A magia do Príncipe
No entanto, a ingenuidade do pequeno príncipe é o

A TV Show To Rule Us All
A theoretical physicist and an experimental one, an astrophysicist and a mechanical
engineer, add to the equation a waitress with questionable intelligence. What is the result? One of
the best TV shows of the present time!
The Big Bang Theory is an American TV show produced by Warner Bros. Television
together with Chuck Lorre Productions, it premiered on CBS channel on 22 September 2007 and,
until today, eight year after its release, it is still the public’s favorite. When the third season aired
on 21 September 2009, it received the award of CBS’ biggest audience. Nowadays, the show is in
its eighth season and the TV station has already announced the show’s renewal until the tenth
season. But, what is the secret of such success after all?
Located in Pasadena, California, the series shows us the daily routine of four friends, each
one with their own quirks. Sheldon Cooper, a theoretical physicist who believes to possess a
superior intellect, he loathes social conventions of any kind and brags about obtaining a Master’s
Degree at the age of thirteen. Leonard Hofstadter is an experimental physicist who shares the
apartment with Sheldon. Just like his friends, he struggles to relate with the opposite sex but, due
to his kind personality and his good heart, he draws Penny’s attention, his new neighbor. Howard
Wolowitz it’s a mechanical engineer and, as he is the only one who doesn’t have a PhD, jokes are
made at his expense all the time. He says he has a deep expertise in the feminine universe, but
he’s rarely successful, his striking clothes together with his superheroes belt buckles aren’t really
helpful. Last but not least, Rajesh Koothrappali, Howard’s best friend, is an Indian astrophysicist
who believes he’s the most appealing of the group due to his “exotic and charming accent”.
However, he suffers of a pathology called selective mutism which makes him unable to
communicate with women and puts him in several embarrassing and comical situations.
These characters’ lives, especially Leonard and Sheldon’s, changes abruptly when Penny,
a beautiful but unintelligent young woman, moves to the apartment across the hall. Penny dreams
of being a famous actress, but her plans don’t work and she ends up as a waitress. When Leonard
meets his new neighbor, he realizes how little he knows about life and sees in Penny a possibility
to learn things a classroom and being alone in a laboratory cannot teach him. At the end of the
day, a waitress has plenty to teach a scientist.
Besides being brilliant scientist, another factor that draws our attention to these well-built
characters is the fact that they're nerds. Self-accepted and with great proud!
”Sheldon: One ring to rule them all!
Rajesh: One ring to find them!
Wolowitz: One ring to bring them all.
Leonard: And in the darkness bind them.
Rajesh: Holy crap, are we nerdy!”
Massive comic book collections, spending a whole weekend watching Star Wars and Lord
of the Rings, superhero's t-shirts, RPG, 3D chess boards, and several other inventions belong to
the group's everyday life.
With a script full of scientific references, the series makes smart jokes without losing its
joviality, so that everybody can understand and, most of all, have fun. Mixing science with humor
at the right measure, the directors were able to reach the unreachable: Show that even quantum
physics can be fun!
Most scientific references are made by Sheldon. For him, everything around us has a
solution based on science. One of the most brilliant dialogues of the series occurs when Sheldon
tries to tell Penny if she should or should not date Leonard through a comparison with the theory
of Schrodinger's Cat. In a simple way, however brilliant, Sheldon can quickly explain a complex
quantum physics theory that many scholars spend years trying to understand. Below we can see
the explanation given by him:
Sheldon: "Anyway, in 1935 Erwin Schrodinger, in an
attempt to explain the Copenhagen interpretation of
Quantum Physics, he proposed an experiment where a cat is
placed in a box with a sealed vial of poison that will break
open at a random time. Now, since no one knows when or if
the poison has been released, until the box is opened, the
cat can be thought as both alive and dead."
“Just like Schrodinger's cat, your potential relationship
with Leonard right now can be thought of as both good and
bad. It is only by opening the box that you will find out which
it is."
Another reason for the series' great success is the way it breaks away from stereotypes
where the good guy is always the most beautiful, the most popular, the quarterback, the rock star
or even a super hero. Since the first episode, fans find themselves in love with Raj's Indian accent,
with Leonard's shyness, with Bernadette's shrill but cute voice, with Sheldon's quirkiness, and
even Howard's pick-up lines become adorable and funny.
Therefore, The Big Bang Theory managed to put an end to prejudice against nerds, geeks
or any other name that can be given to people of high IQ. The TV show is a symbol of the nerd
world popularization, and since the first episode has shown us that modern heroes have higher IQ
than muscles and, as Howard Wolowitz would say, "Smart is the new sexy."

Uma série para a todos governar
Um físico teórico e um experimental, um astrofísico e um engenheiro mecânico, adicione à
equação uma garçonete com uma inteligência questionável. Qual o resultado?
passam anos tentando compreender.
ruim.
A série é

Are there limits for freedom of expression?
What is the limit for freedom of expression? Are there limits for humor? These are the
questions the whole world has been wondering since the terrorist attack against the satiric Charlie
Hebdo’s newsroom, on January 7th, 2015, in France. Two men carrying automatic guns have
entered the weekly newspaper headquarters and fired, murdering twelve people, including the
editor and three cartoonists internationally known.
Charlie Hebdo is known for its satiric and ironic cartoons about politics, religion,
celebrities, among other themes. Since 2006, when it released a series of cartoons showing
Mohammed, the paper has received threats due its acid humor. In 2011, Charlie was attacked with
molotov cocktails, which burned part of its headquarters in Paris.
More than a hundred thousand people went to the streets in different parts of France to
protest against the massacre at Charlie’s newsroom, with sayings of “Je suis Charlie” (“I am
Charlie”), supporting the victims. After this, a global support, mainly through social networks,
quickly spread with sayings of “Je suis Charlie”, increasing the number of people who shared the
French mourning.
It did not take so much to get to the polemic question about freedom of expression. Shortly
after the attack, Charlie Hebdo stated that it would not quit publishing its cartoons, neither let itself
be intimidated by terror threats. It would not flinch facing the barbarism and cut freedom of
expression present in all democratic societies. So, is it what freedom of expression means? Is it
the freedom of saying whatever you want, about whoever you want, no matter what? This is the
reflection I propose to the readers in this text.
It is right to state that nobody can be prohibited to express yourself in a democratic
society. However, it is reasonable to think that from the moment something said may insult others
and satirize complex and delicate themes, diverse reactions from insulted people may be
expected. Respect and common sense should always be regarded, mainly if the subject is not
defended or believed by the person who says. On the French case, the newspaper has already
been criticized for its carelessness and its undue creativity over the years. Cartoonists and
journalists are divided: some believe in the right of total and disorderly expression, while others
deffend the free expression, but also in a measured way.
The question about the limits of freedom of expression will be discussed a lot in the world
and we do not even know if someday we will meet a global consensus. Nevertheless, reflecting
about it is important, so the debate can bring new ideas and enable us to visualize the point
through other perspectives. By the dialogue we can get closer to better results and, who knows,
find more efficient ways to preserve lives and extinguish the terrorism.

