A Leap of Faith Rev. Dr. Bob Gross OCC

The Church Council, at their May 2018 meeting, proposed that the Church give $5,000.00 as seed money for a Community Picnic that would be a fundraiser for SALS Recovery. There was some honest discussion about the amount and expected outcomes. There was some real fear that we might spend the money and not have anything left to give to SALS. Their conversation reminded me of a story, shared by the Rev. Traci Blackmon, Executive for Justice and Local Church Ministries for the United Church of Christ. Rev. Blackmon told about a tradition in her congregation where children get up on Easter to tell what the resurrection means to them. She had encouraged a five-year-old to speak and he said he was too afraid. To her surprise, he got up and spoke on Easter morning. When she asked how he got over his fear, he replied, “I didn’t. I did it afraid.”

It was no different with the Council. They voted to take a leap of faith, to “do it afraid” and approved the expense.

The picnic was this past Saturday. To say it was a “success” would be an understatement. I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves. As for that leap of faith, we served 350 lunches and raised more than $10,000.00!!!

Because of the Council’s faithful, visionary action, and the work of an entire village of people, our initial investment doubled. This means that Recovery Counselors will be able to go into the ER at Waukesha

Memorial Hospital and offer hope for recovery to those suffering from opioid addiction. This is God’s work. This is the church in mission! Friends, I cannot express enough thanks to everyone who contributed to this effort.

I recognize this is not an isolated event. Within a

week of this event, teachers were trained for the new Sunday school year, we provided hospitality at Delafield Presbyterian Church for Family Promise, served meals at the Hope Center, and tied quilts to be donated.

I offer thanks in my prayers for each of you.

September 1 marks the beginning of my fourth year as your Pastor. The following words are as true today as they ever have been: Evangelical and Reformed UCC is a vibrant and

growing congregation and I am so blessed to be a part of this congregation as together we move into God’s preferred future.

September Notes from Sunday school Mary Ann Proffitt, Christian Ed Director

Deep Sea Discovery: Diving into the Bible

“That’s So Cool

Sunday School” is now

finished. Thank you to the volunteers who helped upstairs during the summer! We had a great time learning about perseverance, teamwork, acceptance, and hope through the Bible stories about Paul and Silas, the disciples, the Good Samaritan, and Abraham. “Deep Sea Discovery: Diving into the Bible”

Sunday School program will begin on Sunday,

September 9th with our Bible Blastoff! The kids will learn more about the parts of the Bible, like the concordance, some of the books of the Bible, and how to look up verses in the Bible through some fun games

and activities! Then the following week we will begin our first rotation learning about David through games, cooking and other fun activities! The preschool/kindergarteners will begin learning about how God created the world through, storytelling, games and crafts! Come join in the fun and invite your friends!

Community Outreach/Vitality Dan & Kristine DeKarske, Mary Gross, Brian Van Buren, Sue Kuhtz

Thank you!

We wish to thank the following people for volunteering for "Family Promise" the week of August 26th: Donna Leuzinger, Ron Knutson, Sue Buyatt, Linda Hink, Deb Hink, Sue Kuhtz, Karen Olson, Laura Kuhtz, Brian & Dawn Van Buren, Dan & Kris DeKarske.

It’s been said many times before, but you really are making a difference in your community by giving of your time & reaching out to these families in need. Thank You!

Thank you!

Vacation Bible School was a great success with a lot of faith, fun and friends! We had 47 students register and averaged about 43 students a night! We learned how Jesus is with us when we worry, when we struggle, when we’re lonely, when we do wrong and when we are powerless. Jesus rescues!!! There were a lot of fun water games, cool art projects, delicious snacks and interactive stories to help us learn each night. We also made a “garden” to raise money for seeds for those struggling in Haiti! We raised $190!!! A huge thank you to all those who contributed to VBS this year in some way, whether it was by donating magazines, swimming pools, volunteering, donating snack items, or prayers! It was greatly appreciated! I would also like to thank all the parents, grandparents and guardians that brought their children to VBS every night! Your kids are fabulous! Thank you for sharing them with us and we hope you will join us again next year!!!

