School life at A. Ward Spaulding
School continues to be filled with rich
experiences for your children. One of
these recent experiences was our
STAR assembly held on January 24th
in which students were celebrated for
their acts of kindness. As you know,
this year students have been earning
Spaulding Star tickets for displaying
acts of respect, responsibility, and
kindness in the classroom, at recess,
in the cafeteria, and on the school bus.
The Spaulding Stars Assembly
Committee identified three assemblies
for this year, each dedicated to one
trait to celebrate. The second and
third assemblies, highlighting acts of
respect and responsibility, will occur
in late winter and at the end of the
school year.
This first
assembly
focused on
the
kindness
trait. The
assembly
began with
a review of
the Spaulding Stars program.
Students in second grade, led by
music teacher Wyn Jespersen, sang
the song, Be Kind to Teachers. Each
classroom teacher was asked to
nominate one boy and one girl from
their class who demonstrated
kindness on a regular basis. These
nominees were shared with the
specialist teachers. Then one boy and
one girl from each grade level were
identified to receive the Kindness
certificate. Eight students were
honored and given their special
certificate at this assembly. Staff
invited
the
students’
parents to
share in
this
special
event.
After the
award presentation, students watched
a video segment that emphasized
kindness and ways to display that
trait at school. The eight student
recipients then led the school in a
kindness cheer.
The assembly closed with our
Spaulding Cares song. To date,
nearly two hundred Star tickets have
been awarded to students for respect,
responsible, and kind behavior, and
the Spaulding community is proud of
the efforts of their students through
this positive and proactive program.
Thank you for your continued
investment in this program that
identifies and celebrates students’
positive choices and decision-making.
We are proud of our Spaulding Stars!
There are many little ways to
enlarge your child’s world. Love
of books is the best of all.

Spaulding Stars Shine on the Bus!
This year we built upon our character education
program to identify and celebrate the character
traits of respect, responsibility, and kindness in
the school environment. We continue to work
with students on the importance of being a
Spaulding Star in all settings. In addition to
students being recognized for respectful,
responsible, and kind behavior in classrooms,
cafeteria, and on the playground, students now
have the opportunity to earn a STAR on the bus.
Spaulding staff members reviewed with students
how to shine on the bus by identifying student responsibilities and respectful
and kind actions. The bus drivers from M&J Bus Company have partnered
enthusiastically on this initiative. Bus STARS are given out once a month
per bus or van. We continue to be proud of our shining Spaulding Stars!
Visit from Suffield Middle School Makes a Difference
In January, The Giraffe Club
led by Aimee Gauvin from
Suffield Middle School spent
time with first grade students at
Spaulding School. The members
of the club read to the children
and assisted during Math
Workshop activities. This club
has committed their time to
raise awareness and helped
within the community. During
the Thanksgiving holiday, they collected food for a local Suffield family, and
later gathered hats and mittens to give to Emergency Aid to be included in
holiday baskets. Also they created 100 holiday cards for the Senior Citizens
of Suffield that were
distributed at their holiday
party. These dedicated and
caring students from the
middle school also have raised
awareness for women's health
within their school and raised
over $700.00 for an
organization called Movember
as they created awareness for
men's health. This club will
continue with their service to
the community as many more
events are planned.

March 2014
Our most recent spirit day was widely
popular at A. Ward Spaulding School. Many
students and staff dressed for Clash Day on
January 24th in outfits that did not match.
We saw and admired a mix-match of polka
dots, stripes, and plaid. Our next spirit day is
March 13th, Sports Day, in which students
and staff will wear their favorite sports team
jersey.
RECENT SPIRIT DAYS A SPIRITED SUCCESS!
UNDER THE SEA CONCERT
A. Ward Spaulding School presented a delightful concert on
Friday, February 7th. The students treated the audience to an
Under the Sea adventure with a combination of original and
traditional songs about the ocean and sea creatures. Principal
Scott P. Dunn began the program with introductory remarks
and Mrs. Patty Piellucci, the school’s art specialist, provided a
description of the skills used by the second grade students to
create the tin sea creatures that decorated the auditorium.
The concert began with the Kindergarten students, who sang If I Could
Live in the Ocean and Whales Are Huge! both written by Mrs. Wyn
Jespersen, the music specialist at Spaulding. The Kindergartners also
performed a choreographed scarf dance to Aquarium from the Carnival of
the Animals, by Camille Saint Saens. Mrs. Jespersen directed the first
grade students as they performed The Sting Ray Rap, Going Over The Sea,
and the traditional folk song Down By The Bay which she accompanied on
the guitar.
The audience enjoyed a beautiful sea song entitled Yonder Sails a
Ship which highlighted the new 2nd grade chorus program at the
school. A small group of students added to the lovely melody by
singing harmony. The second grade students also sang fun
selections including Oceans of Fun and The Penguin Polka. The
concert concluded with students singing the Spaulding School song.
Mrs. Jespersen, commented It’s always wonderful when we can
prepare our concert in ways that support student learning. This year
our students used music to learn about sea creatures and the ocean
while making Common Core State Standard connections. The music
was fun to learn and our enthusiastic students were thrilled to share
their musical accomplishments.