No caso francês, o jornal
terrorismo.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU…
There are some people who like, there are others who don’t, and there are even those who
prefer to spend the day like some other regular one. But there’s one common thing for all of us:
birthday is a celebration which is part of our culture for centuries.
The habit of celebrating the day came about in 3000 B.C in ancient Egypt. Back in that time,
it was a “privilege” for only higher beings like gods and pharaohs. As the time went by, this habit
spread and reached the “paltry mortals”.
Due to its pagan origins, birthdays were abolished in the beginning of Christianity. Around
4th century, the church began to celebrate Christ’s birth, and, because of that, people started to
do the same, little by little. Over the years, other symbols became part of birthday celebrations.
ORIGIN OF BIRTHDAY CUSTOMS
CAKE AND CANDLES: For unknown reasons, Germans recued a Greek habit of putting
candles on a pie, which represented the full moon, in honor of the goddess Artemis. Later,
it became a part of children’s parties.
GIFTS: Exchanging gifts has started in the ancient Egypt and it had as mainly purpose to
ward off evil spirits.
BALOONS: Children have always been the main interested in birthday parties. It’s believed
balloon was one of the first children’s toys. However, they were not made of plastic. They
were made of intestines and guts of dead animals.
“HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU”: the melody of “good morning for all” was created in 1875 by
the Americans Mildred and Patricia Hill. Some years and changes later, it turned into the
famous “happy birthday to you”. The Brazilian version first appeared in 1924, composed by
Bertha Celeste.
CHOCOLATE TRUFFLE: This Brazilian candy was created as a form to obtain votes for the
brigadier Eduardo Gomes who disputed the elections in 1945. He lost, but who cares? This
candy is simply delicious and became part of birthday celebrations.
BIRTHDAY CARD: This habit started in England, in the early twentieth century. Cards were
a way to apologize for not being able to go to someone’s birthday, or for not visiting the
person in that day. Later, it became another loving way to show how much you like the
birthday person.
AROUND THE WORLD
Around the world there are a lot of different ways to celebrate this special day. Check out
some of the typical birthday traditions:
In Brazil it is common for girls to celebrate their birthday by dancing a waltz with her father
or grandfather. Sometimes, they are followed by another 14 couples. In some parts of the
country, it is common for men to celebrate their 18th birthday, which represents the
beginning of their adulthood.
In Argentina, they celebrate in a very similar way: girls, to complete 15 years old, dance
waltz with their fathers and other boys.
In Ecuador, there are only some differences: besides the waltz, the girl dresses a pink dress
and gets from her father her first pair of high heels.
In some parts of Canada, it is ordinary to grease the birthday person’s nose as a way to
have good luck. It’s believed this tradition came from Scotland.
In Denmark, people are used to hoisting a flag outside the birthday person’s house to
indicate it is the birthday of someone in there.
In England, a cake is stuffed with rings and coins. If you find a coin in your piece, it is a sign
of fortune in your future. If you find a ring, it means love.
In Germany, one member of the family lights candle on the birthday cake during the dawn.
It is put the same number of candles as the age of the person plus one, to get lucky. The
candles remain on during all day. They are just blown after dinner, when the party finally
starts.
In Guyana, a member of the family bakes a fruit to the birthday person and he/she is
supposed to wear something garish.
In Russia, Serbia, Bulgaria and Greece, girls normally have two birthday parties in a year:
as most of them have the name of saints, it is common for them to celebrate in the birth day
and in the day of the patron saint.
In Thailand is uncommon to throw big birthday parties as a way to celebrate. Unlike that,
birthday people spend the day thanking for all the graces received and doing good things
like giving poor people food, for instance.
In Korea, the first birthday party says a lot about a child’s future. He/she is put in front of a
lot of objects brought by the guests. If, for instance, he/she picks up a book, it means
he/she is going to be totally dedicated to study.

a lua cheia .
“PARABÉNS PRA VOCÊ”: a melodia de “good morning for all” foi criada em 1875
pelas americanas Mildred e Patricia Hill e, alguns anos e mudanças depois, acabou
Ele perdeu as
XX.
estima o aniversariante.
NO RESTO DO MUNDO
Confira
As velas ficam acessas durante

Do you know K-POP?
K-pop can be defined as a fusion of the rhythms: R&B, rock, pop and hip hop and also for
launching trends and new styles. The artists love Korean style, they influence the way young
people dress around the world. The songs have repetitive chorus, many times with words or
sentences in English and synchronized choreographies.
In South Korea there are several companies that create K-POP groups: SM (SMALL
TOWN), YG Entertainment, JYP Entertainment, Unit Cube etc. The process of creation,
dissemination and training of these groups is different from the rest of the world. People call this
process a machine to produce groups, because these companies have a ready model for the
training of artists.
First, these young need to have an audition when they are chosen; they become trainees of
these companies, having a lot of training so that they can improve their skills that include dancing,
etiquette, singing, acting and foreign languages. They also receive aesthetic treatments and
plastic surgery.
These artists dedicate many hours of training per week, because it’s hard work and no
initial remuneration, i.e. they only receive when they debut (this is the name they give to the artists
who made their debut on stage, where they will be presented to the world and so will initiate their
careers).
The trainees live together in apartments which are paid by the companies not to be
distracted by things from outside world, so to sign the agreement they are prohibited to having
romantic relationships with other famous, or with anonymous people. The companies take this
measure, because they think that dating can draw focus from work. Usually the artists train 6-11
years, before debuting in the music business.
The agencies invest millions on heir artists to have success; their working methods are very
controversial, they are seen with indignation, especially by fans, and in some cases even by the
artists. All the contracts made by these companies have absurd agreements, with about seven to
eleven years, therefore the idol must follow it faithfully, and the break of it leads to enormous
consequences and little rewards at the end of everything.
The routine of work is tough, with a few days of vacation. The idols are obliged to
participate in all the events that the agency has, even if they have injuries or psychological
exhaustion. Their salaries are low compared to their training routines.
The idols go constantly to music programs, such as the Music Bank, Inkigayo, Music Core
with the other artists, showcasing their work, make the famous “comebacks”, new albums released
after a break of the artists.

Korean artists tend to expand generally their successes to Japan and China that are close

hand” of Psy with viral Gangnam Style.
K-POP is the opening window of South Korea to the world.

YG Entertainment, JYP Entertainment, Unit Cube etc.

1. Motivo do atentado: “ideologia radical”, “leis religiosas medievais”, “vertente
fundamentalista do Islã”, “terroristas treinados” e “extremistas”.
2. Desqualificação do motivo: “responsabilidade de combater as maçãs podres”, “desculpa
para matar inocentes” e “bode expiatório”.
1. Motivo do atentado: “livre expressão”, “intolerância religiosa” e “ações lamentáveis”.
2. Desqualificação do motivo: “refrear uma perigosa e crescente onda radical e xenofóbica”,
“movimentos ultraconservadores europeus”, “evitar a divisão do país” e “educação para a
tolerância”.
3. Repercussão: “defensor do direito irrestrito de satirizar”, “ataque de tamanha brutalidade”,
“homenagens aos colegas mortos”, “luto nacional”, “comoção mundial” e “eu sou Charlie”.
competência do manipulado.
As manifestações
A ISTOÉ apresenta a seguinte conclusão:
Intrinsecamente, a VEJA e a ISTOÉ