Youth Group News Mary Ann Proffitt

Great Lakes Regional Youth Event

Five youth & 3 adults attended this inspiring event at Elmhurst college where the theme was “A Just World for All: Your Voice Matters”! The weekend was full of great fellowship, inspiring worship services, educational workshops, motivating speakers & storytellers &

wonderful food! Here are some of our youth’s thoughts on that weekend experience:

“During the Great Lake Regional Youth Event I liked having group sessions with people inside and outside of our region. It was nice to discuss some of the common issues, and good things, that are happening throughout our sister churches. I really enjoyed everything overall, to experience the energy and the love for God was the best thing, because it made me feel even better about being a part of a UCC Church!” ~ Mariann Maile

“During the Great Lakes Regional Youth Event, I loved the uplifting and innovative music used during the worship. Whenever I would step into the chapel I would immediately feel welcome and energized. The worship we did at the event was uplifting and different from what I have experienced before. Overall I enjoyed the 2018 Regional Youth Event.” ~ Caitlin Proffitt

“I found the Great Lakes Regional Youth Event to be a very uplifting and inspiring experience where I learned more on how our faith is evolving and growing. I enjoyed meeting other youth with the same passion for Christ and motivation to make our world a better place. One of my favorite parts of the event was the contemporary Christian music that was performed during the worship with meaningful messages to bring hope, to inspire, and to share the love of God.” ~Gabrielle Proffitt

"At the Great Lakes Regional Youth Event, I liked the songs in worship, the friends I met and my dorm room."

~ Daniel Gross

"During my time at the regional youth event I enjoyed listening to the stories Valerie Tutson would tell and putting stories in a different light that is still relatable even if it is not compared to the technology or evolution of today. She would explore the different realities and personalities of the characters, engaging us in emotions and expression. Inspiring us to create a better world though love." ~Sarah Gross

The youth will be sharing more of their exciting experiences with you during 3 youth led worship services this year with the first scheduled for October 7th. Hope you’ll come and support them on their faith journey!

Welcoming Ministry

Ron Knutson

As of this writing, your Welcoming Ministry team has begun our study of the “Doctrine of Discovery” using materials provided by the Wisconsin Conference of the UCC. During the next several months we’ll be reading about and discussing the

historical significance of the Doctrine and the devastation that it has rendered across generations of American Indians and Indigenous peoples around the globe. We will also be looking at how the Doctrine is affecting those Native Americans today.

In Exodus 17:1-7 we read Moses led the people out of the wilderness of Sinai. When they found that there was no water, the people quarreled with Moses. Their struggle for physical survival became a struggle for spiritual survival, prompting the people to ask, “Is the LORD among us or not?”

We know that questioning and arguing with God is not out of the ordinary in the Bible. Could this be a metaphor for us? We are a nation which is filled with spiritual nomads searching for a meaningful oasis but wherever we go we are disappointed. Where can we find the water that will save us? “Is the LORD among us or not?”

Confirmation Class

Sunday, September 16th at 10:30 am upstairs in the Sunday school gathering space. An informational meeting for confirmation students in 7th & 8th grade. All students in & entering confirmation should attend this meeting along with at least one parent. Requirements & guidelines will be reviewed along with distribution of workbooks ($10 to purchase) & questions will be answered. Please let Mary Ann Proffitt know if you have any questions about this meeting. Look forward to seeing you there!

We’ve seen recently how just by changing a name or mascot, we think that the issue is resolved. But this is just the beginning. We need to find out what they need from us. What can we do to bring them closer to resolving the issue? I’m certain that this is just the tip of the iceberg of the issue. There also is no easy answer for the American Indians who are called to faith by a church that has justified their demise and partnered with the early settlers to destroy their language and culture and placed their survivors on reservations.

As we continue with this study we need to remember that we are all to love our neighbors as ourselves. Jesus would have it no other way.

Please join us in this study and reflection. Feel free to contact Ron Knutson by phone at 262-424-0496 or via email at [email protected]. Our first session meeting will take place on September 12th at 6:30 pm. I look forward to hearing from you.

Youth Group Meeting

Sunday, September 9th after church at 10:30am. Meetings are typically the 2nd Sunday of every month to discuss mission work, events & activities & are for students 7th grade through high school. Everyone’s welcome!

Women’s Fellowship Sue Manzke, President

Well, we certainly have been enjoying a wonderful summer, however all good things must come to an end and I feel and see fall knocking on the door!! Hope it’s as nice as our summer has been. Community Picnic

In less than a week we will be having a wonderful Community Picnic at our church to raise funds for the fight against Opioids! It’s been a tremendous undertaking for a number of people. We need to give a huge shout out to Toni & Ron Knutson for their amazing effort in putting it together . . . along with the help of many others. Hopefully the weather will cooperate and we’ll have a great turnout! Ham Supper

Our usual fall events are in the making, such as the Ham Supper! Don’t miss it!! This year we will have 10 vendors! There will be a couple new ones also, so you can get your

Christmas Shopping started early!! (Yikes, yes I said

Christmas already!) Mark your calendars for October 13th and be sure to come! Our menu will pretty much remain the same as always . . . Ham, AuGratin potatoes, corn, squash, rolls and butter, plus a great variety of homemade desserts. We’ll also sell the ham bones and Bean Soup mix. Invite your friends . . . bringing someone could be a great gesture to a neighbor, good friend or relative. Be sure to pass the word that we are open to ALL! We can also provide you with a flyer for your place of employment or anywhere else you think it would be seen. If you’d like a packet of tickets to sell at work or elsewhere please let me know and I can hook you up. This is the Women’s Fellowships largest fundraiser. We donate the proceeds to several groups. Tickets will be $12 for adults, $5 for kids 6-11 and free to 5 and under.

