they will be “loosed.”

Until faith is thoroughly identified with the Christ, you will find that the Peter faculty in you is a regular weathercock. He will, in all sincerity, affirm his allegiance to the Spirit, and then in the hour of adversity, deny that he ever knew him.

This, however, is in his probationary period. When you have trained him to look to Christ for all things and under all circumstances, he becomes the staunchest defender of the faith.

How necessary it is that you know the important place in your consciousness which this faculty, Peter, occupies. You are the free will, the directive Ego, Jesus. You have the problem of life before you—-the bringing forth of the Grand Man with his twelve powers.

This is your “church.” You are the high priest without beginning of years, or end of days, the alpha and the omega; but you cannot do what the Father has set before you, without disciplining your powers. Your

Page 16: A Monthly Magazine issued the first of the month by UNITY … · 2019-01-22 · A Monthly Magazine issued the first of the month by UNITY SCHOOL OF CHRISTIANITY, (Inc.) Tenth Street

thinking faculty is the first to be considered. It is the inlet and the outlet of all your ideas. It is always active, zealous, impulsive, but not always wise. Its nature is to think, and lhinl( it will. If you are ignorant of your office— a prince in the house of David— and stand meekly by, and let it think unsifted thoughts, your thinking faculty will prove an unruly servant, and produce all sorts of discord.

Its food is ideas—symbolized in the gospels as fishes —and it is forever casting its net on the right, on the left, for a draught.

You alone can direct where its net shall be cast. You are he who says, “Cast the net on the right side.”

The “right side” is always on the side of Truth, the side of power. Whenever pou, the master, are there, the nets are filled with ideas, because you are in touch with the infinite storehouse of wisdom.

You must stay very close to Peter—you must always be certain of his allegiance and love. Test him often. Say unto him, “Lovest thou me more than these?” You want his undivided attention. He is inclined to wander; we say our “mind wanders.” This is an error. The Mind never wanders. The faith-thinker, Peter, wanders; he looks in many directions. He stands at the door of heaven, the harmony within you; the same door has the world of sense on its outer side.

Peter looks within— he also looks without. This is his office, and it is right that he should look both ways. But he must be equalized—balanced. He must look within for his sustenance; he must recognize the Christ before he can draw his net full of fishes.

Keep pour epe on Peter. Make him toe the mark every moment. Teach him to affirm over and over again. Say unto him “the third time, Simon, son of John, lovest thou me?” He may say, “Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee.”

This is a very common protest. W e hear, in this day

of modern metaphysics, that concentration is not necessary; that it is only necessary to perceive spiritual truths; that the demonstration will follow.

Jesus Christ gave us many lessons upon that very point. He knew Peter like a book. He knew that a faculty whose office was so versatile, was apt frequently to change its base. When in the exuberance of his allegiance, Peter protested that he would lay down his life for Jesus, the Master said, “Verily, verily, I say unto thee, The cock shall not crow, till thou hast denied me thrice.”

You must teach Peter to concentrate. Teach him to center himself on true words. It is through him that you feed your sheep—your other faculties. Keep him right at his task. He is inquisitive, impulsive, and dictatorial, when not firmly directed. When he questions your dominion and tries to dictate the movements of your other powers, put him into line, with, “W hat is that to thee? follow thou me.”

Descartes said, “ I think, therefore I am.” This is precisely as if Jesus had said, “ I am Peter, therefore I am.” This is the I A m losing itself in its own creation. Exactly the converse of this statement is true: “/ am, therefore 1 think-”

Thinking is a faculty of the Ego, the omnipotent / A m of each one of us. It is a process in mind, the formulating process of mind, and under our dominion.

The I A m does not think unless it wills to do so. You can stop all thought action when you have learned to separate your I A m from the thinking faculty. Know this, and live in Christ.

Be no longer a slave to the thinking faculty; command it to be still and £non>. Stand at the center of your being and say, “ I and the Father are one. I am meek and lowly in heart.” “All authority hath been given me in heaven and on earth.”

“I am that I am—there is none beside me.”

SLEEPE. V. Ingraham

U E STIO N S are constantly being asked in regard to sleep. These questions involve two phases of the subject. One group of questions arises from the inability to sleep; the other group arises from the tendency to sleep too much, or to sleep at times when there is need

of being awake. In entering upon the subject, let us get clearly into

mind just what sleep is, and what its purpose is. Some of the recent conclusions of physiologists and psychologists give us a clearer understanding of the character of sleep and how to master it, than we have had before. From these conclusions it is now quite generally accepted that sleep is a process of revitalization. Some modern physiologists have discarded the theory that we gain strength from the food which we eat. They assert that strength is restored by sleep; that the food which we eat merely repairs waste tissue. The body and what we eat are like the storage battery and the chemicals which are placed therein to retain the electrical energy. The body is a storage battery for the energy of Spirit, and it becomes a strong and vital battery only when properly fed and kept up, and when the mental forces of the individual are properly directed into it and through it.

The modern psychologist makes it clear to us as to just what takes place in sleep. He says that the conscious mind leaves its seat in the brain and goes down into the subconscious, in the body. Considering the body as a storage battery, and the mind as its energy, sleep, and the process involved in sleep, become comparatively simple. It can be very clearly seen from this illustration of the storage battery, why one becomes tired from activity, and why he finds rest in sleep. One tires

Page 19: A Monthly Magazine issued the first of the month by UNITY … · 2019-01-22 · A Monthly Magazine issued the first of the month by UNITY SCHOOL OF CHRISTIANITY, (Inc.) Tenth Street

because his mental and physical forces become projected into external things. In sleep, the action of these forces is reversed. The return of the forces to the body vitalizes it, and what we call rest is the result.

The whole secret of restful sleep lies in one’s ability to bring about an harmonious and peaceful relationship between the mind and the body. To bring this about, one should not strive to go to sleep. Sleep is not a thing to be sought, any more than any other result is to be sought. Bring about the conditions which naturally tend to induce sleep, and sleep will logically follow.

But what are the things which are naturally conducive to sleep? First, a peaceful mind. A peaceful mind may be attained by a process of quieting and harmonizing thought. “ Peace, be still,” is a very quieting thought. “The peace and the harmony of God quiet me and fill me with harmony,” is another quieting thought. “ I rest in the Lord,” and many other similar thoughts, all have a quieting effect upon the mind, and they will go a long way toward establishing an attitude of mind conducive to sleep. In addition to this, give the mind the task of putting the whole body into a perfectly comfortable state. Can you imagine anything more peaceful and quieting than a mother tucking a child into a soft and downy bed? There is only one thing I know of that is more comforting, and that is to go through one’s entire being with somewhat the same motive, and thus bring the greatest possible degree of comfort to each part of the body.

Begin at the top of the head, and speak the word, “Peace, be still,” to each part of the body, away down to the tips of the toes. Other similar thoughts may be added, such as:

Relax.“H e giveth unto his beloved sleep.”Rest in the peace and quiet of Divine Presence. These thoughts, if carried quietly into each part of

the body, will not only interest and calm the mind, but

Page 20: A Monthly Magazine issued the first of the month by UNITY … · 2019-01-22 · A Monthly Magazine issued the first of the month by UNITY SCHOOL OF CHRISTIANITY, (Inc.) Tenth Street

will free the body, to a degree that will make genuine rest possible.

By the above process, not only a state of mental peace and physical comfort may be attained, but the action of the mind will be in harmony with the scientific explanation of what sleep really is, viz.: conscious mind leaving its seat in the brain, and going down into the subconscious, which functions through the cellular structure of the body.

Sometimes sleeplessness is due to the fact that the individual does not require much sleep, and therefore, spends many hours of the night in wakefulness. People who do not put forth much mental or physical effort during the day, may be found in this class. One may, however, put forth much mental and physical effort, with the proper balance or relationship between the mind and the body, and still not deplete the body of its energy, and so he may require but little sleep. Such people may profitably spend the wakeful hours in meditation.

Many persons sleep too much, and no matter how much they sleep, they always feel the need of more sleep. Sometimes this is only nature’s making provision for some readjustment: but in chronic cases, it is probable that the mind is more or less dissociated from the body during sleep. These people, like daydreamers, are scouring around through the universe in thought, and are leaving the body like an empty house, ready prey of negative thoughts and conditions. The cure for this condition is similar to the cure for sleeplessness. When the mind is trained and disciplined to function through the body, the individual becomes so charged with energy that the need of sleep is greatly reduced.

Although some people say that sleep is unnecessary, yet in our present mode of living, we still seem to require a considerable amount of it. However, if one is convinced that it is unnecessary, instead of trying to get along without it, he should so live, in and through his

Page 21: A Monthly Magazine issued the first of the month by UNITY … · 2019-01-22 · A Monthly Magazine issued the first of the month by UNITY SCHOOL OF CHRISTIANITY, (Inc.) Tenth Street

body, that the vital forces of his being will give it the energy necessary to keep it thoroughly vitalized. Then the matter of more or less sleep will adjust itself.

DABBLING IN THE OCCULTMany of you have read “Zanoni” (by Lord Lyt-

ton), in which the hero, a young artist, goes to study occult matters under Zanoni. A t first he gets on all right, until one day, in the absence of one of the adepts or instructors, he does something wrong, and lets loose on himself the power of some wicked spirit, called “the dweller on the threshold.” It is many years before he gets rid of this spirit.

I may tell you it is, by no means, a mere fiction. It was Lytton’s real experience. Many years ago when I was in India, serving under a certain colonel, he asked me what I thought of “Zanoni.” I told him in my idea it was a mere flight of fancy. He replied:

“ My father was an intimate friend of Lytton’s, who told him that, so far from its being simple fiction, it was merely a sketch of autobiography. When he was a young man, he said, he went to Heidelberg, and while studying there, he heard that the students had circles for the study of occult matters. He joined, and the result was that he found himself in such fearful spiritual company, that he could not get rid of this spirit for twenty years. Those who thrust their way in, unprepared, bring themselves into contact with all sorts of negative and destructive astral entities. Not only does it affect their minds, but from the merely physical side, this premature seeking of knowledge and power is to be set aside. It indicates a want of belief in God, distrust of your heavenly Father’s teaching— this trying to grasp before the time.”—Selected.

UNFOLDING THE HEALING CONSCIOUSNESS OF THE CHRIST

POWER C ora G. D edrick

E SH A L L when theHoly Spirit is come upon you.” This is a wonderful Scriptural quotation, but it contains even a much deeper philosophy than the mind of man can compass without much prayerful thought and meditation.

Power is an intelligent, controlling force, generated from Divine Mind. There is a law back of and within all action, out of which arises mastery or power. It is this dominion of life action that all those who seek spiritual freedom and healing must have. The power idea equalizes the life energy in the body, and bears the same relation to the life current that the electric transformer bears to the current of electricity. Just as light is generated in a room by harnessing and directing electricity, so spiritual power is generated in mind and body by harnessing and directing the spiritual life flow. The course of the life flow is upward from the generative organs through the spinal cord. The power center is located in the throat, and as man consciously comes to realize more and more that God is the one Presence and the one Power, and that the real Self is in mastery and dominion, the radiating power of Spirit fearlessly penetrates down from the power center, throughout the body, into every atom of the being, contacting the life forces, harnessing, controlling, and directing the life current, and generating in the being the health-giving, energizing life of Spirit. When the whole being is poised in spiritual power, and athrill with this vitalizing energy, health is bound to manifest.

Often, however, there is an abundant life flow through the body, but because of lack of spiritual

Page 23: A Monthly Magazine issued the first of the month by UNITY … · 2019-01-22 · A Monthly Magazine issued the first of the month by UNITY SCHOOL OF CHRISTIANITY, (Inc.) Tenth Street

dominion in the power center, the energy runs off the end of the tongue, or is dissipated in other ways, leaving both mind and body starved and depleted. The one way to stop the waste, to conserve the energy, is to relax quietly in both mind and body, let go all outer effort. Then know that there is in you a spirit of mastery and control that does understand the law of conservation, and know that this power is set into activity within you. Then seek the presence of God, and realize that just as Jesus Christ demonstrated the power of Spirit in perfect control over all the forces of his body, in that he could lay his life down and take it up again, so you, through Jesus Christ, have the same power. As you do realize this truth, you will find that the conserving, discriminating forces of Spirit are set into healthy, hearty operation, and you will be conscious of having within you that power and that ability which conserve and direct constructively all the vital elements, and that the waste only is cast out.