Fanfics – Because the story is not over until we say it is
If you love books, movies and/or TV shows, or if you're obsessed with a certain band and
have access to the Internet you might have heard about fandom, fan arts, and fan fiction. Just in
case, I'll give a brief description of these three elements that are essential for the understanding of
this article.
The word fandom comes from Fan Kingdom. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary Online
defines fandom as “all the fans”, what basically means that it is the group of fans of an artist,
movie, book, HQ, or TV show. A quick look on Tumblr.com and you’ll find a zillion fandoms; there
are blogs dedicated to popular book series like, Harry Potter and A Song of Ice and Fire, TV shows
and movies like Supernatural, Doctor Who and The Avengers and even artists like Tom Hiddleston
and Benedict Cumberbatch or bands and singers like One Direction and Demi Lovato. These
fandoms are huge fandoms, but there are some smaller ones too, like the Pacific Rim fandom, and
some almost non-existent, for not so popular shows or books. Roughly speaking, there are three
major activities you can participate when in a fandom; you can talk about what you like and what
you dislike, share your feelings, find friends (and you will find friends!).You can draw fanarts of
your favorite characters, that scene that you always loved, and even scenarios; or if you can’t
draw, you can look for drawings and share them with your friends. And the last activity (and the
one in which this article is focused), you can write and/or read fan fiction. Fanfics, or fan fiction,
are “stories involving popular fictional characters that are written by fans and often posted on the
Internet” (according to The Merriam-Webster Dictionary Online). Let's say that you didn't like the
ending of the Harry Potter series, and you happen to have just the perfect idea of what should
have happened, and you decide to write it and share it with your friends in the fandom. You've just
written a fanfic!
The fanfic phenomenon as we know today began in the Star Trek fandom in the 60s, when
the first fanzines were published. Since the advent of the Internet fan fiction has become more and
more popular. There are sites whose only purpose is the publishing of fan fiction works, the most
popular ones being, nowadays, FanFiction.net and Archive of Our Own (AO3); there are lots of
works being published on Tumblr and LiveJournal too. It’s always important to highlight that fan
fiction are not commercialized, in most cases. Only very recently the new Amazon service, Kindle
Words, has enabled ficwriters to sell their work, respecting copyright violations of course. There
are authors and creators that don’t mind that their fans create stories based on their works, some
even encourage the practice, acknowledging the benefits of fan fiction for creative writing and
reading. But some authors, like Anne Rice (Interview with the Vampire) and George R.R. Martin (A
Song of Ice and Fire) are strongly opposed to fan fiction, arguing that it’s copyright infringement
and stating that they do not want their characters to be written by someone else.
When we get into this world of fandom and fanfics we might be a little confused at first,
there are a lot of terms, names, a whole specific vocabulary. First off, we must know that canon is
the story as it is, and fanon is the story as it is accepted by the fandom. The fanon is (almost)
never an absurd idea, since it comes from the impressions and desires the fans get from the
original work. There are also head canons, that are basically the same thing as fanon, but more
personal ideas and not so widespread.
For example, in the BBC TV show Sherlock the main characters Sherlock Holmes and John
Watson are two straight man that are friends; this is the canon, how the story really is. But it’s
acknowledged by the fandom that Holmes and Watson are romantically attracted to each other. Of
course not everyone in the fandom agrees with the fanon ideas, but the idea is so widespread that
it’s almost natural to see things in that way.
Fan fiction is never canon, but follows the canon ideas. There are fanfics that use the
canonical portrayal of the characters, but put then in an alternative reality (AR – when something
in the storyline is changed) or in an alternative universe (AU – when the characters are put into a
different universe). And there are fanfics that don’t change any significant fact of the original story,
but just show some additional stories. An example of AR is when fans refuse to accept the death
of a loved character, so they decide to ignore this part of the canon and write stories in which this
character survives. The best example of a AU is the recent world phenomenon 50 Shades of Grey,
that was originally a AU fanfic of the Twilight books, portraying the relationship of Bella Swan and
Edward Cullen in a different universe. But most fanfics are just additional stories that don’t make
big changes in the canon.
Sometimes the ficwriter make a character OOC (Out Of Character). That means that the
ficwriter, by choice or because he or she is not a very skilled writer, made the character say or do
things that he wouldn’t say or do in the canon story. Sometimes this is intentional, mostly in
comedy/non-sense fan fiction, but most times this is a very important element when evaluating the
fanfic quality. Fans write their characters like they imagine them to be, but not all fans see the
same character the same way, and there’s always a universally accepted idea, the fanon, that is
the closest it can get to reality, or canon. The closer the portrayal is to the canon, the better. There
are also Original Characters (OC). They are not very popular in the fandoms, but there are lots of
fics with OCs.
One of the most important parts of fandoms and consequently of fan fiction: the ships! Ship
is short for relationship. For example, Bella Swan and Edward Cullen have a relationship, they're a
pair, so they are a ship. And they are a canon ship, since their relationship is real in the original
story. Sherlock Holmes and John Watson are also a ship, but a fanon ship. When there are two
persons of the same sex in the ship, like Holmes and Watson, it's called slash. Slash ships are
very popular, but almost always fanon, since there's very little representation of homosexual
relationships in media.
And with the term ship comes so many nice puns! I bet you’ve heard some crazy people
saying “I’ll go down with this ship!”. And when you have a ship that you love more than any other,
that’s your OTP, “One True Pairing”. Of course you can have more than one OTP; you’ll probably
have one for each fandom. And ships have names, also. Some are very obvious, like Johnlock (for
John and Sherlock), some require a little imagination, like Frostiron (for Iron Man and Loki, from
the Marvel Cinematic Universe). Most of fan fiction is written based on ships, but some focus
solely on one character. There are also friendship ships, and fan fiction for them. These ships are
often called BrOTP, and can also be canon or fanon.
Ship is also a verb: to ship. If you want a ship to be together, then you ship them. And if you
ship, then you're a shipper. Sometimes shippers of two different ships declare war. That's right, a
ship war!
Most people look for fanfics based on the ships they like, although some people don't really
care that much about ships and just read everything they think it's worth their time. But fanfics
have types or genres too, and each person has a favorite genre, naturally. Some of the most
common genres are slash, comedy/humor, romance, angst, drama, PWP, fluffy, NCs etc.
As we can see, there are lots and lots of genres and types of fan fiction, in every shape and
for every possible ship. Even if there are some controversial points among the creators of the
original works, fanfics are still being written and read by thousands of people around the world,
helping amateur writers to improve their writing skills, bringing the taste for reading to new
readers, and making many fans happy.

Existem sites cujo único propósito é a publicação
captam do trabalho original.
quase natural enxergar as coisas dessa forma.
Às vezes o escritor (ficwriter) faz o personagem OOC (out of character: fora do
personagem).
Sherlock Holmes and John Watson também
drama, PWP, fluffy, NCs, etc.

Interview with John Cotis
John Cotis is an Australian tutor in Academic English and Media Studies and Quality
Assurance Lead at the Kingston University London International Study Centre.
1 - How did you discover your love for Language Studies and Teaching?
By complete accident. I actually had absolutely no interest in language whatsoever. When
I graduated from university I had a first class degree, but wasn‟t sure what type of job I wanted.
One day I was reading the newspaper and saw an advertisement for a teaching position in Japan.
I didn‟t know anything about Japan, but I decided to go anyway. I worked as an English teacher in
Tokyo. I really enjoyed the experience and ended up living in Japan for over two years.
I don‟t necessarily love teaching English or language in particular. I would say I just
love teaching. I love the relationships I build with my students, I love crafting a great lesson which
goes very well and seeing all my students understanding the points I was trying to teach. I would
feel the same way if I was teaching politics or history or anything else. Teaching is about being
able to successfully transfer knowledge to people who need it. I‟ll always love that no matter what I
teach.
2 – Tell us about your professional experience. How did you start? What were some
of the challenges you have faced to get where you are today?
I graduated from university with a 1st class honours degree in philosophy. I wanted to go
on to do post graduate study, but decided I wanted to take a bit of a break. As I mentioned above I
ended up in Japan and became an English teacher. One of the major challenges I faced when I
got there was actually understanding the way my own language worked! Surprisingly, I have
actually come to understand more about English grammar since I began studying Portuguese
about four years ago. I think sometimes we underestimate how much studying another language
helps us both to understand our own language and also helps us teach it to other people.
In terms of professional challenges, I have faced several big ones. They are all really
related to the fact that I have had a rather eclectic career in teaching. I have taught in private
schools in Japan, government schools and private colleges in Australia, special needs schools,
middle class schools and universities in the U.K. Each of these schools presents a unique
challenge, because different schools means a different type of student and each different type of
student requires us as teachers to call upon a different set of skills.
3 – Is there any comical story you would like to share as well?
Teaching is full of comical stories. The one I remember most clearly, perhaps this isn‟t so
much comical as tragic or at the very least farcical, was my first lesson in Japan. I sit at a table
with a group of students and start a short lesson. Immediately the students begin asking me
questions about English grammar. Within five minutes I realise I don‟t know what they are talking
about. A few minutes after that I realised that they knew more about English grammar than I did. It
was very embarrassing and I spent the next few months reading several texts on English grammar
so it didn‟t happen again (it did, many times!).
4 – What are your teaching qualifications? Are they recognised in the UK? How
have they helped you?
I have an honours degree in Philosophy, a Master‟s degree in the History and Philosophy
of Science, a Graduate Diploma of Education and a Certificate of Qualified Teaching Status. In
Australia after you have completed a basic degree you can complete a one year teaching course
that will qualify you to teach in a set of subjects. When I moved to the U.K. I needed to complete a
short equivalency course called QTS (qualified teaching status) that confirmed that my
qualifications were valid. It took about six months and involved attending classes at university and
practical placements. As of now though they have changed the law so that teachers from
Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the U.S. no longer need to complete the course. All of my
courses have helped me because they have exposed me to different styles of teaching, different
strategies and methods of communicating with students and most importantly, different
educational philosophies.
5 – For those who want to be teachers or professors, in your opinion, what is the
secret of effective teaching?
Going back to something I was saying before. Having worked in many different types of
schools, from special needs to university, the key to being an effective teacher is understanding
that teaching is an art not a science. There is not one method that you apply all the time. A
classroom is not a laboratory where you can put the same ingredients into the jar and „pow!‟ you
get the same result time after time. Instead it is intuitive, you must get a sense of the students you
are teaching, work out the group dynamic, identify the different learning styles, the different
personalities at play, the different educational and personal needs of the students you are
teaching. In a way, you are a mass psychologist who has to analyse quickly a large number of
students and understand them and their needs very quickly. At first it will be slow and deliberate,
but over time you will be able to walk into a room and after thirty minutes know exactly who is who,
how the class works and what the best way is to teach them.
This idea feeds into Gardner‟s theory of multiple intelligences. There is not simply
one type of learner. There are many different types and as teachers, it is our responsibility to
differentiate the material that we deliver to our classes in order to provide for the most positive
outcomes.

