Volunteer PULSE

January 2018

Not often, I will admit. Volunteers get the opportunity once a year, in celebration of Volunteer Week. This allows them to meet Mr. Altaf Stationwala, the President and CEO of Mackenzie Health, get an update on what is going on at the hospital and enjoy a continental breakfast sponsored by Richview Manor Retirement Residence.

Breakfast was followed by an excellent luncheon at the Maple Downs Golf and Country Club on April 22, 2018. The luncheon gave us an opportunity to recognize some of our many volunteers who received Years of Service, Outstanding, Departmental and the Ruth Coxford Lifetime Achievement Awards. To each and everyone, we extend our sincere congratulations. An afternoon tea sponsored by Chartwell Retirement Residences, celebrating the retirement of seven of our volunteers with a combined total of 152 years of volunteer service was also held on April 24, 2018.

Due to the treacherous ice storm during the weekend of April 14, 2018, the attendance at the High Tea held at The Summit Golf & Country Club in Richmond Hill dropped to almost half. Nevertheless, the spirit of those who did manage to attend made for an enjoyable event. Our appreciation goes out to Anna Caporiccio and to all those who helped organise the event. I understand the food was delicious and the place was the perfect setting for a period tea party.

The Thornhill Branch Charity Theatre Performance, featuring “Calendar Girls”, was held at The Curtain Club in Richmond Hill. It was a captivating comedy, a celebration of life, friendship and love. This was a special charity night performance with all funds going to the Mackenzie Health Volunteer Association.

Our Past Presidents are busy preparing for our Annual AGM to be held on June 13, 2018 at 7:00 pm in the Berwick Family Auditorium. Our guest speaker will be Ms. Simone Papernick, Patient Care Manager, Mental Health Program at Mackenzie Health. We will also be handing out Student Achievement and Peggy Temple Bursaries to a few very deserving students. I hope to see you all at the AGM.

A Message From The Volunteer Association President

What happened to the “April Showers bring May flowers”? Old Man Winter certainly did not want to let go. Instead we got a very destructive windstorm.

The month of April was certainly very busy with numerous activities taking place during Volunteer Week. Our thanks to Karen Andersen, Anna Daigle and Stephanie Sehinson who never fail to amaze us in putting together an awesome week of activities year after year.

How often does one have an opportunity to have breakfast with the CEO?

Sincerely,

Sally DavidPresident, Mackenzie Health Volunteer Association

Please also keep an eye out for forthcoming events in the next few months like the Vaughan Pizza Fest in July and the Garage Sale in late summer. The Coins for Health CFH campaign is ready to launch. The theme will be “Support Mental Health Services in Our Community” and all proceeds will go towards our $500,000 pledge in support of Mental Health services at Mackenzie Health.

The Volunteer Association Board members will be taking a short hiatus over the summer to rejuvenate to better serve our Hospital and community in the months ahead.

Thank you once again, Please have a safe and enjoyable summer.

Remembering Our VolunteersHank Abma

Hank was a volunteer at Mackenzie Health for the last 19 years. He always served as a support and information desk volunteer. In 2003, Hank received the Outstanding Volunteer Award and in 2010 he received the Departmental Volunteer Award. Hank was a great detective and problem solver. Not only will be he be greatly missed for his gentle personality but for his tremendous commitment to our patients.

Joan Malanchuk

Joan was 35 years as a volunteer at Mackenzie Health and the incredible friendships she made and has kept close to her heart all these years. She was a member of the Gormley Branch and then Co-Chair of the Richmond Heights Branch. Inside the hospital, Joan was a valued member of the Tuesday morning Support Volunteer Team where she helped provide that exceptional experience to our patients and families. In 1992, Joan was a worthy recipient of the Outstanding Volunteer Award.

From the Desk of Altaf Stationwala

Celebrating our Volunteers We had a number of wonderful opportunities in April to celebrate our volunteers. We can’t thank you enough for the time and ongoing support you provide to help us ensure patients and families receive the best care experience at Mackenzie Health. In your honour, we marked your year-long efforts with a week of celebrations during National Volunteer Week, April 16 – 20. We are forever grateful for your continued commitment!

Inclusion and DiversityWe are a growing and diverse community that encompasses a range of cultural backgrounds, different faiths and multiple generations. As we evolve to a two-hospital model of care, we want to continue to foster a culture that promotes diversity, inclusion and equity for all members of the Mackenzie Health community – our staff, physicians, volunteers, patients and families. For this reason, we launched our new Inclusion & Diversity Program that emphasizes our commitment to ensuring a respectful and accessible environment for everyone and where every person feels safe, welcomed and valued.