Again, because of lack of balance and equilibrium, there is often too great a flow of the vitalizing energy to one part of the being, while other parts receive none. This sets up a whirlpool of activity in the one part, while the other parts, robbed of the proper nourishment, become inactive. In such cases, the poise and balance of God is the one adjuster. When a decrease in the activity of the vital forces in a certain part is desired, it is well to concentrate at the opposite pole, or opposite extremity of the body. For instance, if the rush of the vital force to the head is too great, the situation may be relieved by concentrating in the feet and serenely holding for the power of a greater understanding. When there is a call for a greater degree of life action in a certain part of the body, say, for instance, in the stomach, the coordinating powers, acting through the stomach, will be massed at that center by concentrating at that point and holding for the expression of life, wisdom, and power.

Page 24: A Monthly Magazine issued the first of the month by UNITY … · 2019-01-22 · A Monthly Magazine issued the first of the month by UNITY SCHOOL OF CHRISTIANITY, (Inc.) Tenth Street

In centering the attention in these different parts, always be sure to hold for the realization of understanding, or of wisdom, or whatever the need may be, in connection with the decrease or increase of the life activities. Unless this is done, the constructive intelligence, or disciple, directing that center, will not be educated in spiritual ways, and you will receive only a temporary benefit, and the treatment will have much the same effect upon mind and body as that of taking a stimulant. Work always for the realization and expression of the Divine Idea needed to demonstrate perfect poise, rather than for mere physical relief.

But no attempt at demonstrating really succeeds which is not founded upon reality, and which has not for its basis spiritual ideas. It requires the power and poise of Spirit to demonstrate spiritually, and it is the spiritual demonstration that counts. “By their fruits ye shall know them.” Even among Truth students there are those who give out impressions of what wonderful spiritual feats they can perform, when the extent of their powers is merely to perceive the possibilities. He who has unfolded spiritual power, not only sees the possibilities, but applies his talents, and accomplishes. Through prayer and spiritual realizations, he forms new states of consciousness “as fast as the sun breeds clouds,” whence issue sustaining light and life. There is a continual increase of health-giving power generated in mind and body by realizing and expressing gentleness, patience, love. To be continuously virtuous in thought and word and action, produces a spiritual force that is deep, strong, unyielding—as sure and as eternal as God himself. To feed the mind continually upon thoughts of peace, generates a force which adds to spiritual power and control. The more spiritual power one accumulates, the less noise he makes in operating his forces, and the surer and easier become his demonstrations.

There are those who have thought that one’s emotions depend upon free will, and that man has absolute

Page 25: A Monthly Magazine issued the first of the month by UNITY … · 2019-01-22 · A Monthly Magazine issued the first of the month by UNITY SCHOOL OF CHRISTIANITY, (Inc.) Tenth Street

power over them. This is true only after man has come into an understanding of his spiritual powers. In many cases, the soul of man is connected with certain sensitive nerve batteries where all the movements, not only of his own being, but the movements of outside forces, are registered, and because of lack of power, because of lack of understanding how to control through the omnipotence and omniscience of Spirit, he is thrown out of balance, and is subjected to error forces that cause him to do and say things for which, in fact, he is not responsible.

Man should realize that Spirit is the foundation of all life’s activities, and that to get good out of life, we must control life. W e must be grounded in Spirit, and the aim of our lives should be to awaken the consciousness to the full light of Spirit, to express in perfect peace and poise the health, joy, and freedom of Spirit. He who understands life, to the degree that he can control life, loves God, and, through Jesus Christ, has power to direct all his own thoughts, words, and acts. He is not to be swerved from his onward course. The same power that bears the eagle up and directs its path across the heavens, and brings it safely to earth again, is also active in man. When man becomes fully aware of this, he lives continually in a strong, serene, trustful, vital activity, absorbing the life-giving energy, the peace and poise, and the inspiration which the Holy Spirit is always ready to pour out upon us all, when we have unfolded the capacity to receive, control, and direct.

I am only one,But still I am one.I cannot do everything,But still I can do something; And because I cannot do everything,I will not refuse to do the something that I can do.

— Edward Everett Hale

PRAYERAmy L. M o f f e t t

H E subject of prayer is a large one. It may be presented from various angles of thought. The value of prayer is understood by a consideration of the fundamentals of prayer.

Prayer is power. It is that silent potency which is ever ready to do for

one whatever he cannot accomplish without it. It is the golden link between the mind of God and the mind of man. Its exercise is man’s divine prerogative.

The value of prayer is quickly recognized when the fundamental nature of God and of man is accepted, not as a vague abstraction, but as a working basis in daily living.

The prayer of petition, or of supplication, is as the scaffolding in the construction of a building. In the words: ‘Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss,” we find one’s effort to pray is recognized W e also find pointed out the reason of failure to receive answer to prayer.

That personal desires cannot change or divert the will of the Father, is shown in the expression of Truth: “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation, neither shadow that is cast by turning.” The prayer of petition, or of supplication, is usually for personal benefit. It overlooks the good of the whole, and therefore “asks amiss.” One no longer uses this form of prayer when the Truth has taught him to pray in the spirit, and with the understanding also.

The fundamental idea pertinent to true prayer is this: Understanding of the nature of God, and of the nature of man, and of the office of prayer. This understanding enables one to pray, believing he has received.

Page 27: A Monthly Magazine issued the first of the month by UNITY … · 2019-01-22 · A Monthly Magazine issued the first of the month by UNITY SCHOOL OF CHRISTIANITY, (Inc.) Tenth Street

Our first consideration in true prayer is God. God in Spirit, not “a” spirit, subject to separation or division into component parts, but that undifferentiated Spirit which is everywhere present, and which is man’s environment.

Understanding of the nature of God acquaints us with the nature of man. God created man in His image and likeness. So God is Spirit and man is Spirit— alike in essence, but unlike in degree. The nature of man, as God created him, is the true nature of all men here and now. The acceptance of the truth that God and man are Spirit, inspires one with courage and faith to expect answer to prayer. In this understanding, man no longer asks: “ Is prayer answered?” H e asks: "How may I learn to fulfill the conditions of true prayer which will result in answer?”

From the study of Truth, we discern that the creative impulse gives man eternal environment. The first function of environment is to sustain, uphold, and support. Environment does all this for man, and without requiring individual recognition thereof. W e may better recognize this function of environment in the more familiar words of Paul: “ In him [God] we live, andmove, and have our being.”

When our attention turns to the life and works of Jesus, we are confronted with a higher manifestation of Spirit than is found in the lives of men in general. From this we understand that environment may act specifically as well as generically, and that the second function of environment is to modify or change man to fulfill the requirements of this higher manifestation.

In the generic sense, God has done all possible for man, in giving him eternal environment. The creative impulse alone does not give to any individual member of the race a consciousness of the divinity of man. It equips him with the image, power to put on the likeness to the image, and provides the way through which it is

Page 28: A Monthly Magazine issued the first of the month by UNITY … · 2019-01-22 · A Monthly Magazine issued the first of the month by UNITY SCHOOL OF CHRISTIANITY, (Inc.) Tenth Street

done. Man cannot live outside of his environment, whether he would or not.

To come under the direct modifying power of the Spirit, each one must desire to know God in the same manner that Jesus did. Nothing less than this specific understanding can fulfill the requirements of true prayer. When one’s desires turn toward God, he starts on the way. This longing for God is graphically set before us in the words of David: “As the hart panteth after the water brooks, So my soul panteth after thee, O God.” Yearning becomes seeking, and seeking opens the door to finding. “Ye shall . . . find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.”

Through inner communion, the whole man comes into direct contact with the Spirit. The intellectual faculties become illumined and subservient to the Spirit. The transforming power of the Spirit is felt, the mind is clarified and quickened, and this influence extends throughout the entire being.

The intellect links one with the world of affairs without. While trained intellect may better prepare one to handle mundane affairs, it does not necessarily prepare him to understand God as Spirit, or to understand the spirit in man which receives inspiration from the A lmighty.

When one lives by intellect alone, he reduces experience to a combination of circumstances which are accepted as fixed and unalterable. Through prayer, the personal thought center is transferred from intellect to spirit. This change enables one to see the Truth and become free. When one is free in Spirit, conditions and circumstances are no longer accepted as fixed and unalterable, but they arrange themselves to verify: “But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thine inner chamber, and having shut thy door, pray to thy Father who is in secret, and thy Father who seeth in secret shall recompense thee.” While it is true that the intellect is an integral part of man’s constitution, it is equally true that it

Page 29: A Monthly Magazine issued the first of the month by UNITY … · 2019-01-22 · A Monthly Magazine issued the first of the month by UNITY SCHOOL OF CHRISTIANITY, (Inc.) Tenth Street

is without ability to meet the complete need of man’s being.

The life of Jesus plainly teaches the subservience of the intellect to the Spirit. All the works of Jesus make plain to us the power of prayer.

Generically speaking, Jesus reveals the nature of God and the nature of man as Spirit. But he does infinitely more than this. He gives one an insight into a more intimate relationship than that of Creator to created. He sets forth specifically that man is the Son of God. In every instance, Jesus turned to God as “my Father,” and he said: “Call no man your father on the earth: for one is your Father, even he who is in Heaven,” and, “ I am the Son of God.” The significance of this relationship of Father and Son, which Jesus gave us, is too vital to be overlooked by any one who realizes the value of prayer. It is the keynote to true prayer.

Generation after generation has thought and lived according to traditional standards which overemphasize intellectual development, and minimize spiritual un- foldment as a practical factor in daily living. In consequence, men find themselves separated in consciousness from God. God is accepted in terms of intellectual coinage: force, nature, etc. But this recognition falls short of the Christ standard. It does not offer a satisfactory understanding of the fundamental nature of God and man. It cannot give Jesus the Christ a place of intrinsic worth to the race, and it places no value on prayer. If intellect’s recognition of God accepts Jesus the Christ, it must do so on the basis of exceptional divinity and say: “He is divine,” “ I am mortal.” This recognition of God might satisfy the head, but it can never satisfy the heart. In Truth both the head and heart are unified in understanding, and satisfied in prayer.

Truth teaches us all to pray to God as our Father. Without this familiar touch as part of one’s inner experience, he cannot commune; he can only petition or

Page 30: A Monthly Magazine issued the first of the month by UNITY … · 2019-01-22 · A Monthly Magazine issued the first of the month by UNITY SCHOOL OF CHRISTIANITY, (Inc.) Tenth Street

supplicate. H e could not pray, believing he received. To understand how to pray believing “ye receive,” or, to accept first in Spirit, is such an important factor of true prayer that it is necessary to learn, through this understanding, how to pray aright. The effectual, fervent prayer of the righteous man avails much.

Having accepted the Truth that we are the sons of God, we can come to the Father in childlikeness and in this remembrance: “Whatsoever ye shall ask in myname, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.” The study of Truth in relation to prayer, shows us that it is not a question of intellectual debate, but a question of the logic of the Spirit. “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are the sons of God.”

God cannot change. He must forever remain the same in nature and in action. Man as the image of God does not change, but before each one becomes aware that he is the image of God, he must change. He must come into direct contact with the power of the Spirit, and this change is wrought through true prayer.

W e have found that David yearned for God, even as we. W e have learned that Jesus knew God, and so must we. W e must know him just as Jesus did. The life and the works of Jesus give every one a wonderful example. In every instance Jesus was true to his divine origin. “ I and the Father are one.” He kept his mind clear of mortal thought obstructions, and the will of the Father was uppermost in his mind. “Not my will, but thine, be done.”

Jesus left no doubt in the mind of the Truth seeker about the value of prayer. He prayed, taught men how to pray, and gave them a model prayer in the Lord’s Prayer. He lived a successful life, the most successful ever lived, by constancy to prayer; and he said: “Go, and do thou likewise.”

Each one accepts this divine command who worships in spirit and in truth. He realizes that he, too, succeeds

Page 31: A Monthly Magazine issued the first of the month by UNITY … · 2019-01-22 · A Monthly Magazine issued the first of the month by UNITY SCHOOL OF CHRISTIANITY, (Inc.) Tenth Street

in the same degree that he accepts God as the Father, and prays believing he has already received.

The Lord’s Prayer covers the needs of man’s threefold nature. It has been used with wonderful results, and may be used until the Spirit teaches each one to go unto the Father with words of his own individual selection.

“FULLNESS OF TIME"No matter with what object you believed you first

started out to seek the knowledge of the truth, it was in reality because it was God’s “fullness of time” for you to arise and begin to claim your inheritance. You were no longer to be satisfied with, or under bondage to, the elements of the world. Think of it! God’s “fullness of time norv for you to be free, to have dominion over all things material, to be no longer bond servant, but a son in possession of pour inheritance! “Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit.”

W e have come to a place now where our search for the truth must no longer be for the rewards; it must no longer be seeking a creed to follow, but it must be the living a life. In these simple lessons we have just taken the first steps out of the Egyptian bondage of selfishness, lust and sorrow, toward the land of liberty, where perfect love and all good reign.