primeira aula no Japão.
atividade.
Reino Unido precisei fazer um curso equivalente chamado QTS (qualified teaching status),
No início será lento e

No work! No school!
In its latest paper, IBGE pointed to a significant growth of a part of young Brazilians who
neither work or study: so called "No-No Generation".
The most recent National Research revealed that 1 out of 5 adolescents and young adults
isn't a part of the labor market, much less inserted in the education system. That means among
48,8 millions of people between 15 to 29 years old, almost 10 millions fit this category.
Even though the incidence of this phenomenon occurs with greater intensity in some
regions and social classes of the country than in others, growth of this group is not an isolated
event and can be seen across the country. The national average is 19.6%, and the South is the
one with the lowest rate of "no-no's" (15%) and the Northeast, the biggest rate (23.9%).
This problem, however, is not exclusive to Brazil. The report on Employment Trends World
2014 Organization International Labour Organisation (ILO) showed that unemployment among
young people continues to grow gradually. In 2013, 73.4 million people between 15 and 24 were
out of work. This number is almost 1 million more than the previous year and this ends up
generating a youth unemployment rate of 12.6%, more than double the overall unemployment rate
of 6.1%. This segment of people in this age group who neither work nor study grew in 30 of the 40
countries analyzed.
The causes that resulted in this scenario are not clear, since the IBGE survey had as goal
to trace the beginning of these people's profile, not question the reason why they are away from
work or studies. However, several reasons can be pointed out for the expansion and solidification
of the "No-No Generation".
Parenting - in this research it was found that 70.3% of people who are part of this new
generation are women. And, among them, 58.4% had at least one child. More than 32% of them
had not completed elementary school and only 5% were in college (or had finished it). Many
women end up choosing to stay at home with their children or do it for lack of vacances in
kindergartens. In one way or another, this fact implies the lack of opportunity for these women,
who can not go back to work so quickly. Mothers who come from the poorest areas have even
more difficulty in reconciling motherhood, work and study.
Education - the sooner motherhood comes, the greater is the chance that a mother will
drop the school and / or never go back. In the range of young people between 15 and 17 years, for
example, 88.1% of women without children studied. Among those who had a child or more, only
28.5% still in school. It's a huge difference.
The educational profile of "No-No's" followed the improvement of the general education in
Brazil. In 2002, almost half of "No-No's" had incomplete primary school, which fell to 32.4% in
2012. The proportion of "No-No's" with high school education went from 25.5% in 2002 to 38.6%
last year. Only 5.6% of them have completed higher education or are attending.
Option Staff - However, financial difficulties, lack of education or lack of job opportunities
are not the only causes for the increase of this generation. Many young people choose not to
attend college shortly after finishing high-school and not looking for a job. This situation, of course,
is possible for those who come from a favorable social condition. They can choose to travel the
world, volunteering or simply do nothing.
Labour market - IBGE shows that the non-economically active population, which is not
employed or seeking employment, grew 3% last year, the first increase since 2010. These young
people may not be inserted in the labor market by the lack of preparation and study or lack of
experience that first job usually requires (in the case of those who have never had any job).
Even with various analyzes being made about this slice of the population, one thing is
certain. The "No-No's" who have no family structure or appropriate social support is a risk factor
for society. Social scientists believe that this individual would have a increased potential to engage
in crime because of their social status, unemployment and lack of study.
Murillo de Andrade Berti – 4ALEN, 2015
Estudar? Não. Trabalhar?
emprego e estudo.

Pets’ reality
There are about 30 millions abandoned pets only in Brazil. Among these amount, about 10
millions are cats and the other 20 are dogs, according to WHO (World Health Organization). In
large cities, there is one dog out of 5 people. 10% are abandoned and, in smaller towns, the
situation is not different. In many cases the number reaches 1/4 of the human population.
Some of these animals are lucky enough to live in shelters, although the space and care
are restricted. They have a temporary home so that they can hopefully wait their adopters what will
make them part of a careful and loving family.
Fortunately, there is a growing number of adoption supporters. This happens because on
the internet there are blogs and websites on the subject, instructing about procedures and getting
donations to keep shelters which provide care to animals rescued in serious health conditions.
The animals bring comfort to our lives and physical benefits at any age. Studies show that
seniors are encouraged by the energy and good vibes of the dogs and consequently don’t need to
go to hospitals, compared to those people who do not live with them. The chances of developing
chronic dermatitis decrease when allergic children have a dog.
These little angels that don’t have wings also teach us the value of responsibility, because
they need our care to be well and happy. However it is necessary to think carefully before
choosing to have an animal in your life, as they will really be dependent on you. They develop our
emotional part because they always need care and attention, regardless of the problems occuring
around. We learn about love with the dedication they have to us this goes beyond any human
reasoning can conceive. The thrill of being received at home with all the joy of other life has no
explanation.
Despite all the knowledge available in the Information Age in which we live today,
people buy pets at very high values. While we see everywhere dogs and cats abandoned on the
streets, starving and being mistreated by people as cruel as those who left them there.
That is why we must have a good heart adopting a pet and giving it the love and dedication
it gives us. Then think about having an adopted pet, even if you can’t keep one. There’s no harm
in giving food, water and love for the cutest in the world.
Bárbara Rodrigues da Silva – 3ALEN, 2015
Realidade animal
No interior,
Enquanto vemos