RL Solutions Safety Reporting SystemEarlier this year, Mackenzie Health launched a new online safety reporting system. The RL Solutions program is user-friendly, quick and available to all Mackenzie Health staff, physicians and volunteers. The safety and security of our staff, patients and their families will always be our top priority. At Mackenzie Health, we have an open door policy and encourage staff and volunteers to report incidents and share information to prevent an incident from occurring to ensure everyone within our hospital continues to stay safe.

Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital UpdateExcellent progress continues on the construction site for the new hospital. Level four is currently being poured, which will be home to the Woman and Child program, dedicated to the care of new mothers and their babies as well as children. View the construction progress over time in our new timelapse video or see live cam pictures from the Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital construction site.

Hard Hat ToursOn May 30 and 31, our colleagues at the Mackenzie Health Foundation, in partnership with our Redevelopment team, hosted tours for donors who contributed to the Exceptional Care Belongs Here campaign. Our community donors play an essential role in helping to make our new hospital possible. Currently, the Foundation has surpassed the $84 million mark of their $250 million goal.

Celebrating PatientsOn Monday, June 18, we will be hosting the third annual Celebrating Patients, an intimate event to celebrate the patient care journey of our patients, their families and community. The event is an opportunity to recognize and thank patients who work hard to overcome their personal health challenges from illness and injury. Here, at Mackenzie Health, we recognize that every patient has their own unique story and the best person to tell that story is the patient. Through storytelling and sharing, others can often find a source encouragement and motivation.

A Message from Mackenzie Health Foundation On any day at Mackenzie Health, it’s a given that many, many volunteers will be working tirelessly in support of our community. Donning your purple uniform, donating your time and skills at any of your numerous fundraising events or serving as Board or committee members, your support, in all its forms, is critical to realizing our vision to create a world-class health experience.

In the last 56 years, much has changed in our community and in the landscape of York Region; the Volunteer Association and its membership have adapted in-step. The one thingthat has never wavered is the whole-hearted commitment of each and every volunteer to providing an exceptional patient experience and ensuring world-class health care is available to friends, family, colleagues and the community at-large, when they need it most.

For more than five decades, the Volunteer Association has raised funds for vital equipment used throughout the Hospital. The recent focus on supporting vital mental health services at Mackenzie Health with a bold new $500,000 pledge, demonstrates an astute understanding of and strong commitment to the needs of this community – one that will have a profound impact on some of its most vulnerable members suffering from mental health challenges.

Mackenzie Health’s Mental Health program will be centralized at the new 1.2 million square foot, patient-centred Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital and will feature expanded services for adults, youth and children, complemented by emergency and out-patient services at Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hospital. The Volunteer Association’s support will enable Mackenzie Health to better serve the growing mental health demands in York Region.

Your pledge has helped the Exceptional Care Belongs Here campaign to achieve $84 million of its $250-million goal to-date. Thank you.

More than 700 additional volunteers will be needed by the time the new Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital opens in 2020. You continue to inspire the work we do every day and we look forward to working with an even stronger group of talented and dedicated Mackenzie Health ambassadors.

Sincerely,Ingrid PerryPresident and CEO, Mackenzie Health Foundation

Sincerely,Altaf StationwalaPresident and CEO, Mackenzie Health

Thank You!As always, we sincerely thank you for your support and drive to make every patient experience the best it can be. Your commitment is admirable and very much appreciated by everyone who works at or receives care from Mackenzie Health.

Leading Women AwardThree members of the Mackenzie Health Volunteer Association Board have been honoured with an Ontario “Leading Women, Building Communities Award”. They were among over 30 women in Richmond Hill and Vaughan recognized with the 2018 award.

They are, alphabetically, Pierina Bosco, Anna Caporiccio, and Sally David.

The awards were presented by Ministers Reza Moridi, MPP (Richmond Hill) and Steven Del Duca MPP (Vaughan). Minister Moridi thanked the women for continuing to be an inspiration to us all. Since its inception in 2006 these awards have recognized nearly 1000 women and girls for their contributions. Minister Del Duca noted that the leadership of women and girls is essential to creating a fair society and strong economy in Ontario.

Pierina BoscoPierina joined the Mackenzie Health Volunteer Association (MHVA) in October 2005. She has worked as a support volunteer and in the Gift Shop. In 2008, Pierina became involved with Hands-up-for-Health – a program that goes into the schools and for which she received a Departmental Award in 2015. She became Membership Co-chair in 2012 and a leader in the Brand Ambassador program.