Hat/Mitten/Scarf Tree Speaking of time flying . . . have you started your items for the Hat/Mitten/Scarf tree? It’s a perfect time of the year to sit under a shady tree or hide away in the A/C and knit away!! Whatever you choose, we really do appreciate it. The tree will go up in November. Better to be ready than play catch-up! Thanks for all you do for the Hope Center. Kringle Sale

The annual Kringle sale will be happening this year again also. Still working on dates and details. Watch your bulletins & next Trumpet for more info. If you’d like to

have a sheet to sell Kringles at work or to your family or

neighbor’s, please let me know and I can get you one. We have a couple folks who do this & it’s a tremendous help!! Thank you Shirley Maile & Donna Leuzinger!! Angels Express

We’d like to remind you that we have a program called Angels Express. It was developed for anyone who might be in need of a meal or two. It could be someone who is ill, or is living with someone who is ill, or maybe someone who has a significant other in the hospitaI or someone who just needs a lift. If you or you know of someone who could use a little help, please let Pat Kruse know. She’ll contact the person and arrange for someone to prepare something for them. Pie Sale

We’re once again looking into doing a Pie Sale at the Rotary Pancake Breakfast. Toni Perez will be in charge of this possible project. If you have any interest in helping or have any question, please contact her. We’d like to know if there is enough interest in the project so don’t be afraid to let either Toni or myself know your thoughts.

Christmas Clearing Council

You’ll also see the big red barrels appear when we’re closer to Christmas because we’ll be helping out with Christmas Clearing Council. Remember you can buy

gifts (unwrapped), gift cards or give a check. Any gift cards/checks can go to Toni Knutson rather than dropping in the barrels. If you’re unable to shop but would like a toy purchased, let Toni know & we’ll take care of it.

Annual Women’s Retreat

Mark your calendars for our Annual Women’s Retreat on November 17th. Cost will be $20 each & it’ll be money well spent!! The topic is “A Father’s Love-Faith, Family and Friendships” with guest speaker Jennifer Johnson. More details will be coming. You are urged to invite a friend, relative or neighbor. ALL ARE WELCOME!

Office Access:

In an effort to make our church more secure, we have changed the office access code. We’ll then continue to change it on an annual basis the month after council elections each year. Council has reviewed a list of those who need access to the

office and the new code has been given out to them accordingly. If you feel that you have a need to access the office, please reach out to one of the trustees, we’ll review your request and get back to you as soon as possible. Trustees include: Jenn Wray, Toni Knutson, Joe Perez, George Golding & Ray LaBarge.

Housekeeping news . . .

AND NOW A HOUSEKEEPING HEADS UP . . .Each day our church is becoming more involved with the community & several groups are now using our kitchen . . . some from within & some from the community who are paying for the use of our commercial

kitchen. Some folks are becoming a little lax in how they put things away & how they clean up . . . counters, sinks, refrigerator, freezer & stove & oven. Please be a little more aware & respectful of others by doing your part & please leave the kitchen better than you found it! Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you very much!! Next Meeting

Our next meeting is October 2nd at 6:30pm. Won’t you please join us. There is no initiation or hazing . . . just a group of ladies that get together every other month to do what ladies do in the church. God has blessed us in so many ways that we try to help those who are less fortunate. Come see how much fun we have doing God’s work!! And as always...there will be a great dessert!! Octobers will be provided by Mary Ann Proffitt!

Updated Directories:

Using our new database, we ‘re now able to include pictures, but we’re missing quite a few, plus we may also have outdated or missing contact information for several people. If so, please send us your correct information & current picture to the church office email at: [email protected]. Thank you!!

We’re on YouTube!

If you can’t make it to worship, you can still watch and listen to the sermon online. Feel free to share with your friends and neighbors. Hit control & click the link to check out many of our past messages on YouTube.

Family Fun Time Events Greg and Mary Ann Proffitt Book Club

Tuesday, September 4th at 6:30 pm

Have you thought about joining Book Club? Come join us at church and see what it’s all about! Bring a friend! Even if you don’t

finish the book, you’re welcome to join us☺ We’ll be discussing "Calling Me Home" by Julie Kibler, which is a soaring debut interweaving the story of a heartbreaking, forbidden love in 1930’s Kentucky with an unlikely modern-day friendship. Eighty-nine-year-old Isabelle McAllister has a favor to ask her hairdresser Dorrie Curtis. It's a big one. Isabelle wants her, a black single mom in her thirties, to drop everything to drive her from her home in Arlington, Texas, to a funeral in Cincinnati. With no clear explanation why. Tomorrow. Dorrie, fleeing problems of her own & curious whether she can unlock the secrets of Isabelle's guarded past, scarcely hesitates before agreeing, not knowing it will be a journey that changes both their lives. Over the years, Dorrie and