Podcasts
The importance of listening continues beyond academic and professional environment.
Understanding how to practice properly communication even in your day to day life among
mates, friends and significant others is important for a plenty of reasons: encouraging your self-
esteem, increasing productivity, improving relationships and even becoming a better speaker.
Listening is not the same as hearing
“Hearing refers to the sounds that you hear, whereas listening requires more than that: it
requires focus. Listening means paying attention not only to the story, but how it is told, the use of
language and voice, and how the other person uses his or her body. In other words, it means
being aware of both verbal and non-verbal messages. Your ability to listen effectively depends on
the degree to which you perceive and understand these messages.”
Have you ever heard about podcasts? No? I’ll explain then!
A podcast is a show (as of music or talk) made available in digital format, usually mp3, for
an automatic download through internet. Its name came from two words: iPod (portable music
player) + Broadcast (to send out by radio or television). As learners of English, at least once your
teacher has told you the importance to keep in touch with its culture and its accent or even better
accents. A great strategy is to listen (not hear) every time you can, not only to music, movies and
TV series, but also to podcasts. There are many subjects of interests on the internet about them.
You can download it for free and then listen whenever and wherever you want. If you like British
accent, BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) for example has plenty of shows about news,
entertainment, sports, learning, comedy and so on, but if you prefer the American accent, NPR
(National Public Radio), from the USA, has many podcasts too. You can listen to them on your
way to work, to college, at the gym, doing chores and others activities.
Radio stations used this kind of audio, to broadcast the schedule to their listeners, like CBN
which besides using the web to broadcast their programs online, also offers podcasts of its
programs. Subsequently, podcasts became very famous in universities and schools abroad,
because they can help students that learn better listening than reading or even to give a support
for those whom missed a class.
If you are a teacher, it is important to emphasize that podcasts increase the students’
mobility and the flexibility to learn and turns classes more dynamic. There are two possibilities to
use them in your classroom. The first one is just use as a resource, the second is to turn it into a
project, students can make their own podcasts – it could be a group class or even an individual. It
helps the teachers also, sometimes it’s better to listen to an audio recording which you can do it
anywhere than to read lots of pages which you can’t do when you are driving, for example, or
doing chores. Besides, the cost is low.
Below there are some possible examples of podcasts activities in classroom:
The pupils make their own podcast to practice abilities like searching, writing, speaking
properly, attention and improve their vocabulary.
Audios recording of exposed classes which can be accessed when the pupils have doubt or
when a student missed a specific class.
The teacher can create specific podcasts for students with difficult for learning.
The teacher create review material or extra material to pupils download and study it
according to their convenience, therefore helping their skills on subjects they have more
difficulties.

dependem efetivamente do grau do quanto você percebe e entende essas mensagens.”
A primeira é usada
escrita, conversação, atenção e melhora do vocabulário.

Smart as a whip, sharp as a tack: satirical newspapers during the military regime
Figura 1 - The cartoon drawn by Sérgio Jaguar that resulted in the arrest of the whole staff from O Pasquim
The growing government-led military intervention in the media by the end of the 60s drove
the final nails into the coffin of freedom of press back in the day. This would push several
newspapers and broadcasting companies to their slow, painful death at the same time other new
media groups would rise from such a dark era for journalism. When the newspaper Carapuça
closed down due do the death of the editor-in-chief, Sérgio Porto, three members of the
"deceased" newspaper joined and established another newspaper: the cartoonist Jaguar
(nickname given to Sérgio de Magalhães Gomes Jaguaribe), and the journalists Tarso de Castro
and Sérgio Cabral. In that moment, one of the most popular and irreverent tabloids during the 70s
was born: O Pasquim.
The name was later suggested by Jaguar and stands for a "sleazy, infamous newspaper".
Jaguar explained their goal was to anticipate criticism regarding the newborn newspaper, stating
that "these people will need to make up new names to call us". Shortly after, the cartoonists
Ziraldo, Millôr, Prósperi, Claudius, and Fortuna as well as the contributors Henfil and Paulo
Francis joined the team which released the newspaper's first issue in June, 1969. They intended
to write a newspaper for mere humor purpose, but it quickly turned into a opposition newspaper as
the military regime grew hostile and strict in its repressive government.
The newspaper is responsible for setting and disseminating new standards within the
Brazilian journalism, like political cartoons and the use of humour and satire as tools to stand up
against abusive authorities as well as the establishment of a "casual language" when carrying out
interviews. Nevertheless, this particular characteristic was due to an "accident during the editorial
process" when they were about to publish an interview with Ibrahim Sued, a famous journalist and
columnist for social issues back in the day.
When they transcribed what had been said during the interview, a majority of the staff
wasn't used to copydesk (correcting common spoken language mistakes as well as grammar
mistakes). Since the staff had little time 'til printing process started, no further corrections were
made. This turned out to be one of the reasons why it was a blasting success in the very first issue
(20 thousand copies were sold).
Figura 2 - Cartoon drawn by the Brazilian cartoonist Laerte (right) paying a tribute to Glauco's cartoon (left), expressing the kind of humour made popular by O Pasquim
Besides the growing number of obstacles posed by the military government, O Pasquim
managed to keep its satirical sense „til the moment in which they faced their first major problem, in
1969. The newspaper's staff carried out an interview with the actress Leila Diniz, notorious for
speaking on her personal life with no embarrassment at all as well as for ignoring cultural taboos
common to the period in which the country lived. However, during the interview given to O
Pasquim, Leila mentioned much more intimate details, not the whole cursing and swearing. This
particular interview created so much fuss it actually drew the attention of the military government
which passed the "Press Law", granting the government full authority to intensify their means to
control media and worsen punishments inflicted upon journalists opposing to the government.
The newspaper's tale of woe, though, was only in its beginning. In November, 1970, the
whole staff was arrested when an issue of the newspaper showed an "irreverent, disrespectful
cartoon involving one of the greatest symbols of the Brazilian nation" made by the cartoonist
Sérgio Jaguar.
The symbol the military agents were talking about was the famous "Cry of Ipiranga"
painting, a symbol of the declaration of independence, in which D. Pedro I, emperor of Brazil in the
19th century, was satirized in the banks of Ipiranga Brook crying out: "Eu quero mocotó!"
(something like "I want some jelly!")
At first, the news regarding the detention of the newspaper staff could be out once the
newspaper was forced to omit any government actions regarding these sort of political action,
including the detention of its staff members. Eventually, the news went out anyway and it had
somehow managed to draw even attention of the staff from The New York Times 'which gave a
tiny part of its weekly paper to talk about the detention of O Pasquim's staff members and
interviewed Paulo Francis, the correspondent for O Pasquim in New York.
The military government hoped that the newspaper, then, would go out of print, but they
kept working under the leadership of the cartoonist Millôr Fernandes and, in 1971, the arrested
members were released.
Categorized as "Cheery Left",
an ironic term to describe leftists that
had no clear intention to undermine the
government, the newspaper faced
greater and greater hardships and the
acts of repression at the very
newspaper office, in Rio de Janeiro,
became frequent. Outside the
newspaper office, though, the
newsstands which used to sell
alternative tabloids and newspapers,
like O Pasquim, suffered several bomb
attacks as a way to desestimulate the
sales of this particular kind of
newspaper.
When a discussion about a
political opening process started, the
newspaper's quality of content began Figura 3 - A cartoon drawn by the Brazilian cartoonist Laerte on the rebirth of a party aligned with the military government
to decrease due to the "centralization of the censorship", which forced the staff to send the
material they intended to punlish to Brasilia so they could "evaluate the next issue's content". Still,
Sérgio Jaguar managed to pull a trick by sending a huge amount of material claiming that all of
that would be in the next issue of the newspaper. The truth is that only a small fraction of that
immense pile of paper would actually be in the next issue.
As soon as the political opening process started, O Pasquim, the newspaper which created
a "new kind of journalism" in Brazil due to its satirical approach, the staff felt like the newspaper
had lost its reason to be once it had become an opposition newspaper. Financial issues resulting
from the harsh military government restriction applied to the newspaper also had its share in the
death of the newspaper since they affected its structures to the bone.
By the end of 1985, the creation of several newspapers with a similar approach to the one
created by O Pasquim summed up with the feeling of discouragement and, then, several staff
members left until only Sérgio Jaguar was the only one left. He managed the newspaper on his
own until the beginning of the 90's, when the newspaper closed down.

exemplares vendidos).
Figura 5 - Charge de Laerte (à direita) homenageia a de Glauco (à esquerda), mostrando a
essência do cartoon crítico popularizado pelas publicações d'O Pasquim
A redação
intensas e frequentes diretamente
em sua redação, no Rio de Janeiro.
Fora da redação, bancas que
vendiam jornais independentes e
alternativos, como O Pasquim,
passaram a sofrer constantes
atentados à bomba como forma de
desestimular a venda do jornal.
Quando a discussão acerca de
uma abertura política começou, o
jornal começou a perder a qualidade
a estrutura do jornal.