Every right thought we think, every unselfish word or action, is bound by immutable laws to be fraught with good results. But in our walk we must learn to lose sight of results, which are the “loaves and fishes.” W e must seek rather to consciously be the truth, to be love, to be wisdom, to be life (as we really are unconsciously), and let results take care of themselves.

Every soul must take time daily for quiet and meditation. In this lies the secret of power. No one can grow in either spiritual knowledge or power without it. Practice the presence of God just as you would practice

music. No one would ever dream of becoming a power in music except by spending some time daily alone with music. Daily meditation alone with God seems some way to focus Divine Presence within us and to our consciousness.—H . Emilie Cady.

LIFE OMNIPRESENT And when he was entered in, he saith unto them.

W hy make ye a tumult and weep? the child is not dead, but sleepeth. And they laughed him to scorn. But he, having put them all forth, taketh the father of the child and her mother and them that were with him, and goeth in where the child was. And taking the child by the hand, he saith unto her, Talitha cumi; which is, being interpreted, Damsel, I say unto thee, Arise. And straightway the damsel rose up, and walked.—M ark’s Narrative.

GOD’S MERCY There’s a wideness in God’s mercy

Like the wideness of the sea; There’s a kindness in his justice

Which is more than liberty. For the love of God is broader

The wise man is governed by God, and on this account is blessed.—Sextus.

SUNDAY LESSONSLesson 7, A u g u s t 14, 1921.

Unity Subject—TRAINING TH E EMOTIONAL NATURE.

International Subject— PAUL IN ICONIUM AND LYSTRA.— Acts 14:8-20.

8. And at Lystra there sat a certain man, impotent in his feet, a cripple from his mother’s womb, who never had walked.

9. The same heard Paul speaking: who, fastening his eyes upon him, and seeing that he had faith to be made whole,

10. Said with a loud voice, Stand upright on thy feet. And he leaped up and walked.

1 1. And when the multitude saw what Paul had done, they lifted up their voice, saying in the speech of Lycaonia, The gods are come down to us in the likeness of men.

12. And they called Barnabas, Jupiter; and Paul, Mercury, because he was the chief speaker.

1 3. And the priest of Jupiter whose temple was before the city, brought oxen and garlands unto the gates, and would have done sacrifice with the multitudes.

14. But when the apostles, Barnabas and Paul, heard of it, they rent their garments, and sprang forth among the multitude, crying out

15. And saying. Sirs, why do ye these things? We also are men of like passions with you, and bring you good tidings, that ye should turn from these vain things unto a living God, who made the heaven and the earth and the sea, and all that in them is:

18. And with these sayings scarce restrained they the multitudes from doing sacifice unto them.

19. But there came Jews thither from Antioch and Iconium: and having persuaded the multitudes, they stoned Paul, and dragged him out of the city, supposing that he was dead.

20. But as the disciples stood round about him, he

rose up, and entered into the city: and on the morrow he went forth with Barnabas to Derbe.

SILENT P ra y e r— I am poised in the assurance that God is good, and that he is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

W e sometimes find within ourselves states of consciousness which have been inherited from the nature side of parentage; for example, the belief in inefficiency. This symbolizes the man who is “impotent in his feet, a cripple from his mother’s womb, who never had walked.” The inefficiency is described as in the “feet,” the feet being typical of the understanding. The region in which the disciples are represented as preaching, is the wild, uncultured Lycaonia, which means rvolfland. The people were nature worshipers, passionate, and emotional. When Paul healed the lame man by fixing his eyes upon him and telling him to stand upright on his feet, the people at once cried out that the gods had come down to earth in the form of men. They called Barnabas, Jupiter, and Paul, Mercury. They proceeded to prepare a sacrifice of oxen in honor of these two men.

In the subconscious region of our own nature, we find these inherited conditions holding in abeyance some natural function; these, when released by the word of Truth, liberate waves of emotion, which are not always wise nor stable. The emotions are not to be depended upon, in their judgment. They pour out a flood of praise and adoration one moment, and a whirlwind of censure the next. When they are not trained and established in Divine Understanding, they are moved by every passing thought. The Lycaonians wanted to offer sacrifices to Paul and Barnabas as gods from heaven, but when the jealous Jews made charges against Paul and Barnabas, the Lycaonians turned right about;

Page 35: A Monthly Magazine issued the first of the month by UNITY … · 2019-01-22 · A Monthly Magazine issued the first of the month by UNITY SCHOOL OF CHRISTIANITY, (Inc.) Tenth Street

they stoned Paul to insensibility, and threw his body out of the city.

The lesson is: W atch your emotional nature. Do not esteem as miraculous, nor as of the gods, the great uplifts which come to you in moments of spiritual illumination. You are simply developing the inherent powers of your own being. Cultivate stability and poise of soul. Do not be blown about by every wind of doctrine, but quietly and dispassionately weigh in the balance of your own higher understanding, every wave of thought that sweeps through your soul. Do not attribute the powers of your own spirit to some outside Godlike source. “W hy do ye these things? W e also are men of like passions with you, and bring you good tidings, that ye should turn from these vain things unto a living God.”

parted asunder one from the other, and Barnabas took Mark with him, and sailed away unto Cyprus:

3. Him would Paul have to go forth with him; and he took and circumcised him because of the Jews that were in those parts: for they all knew that his father was a Greek.

4. And as they went on their way through the cities, they delivered them the decrees to keep which had been ordained of the apostles and elders that were at Jerusalem.

S i le n t P ra y e r :— 1 worship Cod in Spirit and in Truth.

Our text takes up the story of Paul’s ministry, just after the decision at Jerusalem which followed the dispute at Antioch. This dispute concerned the Gentile converts to Christianity: whether or not they were to observe the Jewish religious customs. It was decided that converts from the Gentiles should not be “troubled” with Jewish ceremonies, but that they should follow four simple rules instead. The spirit of Christ’s teaching was regarded as paramount, and the rites and ceremonies of the church were regarded as secondary.

The strict follower of Christ must concern himself today with the spiritual principles of Christ’s teaching, rather than with the forms and customs of the church.

Paul represents the regenerated human will in its endeavor to promulgate Truth. In this lesson, it is shown that he is about to go on a missionary journey

Page 37: A Monthly Magazine issued the first of the month by UNITY … · 2019-01-22 · A Monthly Magazine issued the first of the month by UNITY SCHOOL OF CHRISTIANITY, (Inc.) Tenth Street

with Barnabas. The esoteric meaning of Barnabas is, son of comfort.” Barnabas represents tolerance, for

giveness, and kindness. Barnabas wanted to take John Mark with them.

John means, “God’s gift,” and Mark means, “polite, shining.” Paul did not like the idea of John’s going, because John, on a former trip, had withdrawn from them at Pamphylia (mixture of nations).

Paul was rather intolerant and unforgiving, but Barnabas recognized in John a gift of God, even though he seemed to have failed in a former work.

John Mark had two natures: one, a polite and brilliant exterior that was affected by the mixed state at Pamphylia; the other, a deep spiritual nature, which was called out and developed by the confidence which Barnabas placed in him. John’s true worth was proved in his subsequent ministry with Barnabas.

There is that in us which seeks to do things in a strenuous way, having no tolerance for qualities which are in process of development. This inclination often mistakes green fruit for bad fruit. W e all have wonderful spiritual possibilities, but they must be brought out and made strong by prayer and use.

W e must have patience, even though we seem to fail when at Pamphylia, mixture of nations. If we continue to develop our gift of God, we shall find our spiritual work.

Barnabas and John sailed to Cyprus, which means fairness. Paul chose Silas to go with him. Silas means “woody,” and represents the rugged state of mind which goes well with the Paul consciousness.

They visited Cilicia, which means “rolling,” and Derbe, which means “sting,” and Lystra, which means “dissolving.” These names indicate that their work required great effort, and that it was not altogether pleasant. W e find that forceful thoughts often stir up opposition, while gentle thoughts bring us a peaceful victory.

S i le n t P ra y e r— The energy, fervor, and enthusiasm of the Spirit, overcome all obstacles.

The entering into Europe, of Paul and his companions, is symbolical of opening up in the consciousness the word of Truth where it had never before been realized.

The body is pervaded by a life and intelligence which have formed a little world of their own. It has no knowledge of the higher life of the Spirit. It has to be regenerated born from above. The spiritual spark is carried by the converted will, Paul, and it has to meet obstacles of various kinds. The lands and towns through which Paul passed, represent some of these. For instance, Phrygia means dry, barren; Galatia, white, but lifeless; Asia, muddy, boggy. The Holy Ghost forbade Paul’s speaking the word in Asia.

When guided by the Spirit, we are led to develop along the lines of least resistance, and where the conditions are most favorable. W e should not be discouraged when we strike the barren places, nor waste our time in trying to quicken the localities that are at present too negative to respond. It is the experience of those who regenerate the body that a certain fiery element is necessary, to give action to the negative parts. This is referred to in this lesson. IVIacedoma means

Page 40: A Monthly Magazine issued the first of the month by UNITY … · 2019-01-22 · A Monthly Magazine issued the first of the month by UNITY SCHOOL OF CHRISTIANITY, (Inc.) Tenth Street

burning adoration, and is representative of that enthusiasm and energy of Spirit which set the whole man aflame. It is necessary that this phase of the consciousness be cultivated, because without it, a certain passivity sets in that is content with the battle only half won.

Philippi means powerful and warlike. It is necessary to stir up this fiery power in the man when he gets into a dry, or a watery, or a barren state of consciousness. The vision of the man in Macedonia crying, “Come over into Macedonia and help us,” is the discernment of this inner fervor which needs stirring up, and the stirring up can be accomplished by affirming that all obstacles and barriers to the supremacy of Spirit are now cleared away. Then, like Paul, make a straight course to Neapolis, the new city, or center of action. This means to concentrate all your energies on the accomplishment of your purpose, and you will surely achieve.

Paul and Silas represent the will and the understanding in their work of clearing up the consciousness. Paul had cast the demon of “divination” out of the damsel who “brought her masters much gain by soothsaying.” This “damsel” is that in man which believes in the occult and the mysterious; that there is a realm

Page 42: A Monthly Magazine issued the first of the month by UNITY … · 2019-01-22 · A Monthly Magazine issued the first of the month by UNITY SCHOOL OF CHRISTIANITY, (Inc.) Tenth Street

hidden just beyond the surface, in which the unknown and the past and the future may be revealed. Belief in the occult is the result of ignorance and superstition. Victor Hugo said, “There are no occult truths; all is luminous.” The superstition that centers in the occult should be denied out of consciousness in the name of Truth demonstrated, the Lord Jesus Christ.

Those who believe in revelations from the occult realm, think that it is the source of profit—that it brings gain in science, literature, and finance. When their revenue from this source is cut off, they retaliate by invoking the law which imprisons the will and the understanding.

But the incarceration is temporary, because of the power of the illumination that lies back of these faculties. Instead of being discouraged and sorrowful, Paul and Silas sang and praised and prayed, with the result that their prison doors were opened.

It is said that Christianity is the only religion which inspires men to sing. Mohammedanism has no hymnal; neither has Hinduism nor Buddhism. “No glorious outburst of sacred song from the hearts and lips of the people ever awake the echoes of any Oriental temple,’ says an historian of religious movements. Singing sets the thoughts into action, and they become dynamic. When there is a conscious connection with the great source of energy. Divine Mind, the very foundations of the mental prison are shaken; all the doors are thrown open, and those who were bound, are set free.

Paul never missed an opportunity to make a convert. Instead of escaping from the jail and the jailer, he remained, and converted the jailer and his family.

When, through the power of the Spirit, you attempt to make a demonstration, do not leave it incomplete. Bring into harmonious relationship, all the spiritual faculties necessary to the complete demonstration. Then you will finish what you have undertaken.

Fear makes men timid and weak. When they

Page 43: A Monthly Magazine issued the first of the month by UNITY … · 2019-01-22 · A Monthly Magazine issued the first of the month by UNITY SCHOOL OF CHRISTIANITY, (Inc.) Tenth Street

should follow up a victory by standing their ground and declaring their Roman citizenship, they sneak away. Paul claimed everything in sight— and out of sight. When the city authorities arrested him, he demanded the rights of a Roman; when the church authorities questioned his teaching, he told them of his heavenly vision. Fearlessness was the strong point in his character. Truth, to him, came first, and the things of the world, second. This is what made him the Great Apostle—he was will personified in conjunction with understanding. When these are joined in consciousness, man is equal to any emergency.

Ye men of Athens, in all things I perceive that ye are very religious.

