Information of the history of product can be gathered with the Pasteur fresh tag: a very cheap logger for perishable products has been developed. The advantage of this logger is that it can measure several environmental conditions, such as temperature and moisture content but also ethylene concentrations, giving an quality prediction, using the incorporated quality decay models. These tags will give rise to a better valorisation in the supply chain.

In evolving to a biobased economy we need to reduce out dependency on fossil fuels and petrochemical materials. Important sources for biobased materials are agrofood residues (potato peel, sugar beet pulp, wheat husks, tomato stalks/leaves, press cake from oil industry, cocoa husks etc), food or municipal waste and non-food sources such as grasses, wood or seaweed. Some examples of materials developed by Wageningen UR Food & Biobased Research are: Tomato packaging boxes produced from tomato waste (stalks and leaf) Agro food residues or municipal solid waste as feedstock for the production of (bio-based) chemicals, for example medium chain carboxylic acid which can be used for paint is a promising alternative to using petrochemical or food compounds as substrate. Starch and cellulose fibres are used for these compostable and biodegradable egg cartons Different types of biomass can be used for cost efficient production of building blocks for bioplastics that are “fit-for-use”, for example suitable for hot fill or UV resistant. Building blocks such as PLA have been predominantly produced from so-called first generation feed stocks, for example sugar, but the research focus of WUR is on using second generation, or non-food, feedstocks. A successful example of development of a “fit-for-use” bioplastic product are these plant pots which are based on a PLA blend. The pots are suitable for use in automated cultivation processes, do not lose shape at the relatively high temperatures in the greenhouses and are of comparable price to the standard polypropylene pots. Development of a biomass-based binder that will allow production of a high-quality board material from reed waste that meets all technological and ecological demands. This will provide the building and construction industry and kitchen and furniture producers with a sustainable alternative for board material with synthetic resins from petroleum. Bio-asphalt made using lignin instead of the fossil bitumen, this asphalt is currently being tested in The Netherlands (province of Zeeland) Bioplastics from seaweed, WUR is investigating various possibilities of creating plastics from seaweed.