The 5 greatest NBA dynasties of all time
Winning just one championship is not enough, especially in the National Basketball
Association (NBA). Basketball fans love consistency. They love talking about the teams that
were/are dominant throughout the over 65-year old league, which was formed in 1946 as the
Basketball Association of America (BAA) and merged with the National Basketball League (NBL)
in 1949, giving birth to the NBA.
To create the following ranking, only the teams who won multiple NBA championships over
the course of a small period of time are being considered. Also, the ranking doesn't take into
account the seasons played by the Denver Nuggets, Indiana Pacers, New York Nets (now
Brooklyn Nets) and San Antonio Spurs in the American Basketball Association (ABA), which was
founded in 1967 and merged with the NBA in 1976.
Honorable mentions
The George Mikan Minneapolis Lakers (1949-1954)
A little while before moving to Los Angeles, the Lakers played in Minneapolis, Minnesota for
13 seasons between 1947 and 1960. And they were pretty dominant in the first years of the
league, winning 5 championships in six seasons, led by center George Mikan, who was
considered the greatest player of the century's first half.
In these 5 championship seasons, they beat the Washington Capitols once, the New York
Knicks twice and the Syracuse Nationals (now the Philadelphia 76ers) twice in the Finals.
The "Big Three" Miami Heat (2011-2014)
In 2011, LeBron James and Chris Bosh united with Dwyane Wade in Miami to form one the
greatest "Big Threes" of all time. In their four years together, the Big Three reached the NBA
Finals four seasons straight, winning in two of these occasions.
They lost to the Dallas Mavericks in 2011 and defeated the Oklahoma City Thunder and
San Antonio Spurs in 2012 and 2013, respectively, and lost to the same Spurs in 2014. After that,
James decided to return to Cleveland. Bosh and Wade remained with the Heat.
Top 5
5. The Shaq and Kobe Los Angeles Lakers (1999-2004)
From 1999 to 2004, the NBA was ruled by one of greatest duos in basketball history.
Shaquille O'Neal, coming from Orlando, and Kobe Bryant, arguably the best shooting guard after
Michael Jordan's retirement, led the Los Angeles Lakers to four NBA Finals appearances in 5
years.
Even though the two were not very fond of each other, Shaq and Kobe's talent was too
much for the opponents. They won 3 straight championships from 2000 to 2002, winning 12 of the
15 games they played in the NBA Finals over this 3-year period. In 2003, however, they were
eliminated by the San Antonio Spurs in the Conference Semifinals. In 2004, the Los Angeles
Lakers reached the Finals once again, but lost 4 to 1 to the Detroit Pistons.
Due to Bryant and O'Neal locker room issues, Shaquille was traded to the Miami Heat in
2004, ending the early 2000s Lakers' dynasty.
4. The "Showtime" Los Angeles Lakers (1979-1991)
This Los Angeles Lakers team, popularly known as the "Showtime" Lakers, revolutionized
how the game was played. Led by legends Magic Johnson, arguably the greatest point guard of all
time, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the all-time leader in points scored (38.387 points), the Los
Angeles Lakers often turned defense into lethal offense in two or three seconds with flashy
passes, dunks and alley-oops.
In 12 seasons, they reached the Finals nine times, winning in five of these occasions. This
included a stretch from 1985 to 1988 in which they won 3 championships in four years.
Kareem announced his retirement in 1989, but that didn't prevent the Showtime Lakers from
reaching the NBA Finals for a last time in 1991, failing to win a sixth championship.
Also in 1991, Magic Johnson announced his retirement after testing positive for HIV,
bringing an end to the unforgettable Showtime Lakers.
3. The Tim Duncan San Antonio Spurs (1998-present)
If consistency determines how great a dynasty is, then you can't leave the San Antonio
Spurs out of this list. In the last 16 seasons, the Spurs made six NBA Finals appearances.
Considering percentage, that is the lowest number of any dynasty listed in this ranking. But
again, you have to consider consistency. Since Tim Duncan, regarded by many as the greatest
power forward of all time, was drafted in 1998, the San Antonio Spurs have never failed to reach
the NBA postseason. And most impressively, they never won less than 50 games in each of the
last fifteen regular seasons they played.
The Spurs won in 5 out of the six times they reached the Finals. They beat the New York
Knicks in 1999, the New Jersey Nets (now Brooklyn Nets) in 2003, the Detroit Pistons in 2005 and
the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2007. After six years of absence, they made the championship round in
2013, but lost to the Miami Heat. However, in the following year, the Spurs and the Heat met once
again in the Finals, with San Antonio coming out on top this time.
Although Tim Duncan is the centerpiece of the Spurs dynasty, San Antonio was never an
one-man show. David Robinson helped him in his two first championships. The French point guard
Tony Parker and the Argentinian shooting guard Manu Ginobili were important parts of the Spurs'
titles in the 2000s. Kawhi Leonard was named the Most Valuable Player in the team's most recent
NBA Finals appearance. And they also have had Gregg Popovich, one of the greatest head
coaches in the history of basketball.
2. The Bill Russell Boston Celtics (1956-1969)
Bill Russell was not one of the best scorers of all-time. In his 13-year career, he averaged
around 15 points per game. Nowadays, usually three or four guys of the league's top teams
average this amount. He still managed to be one of the most dominant players in basketball
history. He averaged over 22 rebounds per game in his career, was named to the All-Star Game
twelve times and received the Most Valuable Player award five times.
He spent his entire career with the Boston Celtics. In thirteen seasons, the Celtics made 12
NBA Finals appearances, including ten straight from 1957 to 1966. They were NBA champions in
11 of these occasions. Yes, eleven. In thirteen years. They won titles in 1957, 1959, 1960, 1961,
1962, 1963, 1964, 1965, 1966, 1968 and 1969. Their 8 straight championships are a league-best.
But the 1950s/1960s Celtics were not an one-man show either. Over the Bill Russell era,
the Celtics had 13 players who would end up being nominated to the Basketball Hall of Fame.
They were living proof that basketball is a team sport.
1. The 1990s Chicago Bulls (1990-1993, 1995-1998)
When you think of the NBA, you think of Michael Jordan. And when you think of Michael
Jordan, you think of the amazing Chicago Bulls dynasty in the 1990s. No other team in the history
of the NBA did anything similar to it.
In the six seasons between 1990-1993 and 1995-1998, the Bulls made six NBA Finals
appearances. And they won the championship six times. Thanks to that, they are the only team in
the league that went to the championship round multiple times and never finished as the runner-
up.
The Chicago Bulls won 388 out of 492 regular seasons games during their dynasty, which
equals to a 78,86% win percentage. They also had the greatest regular season performance ever
in 1995-96, winning 72 games and losing only 10.
Their postseason record was also outstanding- they won 90 out of 116 games. The Bulls
only had to play a seven-game playoff series twice.
Although the 1990s Chicago Bulls had the greatest player of all-time, Michael Jordan didn’t
won six championships all by himself. They also had players like Scottie Pippen, considered one
of the greatest defenders ever, Dennis Rodman for their last 3 titles, regarded as one of the best
rebounders of all-time, and some incredible role players such as John Paxson, Steve Kerr and
Toni Kukoc.