23. For as I passed along, and observed the objects of your worship, I found also an altar with this inscription, To a n U n k n o w n G o d . What therefore ye worship in ignorance, this I set forth unto you.

24. The God that made the world and all things therein, he, being Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;

25. Neither is he served by men’s hands, as though he needed anything, seeing he himself giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;

26. And he made of one every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, having determined their appointed seasons, and the bounds of their habitation;

27. That they should seek God, if haply they might feel after him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us:

28. For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain even of your own poets have said.

For we are also his offspring.29. Being then the offspring of God, we ought not to

think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and device of man.

30. The times of ignorance therefore God overlooked; but now he commandeth men that they should all everywhere repent:

31. Inasmuch as he hath appointed a day in which he will judge the world in righteousness by the man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.

G o ld en T e x t— In him me live, and move, and have our being.—Acts 17:28.

S i le n t P ra y e r— “Cod is Spirit: and they that ivorship him must worship in spirit and truth.”

The Truth stands in the midst of intellect’s attempts at religious worship, and commends them, yet proclaims their shortcomings.

The intellectual concept of God is always relative. The Athenians were purely intellectual. The more than three thousand images and statues of gods, demi-

gods or heroes, which filled the city at this time, testified to their material concepts of the deity.

This is typical of the mind that is not enlightened as to the true character of God. Yet, notwithstanding all these concrete concepts of God, there is a yearning to know the unrevealed Spirit, and the mind is ever reaching out for a fuller realization of its source. This is the altar with the inscription, “To an Unknown God.”

Paul did not call the Athenians ignorant. H e saidto them, What therefore ye worship in ignorance, [notunderstanding its name, attributes, and nature] this I set forth.

God is spirit. Spirit has no form nor condition, but is formless. The character of God as Absolute Being cannot be comprehended by the intellect. The Truth therefore, makes a total denial of all beliefs about Godo a temporal character. God does not require anythingat our hands, being the source of all. Even personality is not recognized by Divine Mind, which knows only unity and oneness in all men and in all nations.

The mind of man cannot find God through any of the sense avenues, but one phase of his being may be perceived by feeling “after him;” that is, through the affectional nature, for “God is love.”

A splendid treatment for the realization of Omnipresence is this, “ In him we live, and move, and have our being.” The one Life permeates every fiber of our organism; we move in it, and it moves in us; our true being is involved in this one Essence and Cause of all.

When the Truth has been declared, and has been received by the intellect, a new state of consciousness is se; JP ;. A day,” or open state of the mind, has been established. Then follows a change of thought, which is repentance. When we get the activity of the Truth going in our minds, the seed germ of our being, which is the Christ of God, is resurrected; then we have within us the assurance that this uplift is for all.

The thoughts of the intellect do not all at once fall

Page 46: A Monthly Magazine issued the first of the month by UNITY … · 2019-01-22 · A Monthly Magazine issued the first of the month by UNITY SCHOOL OF CHRISTIANITY, (Inc.) Tenth Street

into line with the Truth. Some mock, some defer the acceptance to another time. But there are the elect few who form the nucleus of a strong church, which is a new state of consciousness where spiritual thoughts gather.

THOUGHT BECOMES ACTION Thought, transcending itself, becomes action. By

governing one’s thoughts, unworthy acts are denied birth, and by so doing men learn to live the life of soul in which the image of spirit is ever decipherable. By self-mastery the greatness of our soul becomes apparent, and the nature of God is apprehended.

Man is a God in the process of construction, and his apparent failures are as necessary to his final evolutions as the chips that strew the ground are necessary to the falling of the tree. Be patient, therefore, with the foibles of your fellows. They are necessary to the perfection of your own self-control.— The Cleaner.

HOW SHALL I KEEP MY BOY INSUNDAY SCHOOL

Louise C. NewmanIt is better not to try to force your boy to go to

Sunday school. You may be able to send his body, but if his soul stays outside, you will engender an idea of separation which may later develop into an attitude of conscious rebellion, which in turn will manifest in the body as resistance.

Many of childhood’s claims of inharmony come under this law.

When the boy says, “I won’t,” find out why, from his point of view. Then, if it be possible, give his point of view consideration.

If for any reason his view is not good, explain to him exactly why, and clear his mind of the wrong idea, always remembering that there is a principle of right thinking, and that your own point of view may be capable of betterment.

Be willing to change your mind and grow with your child.

If you think you have attained, you have ceased to grow.

Supposing you have not known before, that you had time to think. Start now.

If your boy longs for the woods on Sunday—The woods were God’s first temples!Give him Wood Lore,” or “Forest Fancies,” to

read during the week; and on Sunday go with him into Nature’s great Truth schoo],

Page 48: A Monthly Magazine issued the first of the month by UNITY … · 2019-01-22 · A Monthly Magazine issued the first of the month by UNITY SCHOOL OF CHRISTIANITY, (Inc.) Tenth Street

Teach him to find the silence there, and the wonder and beauty of life.

There is no work in your household more important than driving the money changers from your boy’s temple.

Afterward, there will be a desire in his heart to go where he may learn more of these things.

He wants to play tennis, and you don’t approve of games on Sunday.

(You have an old lamp which needs a new wick.)You would not deny your child, swiftness to the eye,

sureness to the arm, instant response in the body, lightness to the feet, strength to the shoulder, a clear and calculating mind, perfect circulation, grace and harmony in action; and these are the qualities he is acquiring out of doors in the sunshine of God’s love.

The sabbath is a state of mind. Do not bind him to a building; teach him to see God everywhere. This is not a stand against the Sunday school, but a plea for the boy who is so often misunderstood and tabulated “bad” because he “won’t go to Sunday school.”

Please, Mother dear, temper justice with mercy, and silently know that “God is in his holy temple,” and all is well with his world. As the boy is released from the idea of bondage to the Sunday school law, he realizes his freedom in Spirit, and wants to do the thing that is good for him.

SPEAKING THE WORD FOR SUCCESS IN FARMINGA lice L. R u t h

Mrs. Ransom is a sort of local Solomon, inasmuch as her advice is sought on a wide range of practical problems. I listened with much interest to the advice she recently gave Mrs. Lathrop, who, from a distant, drought stricken district, is visiting her sister, Mrs. Ransom’s neighbor.

“W e have had crop failure for four years,” began

Page 49: A Monthly Magazine issued the first of the month by UNITY … · 2019-01-22 · A Monthly Magazine issued the first of the month by UNITY SCHOOL OF CHRISTIANITY, (Inc.) Tenth Street

Mrs. Lathrop. “Many farmers have lost everything, and one more failure will ruin us, too. My sister, Mrs. Friend, says that you always have the right remedy for everything because you have faith in God. I have faith, and I’ve prayed, but it’s never brought rain.”

“To my faith I add understanding, and my faith is abundantly increased by understanding,” affirmed Mrs. Ransom. “When your husband plants his seed wheat, he has faith that it will produce a crop; otherwise, he wouldn’t plant it. He also understands that it must be good seed, planted in season; and it must have good soil and sufficient moisture to germinate, grow, and mature. You see, he has an understanding faith to a degree, but it falls short when he fears lack of rain. Now, my dear Mrs. Lathrop, our premise is this: ‘Our bodily conditions and our surroundings are the out- picturing of our thoughts and words.’ The Scriptures are so full of this idea, I wonder that it has been so long overlooked.

“ ‘Out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.’ ‘By thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.’ ‘That which proceedeth out of the mouth, this defileth the man.’ These are the words of Jesus Christ.

“Centuries before this, it was written: ‘As he think- eth within himself, so is he.’ ‘He that guardeth his mouth keepeth his life. ‘Whoso keepeth his mouth and his tongue Keepeth his soul from troubles.’ ‘He that loveth pureness of heart, For the grace of his lips the king will be his friend.’ ‘Keep thy heart with all diligence; For out of it are the issues of life.’ ‘Put away from thee a wayward mouth. And perverse lips put far from thee.’ ‘The tongue of the wise is health. The lip of truth shall be established for ever.’ ‘A man shall be satisfied with good by the fruit of his mouth.’

“These are only a few of the many scriptural statements showing the power of thoughts and words to control our lives. The word is the seed, the thought in-

volved in the word is the life principle, that which gives the word power. Just as the life germ in the wheat seed causes it to sprout and grow and multiply, so, ‘Death and life are in the power of the tongue.’ Knowing this wonderful law of the power of the word to bring bodily and material riches, should give you strength and courage to meet and master every situation.”

Mrs. Lathrop had followed Mrs. Ransom’s reasoning very closely.

“ It all sounds very logical,” she said, “but what words could one use to produce such rich results; and what terrible words have we been using to bring about such utter failure?”

“ I’ll explain a little about the failure first, and then take up the remedy,” Mrs. Ransom resumed, “but keep this thought in mind: Destructive words tear down;constructive words build up.

“ In the history of every new country, crop failures have been frequent, because frontiersmen come there with the consciousness of lack; they talk pessimistically of the prospect, and they fear failure. Job said, ‘The thing which I fear cometh upon me.’ He voiced a law of mind. Fear thoughts and fear words are sure forerunners of the thing that is feared. Drive out such fears.

“How many people in your own community have you heard speak words like these: ‘It looks like another dry season. It is just one crop failure after another here. This year will be our finish.’

“When the clouds gather and it looks like rain, how many look woefully at the sky and say: ‘O h! it won’train; all signs fail in dry weather. This country is doomed, anyway.’ All such words bind the conditions firmer and increase the distress.

“How much better to say joyously and thankfully: ‘See the clouds; the rain is coming; hear the patter of the raindrops; see the grass brighten’— and have faith that God will make your words come true.

“When Jesus raised the widow’s son from the dead.

Page 51: A Monthly Magazine issued the first of the month by UNITY … · 2019-01-22 · A Monthly Magazine issued the first of the month by UNITY SCHOOL OF CHRISTIANITY, (Inc.) Tenth Street

he spoke the words, ‘I say unto thee, Arise.’ And the young man lived. When he stood by the tomb of Lazarus, he cried with a loud voice, ‘Lazarus, come forth; and he who had been dead for four days, came forth. In either case, if Jesus had said, ‘It is of no use, when one is already dead,’ there would have been no history of the mighty miracle to record. In all his healing, even in his absent healing, he spoke the word.”

“But, Mrs. Ransom,” interposed Mrs. Lathrop, “we could not speak the words with the power that Jesus did, and have them come to pass.”

“Perhaps not at first,” granted Mrs. Ransom, “but you could certainly give them as much power as you have given negative words. Jesus made use of a law that is unchangeable and eternal. You may use it with the same marvelous results if you let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus. He said to his disciples, ‘Greater works than these shall he do.’ The law always holds good that your thoughts and words make your bodily conditions and your environment.

“If you wish the character of your home to be refined, you teach your children to speak respectfully and truthfully, and to avoid slang. The language used in a home is a sure evidence of its character. If you wish prosperity, the Bible is full of prosperity statements. Memorize the twenty-third psalm and repeat it often.

“Deny out of your mind every fear thought; do not let it linger. Declare ‘Divine Order and Justice are now established in my mind and affairs and I am prosperous always, through my consciousness of Jesus Christ.’

“Say it over and over, as you go about your work. Remember to be of good courage, and the Lord shall strengthen your heart.

“Meet every adverse or destructive statement that you hear with a silent denial, and say, ‘I will fear no evil: for thou art with me.’ Speak no unkind thing of any one. Say daily, ‘Let love be made alive in me.’

You may not see how this will make you prosperous; but try it, and good will come unto you and you will have plenty.”

THE LITTLE PRAYER Among the prayers that all day long

Made clamor at the throne.W as one that lost itself in song.

Meant for the Lord alone. Its sweetness reached him clear and strong,

As swift as sigh or moan.

A heart with joy that overbrimmed Sent forth the little prayer;

Its notes an angel might have hymned In heaven’s serenest air.

No tear its brightness had bedimmed; It bore no weight of care.

“Dear Christ, I am so blithe,” it said,“ I am so glad and gay,

I cannot walk with drooping head Upon the radiant way.

But fain I am with thee to tread Each hour and every day.

“And I would bring some joy to thee.There sitting on thy throne;

Oh! let my very gladness be A service all thine own.”

The little prayer went pleadingly In softest undertone.

And Christ, who listened, smiled to hear The tender little prayer.

That had no thought of grief or fear.Nor any weight of care.

The little prayer drew very near His heart, and lingered there.

MOTHERHOOD DEPARTMENT A NEW SONG OF MOTHERHOOD

H e shall not fight for lust of might. The sons of men he shall not slay; His sword shall be a sword of light To bring the larger day.W rapped in this little sleeping frame.Curled in this heart, so small, so deep,A summons out of heaven came,A primal pledge to keep.

