Inside this issue Congress Recap OJ Contest Remind- ers Meet the 2019 Junior Doll … and more Don’t Forget National Project Proposal are due to your Division Vice Chair by September 30th! The deadline to submit an applica- tion for the 2019 Outstanding Junior Contest is October 31st! The submission deadline for the Fall 2018 issue of The Explorer is November 1st. A MESSAGE FROM OUR NATIONAL CHAIR Greetings! The 127 th Continental Congress was a fun celebration of Junior Membership as we com- memorated 80 years of impact through the Helen Pouch Memorial Fund. Juniors and Jun- ior supporters participated in team-building exercises and exchanged ideas and net- worked during the Junior Membership Forum where we announced the state Junior Membership awards. State Chairs met during an open house to dialogue and brainstorm how to Explore Junior Membership in their states. More than 900 Daughters joined us for a fun and exciting Junior Membership Luncheon. Thank you to Nancy Hiteshue Smith, National Vice Chair- Junior Events for her assistance in planning and executing these suc- cessful events! Appreciation is also extended to the reluctant Junior Membership singers who helped throughout the week with recording our Junior Membership’s Greatest Hits album and to Texas Junior Ashley Naumann for her assistance in penning many of the song parodies. Finally, thank you to the many, many volunteers who assisted with deco- rating and our special power push for the priceless heirlooms belonging to Mrs. Yochim and Mrs. Shelby. We raised more than $13,000 in 5 minutes for the Helen Pouch Memori- al Fund! I hope those of you who attended Congress shopped early and often at both of our Junior Shoppe locations and placed bids in our Silent Auction at the Grand Hyatt location. The most popular items were the pins, scarves, and other items donated by the State Regents. Please thank your State Regent for her donation! Thank you to Ashley Wasser, National Vice Chair- Shoppe and Kellee Clark, National Vice Chair- Sales, and the many fabulous pages for managing and working both locations during the hectic week. We are well on our way to another successful year of fundraising for the Helen Pouch Memorial Fund which supports the DAR Schools, classrooms around the country, and approved projects of the Junior Membership Committee. Congratulations to our 2018 National Outstanding Junior Erin Stoesz (WY) and National Outstanding Junior Runner Up Sarah Steinke (IA)! JeanEllen Melton, National Vice Chair- OJ Contest ensured that the contest was administered with integrity at every level and did a fantastic job presenting all 32 State Outstanding Juniors during Education Awards Night and the Junior Membership Luncheon. Please remember that the deadline for proposing the 2019 National Project of the Junior Membership Committee is quickly approaching. State Chairs are encouraged to nominate a non-proϐit organization which carries out the mission of one (or more) of the DAR’s objectives of Patriotism, Education, and Historic Preservation. Past projects have includ- ed K.I.S.S. (Kids In Support of Soldiers), Purple Hearts Reunited, Operation Freedom, and Schools Count Corp. If you have a suggestion for a recommended project please contact your state chair of Junior Membership! Remember, this project will now be awarded a donation at the 2019 Continental Congress! Finally, please welcome Kellee Clark as the new National Vice Chair- Sales. Kellee joined the committee prior to Congress and has been hard at work to ensure we keep an ade- quate inventory to support your orders and is working on proposals for new items we hope to bring you for State Conference season!
