A Model of the Human Atom

A Model of the Human Atom© KD McMahon 2006
The atom has a nucleus surrounded by electron orbitals. The atom comes in contact and may react with other atoms and its environment through the electrons.
Hexagons surround the human nucleus. We interface with other people and the universe through them.

The Beautiful

The first hexagon is… which has to do with the nature of being. Plato envisioned the divine as the Supreme Beauty. All other reality is a reflection of this Beauty.
Scientists are once again discovering the role of beauty in understanding nature. Nobel Laureate in Physics, Richard Feynman, observed, “You can recognize truth by its beauty and simplicity.”

The second hexagon is… Which is the study of how we know what we know. It is concerned with “criteria of truth.”
Philosophers of Science recognize that scientific epistemology is more complex than what is simply described as the Scientific Method and that it shares many features with other ways of knowing.

Many of the great moral issues of our time, such as cloning and stem-cell research, involve science. Science educators and ethicists are beginning to recognize the need to incorporate ethics into the science curriculum.
The third hexagon is… Which is concerned with how we are to act towards ourselves, the other, and the world.

Nucleus

The nucleus defines what makes us uniquely human persons. Largely this is defined by a person’s religious and philosophical understandings. An example of a nucleus will be provided at the end of this presentation.
In the center there is the…
The Hexagons represent a Trivium which means in Latin, “where three roads meet.” The illustration above demonstrates that the hexagons meet and emerge from the nucleus of the human person.
Our understanding of the human nucleus will directly affect our conception of what is beautiful about humanity, whether the “truth” is accessible to us, and what it means to be a good and moral person.

In our analogy to the atom, hexagons are like orbitals. The vertex of each hexagon represents a suborbital. Each suborbital in an atom can hold two electrons spinning in opposite directions.
In our human atom, each vertex contains an antinomy. Such paradoxes are common in religion (god-man, ying-yang), philosophy (binaries, coincidentia oppositorum), and science (wave-particle duality).
The first and most fundamental of all antinomies is “Something/Nothing.” Why is there something rather than nothing? How does something emerge from nothing?

There are seventeen other antinomies which will be shown in this presentation.
A separate hypertext page is provided at the end of this presentation. A pop up window will appear with a brief summary when the antinomy is clicked.