0 little dreaming son of mine,1 see creation’s purpose shine. The mother soul that finely hears The music of the brooding spheres Hath told the message thou didst bring. The song that I must sing.Mothers have sung of sword and shield,The splendor of the battle field; My lips shall sing a noble song—The love that conquers wrong.

The power that built the dome of space And curved night’s pillars firm and sure,The love that formed this little face.Hath shaped a purpose radiant, pure.O driving force that will not rest,That swings the suns and pearls the dew,O force that thrills my mother’s breast,Help me to live that purpose through.Amid the tumult of the earth. The shout of arms, the clash of steel. The wail of brutal death and birth,May he be strong to heal.

O little son, O little son.W hat glorious conquests shall be won.W hat huge compelling powers grope

Washington, D. C.—Several months ago I wrote you for prayers for my baby girl, who was suffering from protruding navel. I write to express my thanks and gratitude for her healing; the doctors had given up hope of cure, except by surgical operation later on. May God continue to bless you all in this great work for suffering humanity.— Mrs. B. H.

Buffalo; N. Y .— I want to thank all members of Silent Unity Motherhood department for their earnest and sincere prayers. My baby was born a few days after I received the Motherhood leaflet, which I studied carefully. Th.i doctor claims it was a wonderful case. I passed through confinement with practically no pain, and both baby and I are getting along very nicely.—Mrs. A . C. S.

New Orleans, La.— I wrote you concerning my approaching motherhood. I received a letter and a prayer, and also instructions. Before writing Unity I had always a fear, always a doubt as to whether everything would be all right. At times I would feel worried and would cry; now I feel much better, as it seems to me that, through you, I have found a friend in God, and also a comfort in you. Each day at certain hours I pray, and, no matter what is on my mind. I am greatly relieved and feel much better. Thank you for the interest you have taken in me.—Mrs. W . J. G.

THE UNFAILING RESOURCE And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of

Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there: and Jesus also was bidden, and his disciples, to the marriage. And when the wine failed, the mother of Jesus saith unto him. They have no wine. And Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come. His mother saith unto the servants. Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it. Now there were six waterpots of stone set there after the Jews’ manner of purifying, containing two or three firkins apiece. Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim. And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the ruler of the feast. And they bare it. And when the ruler of the feast tasted the water now become wine, and knew not whence it was (but the servants that had drawn the water knew), the ruler of the feast calleth the bridegroom, and saith unto him, Every man setteth on first the good wine; and when men have drunk freely, then that which is worse; thou hast kept the good wine until now.—John's Narrative.

CLASS THOUGHT AND PROSPERITY THOUGHT

I am a magnet for the abundant health of Spirit, and the one Vitalizing Life flows to me from everp direction. There is no poor health, for health is the Holy Spirit of God, flowing through our minds and bodies. There is no lack of health, for health is the abundant Spirit of God, overflowing from his body into our bodies. There is more health in the universe than we can think. It is a vitalizing energy in the mind. It is a harmonizing power in the body. From every direction, it flows toward us, in swift regenerating tides. It passes into our lungs with the air which we breathe. It pours into our flesh with the health thoughts which we think. By its own livingness in us, it stamps its image on our physiques. It reproduces itself in our upward tendency toward physical perfection. It magnifies itself in us, ever growing, spreading, penetrating our minds, and transforming our bodies into its own sweet livingness.

I am a magnet for the rich Substance of Spirit, and plenty flows to me from everp direction. Substance fills the universe. It exists in the within of man, in the without of nature. It is sensitive to the action of our thoughts, swaying to our mental changes, like the kelp sways to the ocean tides. If our thoughts say, “Substance is out there, beyond my reach,” the mind tide bears the Substance manifestation beyond the reach of the hand. If our thoughts say, “Substance is here, plentiful and all- supplying,” the mind tide sweeps the Substance manifestation within reach of the hand. The thoughts of the mind can be trained so to feel Substance that they will automatically accept it as omnipresent, as they now accept air as being omnipresent. They can be trained so to know the mental nature of Substance, that they will instinctively rely upon its rich plentifulness. The one who trams his thoughts in these truths will never be poor, for Substance will flow in to him from all directions.

EXTRACTS FROM LETTERS

A GENERAL SUGGESTION

It is always wise to search prayerfully for oneself before asking a question about anything concerning which one desires information. The reason for this is, that working out a problem by one’s own efforts always gives to one a certain poise, satisfaction, conservation of force, and strength of character. Such a one comes to realize more fully the inspiration of his indwelling Spirit of Truth—the Divine Self.

W e do not wish to discourage any one from asking us for necessary information or help, for these we are always glad to give. W e simply offer the foregoing suggestion as a means to aid you in self-development.

W e are daily asked many questions, the answers to which might be found easily by the inquirers, if they would but turn to their Bibles, dictionaries, or other books of information, in their own homes. Or if these fail, try a little prayerful thinking and waiting on the Lord, for from him, if you have faith, you will receive your answer.

A question that brings out some truth which will prove beneficial to our readers in their spiritual growth and overcoming is always welcomed by us, and the explanation is printed in our magazine as we have room for it.

O M NIPRESENT HEALING

Will you publish in Weekly Unity or Unity Magazine a statement for such petty annoyances as chapped hands and cracked hands, which oftentimes even Truth students allow themselves to be bothered with.

Just a “statement” will not meet the need of cracked and chapped hands. It is not sufficient to think about our hands and repeat some words of prayer. W e must learn to enter into our hands with our conscious thought and word, and realize the everywhere present, all-sufficient spiritual life, flowing freely into them, quickening,

Page 59: A Monthly Magazine issued the first of the month by UNITY … · 2019-01-22 · A Monthly Magazine issued the first of the month by UNITY SCHOOL OF CHRISTIANITY, (Inc.) Tenth Street

harmonizing, and renewing them through and through, and supplying abundantly every chemical needed for their perfect healing and preservation.

W e do not, as a rule, give our hands or feet the attention which they should have. W e should think the Truth into them daily, that the much needed life which restores and keeps whole and efficient, may be given free, full expression in and through them. A thought like the following can be used; speak the words into your hands and fingers:

“God, in his love, pours into you his healing stream of life. It flows freely through every cell and atom of you, cleansing, quickening, harmonizing, and renewing you in every part. The life and love of Spirit which I now acknowledge and realize in you, keep you active, efficient, whole, firm, and beautiful; in the name of Jesus Christ.”

RELY U P O N GOD

Vibrations should be neither feared nor sought; one should pay no attention to them, but should give thanks for the presence of the Infinite Life, Intelligence, and Substance of Spirit, which are at work in the body consciousness. It is some subconscious resistance in the flesh that causes vibrations at the time of the inflow of the Spirit. Vibrations are thrills throughout the body or in some part of it, that can be felt with the outer sense of feeling. One must think about God, and not about the feelings.

When all resistance is put out of the body, the presence of the Life and Substance of Spirit will be indicated by just a warm glow, scarcely perceptible as a physical sensation. The mortal man is so prone to be carried away by his feelings, by that which can be touched, seen, or in some way contacted by the outer senses, that he gives himself up to the senses rather than to the ideas of Divine Mind, which are the real substance and good he is seeking.

Page 60: A Monthly Magazine issued the first of the month by UNITY … · 2019-01-22 · A Monthly Magazine issued the first of the month by UNITY SCHOOL OF CHRISTIANITY, (Inc.) Tenth Street

The psychic senses and the material senses are closely interlaced. W e do not rely on the material senses for our inner guidance; therefore, we cannot put our trust in the very uncertain senses which we call psychic. It is only God who makes this promise: “ Iwill instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go.” Therefore to God we must turn to find our work.

God does not show us weird apparitions at night, does not tear down our health, does not force the burden of another’s problem on us. Those who become sensitive to psychic perceptions feel that they have another’s salvation to work out. They forget that “The words that I say unto you I speak not from myself: but the Father abiding in me doeth his works.”

Begin your work by realizing that you are free, positive and strong. Realize that you are sent to do your own work and no other. You are not only free to do that work, but you are abundantly able to do it well.

T H E HARVEST

When a criminal is guilty of some terrible deed, or if some one repeatedly violates the law, do you believe that the offender should be allowed to go about, a menace to the public; or should he be placed in confinement, or receive punishment ?

In the present condition of affairs, and in man’s present stage of growth and development, there are persons who should be guarded and taught the Truth until they learn to become more law-abiding.

No one has the right to inflict punishment upon another, since there is a higher law than that of man; and through the working of this law each individual reaps justly, according to his sowing. If people were taught this truth: that they reap what they sow, right here and now, in this life; that all sickness, sorrow, accidents, suffering, lack, and death itself, are the direct results of wrong thinking and doing, there would be fewer law breakers.

Page 61: A Monthly Magazine issued the first of the month by UNITY … · 2019-01-22 · A Monthly Magazine issued the first of the month by UNITY SCHOOL OF CHRISTIANITY, (Inc.) Tenth Street

When the race, or the majority of the race, learns to know and to realize the power of good, and the unreality of evil, there will no longer be any fear of harm. Good thoughts will protect the race, and the thought of no one individual can then become a menace to the safety of any one.

W e are all more or less responsible for manifestations of error, even in others. So long as we believe in evil, and magnify it by fearing it and by thinking of it as such a terrible, strong, formidable thing, we help to keep it in evidence. But when we abide in the Truth, when we affirm and believe in the one Presence and the one Power—the Good Omnipotent—denying even the appearance of evil, we help to establish the good in the hearts and minds and lives of all the race.

T H E RICH YOUNG RU LER

The rich young ruler wanted to know what he should do to inherit eternal life. He had kept all the commandments from his youth up; he was a fine young man, and Jesus, looking upon him, loved him. But he lacked one thing; he was very rich, and evidently his heart was set on his riches. It is not a crime to be rich, but “the love of money,’’ we are told in the Bible, “is the root of all evil.” It was necessary for. the rich young ruler, that he might enter into life, to let go of his idol in the outer, that the love of it could be erased from his inner consciousness.

If an inner adjustment is made (God being placed first in the life of the individual), there is no reason why the outer things should be taken away. But some people will not wake up to the fact that a change of consciousness is necessary on their part, until they lose or find themselves in the danger of losing, the idol that they are coveting and loving and giving more attention to than they are giving to the Truth.

The idea you present is good. When one is always conscious of the Source of all Good, and of his oneness

Page 62: A Monthly Magazine issued the first of the month by UNITY … · 2019-01-22 · A Monthly Magazine issued the first of the month by UNITY SCHOOL OF CHRISTIANITY, (Inc.) Tenth Street

162 UNITY

with this Source, and knows how to work in harmony with the Law, that everything he needs may manifest unto him at the right time, there is no need for one to be burdened with even the necessary “things.” One must not, however, become careless and waste the supply that God gives him. A spirit of conservation, in regard to the thoughts, words, life forces, and outer possessions, is needed, that one may sustain a right balance, and that Divine Order and Plenty may be abiding in one’s consciousness and affairs.

MAN IS MASTER

W e try to answer satisfactorily as many questions as we can; but we receive so many letters every day that it is very difficult to answer in detail every question submitted. Some of the questions do not require an answer, even though the correspondent may feel that they do. In such cases they are not mentioned. Sometimes we do not take up questions directly, because we know that it is better for the Holy Spirit to reveal the Truth to the person from within, than for us to try to present it from without.

There is no limit set to the life of man, as far as the principle of Being is concerned. Man limits himself through false beliefs, and brings upon himself sin, sickness, and death. It is not fair to attribute these to G od; nor should one say that they are fate. Let us face matters squarely, admitting that the fault is with us, that our wrong thinking and living bring these evils into our lives. Then it will be possible for us to turn to God lovingly and be healed. There are no conditions outside one that can dominate him in any way, if he has found God and consciously lives, moves, and has his being in Him.

JE S U S CHRIST, T H E SAVIOR

W e believe in Jesus Christ as the Savior of the world. It is not necessary, however, to go through some marked or wonderful experience in order to accept

Christ as one s Savior, and to enter into a consciousness of oneness with God.

All the separation there has ever been between man and God, is the separation man has made in his own consciousness. He has believed himself to be weak and sinful, a child of Satan, and therefore prone to error and suffering; instead of knowing that he is, in reality, the offspring of God, and that he has in embryo all the attributes of the Father.

As soon as man remembers his God and turns his thoughts Godward, he begins to come into a spiritual understanding. As soon as the prodigal son remembered his father’s house, and turned his face and his steps toward home, his father saw him while he was yet a long way off, and ran to meet him, and received him joyfully. All the time he was away, he was still a son, although a disobedient and ignorant one, wasting his substance in riotous living, and reaping in suffering the results of his foolish beliefs and acts.