Isabelle have developed more than just a business relationship. They are friends. But Dorrie, fretting over the new man in her life and her teenage son's irresponsible choices, still wonders why Isabelle chose her. Isabelle confesses that, as a willful teen in 1930s Kentucky, she fell deeply

in love with Robert Prewitt, a would-be doctor and the black son of her family's house-keeper - in a town where blacks weren't allowed after dark. The tale of their forbidden relationship and its tragic consequences makes it clear Dorrie and Isabelle are headed for a gathering of the utmost importance and that the history of Isabelle's first and greatest love just might help Dorrie find her own way.” Come enjoy an evening of discussion, dessert and a lot of fun! Everyone is welcome and please invite a friend!

Crafter's Corner

Saturday, September 29th 9:00 am - 8:30 pm at church. Come craft the afternoon away! Bring your favorite crafts & join in an afternoon of fellowship and fun! The theme for lunch will be “Nothing but Noodles”. Invite a friend or two & come for lunch or stay the whole day! Everyone is welcome.

Reclaiming Jesus - A Confession of Faith

in a Time of Crisis Franz Rigert, Conference Minister

Dear friends and colleagues,

I greet you in the grace and peace of Jesus the Christ,

and in the courage and conviction of the One who gave

His life to the Gospel of love.

Having just returned from a Justice

Colloquy in Berlin, with our communion

partners in the German Evangelical

Protestant Church, I am inspired to share

a powerful Confession of Faith which

grounded our conversations and guided

our discerning as to the role of the

Church in these unsettling times.

Throughout the week, we studied the life

and witness of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther

King Jr., focusing on the biblical and

theological foundations he used during the civil rights

movement. In particular we centered our conversations

on a quote often attributed to King -- "The arc of the

moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice." In

fact, King cleverly paraphrased this line, which was

taken from a portion of a sermon delivered in 1853 by

the abolitionist minister Theodore Parker.

On our midweek field trip day, we retraced King's visit

to Germany in September of 1964, where he planned

to deliver a speech in West Berlin and receive an

Honorary Doctorate Degree. Surprisingly (and with his

passport confiscated) King managed to get into East

Berlin with the nod of an official, where he preached

with very little notice in two spontaneously packed

sanctuaries. He delivered the same sermon in East and

West Berlin, with markedly different responses,

particularly around his theme of unity: "Where people

break down the dividing wall of hostility which

separates them from their brothers (sisters), Christ achieves his ministry of reconciliation."

For West Berliners this resonated as a metaphor. For

East Berliners it was a literal reality. Thus, King's visit

had a lasting effect, calling for the oneness of all God's

people - for those suffering apartheid in South Africa,

for those seeking civil rights in the United States, and

for those divided by walls in Germany.

Throughout the week, we discovered striking

similarities between the Evangelical Protestant Church

in Germany and the Progressive Protestant Church in

the United States. Both continue to face daunting

declines and significant economic challenges, yet both

are responding boldly to the resurgence of white

nationalism and the rising tide of xenophobia in

Germany and the US. Both advocate for the plight of

migrants - on the Mediterranean Sea in

Europe and along the southern border

in the states. Both Churches are

working tirelessly to dismantle age-old

paternalistic power systems and to

address the epidemic of sexual abuse,

perpetrated disproportionately within

the very Institution of the Church.

And so, we longed for a Confessional

Statement, through which to

acknowledge our complicity and upon

which to ground our convictions.

The Reclaiming Jesus initiative is an

important response to our current

political and social context and is paramount in shaping

our justice work. As the document says, "What we

confess as our faith leads to what we confront."

I commend to you the Reclaiming Jesus Summary (a

one page overview) as well as the Full Reclaiming

Jesus Confession of Faith. These were issued

following a 2018 Ash Wednesday retreat attended by

several renowned Christian leaders and theologians,

including the Rev. Dr. Walter Brueggemann, Fr. Richard

Rohr, Bishop Will Willimon, the Most Rev. Michael B.

Curry and the Rev. Jim Wallis (just to name a few).

In the words of Hebrews, "Let us hold fast to the

confession of our hope without wavering, for the One

who has promised is faithful." (10:23)

The AM Choir Rueck Ruecktenwald

The choir will next sing

“Morning Has Broken” on

September 9th. Come join

the group to share this

hymn as written by Eleanor

Farjeon in 1931. The final

prelude piece will be this

hymn so everyone can hear it before we sing.

A big “thanks” to all of you dedicated AM Choir singers! Your singing from the heart is meaningful and adds to God’s message.
