Things are changing at the Sheyenne Care Center. The chapel and the new North end addition have received a lot of compliments from residents, families, and visitors. As we move into Fall, we are hustling to get everything done on the outside of the building project. If you haven’t driven by the Sheyenne Care Center lately, we encourage you to do so. The middle portion of the construction project is close to having the
exterior completed. The shingles are on and the windows are in with siding being installed and the brick to be installed in the near future. The landscaping of grass, new plants and decorative rock around the new chapel and the north addition have made the construction project start to look more like a new home. The completion of the interior of phase II is still set for March of 2018, so please understand that we are still under construction and want to make sure our residents stay safe and secure. As you visit, please remember to close doors behind you as
you come to see family and friends. Along with the construction work, we continue to strive to meet the quality needs of our residents. I want to tell everyone how proud I am of the staff at Sheyenne Care Center and their dedication and commitment in meeting the quality needs of each resident who resides here. Over the past several months, staff has been submitting the quality best practices they are doing here in our ministry, to the American Health Care Association’s (AHCA/NCAL) Quality Program. The AHCA/NCAL National Quality Award Program provides a pathway for providers such as the Sheyenne Care Center’s Long-Term Services to journey towards performance excellence. The program is based on the core values and criteria of the Baldrige Performance Excellence Program. This oversees the nation’s only Presidential award program for performance excellence. The Quality Award Program provides three progressive levels of
awards: Bronze—Commitment to Quality, Silver—Achievement in Quality, or Gold—Excellence in Quality. Each level has its own distinct rigorous requirements for quality and performance excellence. Applications are judged by trained examiners, who provide feedback on opportunities for improvement in order to support continuous learning. It is exciting to announce to family members and community members of Valley City that
the Sheyenne Care Center staff has achieved the Silver Quality Award. This Award will be presented at the AHCA/NCAL national convention in October of this year. Please join me in thanking all the staff at Sheyenne Care Center for their commitment in making our ministry a home. Thank you for all your support! If you have any questions or concerns about the Sheyenne Care Center, please contact me. - Craig Christianson, CEO

Our 3rd floor art group has been very busy over the past few weeks. The group members individually made trees and then to add to the dramatic affect, they each did a portion of a larger tree as well. The residents in this group are loving it and our staff members who are
assisting them have enjoyed it as well. We are looking forward to their next project that is going to pull in the entire 3rd floor – residents and staff alike. Be sure to watch for the completed projects next time you come to visit.

New Medicare Cards Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has redesigned Medicare cards. New cards are set to be mailed out with Medicare benefits in April 2018. The new cards will no longer include social security numbers but rather will include a randomly assigned number. When you receive these new cards in the mail, please be sure to contact our business office at (701)845-8222 with the new information as soon as possible so we can be sure to have the most accurate and current information on file for your loved one. Thank you in advance.
We are very excited to announce that we have recently added Chair Yoga as a
new activity for our residents. Leading the class, is Ashley Ryerson. Ashley is a
Certified Yoga Specialist and also happens to be one of our talented Certified Nursing
Assistants. With her background of being a CNA, Ashley knows and understand the
limitations of the residents she is working with and always has their best interests in
mind. The class is still very new so we have only held a few
sessions at this point in time, but the residents that have been
involved so far have truly enjoyed it and they are hoping that it
will help to improve their limited range of motion.

Pastoral Care Update We’ve had a busy and a very exciting summer. With great expectation, we wait-
ed for the day that we’d move into the new chapel and when we finally did, our experi-
ence in doing so greatly exceeded our expectations. The new Chapel of St. Raphael
is a beautiful space for worship services and prayer. Just recently, the final step was
completed with the installation of the beautiful stained glass windows, thanks to our
various generous donors.
Along with the new chapel, we also have two new chaplain offices, whereas pre-
viously, we all shared one small space. Having two offices gives us privacy for visits
and the workspace to accomplish things more efficiently. Working through the con-
struction zone has been challenging at times, but as we see the results, we’re as-
sured that it is well worth the time and effort. The extra steps have also proven favora-
ble to the waistline.

On July 20th we held a dedication service
to mark the official opening of the chapel. We
had a wonderful turn out of residents and
community members. Bishop John Folda was
here to conduct the prayer and the blessing of
the new space. Our chapel is officially named
Chapel of St. Raphael. St. Raphael the
Archangel is recognized for his healing ministry
and is our patron saint.
We continue to provide ministry to
residents, families, and staff members. We
provide Tuesday worship services and Friday
morning Bible studies. Local ministers provide
weekend services in our chapel, giving the
residents the opportunity to stay in contact with
their local pastors. We do
one to one visits, and are available to families, and residents in times of daily needs
and at end of life.
We have experienced some personnel changes in our department recently.
Pastor Allan Gerber decided it was time to take retirement a bit more seriously and is
now picking up hours as needed. Pastor Foster Beckstrand has changed from the
very part-time hours he worked before and is now working the schedule that Pastor
Allan retired from, so we are now blessed with his assistance three days per week.
We also have local ministers that are helping us with on call ministry on the
weekends. We are very grateful for their help as it allows us the ability for us to take
some time as needed.
The Sheyenne Care Center is a place that our residents call home. We share
this connection with them, as it is a place that brings together family, friends, and
community. Being a part of this family is faith building and rewarding for us. We learn
so much from our residents as they share their faith and life stories with us. We are
blessed and pray that blessing flow forth to all.