It is the same with God’s children today. They do not appreciate and receive the good that comes to them through the Spirit of Truth, until they remember that they are God’s children, made in his image and likeness, and begin to love and serve him.

SPIRITUAL METHODS BRING PER FEC T HEALING

The methods of healing you mention are entirely personal and human in their nature, and are not at all based upon the fundamental principle of spiritual healing, namely, that God is the health of his people. They are methods originated by man, and are never any better than man’s limited intelligence can make them. In divine or spiritual healing, the all-knowing Mind of God does the work and brings about a perfect result.

In spiritual healing, the mind is quickened, the moral nature purified, and the body strengthened and made whole. In other words, the entire being is

Page 64: A Monthly Magazine issued the first of the month by UNITY … · 2019-01-22 · A Monthly Magazine issued the first of the month by UNITY SCHOOL OF CHRISTIANITY, (Inc.) Tenth Street

changed, and lifted to a higher degree of expression. The mental cause of disease is removed, making the healing perfect. Through this method, a double result is secured: The healing of the body, and the salvation of the soul. While the material methods you describe may give temporary physical, and even mental, relief, they cannot purify the soul and help the entire man.

Please remember that we do not condemn these methods nor those who use them. W e leave every one entirely free to do as he feels he should do. W e tell all who ask for help that in Spirit there is a perfect remedy for all inharmonious conditions of mind, body, and affairs. W e show them how to be made whole by living in harmony with the Divine Law of Being. W e also tell them that in this way only can they be made whole and well. If they care to use material means as they go along, we make no objection, knowing that they will drop these as soon as they are really quickened by the Spirit. Much of our ministry is with those, and for those, who are still working with doctors. W e pray for all who ask, no matter who they are, or what they are doing. Those who are struggling toward the light, though still held in material bondage, are the ones who need help most, and we are glad to give them our spiritual ministry in the name of the healing Christ.

If you feel that you want spiritual help, while still clinging to material things, we shall be pleased to assist you in every way we can. But you cannot receive the full value of spiritual methods until you give up all idea of being healed by material means. As long as you have more faith in doctors and medicine than you have in God, you will get only partial spiritual results. When your faith is complete, and you trust God perfectly, the full demonstration will be made. Through spiritual understanding will come a wonderful uplift, and you will experience infinitely more good than could possibly come through material methods of any kind.

SILENT UNITY HEALING“ W h a t h ath G o d w ro u g h t!”

HEALTHCasper, Wyo.— God quickly answered your prayers for

my little daughter, M. A. Her fever broke very shortly after you should have received my telegram. A telegram was also sent you last Wednesday noon, from our Unity Study Club, for prayers for my son, T. He was thrown to the pavement, and the back wheel of an auto truck, solid tire, passed over his ankle. Less than two hours after asking for help, the pain ceased, and swelling and discoloration almost entirely disappeared. Yesterday, Monday, he threw away his cane, and now walks with only a slight limp. Those who saw the accident say that a miracle has been performed. Always, I could reason that things spiritual were true, but through your prayers and through appli- cation on my part, I don’t have to reason nor accept blindly. Now I am coming to £non>.— Mrs. M. B. P.

Memphis, Tenn.— Unity has been such a source of help and inspiration to me, this past year, that I feel you are my friends indeed. Sometime ago my little son began stammering badly. I said to myself, “He must be cured, and Unity will help me. I must write them.” I put oif writing for a few days, but kept the thought that he was to be cured, constantly before me, and then I realized that writing was unnecessary, for his stammering had stopped. I feel I owe this to Unity, as you showed me the way to greater faith in God.—Mrs. W. E. A.

Charleston, Mass.— I wrote you for prayers, sometime ago, for eczema on my right wrist. I could hardly believe it at first, but after two days, it was all gone. It had bothered me for a long time, and at the time I wrote to Unity, it was spreading over my arm. I think it a wonderful demonstration of the power of Truth.—M. L.

Louisville, K\).— I wrote you for special prayers for my husband, for recovery from hay fever, and must say that the cough has left him entirely.—Mrs. M. P.

I was, through overwork and exposure, brought down to my bed with severe pains in my head and body, so severe that at times I could not think at all. Friends and neighbors came in, and named the trouble first one terrible thing and then another. I realized, however, when I could think, that I must have help at once, so I asked that a telegram be sent you immediately. This was at noon, the second day of suffering, and at two o’clock of that same day, I witnessed the cleansing Spirit of Jesus Christ pass over me. I immediately arose, dressed myself, after praising God, and went gladly about my work. I accomplished practically a full day’s work in that short afternoon, with not a pain nor an ache. Praise God and bless Unity! I have also awakened to the fact that God has a greater work for me than I am now doing, and I feel anxious to be about my Father’s business. I realize that we are in the last days of revelation; that the harvest is at hand, and reapers are needed in the field. I feel called upon to do all there is for me to do, to bring others into the light. I wish to tell you how much help and comfort I have received from the little leaflet, “The Blessed Word,” by Ella M. Cheshire.—E. M.

Indianapolis, Ind.— I thank God that I am able to write and tell you of the wonderful blessings which I have received since writing you for health and prosperity. I was laid off from work with a very serious attack of appendicitis, and the doctors said that an operation would be the only remedy for me. A friend visited me and advised me to read Unity and to write to you. I did so, and I feel that I am being greatly benefited through prayers and the Holy Spirit; and by the help of God, I went back to work today. I received your letter, and began to regain health and strength immediately. The misery left my back and side, and I was not operated upon.—Mrs. N. L. C.

Washington, D. C.— I wrote you for prayers, to overcome nervousness and fear when speaking in public. Now, I write to give praise and thanks to God and to Unity for the wonderful demonstration. It was the first time I had ever spoken with calmness and ease. May God bless Unity and the good work.— Miss M. A . W.

Los Angeles, Calif.— Words cannot express my appreciation to God and to you for the wonderful healing I have received through your prayers. I have been healed of a complaint of years’ standing, a condition caused by childbirth, eighteen years ago. I feel grateful to God and to you. The doctors said that I must be operated upon for tumor. I have been relieved of that, also. We have been

Henrietta, Texas— I thank you for what you have done for my son. I wrote you that he had been having boils on his neck, nearly all spring, and that we feared one was a carbuncle. You may discontinue prayers for him, as he is entirely well, and has not a scar.—L. H. S.

Houston, Texas— You may discontinue prayers for me, as my ear is healed. Praise God and Unity! I quit explaining to people what the matter was. I held that my ear was healed. Mother takes the Unity Magazines, and they are wonderful. We read and reread them many times. I wonder how people get along without these uplifting and inspiring little magazines. They help one to live, and to be happy and well. Mother is using her second ProsperityBank, and she has had better success in her work. L.H. G.

Dallas, Texas— I thank you for the great joy that has come to us through our boy’s having recovered his speech, hor eleven years he had stammered, and for the past six months his condition had been worse. Some friends, seeing his condition, referred him to Unity. The friends also gave him one of your monthly magazines. Unity, and this he read. Last Wednesday, May 18, the change came. When his teacher called upon him, he arose and recited his lesson without hesitancy.—Mrs. A . V. IV.

told me that I had appendicitis, and that the only thing that would save me was an operation; they also said that I had a floating kidney, and it would be necessary to remove it.I could not do any kind of work. My back was so weak I was helpless for three weeks. A friend advised me to read Unity, and to write to you. I did so, and in three days there was a change in me and I am a well woman today— can wash, iron, and do all my housework in the mornings and then go to my place of employment in the afternoons. I run an elevator six hours every day. I do not look and feel like the same woman. Friends all tell me that I look well and they ask me what kind of medicine or tonic I take. I tell them that I do not use any kind of drugs. Before I learned the Truth, I was taking medicine daily. Oh! how I wish that I could get people to understand this way! I read my Unity magazine, daily, and I thank God and Unity for the wisdom, knowledge, and understanding which I am receiving. I tell every one that the Lord is the best physician and the only physician that I can recommend to them, and that through Unity I learned of this great Physician. When I became bedfast, I weighed only 120 pounds. I have been back at work since April, and I now weigh 131 Yi pounds. You may discontinue special prayers for me. May God forever bless Unity.— N. L. Dunsmuir, Calif.— My husband wrote you for prayers to heal a terrible stomach trouble, and he was instantly healed. He is grateful for God’s help through Unity. He also asked for prosperity prayers, and he has received a large raise in his wages. We asked for prayers for my son who was out of work, and he is in the shop again, with a better opportunity for a raise in wages, than before. I could write you page after page of God’s blessings, which we are receiving day after day, the greatest of them being God s care for his loved one, my “Unity baby,” A., age one year, who was spared after drinking poison. The severe burns were instantly healed, though she drank a very deadly poison.— Mrs. J. M.

Netv York, N. Y .— I wrote to you a while ago, asking your help in prayer for overcoming sleeplessness. I thank God and you for restful sleep. I have slept steadily every night for a week or more. I feel refreshed and well now. Thank you, kind Christian friends.— G. M. F. E.

PROSPERITYTulsa, Olfla.— Words cannot express what Unity has

been to us. It has completely settled family troubles, made us more healthful, kind, loving, and patient; and more than all else, we have found God. W e now tithe every week, and we try always to watch our thoughts. The big deal’ in which we telegraphed for your help, came through. I want to thank you, dear Unity, for all the wonderful help you have given us. We have "Lessons in Truth,” now, and all are studying these lessons.— C. L.

Atlanta, Ca.—Some few months ago, I received one of your Prosperity Banks, and one of my friends, to whom I sent Unity for one year, just wrote me this morning, telling me that I would never know the good I had accom- phshed in her life by sending Unity to her. She seems to have a much better understanding of God’s truths than ever before, and she is a Christian. I am so thankful that I thought to send it to her, and am happy to know that she has been so greatly benefited.—Mrs. M. W.

Seattle, Wash.— Your prayers for employment may be discontinued. I received work just as soon as I had faith to believe that God, the Father, was able to provide for me in every way. I gratefully thank Silent Unity for the prayers and wonderful truth given me.— G. M. S.

Columbus, Ga.— I wrote to you to help me find my pocketbook. I found it. I cannot thank God and Unity enough for what God has done for me, through Silent Unity. I said that I wanted to give Silent Unity a token of love for finding my pocketbook. The answer came back:

Give one tenth. Bless the Lord for answers from the still consciousness. I feel that the Divine Love of God will direct me.—Mrs. E. D. B.

Brooklyn, N . Y .— I have been trying earnestly to follow your teachings, and have repeated many times daily the two prayers you sent me: “I put myself and all of my affairs in the care and keeping of Infinite Love and Wisdom; that which is for my highest good shall surely come to me.” And, The Spirit of the Lord goes before me, and makes easy and successful all my way. These prayers have done me much good. Not only did they open the way for a new position, with an executive who is a real Christian; but they also brought two increases in salary.—Mrs. F. N. G.

Jackson, Mich.— You may discontinue prayers for my husband. He went to work the 4th of April, and we are so thankful for your prayers. God is good, and I surely do

appreciate Unity. It is so filled with messages of love and truth.—Mrs. A . E. B.

Indianapolis, Ind.— I wired you last night: “Financial difficulty; need immediate relief.” I received temporary relief this afternoon, at about three o’clock. I consider this a positive demonstration. God knows I am grateful.—H. E.K.

East St. Louis, III.—Two weeks ago, I asked for prayers for E. T. He has now secured a position, for which I am most grateful. I also asked prayers for W. S., in disposing of his car. The car has been sold, so you may discontinue prayers. I have received my Prosperity Bank, and have begun to study "Lessons in Truth.” The help I have received from the publications I purchased of you, is inestimable.—Mrs. M. S.

Dallas, Texas— I wrote you a few weeks ago, asking for prayers that our business might be successful. I am very glad to tell you that we have been prospering. I know there can be no failure when you put your trust in God. Through your prayers, we have been blessed in many ways, and we pray that Unity will continue to grow and prosper in its great help to humanity. You may publish this if you will, for I should like to give my testimony of the great good that has come to me through faith and prayers.— Mrs. J . H . G .

Balder, Mont.— It is with a heart full of gratitude to God and to you, for the blessings of spiritual understanding, health, and prosperity which I am receiving, that I write these words. I shall ever bless the day I was persuaded to write to Unity and ask for help. We gave one of our copies of Unity Magazine to a neighbor, along with some other magazines, and in a few days, she came again, full of questions and interest. She said, "That is the most interesting little magazine I ever found. Almost every line seems to contain the answer to some of the many questions that I have wanted to find an answer to, for so long. Everything in it seems easy to understand.” You may discontinue your prayers for me.—A. E. S.