temporadas jogadas pelo Denver Nuggets, Indiana Pacers, New York Nets (agora Brooklyn Nets)
Nessas 5 temporadas vitoriosas, eles venceram o Washington Capitols uma vez, o New
York Knicks duas vezes e o Syracuse Nationals (agora Philadelphia 76ers) duas vezes nas finais.
O trio do Miami Heat (2011-2014)
4. "Showtime" Los Angeles Lakers (1979-1991)
Eles ganharam do New
Nenhum outro time

The importance of young adult literature
We all know that literature should be a part of everyone’s lives, but with
technology, busy routines and lack of incentive, people are reading less and
less. However, young people are reading more nowadays, due to the boom of
young adult literature that happened in the past two decades, and this is a great
thing.
Young adult literature is a relatively new expression:
the first book released specifically for teenagers was
“Seventeenth Summer”, by Maureen Daly in 1942. It is a
realistic story about a boy and a girl who fall deeply in love,
but the summer is about to end and they’re going separate
ways. As time went by, more and more writers were
influenced by Daly’s and the number of books addressed to
teenagers grew a lot – Judy Blume and S.E. Clinton are
authors whose books were also very successful. However,
the books for teenagers at that time were mainly realistic,
focused in only one problem and about serious themes, like
divorce and drugs; teenagers eventually became tired of the same formula,
which made books publishers in the next decades to look for different themes,
and in the beginning of the second millennium this kind of literature was
definitely consolidated.
According to researches made by publishing
companies like Scholastic, teenagers usually preferred
things that are real, but not necessarily realistic – the
point is that the reader must feel empathy towards a
certain character or connect with a certain situation, but
they didn’t want a portrait of their lives. A good example
of that is J.K. Rowling’s “Harry Potter” series – which
goes without saying it was a huge success, and it still is
– because even though the world is completely unreal,
with witches and wizards and supernatural creatures,
deeply is a tale of friendship, love and courage.
J.K. Rowling was important to young adult literature
because Harry Potter started something very good: the
teenagers started to like reading. Many writers after the
publication of the first book, “The Philosopher’s Stone”, were
very successful. Lemony Snickett’s “A Series of Unfortunate
Events”, composed by thirteen books about three children,
orphan siblings, thriving through very bad situations after
their parents died, sold more than sixty million copies. We
can also mention Meg Cabot, with “The Princess Diaries”
series, which made girls all over the world laugh and cry with Mia Thermopolis,
a teenage girl whose life turns upside down when her distant grandmother
comes to tell her she is a princess of a far away country. More recently, we can
mention Stephenie Meyer and the Twilight saga, a huge success that tells the
story of Isabella Swan, a teenager that falls in love with a guy and he turns out
to be a vampire.
More recent books, published near 2010, still
have a touch of supernatural, like “The Vampire Diaries”
series by L.J. Smith, or “The Mortal Instruments” series
by Cassandra Clare, but the trend was dystopian fiction.
“The Hunger Games” is one of them – it is a trilogy by
Suzanne Collins, and it is set in Panem, a country
divided in districts and ruled by the Capitol. As a
punishment for an uprising that happened long before,
the districts have to send a boy and a girl between 12
and 18 years old to fight in the Hunger Games, an event
in which the participants are put in an arena controlled
by the Capitol and have to fight to death. The story is narrated by a sixteen-
year-old girl named Katniss Everdeen, a girl who volunteers to go to the games
to save her younger sister. Another dystopian book who was very successful
was “Divergent” by Veronica Roth, which is set in a society divided by factions
based on the people’s dispositions, avoiding independent will – those who have
it, called divergent, are killed, and the protagonist, Beatrice Prior, is one of
them. The reason dystopian fiction is still so popular is related to the teenager’s
preferences like we said before – something real, but not realistic. It shows
everyday life, situations and feelings in a not-everyday environment or situation.
However, this is also changing – some say that is
getting even more sophisticated. The market is as full of
supernatural and dystopian fiction as it can handle, and
publishers now are looking for another kind of fiction:
contemporary realism. Even though it wasn’t the first of
the kind, John Green’s “The Fault in Our Stars” needs to
be highlighted in that point – the love story of Hazel
Grace Lancaster, a girl who is battling cancer, and
Augustus Waters, a boy who survived cancer, published
in 2014, was a major hit and made the author and the
kind of book very popular (according to The New York
Times, there is even an expression: “Green-lit”, which describes writers whose
work is similar to John Green’s!). Still in the contemporary realism genre, there
is Rainbow Rowell’s “Eleanor & Park”, which is mainly a love story between two
misfit teenagers – Park is a half-American, half-Korean boy, and Eleanor is an
overweight girl who is bullied at school. We can also mention R.J. Palacio’s
“Wonder”, which tells the story of a ten-year-old boy who has a severe facial
deformity and wants to fit in.
Young adult literature is very popular – and not only among teenagers.
According to a survey by Brown Market Research, 55% of young adult novels
are actually bought by adults. That statistic drew some criticism aimed at adults
who read YA novels, but the readers and publishing company agents say that
the genre is getting more sophisticated than ever, approaching deeply
emotional and intense topics, with strong voices: authentic and quirky individual
voices, which reads as deeply sincere, making the readers feel more empathy
towards the characters.
One thing is for sure: the boom of young adult fiction encouraged many
people to start reading (and many authors to start writing) and this is the best
contribution the genre could’ve made. Sales of books in general increased and
sales of YA books increased even more, and with the help of new technology
and the high number of e-books sales, they will hopefully continue to increase.
Hopefully, in a near future, literature will be present in everyone’s lives, and this
will happen due to young adult literature.

A expressão “literatura young adult” é relativamente
Ainda no realismo
literatura juvenil.

