2 2/18/96 L.A. STORY

Editorial By Al BairdEditorial

“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he hasanointed me to preach good news to the poor.He has sent me to proclaim freedom to theprisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, torelease the oppressed, to proclaim the year ofthe Lord’s favor.” Luke 4:18-19

uperbowl XXX is history now. Yes, I am happythat Dallas won; I can’t shake my Texas heritage. On Superbowl Sunday I stood before

our Church service with a challenge. I knew that injust a few hours we would all be yelling our headsoff for our favorite team. Yet the audience wasshowing little more enthusiasm to be in anassembly with God and his angels than they wouldshow at a funeral. Christianity is not meant to bepassive. Take the Superbowl test. Are you as firedup in your daily Christian walk as the footballcrowd is at the game? Of course, we can hypeourselves and our assemblies without the energycoming from the heart, but then it is just hype, notthe Spirit of God. As we grow in size and age as amovement, let us never become so “sophisticated”that we lose our childlike excitement as we seeGod working.

And seeing God’s power is what this L.A.Story is all about. Last year was the best yet inthe short 16-year history of God’s modern-daymovement. Overall our membership grew bymore than 15,000 disciples, or 26%. The pre-vious year, 1994, had been our best ever witha 24% growth rate, but 1995 even surpassedthat. For the first time, Sunday attendancebroke the 100,000 barrier early in the yearand continues to grow at the same rate as ourmembership. This is a good indicator thatthis phenomenal growth rate will continue.

A big part of this geometric growth is thesuccess of our largest Churches. Around theworld, 19 Churches have a membership in excessof 1,000 disciples, 10 of these are outside the U. S.Incredibly, 30 Churches have a Sunday attendance

of more than 1,000; 14 of these are outside theUnited States. Another Church joins this 1,000-member club every couple of months. Keepingmomentum in large churches is very difficult. Infact, for several years our large Churches laggedbehind in their growth, and some even stagnated. But Kip McKean turned the L.A. Church into amodel for growing big churches. Since 1994, L.A.has been the largest and fastest growing Churchin the Kingdom. Now it is approaching a Sundayattendance of 10,000. With L.A. leading theway, the 1,000 member Churches have about thesame growth rate average as the Kingdom overall.

Love and “The Comfort Zone”Why has the Kingdom grown so rapidly

since 1979? Because of God and because a fewpeople seeking God responded to his challenge tolive as disciples and to make disciples. My greatestconcern is that we not grow comfortable and stopdoing our part. (God will always do his part.) Thefirst sign of disciples entering the comfort zone iswhen they lose their love for the lost. I appreciatethat Kip continually emphasizes for himself, forleaders and for all disciples to “seek and save thelost.” It is easy for leaders to slip into the com-fortable rut of just studying with people thatothers bring to church or to Bible Talk. Leadersare first to be disciples, and all disciples arecalled to be personally fruitful. It is hypocriti-cal for a leader to call others to do what he orshe is not willing to do. Kip nearly always has avisitor at Church with him. I doubt that therehas even been a year in his life as a disciplethat he has not met and brought someone toJesus. He has just baptized Bruce, whom hemet through his son Eric’s tennis. Kip holds hisdiscipleship group accountable weekly forbringing personal visitors to Church. Anyonewho has been at a leadership conference whenKip has spoken expects and appreciates hischallenge, “Everyone who has been personally

fruitful in the past year raise your hand.” I amgrateful for such high expectations, because I knowthat I need it and everyone in the Church needs it.

Congratulations to Sean McKean, Kip andElena’s 13-year old son. His parents baptized him inthe Pacific Ocean on January 21st. Many of uscrowded into the McKean’s living room to sharewith Sean and hear him share about his faith and hisdecision for Jesus. Gloria and I have known Seansince he was born. He has such a tender heart. Histears and our tears came as he shared and acknowl-edged those who had affected him. It was a stormyday, but as we headed to the beach, the rain stoppedand God smiled on the occasion as the sun brokethrough the heavy clouds. God certainly has somegreat things in store for Sean! And Olivia McKeanjust baptized her best friend from junior high.

“Cry Freedom” is the perfect theme for thisissue. Growth such as we experienced in 1995 isabout releasing thousands upon thousands of peo-ple from their prison of sin. Let every one of usdetermine that in 1996 freedom will be proclaimedas never before. For this to happen, we must do ourpart. Each of us, with hearts overflowing with grat-itude for our own salvation, must open ourmouths wide and CRY FREEDOM. ■

n 1979, when God’s modern-day movement began in Boston, Massachusetts, the world situation was politically tense and socially restricted. Yet, the BostonChurch, led by Kip and Elena McKean, seriously accepted Jesus’ command to

make disciples of all nations.Take a look at the incredible obstacles to the spread of the gospel around the

world in 1979. Note that the heroic mission teams went towards doors that wereshut. One by one, the doors opened only after the disciples stepped out in faith.