Utica, N. Y .— My father had been out of work nearly all winter, and the week I wrote you for help, he was called back to work.—E. J.

Long Valley, N. J.—With a heart overflowing with gratitude for the help you have given us, I want to tell you of our wonderful success in disposing of the stock in the store. By the 1st of April, every thing was sold, and those whom we owed money to, gladly took back the goods

in payment of what was still due them. I wish I could tell you of the love manifested to us by every one, and such real true friendship. We are paying all we owe, and have collected all that is due us. I give thanks to God and to Unity and all of you. We have found a dear little place in the country, and are going there.—Mrs. E. H. IV.

Plaltsmouth, Nebr.— I wrote you for help in a declamatory contest in school. Through your help I won, and also won first place in the district contest held in another town.— E. M. P.r £ ^ a^ more' M d .— Words fail to express how grateful I feel to you for what you have done for me. I have received a much better position than the one I had, and am making twice as much money as I made before. Friends seem to be more sincere. Everything has changed. Instead of dropping one dime into the little Prosperity Bank,1 am dropping from one to five at a time. It is beautiful to feel that heaven is within us and to know that God is closer to us than any part of our body. How I bless the day that I wrote to you, dear Unity. When I look back, I think how wretched I was in health, not able to sleep, and worried and fearful all the time; but how different things are now.—Mrs. O. V. W.

Cincinnati, Ohio— Everything has cleared up, and we are growing beautifully. The Truth of “He that dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty . . . A thousand shall fall at thy side, And ten thousand at thy right hand; But it shall not come nigh thee,” is and has been true here. With your wonderful help, we won, and now Unity will be for the use of all people here. The Lord and Master led the way and will continue to do so. If the whole human race could but become acquainted with Unity and your wonderful hdp, heaven would come upon earth quickly. This love token I bless, and I know it will multiply one thousandfold for you all.—Miss L. T.

Buenos Aires, Argentine, S. A .— I wish to give my testimony regarding a box of books which has been lost twee. I he first time, while crossing from Canada to the United States, it was eight months before it reached me.1 he fast time, it was lost on a railroad in the Argentine.

All human efforts were made by my husband to recover the box, and it was given up as impossible. I never gave up hope, but knew that my box of books had not been stolen. Just a week ago I sent telegrams to different depositors, and two days later I received a wire saying that the box was

found. It was delivered to my home. My husband calls it luck, but I know it is Divine Love and Justice manifesting in me and my affairs, that has brought it to me. God, my Father, is my support and supply, and I shall lack no good thing. I now rejoice in my good. Dear friends, I would be pleased if you would publish this testimony. It may help some soul to have more faith in the power of Divine Love and Justice to restore to us what really belongs to us.— Mrs. J. H . S .

Fairhope, Ala.— I wrote you of Mr. R .’s being out of work, and for help in selling our house. Mr. R. has work, and we have a buyer. You may discontinue prayers. I thank you for your kindness.—Mrs. M. R.

San Bernardino, Calif.— Since we have been filling our Unity Bank, we have built a house to live in; have rented our big house for a good price, and best of all, our baby was healed in one hour’s time. Our word was, Jesus heals.” Praise the Lord, O my soul!—Mrs. M. R.

Florence, Wis.— You may discontinue prayers, for I found my watch, three days after I wrote you for help. I am thankful for the blessing received.—Mrs. M. E.

St. Louis, Mo.—Several weeks ago, I wrote you asking for prayers that we might find a flat, which appeared to be almost impossible, as we had been looking for a place for two months. We thank God that the following Sunday we obtained a nice place through an unexpected source, and we know that it was in answer to prayer.— F. H. D.

Peoria, III.— A few weeks ago, I wrote you for help. I had been asking God for a home of our own for a long time, but was not strong enough to realize it alone. With your prayers, the opportunity presented itself, two weeks ago, for just the amount of money we had, and now we have an acre of ground and a cozy little home paid for. I came to you again, for help in regard to my husband’s business, and while the letter was on its way, God manifested, and all is well. I am realizing each day that God, the All-Good, is all there really is.— G. B. S.

Wilmington, N. C.— I am inclosing part of my tithe for April. The joy we have found through tithing, makes us want to be able to do more all the time toward spreading the good news to others who need it.—Mrs. L. B. S.

Miami, Fla.—Soon after coming to Miami, I wrote you in regard to finding work, and the result was most remarkable. I have been employed from the first day, and I came

here a total stranger.—Miss R. G.

MISCELLANEOUSChicago, III.—Sometime ago you were asked to pray

for me, and I have been greatly benefited. I want to thank you in the columns of your magazine, so every reader may know what help and assistance can come from your prayers.— S. A . M. . , , .

Pittsburgh, Pa.— I am responding to a word of praise that urges for expression, after reading “Seek the Freedom of Christ,” in Weekly Unity, issue of April 23. I know I have received wonderful benefit from it. I dwelt for just a very short time, prayerfully, on the paragraph containing “ It [the Word] is the active, creative Spirit-Presence called the indwelling Christ . . . ” and I received wonderful inspiration therefrom, the dearest understanding I have yet had impressed in my consciousness of the indwelling Christ.— F. H.

Midway, Texas— Through the study of Truth, I am gaining higher ground in knowing and understanding the Divine Law. It has caused me to make up my mind to tithing. Thanks and praise to the good Lord for what I am receiving through the teaching of Truth! I must tell you of this demonstration that came to me yesterday morning. While attempting to get over a wire fence, one of the barbs stuck clear through my thumb nail, and the blood came up through the hole. I held a Truth statement as follows: “ My thumb is Spirit and life, and where there is Spirit and life there can be no pain nor misery.” To my gladness and thankfulness, my thumb has not hurt at all. I am realizing Truth more and more each day.—Mrs. I. B. C.

East Cleveland, Ohio— The answer to my problem seems to be fully covered by the article, Seek the Freedom of Christ,” in this week’s Weekly Unity. Last Saturday and Sunday, I seemingly suffered intense pain for about thirty-six hours before relief came. On receiving my Weekly Unity, Monday morning, I opened it, and the above mentioned article attracted my attention. Upon reading and rereading parts of it, it seemed to illuminate and help me to realize more fully what I must do to cooperate with the Divine Principle. I thank you for your earnest efforts in my behalf. You may discontinue prayers.—Miss C. L. A.

Lebanon, Tenn.— I wrote you for prayers, about three weeks ago, for help to get rid of the tobacco habit. I am now entirely free from this habit. I cannot thank you enough for your help. You may discontinue your ministrations.—/. C. C.

Cincinnati, Ohio— I feel that I must mention the wonderful protection we had last Saturday night. While we were all out, our home was broken into, the party coming in through the dining room window. I had been realizing the

Consecration of the Room,” for about ten days, because I thought it was so beautiful. Although there were valuable jewelry on the dresser, and bonds and money in the house, in the very rooms entered, nothing was taken; that is, nothing but 45 cents that was on a dresser in one of the rooms. An Easter offering box, with money in it, was unmolested. Our friends here cannot imagine how it was, as there has been a series of robberies where homes were entered in like manner, and everything taken. I am learning more every day that God is the only power, and that peace and harmony are in my home.—Mrs. B. K.

Detroit, Mich.— I am writing to tell you that you may discontinue prayers for me. I am feeling splendid, and spiritually a new person. Whatever happens in the future, I know I have found a way to meet it, and I am grateful to you, beyond expression, for making the way clear.— MissW. O.

Almota, IVash.— In answer to my letter asking you for help last month, I have been receiving the most wonderful blessings, and have been drawn into a closer recognition and communion with the Spirit of Christ. I am entirely well, physically, and I am rejoicing in the love of God. I am also demonstrating, many times a day, the wonderful-power and glory of the Presence.—Mrs. I. D. A.

Kent, Ohio— Inclosed find tithe. We are grateful for the opportunity to help in the Unity work. We surely are receiving a wonderful spiritual benefit. I am being guided daily in discerning the Truth. For a long time, I took a great many of Unity’s statements on faith, and now the actual Truth is unfolding, as the petals of a rose. I found a few days ago that I was wavering between Truth and a worldly condition. At once came the words, “Choose you this day whom ye will serve.” I made the choice for Good. I find I am being given wisdom through my dreams.I feel as if I were just waking up, after a long sleep. I have had but a glimpse of His beauty, but I can readily understand why you dear friends at Unity are so happy in his service.—Mrs. S. N.

Rose Hill, Kans.— I enjoy reading Unity Magazine, and I try not to get discouraged. But whenever I feel discouraged, I stop and read Unity a while, and then everything seems brighter, and I can do more.—Mrs. I. H.

Stillwater, O^la.— I have made fast progress within the last month. I have been studying your literature for over five years, and the real meaning has just lately dawned within me. I have finally surrendered my personal self to Christ. I had a beautiful and wonderful revelation of the Father as righteousness within me, a few days ago, after holding the thought, “Every one and everything is good.” “Lessons in Truth” has helped wonderfully to awaken understanding within me. I am so glad that you did not put a price on your teaching; had you done this, I, out of many, would have been without the Truth. I know that where the word is sent, there are no "ifs,” “ands,” “doubts” or “ fears” that go with it.—Mrs. J. G.

East St. Louis, III.— Four years ago today, I received my first demonstration through the prayers of your beloved department, and have, from time to time, sent to you for prayers for various things, and have been more than repaid. I cannot find words to express my gratitude to the Divine Power, and to you, for my many blessings. I feel the only way I can, in anywise, make a return for what I have received, is to help to give the glad tidings to others. By so doing, I shall help to bring sunshine and happiness to those who have been sent to me, and to my home. I have learned the laws of cause and effect through your teachings, and I want to help, all I can, to scatter these blessings broadcast over the land.—Mrs. A . H. B.

Denver, Colo.— I wrote you sometime ago, for prayers for my husband, who was acquiring the liquor habit. Now I want to thank you for your help. Last evening he told me that he had given it up for good, and I believe it, for he has not been drinking for sometime now, and our home is so much happier. How wonderful it is to know that we are one with God, and to receive such blessings through Truth. — Mrs. S. R. B.

Saginaw, Mich.— I received your beautiful letter, and am affirming the prayer every day. I now realize that God answers before we even call. Thank you for your ministry for my son, H., as he is surely developing in the knowledge that is for his highest good. The girl no longer has any influence over him. Let me tell you of another demonstration: He came in and said, “Ma, I no longer care forcigarettes; they make me sick.” I said, “Praise the Good!” That is all I could say. It seemed as though a light had spread all over me.—Mrs. F. C. C.

TRUTH FOR THE KIDDIESThis is our adopted slogan of the present hour!

Because these little ones must be brought into an understanding of their innate power, dominion, and mastery.

W hat a really tragic crime it would be to let them flounder along through life, stumbling and slipping, when, with scarcely turning the hand, we can put them on the sure and safe road to health, joy, power.

Wee Wisdom, our magazine for children, teaches them how to go right within themselves; and, from that infinite source of all good at the center of their being, to draw forth full power to be and to do that which will make them happy and successful men and women.

The August issue of W ee Wisdom celebrates the second anniversary of the magazine, since it has been enlarged and elaborately illustrated. This copy contains even more poems and stories and pictures than are usually found in Wee Wisdom, and that’s “going some.” The September number will begin a series of sewing lessons, invaluable to the girls.

A ll together! “Truth for the Kiddies!"

Let’s do our plain, simple duty by getting Wee Wisdom to His little ones. Only $1.00 a year.

THE UNITY PROSPERITY BANKA ladd in ’s Lam fi

of magic renown, is what one of our Prosperity Bank patrons likens the bank to. We can readily understand this.

Those making application for the bank, write us letters, frequently filled with tales of failure, sadness, and desperation. We send them a bank; they use it faithfully, following instructions carefully, and in an almost incredibly short time, letters come back, relating phenomenal results. One is suddenly able to pay his debts; one has been unexpectedly promoted with a substantial increase in salary; another is provided with a long-looked-for home; still another is on

easy street,” after years of financial strain and stress. No wonder the word “magic” is used in describing these

almost miraculous transformations in affairs. But now let’s see how it all comes about.

These persons, oftentimes in the very slough of despond, have, through their mental attitude of fear and discouragement, closed the avenues of supply. When they begin using the bank drill, their thinking is at once reversed. Fear and anxiety let go their grip. The tension is loosened. It is as if a sluice gate were suddenly opened, allowing the inrush of mighty waters.

Financial worry, fear of want, discouragement, are the sluice gates of the mind. When the thoughts are changed, through a reliance on the Infinite Supply, money, opportunity, home, position, and what not, show forth in answer to the mental call.