Gluten Free Gluten is the protein found in the endosperm of grains, especially wheat, which gives dough its elastic texture. The name gluten comes from the Latin word meaning ‘glue’. Gluten free diets have had media coverage over the last decade or so. Some consume a gluten free diet to have a positive impact on their health. If a meal plan is high in processed breads, pasta, cookies and other wheat product, one will likely find health benefits by removing those products and substituting more nutritious items like fruits and vegetables. Some individuals may be allergic to wheat. An allergic reaction can cause one’s skin and mucous membranes (eyes, nose, and throat) to become inflamed due to a histamine reaction in your body upon consumption of the offending product. Avoiding wheat products will keep the allergic reaction from occurring. Celiac disease or gluten intolerance is a hereditary autoimmune disease. Essentially when someone has celiac disease, one’s body overreacts to the protein in gluten and sends out its own proteins (antibodies) to attack. The villi (small finger shaped out growths) which increase the absorption of nutrients in the small intestine are damaged as a result of this attack of the body on the consumed gluten. Complete avoidance of gluten is the solution.
Where is Gluten Located? Wheat – one of the most common sources of gluten. Wheat free doesn’t mean gluten free, though. Wheat is found in many more products than one might realize as it positively impacts food quality and taste. Oats – mainly due to cross contamination in the manufacturing process. The equipment that processes oats also processes wheat and the machines aren’t able to be cleaned well to enough to ensure the complete removal of all wheat gluten. Rye – found in certain breads, crackers, and distilled alcoholic beverages. Barley – found in beer, but also may be in ingredient in canned soups. If the product contains malt, it also contains barley. Reading labels requires some detective work to ensure that a product is truly gluten free. There are resources online if celiac disease is a concern.

4-H Expo & Fashion Show
Over the past several years, as well as this year, we have been blessed to host the 4-H fashion review right here at the Sheyenne Care Center. This has allowed our residents to get the full experience what the kids have done and how their work is judged. It is always a great time for those involved.
This year, not only did they hold the fashion review here, but they brought the entire expo to the Sheyenne Care Center so that the residents could see the projects that the 4-H members chose to research and their poster presentation. This too, was a judged contest and it was so much fun for the residents and staff to be a part of this. Our thanks goes out to the Barnes County 4-H Youth!

We will soon be entering the 2017-2018 influenza season. To prepare, the Sheyenne Care Center recommends that all of our residents receive the influenza vaccine. We also offer vaccinations for our staff members, as it is mandatory that all Sheyenne Care Center employees receive influenza vaccines each year to help keep infections among staff and residents to a minimum. When entering our facility, we encourage all guest to use the hand sanitizer that is provided before visiting your loved ones. We also have masks available at all public entrances and we highly recommend any visitor with a cough or infection to make use of them as well. Residents are also encouraged to get the recommended pneumonia vaccines each year; these vaccines have already been offered and administered to all the residents that qualify. This year, the Sheyenne Care Center requested a visit by the Infection Control Assessment Coordinator of the State of North Dakota. In April we received that visit, at which time, we received education, feedback and recommendations, on how to improve infection control and better provide for the needs of our residents. We found this visit very beneficial to staff members and residents alike. Quality Assurance (QA) is done regularly with employees; which emphasizes the importance of using standard precautions with all resident cares. Standard precautions include washing your hands or using hand sanitizer between all cares, along with the use of gloves when needed. An isolation cart and sign is placed by a resident’s room as needed if an infection that needs extra precautions is present. Quality Assurance is done in all departments to ensure that all the right practices are being performed in order to prevent the spread of infections. At the Sheyenne Care Center, we are currently in the process of remodeling and expanding. Together with the contractors, we are working to ensure that all safe practices are being performed and monitored, as to not pose a risk of infection to anyone involved. A survey team, QA, and weekly meetings are being done to monitor for these risks and to plan accordingly. An infection report is available monthly for our employees, which includes information on the types and number of infections that our residents and employees had during the prior month. Educational information is also included. Daily monitoring is being performed and monthly QA meetings (more if needed) are done with our full management team and medical director to discuss ways to prevent further infections and to discuss any areas of concern staff may have.

Flower Show
In late July some of the members from the Sheyenne Valley Garden Club and
other local gardeners graciously shared their best of the best from their gardens with
the residents of SCC. This has been happening for years. After the community flower
show they bring their flowers, plants and arrangements to the care center for an
afternoon show. It is no doubt the high-lite of the summer for residents and staff alike
and we are so very thankful that they are willing to share with us.
SCC has also implemented an antibiotic stewardship program. This program in-cludes antibiotic use protocols and a system to monitor antibiotic use. The reason for this program is to decrease the number of unnecessary antibiotic use and to better improve the care of our residents. In return this will aid in the posed risk of drug re-sistant bacteria that have caused areas of concern worldwide. Infection prevention and control is important to us at SCC to help us take the best possible care of your loved ones. We will continue to provide education and do our best to keep infections to a minimum.

Back to School Pizza Party
The week before school started the kids from Valley City Children’s Center and
the residents they had gotten to know over the summer shared in a fun filled pizza
outing. Earlier in the summer, the kids came and spent an afternoon doing chalk at
and blowing bubbles for the residents, topped off by sharing delicious ice cream
treats. These summer events (plus an occasional water gun fun day) have become a
tradition we all look forward to. We all met at Pizza Corner for an “All You Can Eat”
pizza buffet with soda, of course, and ice cream for dessert. Before each group
heading in their separate directions we shared in a short sing-a-long to some of the
kids’ favorites. We are looking forward to spending more time with our young friends
very soon.