The Women in Hamlet
William Shakespeare was the most important author of the Renaissance. In his works,
Shakespeare explores the human mind and its complexity; the occult and the philosophy of that
period; and his characters, differently from the characters in Greek tragedies, are the authors of
their own downfalls. This is made clear, for instance, when Gertrude and Ophelia, the only women
in the play, are analysed. They are both believed by Hamlet to be weak and deceiving, though
each in her own manner are therefore portrayed as such. The purpose of this paper is to analyse
these women and the reasons why they are found to be deserving of their fates and to compare
their actions and how they can be compared with what women still experience in the XXI century.
The first impression the reader has about Gertrude is that she had committed a mortal sin.
That would be the only reason why Hamlet would think so low about her. In Act I, Scene II, after
their first interaction in the play, Hamlet, finding himself alone in the room, expresses his distaste
for what his mother had done.
O God! a beast that wants discourse of reason,
Would have mourn’d longer,—married with mine uncle,
My father’s brother; but no more like my father
Than I to Hercules: within a month;
Ere yet the salt of most unrighteous tears
Had left the flushing in her galled eyes,
She married:— O, most wicked speed, to post
With such dexterity to incestuous sheets!
That’s when the reader finds out why was Hamlet so hurt by his mother: she had married
her dead husband’s brother, Claudius, shortly after his death. She is compared to something
worse than a beast, something that cannot control its wills and instincts (for, in the same speech,
he cries: “Why, she would hang on him/As if increase of appetite had grown/By what it fed on”), or,
even, something so deceiving that perhaps her mourning for her dead husband had not been real.
Hamlet talks about his mother as though she was a villain, as though she had no respect
whatsoever either for her husband’s death or for her son’s feelings. Only when dying did she seem
to do something right, for, by mistakenly drinking the drink Claudius had poisoned for Hamlet, she
warned her son of such treachery.
Hamlet is so angry with his mother, so utterly disgusted by her actions, that he professes
“Frailty, thy name is woman”, thus generalising all women into one characteristic: weakness of
character. It’s not surprising, therefore, that the other female character in the play seems to have
that exact problem: Ophelia, the woman who, at first, seemed to be the object of Hamlet’s
affection, is easily convinced by her father, Polonius, not to give in to Hamlet’s attempts any
longer, for, according to Polonius, the hero’s feelings towards her were not real.
POL. This is for all:
I would no, in plain terms, from this time forth,
Have you so slander any moment leisure,
As to give words or talk with the Lord Hamlet.
Look to’t, I charge you. Come your ways.
OPH. I shall obey, my lord.
The fact that Ophelia obeys his father with such promptitude makes the reader wonder
whether or not she had any willpower whatsoever, for, even though she had received an order
from her father, had she been enough in love with Hamlet, she might have been brave enough to
rebel against the order. By having obeyed her father, she refused to be left alone with Hamlet until
she was forced to. Interesting to notice is that him who made her be alone with Hamlet again was
her own father, who was sure that Hamlet, who by then had found out about his father’s murder
and acted as a crazy person to deceive everyone, had gone crazy due to the impossibility of his
love with Ophelia.
Their encounter, however, ended up in Hamlet offending Ophelia for the one thing she
could not control: being a woman. He denied his love for her as well as told her to go to a
“nunnery” (which, at the time the play was written, could mean both a monastery and a brothel).
If thou dost marry, I’ll give thee this plague for thy dowry: be thou as chaste as ice, as pure as snow, thou shalt not escape calumny. Get thee to a nunnery, farewell. Or, if thou wilt needs marry, marry a fool; for wise men know well enough what monsters you make of them. To a nunnery, go; and quickly too. Farewell.
In the excerpt above, is plain to see that Hamlet believes that no woman is worthy of
something. Whatever “monsters” men may become, Hamlet believes they have only women to
blame. Ophelia, of course, does not take such offenses so well. Such rejection, as well as her
father’s death in Act III, Scene IV, may have accounted for her apparent suicide in Acct IV, Scene
VII.
GER. There, on the pendant boughs her coronet weeds
Clambering to hang, an envious sliver broke,
When down her weedy trophies and herself
Fell in the weeping brook. Her clothes spread wide,
And mermaid-like a while they bore her up,
Which time she chanted snatches of old lauds
As one incapable of her own distress,
Or like a creature native and indued
Unto that element. But long it could not be
Till that her garments, heavy with their drink,
Pulled the poor wretch from her melodious lay
To muddy death.
Another thing which is worthy of noticing is the fact that suicide is regarded, until today for
many people, an act of weakness. The fact is suicide, at the time of the play, was seen as an act
forbidden by God. Thus is said so by Hamlet in Act I, Scene II (“... that the Everlasting had not
fix’d/His canon ‘gainst self-slaughter!”). Bearing this in mind, it may be safe to say that Ophelia, by
having given in to an act forbidden by God, is not only weak, but destined to spend the eternity
upon God’s wrath.
Ophelia and Gertrude, therefore, could not be more different, even in death. The latter
lacked whatever willpower she was supposed to have, whereas Gertrude, by marrying Claudius
and afterwards warning Hamlet about the threat against his life, did only the things she thought
right at the time. Gertrude, whenever faced by things that could disturb her. The one situation they
did have in common, however, was that both were wronged by the men closest to them: Ophelia,
by her father and Hamlet; Gertrude, by Claudius (for, although it is not clear whether Gertrude
knew about Claudius’ plan to murder the King, she did try to save her son’s life).
Some authors believe that the two women in the play are as deceiving as Hamlet believes
them to be, for they did everything in their power to disguise who they really were (Gertrude, by
avoiding every conflict situation that could concern her; and Ophelia, by making herself appear
more attractive than she really was for Hamlet’s eyes)1; whereas others believe that there is
misogyny in the play “Hamlet”, for the actions of the women in the play, specially Gertrude’s
actions, are what create most of the issues present thereby (such as Gertrude marrying Claudius,
Ophelia’s suicide that leads to a fight between her brother, Laertes, and Hamlet), and that such
misogyny is only a consequence of the way women were seen in Shakespeare’s time2.
Misogyny is indeed present in “Hamlet” as well as in the present world. Both Gertrude and
Ophelia were constantly mistreated and deemed to be weak creatures due to the sole fact that
they were women. On the one hand, we have Gertrude, who was thought a sinner by her son for
having an apparent sexual appetite, which seemed to offend her son to enormous extents. Sadly,
the same thing happens today, when women who have active sexual lives and are not ashamed of
it are called by degrading names, whereas men can do whatever they please without hearing a
word against them. Ophelia, on the other hand, was the girl who did not seem to know what she
wanted, being too kind, too naive or having too low of a self-esteem to know what to fight for.
Funnily enough, this kind of woman is also disrespected in today’s time, for they are called “saints”
in a pejorative way, as though they were either pretending to be such or actually were saint, but
too dull because of that. For “Hamlet’s” women and for women today there is only the lose
situation, where, no matter what they do, they will be weak or the cause of evil.
Although women today have a bigger role in society than then used to in Shakespeare’s
time, the way they are portrayed in the play is, unfortunately, up-to-date. The judgement women
suffer today is not much different than the judgement they suffered in Shakespeare’s time. Proof of
that is the fact that women are still seen as the “weaker sex”, and, whenever a woman does the

Visiting Washington DC
Founded in 1791 on July 16, the capitol of United States, District of Columbia, is also known
by “the district” or simply D.C. This city is unique among the others because it was established by
American Constitution to be the Capitol. Right after the Independence in 1776, the U.S.A did not
have a definite capitol, the official meetings had been held in nine different cities. In 1783, a band
of unpaid soldiers took the Congress while its members were meeting in Pennsylvania,
Philadelphia. The local authorities refused to attack and the event emphasized the need for an
independent capitol.
The states of Maryland and Virginia donated land to form the district. The President George
Washington choose the region near the Potomac River to harbor the new federal city. In 1871 the
Congress returned the land to Virginia.
Plans for Washington D.C by Pierre Charles L’Enfant
D.C is ranked 9th of 25 best places to go in the United States according to Tripadvisor. The
District has many attractions and festivals to all ages and tastes, besides The White House, the
Capitol and the Washington Monument, which are a must see for those who visit the city.

The White House
The first stop is the Botanical Garden. More than two hundred years ago, George
Washington had a vision for the capital city: a Botanical Garden that would demonstrate and
promote the significance of plants. His wish was accomplished in 1820, when the Congress gave
space for its construction, and was founded in 1850. Today, there are many events on it, including
yoga classes to guide tours and mothers with snuggled babies.
The Washington Monument
The Smithsonian Institute is an educational and research center that has around 18
museums and galleries at the National Mall and 7 research centers. Many of them are free of
charge and other attractions charge a small fee, usually around 2 dollars, to help with the
maintenance. Besides that, there are 13 museums spread through the city, including the
Holocaust Museum and the National Geographic Museum.

The National Zoological Park is the favorite of many people. Up to two million guests visits
the zoo each year. Some people go there for running or walking while kids have fun watching the
giant pandas Tian Tian, Mei Xiang and baby Bao Bao. They are home to 2.000 individual animals
of nearly 400 different species, a quarter of them are endangered, just like our Golden Lion
Tamarin. The Zoo is also a research, conservation, educational and sustainability center.

Thomas Jefferson Memorial at the Cherry Blossom Festival
Great Falls Park
At the District, there is also many historical places like George Washington and Abraham Lincoln’s house and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, where you can read the saying “Freedom is not free”. However, D.C. is not only a Concrete Jungle, there are many parks and squares just as Great Falls Park and Rock Creek Park, where you can do picnics, trails, rock climbing and enjoy outdoor with family and friends.
If you plan your trip to D.C between March and April, make sure to walk along the Potomac River. At this time happens the bloom of the cherry trees and the landscape becomes even more beautiful in all shades of pink. During the weekends The National Cherry Blossom Festival, there are music, dance, food and parades organized by the Japanese community. This event celebrates spring in Washington, the first cherry trees, and to make stronger friendship between people from United States and Japan.

abrigar o distrito federal.

museu do Holocausto e o museu do National Geographic.

vive a cidade. D.C possui muitos parques e praças, como o Parque Great Falls e o Rock Creek