The following extract from a letter is self-explanatory:“I can only express my impression of the experiences that

have been mine, by saying that it is exactly as though I possessed the magic ‘Aladdin’s Lamp’ of fable. Rich and unexpected experiences and pleasures come so fast, that I mentally ejaculate over and over again, ‘Another demonstration by the working of God’s power through Unity and my Prosperity Bank!’ ”

Send for a Bank, deposit the amount for Unity Magazine, Weekly Unity, or Wee Wisdom subscriptions for three friends, and prove for yourself that

THE SILENT SEVENTYT h e L o r d a n o i n t e d s e v e n t y o th e r s .—Luke 10:1.

This is the department of Unity work which attends to the distribution of free literature. You who have been benefited by the study of Truth, and desire to help others to see the light, are invited to join the Silent-70 and take up this work. The work is merely what the member chooses to make it; there are no regulations nor obligations. Write us for information about the Silent- 70. W e give the following testimonials:

Represa, Calif. (Prison) — Your cheering letter of the 1 7th received, also the books and other literature. We have three new members, making the total membership of our Truth study class thirty-seven.

My right-hand man, W. J. L., is leaving us, on parole. We shall miss him very much, as he has proved a valuable worker. Please enroll in membership, W. L. He is to be my assistant in place of W. J. L. Also please send him the monthly and weekly papers.

We have completed “Lessons in Truth,” and are now using “Temple Talks,” before commencing “Christian Healing,” in the study class.

In regard to our great success and advancement so far, the inherent desire in even the worst men, is to get something better; hourly silent affirmations, and complete trust, on the part of the leader, have done it all; have obtained the present membership; have brought us our literature for study as needed; have furnished postage; and in fact, have done everything; proving, indeed, that he who needs and trusts, receives. All of this shows the wonderful power of Love. Love is our theme for the coming month, and having read L.’s copy of “Love, the Supreme Gift,” I would greatly appreciate a copy for class work.— C. L. D., S-70 No. AX-40.

South Africa— I rejoice to tell you that my sister, J. R., arrived home, safe and sound. The trip and the coming into touch with all you dear and very kind people, have undoubtedly done her much good. One day, I shall also visit the lovely people who write such beautiful things. I thank you very much for the sweet thought of sending me a little booklet. I have enjoyed the reading of it very much.— Mrs. C. IV., S-70 No. 0-1.

teach Truth and apply its principles. Right now your neighbors are writing and telegraphing to Kansas City for the healing ministry of Silent Unity, because there is no one near to whom they can go when in need of treatment. Our home study course gives the same instructions as are given to Silent Unity healers here at headquarters.

HOW TO ATTAIN YOUR GOOD

A Nen> Edition of a Popular Booklet“There is good for me, and I ought to have it,” is the

central theme of this booklet, to which the author recurs again and again, in her effort to impress upon people the fundamental notion of God as synonymous with Goodness.

It is a noticeable fact that those who speak with determination, saying, “I have a right to the good of life as well as other people,” are sure to reap accordingly, even though they do not realize the great importance of speaking out that which they would have come to pass.

Your good is waiting for you. Just learn to speak it into visibility.

This new edition of “How To Attain Your Good” is printed on extra quality, heavy paper. The cover is an art blue in two color design. Envelope to match. 35 cents is the price.

FINDING THE CHRIST IN OURSELVES(De luxe edition)

We are now getting out a beautiful new edition of “Finding the Christ in Ourselves.” This is the first de luxe edition of a Unity booklet. The demand for “Lessons in Truth” and “Christian Healing,” in keratol binding, has proved the popularity of these handsome books.

This booklet is gilt edged, bound in keratol, and comes in a box. Price, $1.00.

SPANISH EDITION OF “FINDING THE CHRIST”H. Emilie Cady’s booklet, “Finding the Christ in Our

selves,” may now be obtained in Spanish, as well as in German and English.

Our friends and neighbors in Mexico, Central America, and South America are to be congratulated on having this exalted little piece of writing translated into the Spanish tongue. The price is 35 cents.

Loves Roses (for children)B y L u c y C . K e l l e r h o u s e

If roses would bloom or nettles sprout each time our thinker thought, and each time we opened our mouths, what a mad scramble would there be for perfect thoughts and words lest we should become choked with noxious weeds and brambles. Yet this is what we are doing all the time— sowing thought seeds, and reaping lovely blossoms of happiness or troublesome tares of discord. Which will you have your girls and boys do ? Shall they early learn the lesson of love and service?Give the girls a lovely queen, clad in jeweled emerald mantle, seat her on a jasper throne, place in her hand a scepter fashioned as a silver lily with stamen of gold, surround her with retainers in white and gold, flash precious jewels around the audience chamber, and you have these imaginative girls riveted to you with hoops of steel—you can teach them anything through such a fanciful medium.“Love’s Roses,” bound in heavy sea green paper. Envelope to match. Price, 25 cents.

The Faith that Removes Mountains By S o p h i a V a n M a r t e r

Today we saw a perfect demonstration made by one of our little Unity workers. She is a girl who had been ill all her life long, until she came here a few years ago. Among her many other early afflictions, she had had pneumonia three times. This morning she awoke with all the symptoms of that dread malady. But what did she do? Did she succumb to fear? No, almost instantly she realized that she had been living too much in the outer. Therefore, she pulled herself back into the current of the one Life, lay there, while the healing waves laved and cleansed her. In a very short time, she got up, threw off the vast accumulated mucous, and was healed. Such is the power of Faith. The author of The Faith That Removes Mountains,” records in the booklet several demonstrations over the elements. She further stimulates faith by citing instances of men and women, big in the world’s affairs, who have attained their places through the magnifying vision.

Interesting, is the word we most often use in speaking of this booklet.Bound in heavy old blue paper, decorated in gold; 25 cents.

In Christ s Garden (a story)By M a r y B r e w e r t o n d e W i t t

The poetic and the spiritual form the warp and woof of the gossamer-woven little series of episodes in an ideal garden. In this rhapsody on God as manifested in nature, the author shows us “Little Sister,” walking and talking with her Master in the lovely garden, during the beautiful Indian summer days. One morning, seated beneath the moon vine in her little rustic chair, musing on the ways and possible thoughts of the butterfly flitting from flower to flower, the voice of the beloved Master breaks upon her revery: “The highest thought is not to think at all. The highest thought is to know, but not to know that thou knowest. The hidden thought is unconscious at-one-ment with the Father.” Nature lovers especially, take notice!Neatly bound booklet in envelope to match. Price, 50 cents.

The Holy SpiritBy C h a r l e s F i l l m o r e

When men have sought hither and yonder, in the highways and byways of life for satisfaction, they, at last, become willing to cease this feverish quest, and to turn within to the Comforter who never fails.“Here comes the mission of the Holy Spirit. When you ask in the silence of Spirit to be shown why you do not manifest the powers that Jesus of Nazareth did, the Holy Ghost will, in some way, reveal to you the lack. How that revealment will come about, no one can tell you. But if you are patient and trustful, you shall be guided and directed.”Neat booklet, envelope to match, 25 cents.

Lessons in Truth By H. E m i l i e C a d y

This is the regular text used in our beginning classes here at Unity. But there are students whom it pleases to repeat these “lessons” over and over again; and they say that with each review, new vistas of Truth open up to them.We have always heard that we get from things what we take to them. Christian HealingBy C h a r l e s F i l l m o r e

For many years, the author gave out his teachings from the platform, in classes, in tracts, and in small booklet form. Then came a day when the demand for a book from Mr. Fillmore became so great that “Christian Healing,” the flowering of a lifetime, was given to the world. Here we learn how to heal ourselves and others, how to attain greater prosperity, how to get a better understanding of regeneration, how to interpret the inner spiritual meaning of the many symbols of Christianity.De luxe edition, $3.00; dark green cloth, gold top and lettering, $2.00; paper, $1.00.

Miscellaneous Writings By H. E m i l i e C a d y

While studying “Lessons in Truth,” or “Christian Healing,” there come spare hours when a little kindred reading supplements the more specific text. This additional reading is supplied by “Miscellaneous Writings.” A day scarcely passes without letters coming in to Unity, telling of difficulties solved through just perhaps a half hour spent with one of these writings.Send for “Miscellaneous Writings.” It may be exactly what you’ve been looking for.Dark green cloth, with top and title stamped in gold, $1.50; paper, 75 cents.

Pure Reason and Honest LogicBy C h a r l e s F i l l m o r e

There is a surprising number of persons perfectly willing to “use their brains” in every field of secular thought, yet who accept their religion “on faith.” Thus has it ever been. Hence the countless sects which have sprung up, through the centuries, each one recruited largely from those who responded to an emotional appeal. But in this modern day of higher criticism, people are applying their God given reason to the solution of their religious problems. They are doing their own thinking. To those who have the courage to face the naked Truth, stripped bare of all dogmas, and who are willing to yield themselves to cold reason, which will eventually lead them into the warm sunlight of Truth, we recommend this booklet. Price, 25 cents.

The Philosophy of DenialBy C h a r l e s F i l l m o r e

Some teachers say: “Denial is not necessary: you only give power to error by according it recognition.”Our author answers this argument as follows: When your consciousness rests in Spirit, your dominion is sure and certain; then you do not come under the law of denial. You can simply “Be still, and know that I am God,” and the work is done. But many are encompassed with the belief of limitation, and they need the dissolving power of denial to set them free. This booklet has been found a wonderful aid in banishing delusions of error of every kind.Envelope to match; price, 25 cents.

Joy and the Way of Attainment By J e n n i e H. C r o f t

Another one of those neat little booklets in which the Unity Publishing Department takes so much pride. Have you failed to succeed? Have you been misrepresented? Do you ever get the “blues” ? Are you possibly one of those so pressed with the pursuit of dollars that you have neglected to put joy into your life? In one reading of the essay on “Joy,” the corners of your mouth will begin to curve upward, the second reading will fill you with the joy of living, and by the time you have read it thrice, you will feel yourself a “million- air of joy, cheerfulness and sunshine.” Price, 25 cents.

TRUSTING AND RESTING B y H. E m i l i e C a d y

What’s the use of hurrying and struggling and straining, when you can accomplish so much more and be so much happier by simply letting God do his part? Our part is small. God’s part is stupendous. Then isn’t it strange that we seek, with our feeble human will, to do the work of the Infinite?

Lay down your heavy load, and rest your tired nerves, and allow God to fight your battles for you. “Trusting and Resting” will teach you how. Price, 25 cents.

THE PRACTICE OF THE PRESENCEBy J e n n i e H. C r o f t

Brother Lawrence, a devotee of the Middle Ages, lived in the Divine Presence consciously every moment, even while doing scullery work within the convent walls. So fully and perfectly did this holy man identify himself with the illuminated One within, that all who came near him sensed the light of His presence. No doubt, the author drew inspiration from this good monk’s life in giving us this most helpful booklet. Price, 25 cents.

GOD’S HAND, AND LOOSE HIM AND LET HIM GO

By H. Emilie Cady Perhaps the heaviest burden we human beings carry is

the other fellow’s load. Whether that one be father, mother, husband, child, we must never forget that the Christ who ever lives at the center of each and every soul, “neither slumbers nor sleeps.” Now is the time to lift that dear one y letting him alone with his God, who is infinitely better

able to lead him than you can possibly hope to be. Price 23 cents.

FINDING THE CHRIST IN OURSELVES By H. Emilie Cady

r L J es“s lived right at the center, in constant union with his Christ Self. That was the reason he could radiate outward the healing love which made whole even those who but touched the hem of his garment. Would you, dear reader, contact this Power of the indwelling Presence? iJtudy the inspired pages of “Finding the Christ.” You’ll not be disappointed. Price, 25 cents.

. ALL SUFFICIENCY IN ALL THINGS By H. Emilie Cady

WEE WISDOM MAGAZINERealizing our obliga

tion to the younger generation, we are endeavoring to present to the children now growing into young manhood and womanhood, the highest teaching that we know.

No effort is being spared in making their magazine, W ee Wisdom, as interesting and attractive as possible, through the medium of picture, poem, and story. All material for the publication is prepared to

touch the right spot in live boys and girls. Since Wee Wisdom is increasing in circulation, it has become possible to enlarge it.

The children are strongly under the spell of the decadent age, now, happily, passing. In order to offset the frivolous, often unwholesome, and generally unmoral appeal of the movies and other influences of modern life, we must draw the children into the countercurrent of lofty ideals. Wee Wisdom will do this.

It should be on every Unity reader’s conscience to see that some child has an opportunity to read this little magazine, which is preparing the children for h, ppy, helpful, joyous manhood and womanhood. W e a^ain urge you to place this worthy and unique magazine in the hands of His little ones.

Subscription price is $1.00 a year.