More recently, Pierina has accepted the position of Gift Shop Committee Chair. One volunteer said of her: “She has proven to be a calm, efficient, thoughtful leader – she speaks quietly but others listen”. Her other awards include the City of Vaughan award in 2011 and the MHVA Outstanding Service Award in 2016.

Anna CaporiccioAnna joined the MHVA in November 2002 as a member of the White Rose Branch and officially moved to the newly created Roses of York Branch in 2010. She, with other members of the Roses of York, is a very active fundraiser. For the hospital she led the organizing of the annual fundraising dinner & dance for several years from 2005 to 2009. Anna was 2nd VP and 1st VP for the Association from 2008 – 2010 before resigning from the Board.

Anna continued her fundraising efforts however and not just for the MHVA but also for many other not-for-profit organizations within the community through such events as garage sales, High Teas, craft sales to name a few. In 2009, Anna became a life member of the MHVA and won an Outstanding Service Award in 2010.

Sally DavidSally has been a volunteer at Mackenzie Health since 1997. Sally has always volunteered in the ER department. Through the years, our Emergency Department has undergone several structural and procedural changes. The growth in this department has been unprecedented. The growth in the volunteer program has reflected these changes. We can always count on Sally to be available to train and supervise new volunteers. Many of our volunteers in the Emergency Department are young students with desires of a medical field career. Sally has such a supportive and mentoring personality, she is the perfect senior volunteer to take them under her wing.

When retirement came in 2016, Sally’s name was raised as a candidate for the Mackenzie Health Volunteer Association Board of Directors. She joined the board as 1st Vice President, where she sat on the both the Foundation Board, the Quality Committee and the Design and Development Committee (Volunteer Services and Spiritual Care) for the new Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital. Sally is a contributing voice of the volunteers as we prepare a space specific to future volunteers and spiritual care givers at Mackenzie Health. The weight of this venture is not taken lightly by

any of us working on this project, least of all Sally who knows her decisions today will affect those that follow in her footsteps.

In 2017, Sally started her 2 year term as President of the Mackenzie Health Volunteer Association. Sally has demonstrated leadership in her community, whether guiding the young minds of students or preparing a hospital that will serve generations to come.

DonationsCoins for HealthOn May 1, I handed in $110 for Fred Visco which brought my total up to $21,846.00 and I would like to thank Gay H. and the many that drop off their coins and the odd bill towards the cause. So looking forward to the new coin boxes for both the Gift Shop and Information Desk.

Pop Tabs for WheelchairsMany thanks go to Marilyn K. and her swim team, Sheila M., Jackie J., Margaret L. for her huge bag, ICU, Teresa P., and Lorraine V. These wee things are really making a large difference to someone that needs a wheelchair and is unable to afford one. You are all doing an amazing job to help these folks.

Many ThanksVirginia Wainman

Kudos to Anna Petruccelli We received a kudos for Anna from a patient who is a frequent visitor to our ER due to a recurring condition. She is 79 yrs old and formerly worked at Mt. Sinai. She called to say that Anna is the most compassionate volunteer she has ever met. She has met Anna a few times now. On this last visit, Anna saw this patient in the Ambulatory Zone and she made her feel comfortable with warm blankets as she received an IV. After her treatment, Anna took her to the Pharmacy and helped her fill her prescription. Anna then wheeled her back to the D Wing entrance and helped her arrange transportation home. She then stayed with her until her ride arrived. In her opinion, Anna went above and beyond the call of duty to ensure that this patient was well taken care of. On behalf of Mackenzie Health, we want to thank you Anna for your kind and giving soul. You made a real difference to this patient and she took the time to call and let us know.

Engaging Volunteers in Improvement Initiatives

SignageCapitalizing on the great work done in 2016 on the In Patient Unit Renaming and Signage Project, an engaged and proactive group of volunteers, under the executive sponsorship of Stav D’Andrea and strategy guidance of Anna Kulikov, identified the most efficient and effective signage to assist patients and visitors moving throughout the facility. Using the principles of simplistic, bright and large, new signage for key outpatient areas, elevators and wings was developed. The signage integrates these principles with the common language used at Central Registration. In addition to improving the signage, they also suggested changes to simplify the wayfinding sheets handed out when a patient registers. The response has been overwhelmingly positive.

In addition to signage, volunteers have been early adopters of the new Mackenzie Health Wayfinding App, learning how to operate and support our patients and visitors. If you would like to get the wayfinding app on your phone visit Wayfinding App.
